The new site at www.equineaffaire.com has a notably elegant, clean, and user-friendly design developed by the staff of Equine Affaire, Inc. and brought to fruition by PromoNet Technologies, Inc. “Our goals in developing the new site included building the site design around our official artwork image, incorporating a host of useful new features, constructing the site to accommodate current trends in web/internet technology, and providing an easy and attractive avenue to extensive information about the events we produce,” explained Eugenia Snyder, President of Equine Affaire Inc. “One of our primary focuses was on ease of navigation and keeping the site as straightforward and user-friendly as possible.” While Equine Affaire's new site includes a lot of fun and useful new features including graphics, transitioning photos and logos, banners, daily countdowns to each show, social media contacts, search/print/email options, weather forecasts for each event, and personalized driving directions to each event facility, the true beauty in the new site lies not in its complement of razzle-dazzle features, but in its simplicity.

Attendees, exhibitors, and event participants can access w w w. e q u i n e a f f a i re . c o m quickly, and easily and gather detailed information on every aspect of each event. “While 'bells and whistles' on websites are a lot of fun,” Snyder confessed, “we believe that we can best serve our customers by saving them time and providing comprehensive event information in an uncomplicated and attractive format.” Since its inception, Equine Affaire has been dedicated to promoting the work of accomplished equine artists from throughout the United States and has selected an “official” image to incorporate in the company's marketing and event materials each year. The design of the home page of the new site was developed around the official image selected for 2011, a mixed media painting titled “Love Bites” by Pat LambrechtHould of Lakeside, MT. From the main home page visitors can move to individual home pages for each of the three annual events produced by Equine Affaire, Inc. as well as a home page dedicated to the company itself. Social media enthusiasts will want to stay tuned to Equine Affaire's new Facebook wall for the latest news, photos, and information about all of the incredible educational, shopping, and entertainment opportunities that will be featured at upcoming events. Fans of Facebook are invited to become fans of Equine Affaire and to post their event photos and share their event experiences on Equine Affaire's Facebook page. The addition of Twitter is likely to follow very soon!

veterinarian bills (if you have major medical as well as mortality - see below). As with human insurance, there are different types of policies for horses. There is one primary plan called “mortality” insurance. It pays you the value of your horse if he should die from an accident or illness. The value is usually established as the price you paid for him. Some insurance companies will allow for appreciation in the horse's value based on show ring or breeding success. However, as a horse's value increases, so do the premiums for insurance! There are other insurance choices besides mortality coverage. Additional insurance can be purchased in addition to mortality to cover special circumstances and situations such as major medical, theft, and loss of use. All equine insurance companies differ in what they offer. Be sure to carefully read the policy so that you understand what the policy covers and requires of you as

Building a Partnership with Your Horse -

ESTABLISHING YOUR RIDING GOALS By Lynn Palm www.LynnPalm.com • 1-800-503-2824 Before you select a trainer (or instructor), you must create goals for you and your horse. Before you actively set out on a quest to find a trainer, I recommend that you write down your personal riding objectives and the training goals for your horse that you want to achieve within 1) the next riding season, 2) one year, and 3) three years. You should be as specific as you can. Also, be realistic based on your earlier evaluations. Example of Goals: 1. Immediate goals - get to know my horse. Accomplish ground training: working inhand, longeing, working at l i b e r t y, m a n n e r s a n d obedience on the ground during standing, tying, bathing, clipping and trailer loading and unloading. I will constantly make evaluations and set up a training program to improve these important elements of ground training. 2. One year - Form a partnership with my horse under saddle. I should be able to ride in harmony the training that my horse has accomplished both in the arena and outside of the arena on the trails. I will plan weekly riding time both with and without instruction, and I will adhere strictly to that schedule. I will make weekly evaluations of my progress or lack of progress. After a year, I will reassess whether this horse is the correct one for me at this time. 3. Three years - Through-out this time, I will work toward my dream goals - for example, riding more distance on tougher terrain, learning to compete or to compete at a higher level of competition, learning to jump, or drive a horse, or to do flying lead changes.

This exercise will help you clarify your expectations of what you as a rider must accomplish and what your horse must learn if you are to achieve your goals. This exercise also gives you a blueprint that you can use to select the right trainer to help you achieve them as well as a way to measure your progress as you proceed with your training. Remember that your written goals are not set in stone! There are many factors in life that may prohibit you from accomplishing your goals, and you may need to revise them as you go along. The most important thing is that your written plan will give you a guide to help you assess your horse and assure that you are bringing out the best in him and that your horse is bringing out the best in you as a rider. As you plan your riding goals, you may also want to consider insuring your equine par tner. I've had many students ask me about this topic, so I wanted to touch on it here. The decision to insure your horse is a personal one. It will depend on many factors, among them are: the horse's value and replacement cost, the type of activities you plan to do with him, and the cost of the insurance. Some people feel that buying insurance is unnecessary and is just paying the insurance company on the chance that something will happen to your horse. While no insurance policy can replace a beloved equine partner, I feel it is a prudent expense that a new horse o w n e r s h o u l d c a re f u l l y consider. It can offset financial losses from replacement costs in cases of catastrophic loss and the accompanying

the horse's owner. While it pays to “shop around” for insurance, be sure that you are dealing with a reputable company that has a proven record of service to their customers. Asking a trusted equine professional for their re c o m m e n d a t i o n o n a n insurance provider is a great place to start your search. Selecting equine insurance requires doing your homework and then applying common sense to make your choice. The big difference is that you are dealing with a written document that is binding, and you must make sure you understand all “the fine print” before you sign on with any insurance company. If you do not understand anything in the p o l i c y, h a v e t h e a g e n t thoroughly explain it to you. If you are working with an equine professional, they can help you as well. to the horses rather than taking time to portion it out or make it last, says Coleman. But when money is tight, taking time to figure each horse's needs becomes higher priority. “Is an hour of your time worth saving hay at $300 per ton? Some people feed concentrates to try to extend their hay, but this only works if you can control hay intake,” says Coleman. Another way to save feed costs is to form a co-op, where several horse owners go together to buy in bulk at lower prices by the ton (rather than by the bale or sack), and share shipping expenses. If you don't want to deal with big round bales and must use the more expensive small square bales, it pays to buy large shipments or buy it directly out of the field. “If you contract 1000 bales out of the field, this works better for the producer,” says Freeman. You and your neighbors can get together and haul it. There are people buying in bulk (at lesser cost) and turning around to sell hay at higher price to horsemen who only want 10 bales. There is always a savings when buying hay in large quantities. “Consider building a pole barn to store hay,” says Mowrey. “If you can buy hay $2 to $2.50 cheaper per bale in summer out of the field versus paying more in winter, this savings will build a barn. Twenty years ago, an Arabian breeder in North Carolina was using 90 tons a year. Hay at that time was $1.50 per bale out of the field versus $3.50 or more during winter. He paid for construction of his hay barn in less than two years from savings on hay.” A small operation could justify a smaller shed to store 20 to 40 tons of hay - a year's supply for 6 to 10 horses that don't have pasture. A hay

HORSES AND TIGHT BUDGETS By Heather Smith Thomas, Green Grass Features In this still-shaky economy, horse owners are finding ways to trim costs. David Freeman, PhD., from the Depar tment of Animal Science at Oklahoma State University, says he gets a lot of calls from people wondering what they can do. “Most people don't want to hear my first words of advice. The easiest way to reduce costs is reduce your number of horses,” he says. Horsemen don't want to look at that option, but if keeping horses has a serious impact on your budget, this may be what you have to do. Most of us prefer to look at other ways to address the challenges. The place to start is to figure out where the money is being spent, looking at areas of waste, duplication, unnecessary purchases, etc. There are numerous ways to save money, but you have to first know where it's going. REDUCE FEED COSTS There are several ways to shrink the feed bill - reduce waste, buy more wisely, and extend your pasture. Bob Mowrey, PhD., Extension Specialist at North Carolina State University, says if you use round bales, switch to wrapped bales, to protect them from moisture and spoilage. After unwrapping, feed the round bales in an enclosed structure like a runin shed, or use a hay enclosure to keep the bales dry while they're being eaten. Other structures like hay tubes allow more than one horse to access the hay at once and cuts feed loss and wastage from the typical 30 percent down to less than 5 percent.

If you do not have equipment to deal with round bales, a spear can be added to the top of a box blade. “Most farms have a tractor blade attachment for scraping the road, plowing snow, etc. and you can put the spear on this. The box blade acts like a catch on the bottom of the bale and the spear is mounted on the top of the blade. Most 30horsepower tractors, like people use for pulling a manure spreader or blading the road, can move a small round bale on a front-end loader or 3-point hitch. You can't lift it very high to stack the bales, but can move them around,” explains Mowrey. Bob Coleman, PhD., Ext. Specialist (Department of Animal Science, University of Kentucky), says that using feeders helps control waste. “Studies at Texas Tech showed horses utilize 35 percent more from a feeder versus no feeder in a protected area like a shed,” he says. Even more is wasted if the bale is outside, subjected to spoilage from weather. Without a feeder, horses pull hay from the bale, step on it, then won't eat it. “Another thing you can do is feed only the amount they need,” says Coleman. The average 1000-pound horse requires 2 percent of his body weight in forage (20 pounds). You can't regulate intake using big bales fed free choice, but you can when feeding small square bales, by figuring weight of the bales and daily feeding the proper amount. Many people overfeed. If they have two horses and 60pound bales, they often think it's easier just to throw a bale

shed doesn't need sides - just a roof with enough overhang to keep moisture from running down alongside the stack. “A co-op could contribute to building a large hay barn, where hay for farms in your neighborhood could be stored,” says Mowrey. This can be a business investment for the farm that owns the land where the shed is built, leasing out space to other horse owners. If you are shipping it in, hay can go to one location to be unloaded. “This makes it cheaper (per ton) than buying small amounts from a middleman, and you can split it with your neighbors,” says Coleman. Working together can often save money, and pooling can create alliances and friendships. This can be a positive spin-off from hard times. “Your local saddle club might be interested in creating a buying co-op. Horse owners could pay their hay money to the saddle club, and one check from the club could pay for hay,” says Coleman. This might be more attractive to a hay dealer or hauler than having 10 people show up with 10 checks. Freeman says the level of success in any cooperative venture depends on how you do business. “A partnership is only as strong as the desire of the various parties to get along together. In these economic times, many of us will change our attitudes and not be so competitive or so selfish about our own needs,” says Freeman. For more information contact your local extension specialist. For feed and nutrition questions be sure to contact your equine vet. This article will be continued in the November 2010 issue of Saddle Up! Magazine. WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

T. J. Casey, Montana T. J. Casey, Cowboy From The Soul ~ Webster defines “soul” as “...credited with the functions of thinking and willing, and hence determining all behavior.” He also calls the soul “the moral or emotional nature of man.” That deep part of T. J. Casey is pure cowboy – and it clearly determines his behavior. The soul of T. J. Casey was shaped in him by the precepts of his mama and daddy, by his childhood in Montana’s beautiful, but harsh and remote, Pryor Mountains, and by close association with horses and cattle before he can even remember. Living primitively (by today’s standards), with no electricity, telephone or indoor plumbing taught him just how unimportant money and possessions really are in life. Mentored by old cowboys and old horses, T.J. learned honesty, humor, respect, trustworthiness, and strength of character. Wild cattle and younger horses taught him mental and physical brawn and agility, and developed in him a good measure of toughness and tenacity. Interwoven with these forces was the powerful oral history of the cowboy, which T. J. was steeped in through poems, stories and songs, passed down from those who’d gone before. That culture became woof and warp of his soul, so that the songs and poems spawned there today bear witness of and are true to his cowboy heritage. Spending two thirds of his life so far in a saddle, working with cattle and horses on ranches across the West, gives T. J. Casey and his words and music an authenticity impossible to manufacture ... they are truly “of the land.” Being on stage as an entertainer nationwide across the last three decades gives T. J. Casey and his words, music, and presentation a polish and presence impossible to manufacture ... they are truly “for the audience.” When this larger-than-life artist steps under the spotlight, looks you in the eye, strums the strings on his guitar and opens his mouth to sing, the cowboy from his soul communicates with you...you live the song, the poem, the story. You smell trail dust and campfire smoke, feel sweat and grit on your brow, taste the blessed refreshment of clear spring water after a long, hot day of work... Experience T. J. Casey, Cowboy from the Soul, at the Novi Equestrian Expo. Solo, or as a duo or trio with his cowboy friends, this many-faceted entertainer will pack the house and send them home satisfied. the right alternating with four leg yield strides to the left. To ask for a leg yield, the rider sits tall with eyes forward and shoulders parallel to the horse's shoulders. The rider sits with a little bit more weight on the inside seat bone (think 'lower the inside hip'). The inside leg pulses at the girth in rhythm with the horse's strides to ask the horse to move sideways to the outside. The rider drives with the inside leg as the inside hind leg starts to swing forward. This is the only moment when the rider can influence the direction that the inside hind leg will move. The rider's outside leg, slightly behind the girth, can drive the horse forward if necessary. However, the rider should not hold the outside leg steady against the horse's side because this would restrict the horse's sideways movement to the outside. Position the outside leg slightly behind girth, ready if needed to keep the horse's haunches from swinging too far to the outside or to drive the horse forward. The inside rein positions the horse's head so that the eye is slightly visible to the inside. Half halts on the outside rein prevent the shoulders from slipping to the outside. Check for common rider errors when the horse does not leg yield correctly: If the rider tightens her thigh muscles and draws her leg up as she applies inside leg, she pushes her weight onto her outside seat bone. This blocks the horse's ability to move sideways to the outside. Some riders collapse at the waist or lean their torso to the inside as they attempt to weight the inside seat bone. Or when riders realize they are weighting the wrong seat bone, they drop their inside shoulder in an effort to counterbalance what they are doing. Either puts the rider's weight on the outside seat bone and blocks the horse's sideways movement.

LEG YIELD BASICS By Nancy Wesolek-Sterrett, Dressage Dept. Head Leg yielding is the basic lateral movement that we teach young horses. While continuing to move forward with the haunches following the same track as the shoulders, we also ask the horse to move sideways. Rhythmic on-off pressure from the inside leg, driving as the inside hind leg comes off the ground, encourages the inside hind foot and forefoot to reach slightly across body's midline as the horse continues moving forward. Leg yielding helps horses develop balance, stretch and supple their muscles. By nature, horses tend to move into a physical pressure. So early in the training process, we must teach a green horse to move away from a physical pressure rather than leaning into it. We start teaching this in the horse's stall and in the groundwork we do to prepare the horse for his education under saddle. Gradually the horse learns that if he moves away from a physical pressure rather than resisting it, the pressure goes away. The horse learns that he can relieve a pressure by moving forward away from it or he can relieve it by moving sideways away from it. The concept that moving away from a pressure results in the reward of the pressure going away is fundamental to the application of all of the natural aids we use to communicate with horses when we start riding. Leg yielding teaches a horse that he can go forward and sideways at the same time in response to a leg pressure. It is the simplest lateral movement for the horse to perform because it does not require any bend.

Leg yielding is basic to many of the things we ask our horses to do. Consider the green horse on his first few rides in an arena. We may want the horse to move alongside the arena rail or wall but the horse's natural tendency is to dive into the middle of the arena where he has plenty of space all around him. So we use the on-off pressure of our inside leg to encourage him to work closer to the rail. As we start riding our green horse and he becomes accustomed to carrying our weight, we begin to use our inside leg to encourage him toward the arena barrier. The response we get will depend in part on the thoroughness of our ground lessons and in part on the horse's individual temperament. Initially, the horse may angle his body and lead with his shoulders as he tries to move sideways. Or he may move his feet sideways but not forward. If the rider fails to reward any forward or sideways movement by re m o v i n g l e g p re s s u re temporarily, some horses will dive to the inside as they revert to pushing against pressure. We work in both directions, asking the horse to stay on or close to the rail, until the horse understands and responds to the pressures of each leg. When he responds comfortably to inside leg pressure to move forward and sideways staying parallel to the rail, we can start asking for this response in different places. Start on the centerline and move to the rail. Then move from the rail to the centerline. Ride the horse in stair step fashion, alternating four strides straight forward with four leg yield strides. Ride the horse in zigzag fashion with four leg yield strides to

Some riders tense their muscles and brace their feet in their stirrups, pushing their outside leg forward instead of keeping it at or slightly behind the girth. If the rider uses too much inside rein, the horse cannot move forward with its body in a straight line. The horse's neck should stay in the middle of its chest and the rider should see no more than the corner of the horse's inside eye. If the rider can see the side of the horse's face, she’s bending the horse's neck with too much inside rein. If the rider tips forward, she lightens her seat and the horse may speed up or slow down instead of moving sideways. If the rider does not maintain a steady the rhythm, the horse will not cross its legs over correctly. A lazy horse that does not move forward rhythmically may not cross over at all. Horses that get quick tend to have tight muscles that make it hard to stretch and cross over. They may quicken their stride to avoid crossing over. While first level dressage tests ask horses and riders to perform a leg yield, leg yielding is primarily a training exercise. Leg yielding into corners or leg yielding out along a circle helps a horse with balance problems. Leg yielding can loosen up shortcoupled horses with bunchy muscles and help move them from choppy to swingy strides. Leg yielding helps get the horse listening obediently to the rider's leg aids. Do leg yields at the walk or the trot depending on what the individual horse's conformation and issues may be. Alternating leg yields in the warm up ring is an excellent exercise to get the horse working off the rider's leg aids with relaxation and hindquar ter engagement before riding into the ring for a test or class. fulfill this critical requirement. Although the densest forms of energy are found in fats, it is carbohydrates (both soluble and non-soluble) that are used as primary dietary energy sources. Soluble Carbohydrates Soluble carbohydrates, such as starches and sugars, are defined by their ability to break down into simple sugars (called glucose), which is then absorbed by the small intestine and assimilated into the blood stream. Insulin continues the process by transferring glucose to the liver and muscles where it is stored for utilization on demand. This energy reserve, termed glycogen, is the resource that provides immediate power bursts essential to physical activity. The starch from corn, oats, barley, and molasses are most commonly equated with soluble carbohydrates. Horses involved in intense anaerobic activities such as racing must have adequate soluble carbohydrates in their diet to maintain adequate muscle glycogen levels. Insoluble Carbohydrates Insoluble carbohydrates are derived from the fiber source, cellulose, which is digested by microbes in the cecum and large intestine. Insoluble carbohydrates take over 24 hours to process and are transformed into volatile fatty acids. These acids are eventually absorbed and held by the liver in reserve as an additional energy source. The nutrients found in forages such as hay, grass, beet pulp, and soybean hulls are the main suppliers of insoluble carbohydrates. Balancing Carbohydrates Feeding excess amounts of soluble carbohydrates present in grain often cause the most trouble. The starches, when broken down in the stomach and small

THE LINK BETWEEN CARBOHYDRATES & PERFORMANCE By Toby Raymond, Cargill Animal Nutrition

Nutrition affects all vital aspects of our horses' health and performance. Recent discoveries in the medical world have linked carbohydrates to many digestive disorders including colic, laminitis, hyperactivity, developmental orthopedic disease (DOD) and cushing's disease. The relationship between carbohydrates and disease needs to be clarified in order for us to determine whether this energy resource is a help or hindrance to the equine diet. Understanding the Digestion Process Horses are referred to as continuous grazers, and will often forage for up to 16 hours per day. Because their stomachs are exceptionally small and comprise just 7% of their digestive tracts, horses are limited in their ability to absorb nutrients from large quantities of food at one time. Because of a horse's eating patter n and its stomach's restrictions, the process is completed quickly, in only 30 to 90 minutes. The stomach begins the digestion process by secreting hydrochloric acid (HCI) and pepsin to break

down materials before passing them on to the small intestine. The small intestine is where the majority of the nutrients, including protein, some carbohydrates and fat are digested and where many essential vitamins and minerals are absorbed. From here, most of the matter and liquids continue on to the hind-gut (large intestine), which digests fiber (insoluble carbohydrates) and the remaining soluble carbohydrates (starches and sugars), utilizing specialized bacteria and protozoa in a fluid environment. In the hind-gut, minerals are absorbed and many vitamins a re s y n t h e s i z e d u s i n g microbial action. Finally, the undigested material is eliminated through the rectum and anus as feces or manure. U n d e r s t a n d i n g Carbohydrates There are six main categories of nutrients necessary to a horse's survival: water, carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals. While energy isn't considered a category unto itself, almost 90% of nutrient intake is required to

intestine, are thought to release a surplus of glucose and insulin into the blood stream. Excessive starch and sugar intake can lead to metabolic upsets in both the young developing horses and older animals. High levels of starch and sugar have been associated with hyperexcitability and behavioral problems; when residual starches enter the cecum and are left to ferment, colic and associated gastro-intestinal disorders can result. Insoluble carbohydrates (fiber), on the other hand, are fundamental to an efficient digestive system, and therefore should not be compromised in an effort to reduce starches and sugars in the diet. A general guideline is to feed at least one to two pounds for every 100 pounds of body weight per day. For example, a 1,000 pound adult horse would need an estimated 10–20 pounds of hay and may be fed even more depending on its workload and condition. It is recommended to only feed the amount of concentrates necessary to maintain sufficient body condition and balanced nutrient levels. Dietary research indicates that by increasing dietary fiber and fat while reducing soluble carbohydrate intake will benefit overall health of the horse and reduce the risks linked with starch overload.
