BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS With the hot and humid weather of Summer 2012 behind us, the trails at the Brighton Recreation Area have seen a lot more riders. We're all getting in the saddle as much as we can and making up for lost time. Autumn also marks the beginning of the end of the riding season (except for those hardy souls who like plowing through the snow) so we want to take full advantage of these pleasant days and evenings. Aside from pleasure riding with one or two companions, BTRA members have also been ready for organized activities. We still have a few open rides left on the schedule and the big event of the fall season is our Poker Ride and cookout on October 20th. In years past Mother Nature has been kind to us, despite the fact that late October can bring some unpleasant weather. We all cross out fingers a few days before this event. We also make sure that our trails remain in tiptop shape. Our Work Bee program goes on throughout the season, but the bushes and briars that we trim one month begin creeping back onto the trails before we know it. Plus, the limbs and brushes never stop falling and getting them cleared often calls for chainsaw work. Not only do we keep our trails clear and open for BTRA members and visitors to Brighton, we lay out the “red carpet” for other riding groups that hold events at the Rec Area. This fall's events include Competitive Mounted Orienteering on October 22nd & 23rd and the Grand Equestrian RideA-Thon on October 29th. More
information on these events can be found on the BTRA website: brightontrailriders.com We want to introduce a new member on our Board of Directors. Rose Clark recently was named to the Board and we're very excited to have her join our ranks. Rose has been active in BTRA for years and beyond that, she is well known across Michigan and in other states for her competitive trail riding activities. She has participated in events around the country, has earned numerous awards, and has set records astride her beloved Arab gelding, Matuks Legend+/. Among his accomplishments, Legend held the all-time high mileage record in Michigan. Unfortunately, Legend is deceased but in his honor, The Great Lakes Distance Riding Association (GLDRA) created an annual award, the “Legend Cup”. This coveted award goes to the horse completing the most miles in any given year in sanctioned GLDRA competitions. With our new Board lineup and an active fall schedule, the rest of the riding season is looking pretty good for BTRA! Mark Delaney BTRA Secretary
Our September 17th meeting will be held at Concord Ridge Stables in St. Joseph, Mi. There will be a driving demonstration and discussions on harness fitting and training. Our October 15th meeting will be held at Dr. Fedore's (formally with Bergman Veterinary clinic) new large animal facility at 57851 Decatur Rd in Cassoplis. Dr. Fedore has an associate Dr.Britany Nehring- Lappin. Plus viewing his new facility Dr. Fedore states has will talk on an important equine topic. Dr. Fedore has talked to Equine Ladies before on different subjects and he has always been open in answering any questions that we might present him. Our November 19th meeting is our Christmas shopping trip for our fun famous Christmas party in December. Again we will be going to Rick's Tack in Hartford and then the group goes to the Panel Room almost across the street from Rick's Tack for a short meeting while we are waiting for our food. If you would like at attend a meeting please contact one the following Ladies for more information: Sally Forraht at 269473-1730 or Debby Brown at 269-655-7289.
EQUINE LADIES We don't have a monthly meeting in August as we have children and now grandchildren that show at the Berrien County Youth Fair and it falls usually the same week as our meeting. This has been the custom for probably 25 plus years. Our group contribute funds for equestrian classes at Berrien, Van Buren and Cass County fairs as we have members in all 3 counties.
GLASS-ED GLASS-ED has one show remaining in our 2012 show season. On October 6th Mystic Marsh in Delton, Mi will hold their second scheduled show of the season. Our Year End Awards banquet will be November 3rd at the Kellogg Biological Conference Center on Gull Lake in Richland, MI. Our speaker this year will be Jane Kelly, a popular judge at the GLASS-ED shows. It is sure to be an interesting and informative

talk. The Year End Awards banquet is open to all GLASS-ED members and their guests for a nominal fee. The Awards Banquet features awards for every category of horse and rider from the new-toshowing to the experienced competitor. Our categories start with Intro to Dressage awards for the 1st year rider – junior and senior. These are geared towards riders in their first year of showing dressage. There are three tests in Intro to Dressage and only the third one requires cantering. So if you are not ready to canter and you want to try showing, this is the category for you to try next year. Some of the fun year end awards include the musical freestyles – including the quadrille and pas de deux freestyles. Freestyles are choreographed rides that are set to the music of the rider's choosing. These are always fun classes to watch. The quadrille and pas de deux freestyles are musical rides using up to four riders as a team. Anyone who has ever ridden in a pas de deux or quadrille can tell you that this is a lot of fun! In December we will be sending Bernadette Radke, our GMO liaison, to the USDF National Convention in New Orleans, LA. Look for more information in the November newsletter on where you can go to find her daily updates from the convention. The Great Lakes Area Show Series - Educational Dressage organization is a USDF Region 2 GMO created to promote the art and sport of Dressage to young riders, new riders, inexperienced horses, and people just out to have fun with their horse. We concentrate on learning and making our shows inexpensive, fun and accessible to all. We pride ourselves on our warm and welcoming atmosphere. The ride managers trusted the Flaming Hoofprints with the responsibility of taking a new rider out with us on the trails. She even chose to ride with us the next day, so it couldn't have been too bad. Having never ridden there before, we were pleasantly surprised with the trails, the location, and the covered picnic shelter. It was great to be able to take a dip in the lake at the end of a hot day of riding. We did get some strange looks when we washed our hair in the lake but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do! I would recommend Sleepy Hollow to anyone looking for a new place to ride. I can't wait to experience Waterloo for the first time in October. Be sure to visit our website for information on our association and events: www.micmo.org Happy Trails!
MICHIGAN COMPETITIVE MOUNTED ORIENTEERING As the season for horse competitions winds down, I find myself wondering: Did I do all I wanted to do this summer? My team made it to all but two Competitive Mounted Orienteering rides, we learned how to camp with our horses and I rode almost every day that I could. I hope that many of you can look back on the summer and realize that it was a good year. Luckily, the best weather for riding is still ahead of us. Michigan is a glorious place to enjoy the colors of fall, especially from the back of a horse. The very last CMO for 2012 will be the “A Hunting We Will Go” CMO at Waterloo Recreation Area on October 6th and 7th. Last year a broken leg, truck troubles, and cold rainy weather kept us from the last two rides of the season. This year we hope to make it to the final ride of the year and share one last potluck with fellow competitors. Rumor has it they are giving out awards for the best decorated campsite, so I hope my husband doesn't plan on using his hunting blind that weekend... Please join us! The ride at Sleepy Hollow State Park in August was a huge success. A great big thank you goes to all the powers that be at Sleepy Hollow for letting us camp in their day-use area. Thank you to the ride managers Barb Drake and Linda Kraai for putting on a wonderful ride and for their generous donation to the horse trails at Sleepy Hollow. The evening glow stick ride was quite a sight to see. The Boarder Jumpers went all out with glow sticks on every horse ankle and human appendage, it was something I will never forget.

PROUD LAKE TRAIL RIDERS Howdy from the Proud Lake Trail Riders Association! We are so pleased to report that our third campout of the year was a ton of fun. Thanks to those that came out and trimmed trails and went riding and stayed to camp. You do not need to be a member to camp with us or to participate in any of our events. Coming in October is our a n n u a l S P O O K TA C U L A R Halloween event! Join us in costume (your horse, too!) for tons of fun, games and trick-ortreat trail riding. Cash prize for the best rider/horse costume. There will be a separate contest for everyone under the age of 18. This is an event for the entire family. Join us on Saturday, October 27th at the Proud Lake Staging Area. Registration starts at 10 AM. This event is chaired (29)
by Kim Veenstra of Mobile Confidence Course and Cindy Godair of Grand River Feeds. There is no doubt that it will be a huge success! Please be sure to save the date for our annual banquet. It will be on Friday, February 22, 2013 at Bakers in Milford. Watch for details as this is a dinner you will not want to miss. Please visit us at our website (currently being updated) at www.proudlaketrailriders.org for membership information and “like us” on Facebook. Happy Trails!
SLEEPY HOLLOW TRL RIDERS Don't forget October 12-14 is the Ichabod Crane weekend! Open equestrian camping both Fri. and Sat. nights. All the trails are open all weekend. On Sat. and Sun. mornings camp potluck breakfast for all. Bring a breakfast item. Gale and his crew will be cooking. Saturday a.m. volunteers will gather to ready the children's games (pumpkin bowling, big bubbles, loot digging, creepy box, horse painting) at the beach parking lot. The games and horse drawn wagon rides will be there from noon to 2:30pm for the public. We need volunteers for team headers, ticket takers, games a n d p o o p p i c ke r- u p p e r s . Costumes are welcomed. Listen to our storyteller explain the Legend's facts. Only Ichabod and The Headless Horseman will be riding their horses in that area as we expect several hundred folks to attend. Several SHTRA members will be picket-line “horse sitting” back at the staging area for the volunteers while they are at the beach. A potluck dinner for all is planned at about 3:30pm. Then join us trail riding and at the campfire around the horseshoe ring to unwind. WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM
Horse Association & Club News SHTRA, Continued Sunday there will be some Spooky things out to decorate one trail. So come camp and ride and/or volunteer to help. Contact Diane (517) 669-3729, karsten@msu.edu or Marsha (989) 661-2541, marken68@ aol.com or Gary (989) 834-1813, shargary@peoplepc.com. Don't forget, we're on Facebook! The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow CMO was held Aug. 24-26. The nationally sanctioned CMO hosted by Barb Drake and Linda Kraai drew the largest numbers of participants for any event this year. Over fifty CMOers rode the courses on Saturday. Sleezy Barb Horsewear sponsored the event and everyone received a nice prize at the awards potluck. SHTRA furnished hot dogs for the dinner and were glad so many folks got to ride the south lake loop for their first time. Many enjoyed the beach and swimming in Lake Ovid after riding. We graciously thank Barb and Linda for their hours of planning and hosting this multi day event. All of this fundraiser's profits were donated to SHTRA! They said “Plan next year's CMO the weekend before Labor Day.” See our web www.shtra.org for pictures and more info. Labor Day Weekend, SHTRA had open equestrian camping for everyone. Pat Brown and Linda Kraai were our hosts. Our rides had everyone out on the trails and the “in camp” scavenger hunt was new and fun! The weekend's 50/50 raffle was won by “Lucky Nic.” On Sunday and Monday many of us were driving our horses and doing cones course. The weekend's highlight was Sunday afternoon making homemade ice cream! Thanks to those who brought their freezers, ingredients and lots of ice. Welcome to new members Judy, Scott, Ryan and Alice, Mark, Lynn and Rosemary! We all had a blast at the Great Sleepy Hollow Treasure Hunt,
Riding Like a Pirate! It was enjoyed by arrr-- all. The piratethemed events were great and rider costumes were fabulous, fun and so creative. Prizes were donated by Sleezy Barb Horsewear. Thank You! Thanks also go to The Mad Dog Gale and Wench Linda for putting on this top notch event. The 50/50 raffle was won by Bud and Maureen who decided to become new members of SHTRA! Welcome! Next SHTRA Board meeting will be October 10th, 6:30pm at Pat Browns. The bleachers that SHTRA has donated to the Park have been in use for Archery and Hunter Safety groups. A 2012 Michigan Horse Council grant helped us with the funds for that project. Thanks! Ride safe - wear orange! Marsha Putnam

YANKEE SPRINGS TRL RIDERS BOARD MEETING MINUTES September 12, 2012 Committee Reports: Kids Day Event Report: We had 18 riders and 50 people for lunch, it was a fun day for everyone. Every kid got a prize for riding the scavenger hunt and for visiting the learning stations. Most of the prizes were donations from club members and Country Fresh donated the ice cream so our expenses were minimal. Thanks to everyone who came out that day and supported this event! A suggestion was made when flyers are created for events to list the upcoming events at the bottom of each flyer, great suggestion, thank you Carolyn. Old Business: Work Bee coming up on Sunday September 23, 2012, we need lots of volunteers. Come help us get the 9-mile trail cleaned up. Plans are to install the 2 mile markers on the 9 mile trail and trim back the overgrown Autumn Olive in the clear cut areas then spray to kill it off. A potluck lunch at 1:00, held at the YS Pavilion. Burgers/Buns will be provided. Skip made the motion we provide 20 lbs of burger/40 buns, Roger 2nd voted on and passed. YSTRA Club Campout is September 29th and 30th let's get together and have some fun.
WEST MI APPALOOSA REG It's hard to believe that by the time you read this, the WMAR show season will be over. It seems this summer just flew by. I'm glad we finally received some much needed rain to help with the hay, crops and pastures. It was an epic summer, weather wise, wasn't it? Some of you folks will already be planning for your trip to the World Championship Appaloosa show, while others will be looking at doing some fall trail riding or maybe hitting a few open or specialty shows. The members who put together your year-end awards are already looking for new ideas. If you have something in particular that you've seen that you think might work, just let one of the board members know so they can pass it on. Our regular board meetings will be starting up again, soon. Please remember that all members are welcome to attend. We would love to have more members get involved in the day to day running of the club as well as with some of our

An alternate date of February 9th if the weather is bad on February 2nd. Suggestions for speakers were made, is there anyone you would like to hear talk? Let us know. GREEN LAKE TRAIL RIDE On April 21, 2012, the Waterloo Horsemen Association hosted the 2nd annual Green Lake Trail Ride at Waterloo State Park. In order to participate in the annual ride, individuals must be a member of the Waterloo Horsemen Association in addition to a nominal fee to cover the DNR use permit, food and other expenses in preparation for the ride. The ride is hosted in April in an effort to avoid any intrusion to campers, since the official campground opens in May of each year. All funds that are raised during the Green Lake event go back into maintaining trails at Waterloo State Park. The actual horse ride consists of 8 miles out to Green Lake, which is a beautiful rustic campground located on M-52, north of Chelsea. Upon arrival to Green Lake the riders enjoy a wonderful lunch of hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, water, soft drinks and great fellowship. Following lunch, and a great deal of socializing, the riders leisurely make the 8 mile ride back to Waterloo Horse Camp, enjoying the fantastic trails, wildlife and beautiful scenery. The Green Lake Ride has successfully sold out for two consecutive years. There is a 100 horse limit on the ride to reduce the exposure to the trails by horses in order to preserve the landscape while allowing horse lovers to enjoy the gorgeous ride to Green Lake. In preparation for the first Green Lake ride in 2011, the Waterloo Horsemen donated 100 hours of their time towards maintenance on the trails to ready them for the one day ride. This mainly consisted of clearing
several downed trees and excessive brush in order to open up the trail area. In addition, they successfully reinforced and repaired the boardwalk area that horses would be utilizing in order to cross a marsh. In preparation for the second Green Lake Ride in 2012, the Waterloo Horsemen spent approximately 50 work hours on the trails prior to the ride, removing downed trees and clearing brush. The Green Lake Ride is a wonderful annual event that is made possible by the DNR and the support of the Waterloo Horsemen Association membership. The support for the ride and its continuation as an annual event has been overwhelming and positive. The Waterloo Horsemen Association is excited about the Green Lake Ride in 2013 and would like to invite horse lovers who are interested in participating in next year's event to contact the Association through their site: www.waterloohorsemen.org
“The ongoing partnership through this program with veterinary clinics and animal health suppliers has provided much-needed financial support for FFA chapters and veterinary students,” says Rob Kelly, vice president, U.S. Cattle and Equine Operations, Pfizer Animal Health. “Each and every veterinary clinic, retailer and animal health distributor understands the growing importance of supporting tomorrow's agricultural leaders, and this program gives them a chance to directly impact these young people.” Between Jan. 1 and March 31, 2012, a portion of funds from purchases of eligible Pfizer Animal Health cattle and equine products was directed to local FFA chapters, and/or veterinary student scholarships through the AABP and AAEP foundations. As a result, this spring's program means more than 1,300 designated FFA chapters from 46 states collectively received more than $1 million to support chapter activities. In addition, the AABP Foundation – Pfizer Animal Health Veterinary Student Scholarship Fund received more than $86,500, the AAEP Foundation received $16,000. This support makes a difference in the lives of FFA members and veterinary students. It means an opportunity for the Scott Community High School FFA chapter in Scott City, Kan., to improve its chapter and community. “FFA gives students a broad knowledge of agriculture, but it's not just agriculture. It also teaches leadership skills and helps prepare us for later on in life, whether preparing for college or for the workplace,” says Tyler Hall, chapter reporter, Scott Community High School FFA. “The support helps a lot. It gives us more time to focus on chapter development instead of just on fundraising.” In fact, this support has enabled students to gain
PFIZER ANIMAL HEALTH MADISON, N.J. Aug. 30, 2012: Pfizer Animal Health, in partnership with veterinarians, animal health suppliers and dealer customers, continues to support youth in agriculture through its Performance Pays Spring 2012 program. The spring program raised $1,173,421 to benefit FFA chapters nationwide, the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) Foundation and, new this year, the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Foundation. Since its inception in 2008, the support program has raised more than $4.7 million to benefit students through these organizations.

experience at events across the country and advance their knowledge, said Kiersten Scott, chapter president, Scott Community High School FFA. “ We get to better our education with additional classroom tools, and by going to as many as 15 CDEs (career development events) every year, including trips to livestock and meat judging events,” Scott says. “We are also able to use the support to give back to our community.” Financial support also is making a difference for people like Timothy Perano, a former University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine student who received a $5,000 scholarship from the AABP Foundation – Pfizer Animal Health Veterinary Student Scholarship Fund. The money helped alleviate some financial pressure with the opening of his own practice, Perano Veterinary Practice, located in Jackson, Calif., immediately following graduation. “I wasn't originally planning on starting my own practice immediately, so it's a tremendous blessing to have fewer student loans to deal with as I start out,” Dr. Perano says. “I really do appreciate all the donors who help support the students, as it's a great encouragement through school as you face the ever-increasing cost of tuition.” The newest beneficiary of the program, the AAEP Foundation, is committed to supporting the future of large-animal veterinarians through scholarships. “We are grateful for this opportunity to offer students the chance to focus on their studies and future careers — not the cost of tuition,” says C. Wayne McIlwraith, BVSc, Ph.D., DSc, FRCVS, Diplomate ACVS & ACVSMR, AAEP Foundation chairman. “We want to give every student the opportunity to extend their education, and the WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

GREAT LAKES STATE FAIR More than 50,000 people passed through the gates at the Suburban Collection Showcase for the Great Lakes State Fair during Labor Day weekend, according to Kent Roberts, vice chairman of the Great Lakes State Fair Board. The revived Michigan State Fair was reinstated after a threeyear absence and included livestock, agriculture, crafts, music, rides, games, Michiganmade food and beverages, contests, and the Shrine Circus. Roberts attributes the Fair's success to the financial support of the event's 20 sponsors and the promotional efforts of its agency partners. “We couldn't have revived this wonderful Michigan tradition without our army of sponsors
and we're extremely grateful for their support which enabled over 50,000 people to enjoy the State Fair for the first time in three years,” said Roberts. “A lot of credit for generating such a large turnout also goes to our promotional partners who did an excellent job getting the word out that the State Fair was returning.” Roberts is also excited about prospects for next year. “We're confident that our sponsors will return next year to help us carry on the great state tradition that we resurrected this year,” Roberts said. “With more months to plan, the fair should be even bigger and better next year.” Find the Great Lakes State Fair on Facebook or visit them online: www.greatlakesstatefair.org

cases where a horse is suffering from gastric ulcers, it may be helpful, although there is little scientific basis for this. • Ascorbic acid with bioflavonoids (such as quercetin, ruin, and hesperidins). This complex may allow for better vitamin C absorption. Bioflavonoids are also beneficial for respiratory allergies. • Ethyl cellulose coated ascorbic acid. This coating helps improve shelf life, especially when mixed with minerals that can promote oxidation.

Older Horses Need Supplemental Vitamin C Dr. Juliet Getty • www.gettyequinenutrition.com As if aging isn't hard enough! Creaky joints, sagging backs, loose teeth, increased infections, poor digestion, and embarrassing gassiness -- just a few of the problems associated with getting older (for your horse, not you!). But what was once a given in youth now turns into a deficiency – vitamin C must now be added to the diet. Young horses are able to produce all the vitamin C they need for every-day health; this is why you typically do not see it added to commercially fortified horse feeds. But as horses get up in years, they are less able to manufacture vitamin C. Decreased liver function is the main reason, but it can also be due to a decline in hindgut microflora and an increased propensity for pituitary dysfunction. Why is vitamin C so important? Vitamin C prevents oxidative damage to your horse's tissues and organs. In other words, it is an antioxidant. Antioxidants donate electrons to highly volatile, damaging molecules known as free radicals. Free radical production is accelerated during any type of physical or mental stress, muscle and joint inflammation, allergies, illness/injury, or exposure to toxins and pollutants. But once free radicals receive their missing electron from vitamin C, they are neutralized – calmed down – and are no longer harmful. Vitamin C has two other major roles While its antioxidant capability is paramount to your horse's overall health, vitamin C protects
your horse in two other significant ways: • Collagen synthesis. Collagen is a protein that creates a matrix within bones and joints to which minerals and other substances can attach. It is also part of connective tissue and maintains blood vessel integrity. Therefore enough vitamin C is important for keeping bones and joints healthy, reducing tooth loss, as well as preventing ruptured capillaries than can lead to abscesses. • Natural antihistamine. Horses that suffer from respiratory or skin allergies will benefit from additional vitamin C. As an antihistamine, it reduces the histamine response, making your horse more tolerant to allergens and hence, more comfortable.
Dosage Since vitamin C is water soluble, excess amounts are easily excreted in urine. Therefore, it is best to divide dosages between meals to avoid urinary losses. It also tends to be bitter-tasting, so less at one time will be better received. I routinely recommend vitamin C supplementation for all horses in their late teens (unless they are grazing on healthy pasture for at least 8 hours each day). Start by adding 3 to 5 mg per pound of body weight per day. Once your horse is over 20, give him 10 mg for every pound of body weight. For more intense needs, the
The right supplement Vitamin C is known as ascorbic acid. It can be derived from food or flowers (e.g., rose hips) or can be made in a laboratory. Regardless of the source, they are chemically identical, so there is no need to spend more on natural vitamin C. Ascorbic acid comes in several different forms, all similar in absorption and efficacy: • Buffered mineral ascorbates. These are less acidic. Horse preparations typically mix vitamin C with calcium or magnesium to ease digestive upset. These forms may be beneficial for horses with digestive ulcerations or chronic diarrhea. • Ester-C. Ascorbic acid is chemically esterified (attached) to calcium. It also contains vitamin C metabolites that may be better absorbed, and easier on the digestive tract lining. In

National Research Council (NRC) suggests an upper safe limit of 44 mg of vitamin C per kg of body weight. For an 1100 lb (500 kg) horse, this can be as high as 22,000 mg per day. Protect your supplement If you have a container of vitamin C sitting in your hot barn, protect it from a cruel fate — keep it in a cool, dry place where the container is sealed shut. Refrigeration is fine. Purchase small sizes unless you are feeding it to several horses and replace it after six months. Remember, your older horse needs vitamin C to replace what he no longer produces on his own. Therefore, he should be supplemented indefinitely, for the remainder of his life.

2. Keep your hand in neutral. Rather than holding your hand and arm up stiffly and leading or pulling your horse forward on the circle, let your arm hang down and “rest” while holding the end of the rope. This will also put some elasticity in the feel because your arm will lift and drop as your horse moves in and out on the circle, and pretty soon he will learn to be more consistent, leaving your hand hanging down in neutral.
Parelli Natural Horsemanship
The Difference Between Circling & Longeing By Linda Parelli www.ParelliConnect.com
I will always remember the first Pat Parelli clinic I went to in 1989, especially the look on my face when Pat said, “I am against longeing horses. Chasing the horse in mindless circles exercises the body, but the mind goes to pot." Wow, no wonder things weren't getting better with my horse back then. I would longe my Right-Brain Extrovert (a type of HorsenalityTM) Regalo for about 30 minutes before every ride because I was thought that was the only way to get him calmer, but after a month, 30 minutes was not enough. He just got fitter, but not any calmer! In that clinic with Pat I learned about the Circling Game and how different it is from longeing. Yes, your horse still circles around you but he has to THINK. Why? Because he has to maintain gait and maintain direction without any reminding or coaxing from you. In fact you have to stand still, relax and pass the rope around your back, staying completely neutral. Now of course things can go wrong – your horse changes gait, may even change direction or stop, but the key is to not do anything until that happens. Assigning your horse the responsibility of maintaining gait and direction is what keeps him thinking and connected to you. When longeing, you have to keep your horse moving forwards, preventing him from slowing down or turning, which involves a degree of micromanagement because it assigns no trust or responsibility to the horse. That's why most horses mentally tune o u t w h e n l o n g e i n g, a n d
BEWARE… you could make this happen in the Circling Game too! How to make sure you are not longeing! When warming your horse up on the ground, it's really easy to fall into the trap of longeing him. It's kind of easy and automatic to send your horse off in a circle to burn off pent-up energy and have it easily turn into mindless circling! Here are some tips on how to make sure you are playing the Circling Game and not longeing your horse:
3. Have some fun! Playing on the ground is a warm-up and so you need to let your horse express himself and then progressively give him things to think about rather than get too concerned about the shape of his body and how he's carrying himself right off the bat. In fact, when you make circling more interesting, he'll naturally start to use himself better, but if you are too particular too soon that's more like training (vs. warm-up) and can result in your horse getting tense, dull, disinterested or disconnected. Put the relationship first and everything will keep getting better. Think about how you can make the Circling Game more interesting yet still achieve the benefits of it; things like… • Walking from point A to point B while your horse keeps circling. This is called “Traveling Circles.” • Asking for upward and
1. Keep your feet still vs walking in circles with your horse. If you are walking circles with your horse, this acts more as a Driving Game because it's likely that when you stop, your horse stops too. This means your movement is stimulating, causing or supporting your horse's continued movement. It's your horse's responsibility to maintain gait without coaxing from you.
©2012 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • OCTOBER 2012
downward transitions on the circle. You can even ask for faster and slower speeds within the gait. Put a little energy in front of Zone 1 (your horse's head) to slow down (light, vertical wiggle of the rope or Carrot Stick) and behind Zone 5 (your horse's rear end) to speed up (with your stick and string, softly at first). And when it comes to introverted horses, asking them to go as slow as possible can be really fun and good reverse psychology that actually makes them want to go faster! • Putting an obstacle in the way, like a pole, a jump, barrels, something to go through/ between, a tarp, hill, water, etc. • Changes of direction — at walk, trot or canter — with simple or flying changes. • After a lap, half a lap, two laps, six laps... do something unexpected, like asking for some sideways, or send him over to touch something with his nose or feet. This works especially well for left-brain Horsenalities™ but could be a little too surprising for right-brain Horsenalities™! 4. Make it a game! When your horse doesn't do what you want, it's common to get frustrated or mad. But as you develop your skills as a horseman, you know that getting emotionally reactive only makes the horse worse.
Put the relationship first and everything will keep getting better. (42)

that let you apply cold to the legs without you standing and holding a hose for long stretches and without your horse having wet feet for an extended time. If you do not have these products, you might want to keep a couple of bags of frozen peas in the freezer for such use. The bags conform nicely to the leg when held in place by a flexible wrap. A hand massage of the legs is always a good idea after a hard workout or if you have a horse that is prone to leg swelling. Always massage downwards. On the front legs, start at the tip of the knee and work to the fetlock. On the hind legs, start at the top of the hock and massage to the fetlock. You may use Vetrolin to further cool the legs; or, if it's been a hard workout, you might want to use a leg brace. There are varying strengths of braces. A mild leg brace would be a combination of one-half part rubbing alcohol and one-half part Bigeloil. This stimulates circula-
Building a Partnership with Your Horse
MAINTAINING HEALTHY LEGS By Lynn Palm www.LynnPalm.com • 1-800-503-2824 It is imperative that we take good care of our equine partner's legs and the easiest way to check on the condition of your horse's leg is during daily grooming. While you are grooming your horse's legs, you should be checking for any scratches, cuts, sores, parasite eggs, and swelling. Treat scratches by washing and applying an appropriate antibacterial ointment from your first aid kit. Superficial cuts may be treated in the same manner, but never apply anything to a cut that may be deep enough to require sutures. Sores on white parts of the forelegs may be due to dew poisoning or photosensitivity (also found on white areas of the face). During the season in areas that have bot flies, check for the eggs on the legs and other parts of the body and remove them daily with a bot knife. If you feel swelling in your horse's legs, you need to consider six factors in investigating the cause: location, distribution, shape, sensitivity, texture, and heat. Unless you feel extremely confident in your horse care ability, you should consult with your veterinarian about persistent swelling. Note: if two or more of your horse's legs are swollen at the same time, the problem is probably not a local one, and you should consult with your vet! Leg Protection During Exercise • Splint Boots: The easiest to use form of leg protection during exercise is the splint boot. Splint boots protect the splint bone on the front and hind legs as well as offering light support for vulnerable tendons and protection for the fetlock. Besides being used during exercise, split boots protect the
horse's legs during turn out and leisure riding as well. Because they fasten with Velcro, splint boots are easy for even a novice to put on (be sure not to fasten too tightly which can interfere with circulation). • Polo Bandages: Polo bandages also protect the splint bone on the front and hind legs, and they offer greater support for tendons than do the split boots. There is the possibility of wrapping polo bandages incorrectly or too tightly and actually damaging soft tissue instead of protecting it. Make sure an experienced horse person teaches you the correct way to wrap and supervises several attempts. How to wrap polo bandages: Always start at the top and wind downward and then back up to the top where you fasten the bandage. Always wind from front to back so that when you tighten the bandage the pressure will be on the shinbone and not on the tendon which can actually damage the tendon. Most wraps now have Velcro fasteners that have replace the old bandage pins. Note: Many professionals recommend never leaving bandages on for more than twelve hours and always giving your horse a leg massage after removing them.
tion and soothes and cool tired, over-heated legs. For a stronger brace use Bigeloil full strength. A poultice differs from a brace in that it contains medicine to draw out swelling and soreness and contains a cooling agent. Standing bandages—also known as stable bandages—are used when the horse is going to be standing for several hours; e.g. in his stall at night or on long hauls in the trailer. They support the tendons and fetlock joint and suppress fluid. These bandages usually run from below the knee or hock down over the fetlock (shipping boots are longer), and they are thicker than exercise wraps for added warmth and protection. Standing bandages are also used to protect wounds and keep them sterile. Again, there is a fine line between keeping the bandages in place and wrapping them too tightly and impairing circulation, which would be especially serious if a wound is involved. Visit www.lynnpalm.com.
Cooling Legs After Exercise After your exercise and cool down routine, you should cool your horse's legs with a hose. Start on the foot and work upward to prevent forcing heat into the delicate hoof and foot. Thoroughly dry the legs and heels with a towel. If you notice an injury or a great deal of swelling after a workout, your horse may need more than just a quick cooling off with the hose. (Remember, in almost all cases, cold before heat on an injury.) Fortunately, today there are several products available
