Michigan State University leaders tour the state to get input from residents EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State University has long been known as a premier source of information and training related to agriculture and natural resources. As the university prepares to feed a hungry world while respecting the environment, training young people for success, keeping Michigan healthy and helping communities thrive, leaders there are embarking on a “What's Now? What's Next?” tour to gather input from residents about the future priorities of the state's premier land-grant institution. “Our hope is to gather input from our stakeholders -- parents of students and future students, people who use MSU Extension services, those who rely on our research to make their homes, businesses and families stronger,” explained Fred Poston, dean of the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Re s o u r c e s ( C A N R ) . “ I t ' s important that we don't work in a bubble but work with the people we serve to ensure we are meeting their needs.” Poston is one of four MSU leaders who will be available to talk with residents during the “What's Now? What's Next” tour. He will be joined by MSU Extension Director Tom Coon, AgBioResearch Director Doug Buhler and Kelly Millenbah, associate dean for academic and student affairs for the CANR. The foursome will make a dozen stops throughout the state. The first took place during Michigan Ag Expo in July in East Lansing. “We know that people feel very passionately about this institution, and we want to make

sure that our priorities line up with the real needs of the people we serve,” Poston added. “That is what the land-grant philosophy is all about.” “What's Now? "In the Classic alone, the 2013 show paid people from 35 different states and six Canadian Provinces and we had money earners from Germany and Mexico, as well." Nowlin added that in order to be eligible to win any of that big money, foals must be enrolled in the program, and an important enrollment deadline is right around the corner. "Foals can be enrolled for $200 as long as the enrollment is postmarked by September 15 of their weanling year," she commented. "After that, it's $250 per foal through December 31 of the weanling year." She noted that people are getting foals enrolled earlier and earlier each year. "It's something they plan for, and a lot of people send in their foal enrollments when they send off their registration application to the breed associations." The National Reining Breeders Classic, begun in 1997, is the most enduring stallion incentive program in reining history and over the years the show has paid out over $15 million. NRBC FOAL DEADLINE NEARS Byars, Oklahoma - Since its inception, the National Reining Breeders Classic program has become an integral part of raising reining horse prospects. The 2013 NRBC Show, held in April at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy, Texas, paid over $1.2 Million. And the money was well-spread around the country, from Alaska to

PONY CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS Six outstanding Pony Club members were awarded college scholarships through the United States Pony Clubs, Inc. for outstanding sportsmanship, stewardship, and leadership through horsemanship. The recipients are chosen by a scholarship committee and administered by Pony Club based on the requirements for

each opportunity. The Dorothy Renfro Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually for higher education to an active Pony Club member who exhibits the qualities that Dorothy Renfro valued most: leadership, horse management, and volunteering time and energy to beneficial activities. She hoped to encourage horsemen and women in their academic pursuits. This year, there are two recipients of the Renfro Memorial Scholarship. Kaitlyn Vorbroker, a C-3 Trad from Walnut Creek Pony Club, is currently attending Otterbein University, majoring in Business Administration with an Equine Science minor. Kaleigh Quinn, a B-Trad/ H-B HM from Autumn Ridge Pony Club, is currently attending Quinnipac University, majoring in Athletic Training/Physical Therapy. The Stanley R. and Martha C. Helbert Scholarship is awarded annually to Pony Club members pursuing Liberal Arts degrees in areas such as literature, music, theater, and visual arts. Recipient Molly Ryan, a C-2 HM/FL from Sinking Creek Pony Club, has been accepted to Virginia Tech, and plans to major in English. The Pony Club Jubilee Scholarships are awarded to Pony Club members for excellence in academic pursuits and outstanding achievements in Pony Club. Applicants have achieved a Pony Club certification of C-2 or higher. The two recipients of the Pony Club Jubilee Scholarships are Emma Deane, an H-A Trad from Moon Valley Pony Club, who is currently attending the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, and Samantha Pitcher, an H-HM from River Bend Pony Club, has been accepted to the University of Virginia and plans to major in Engineering. The Annual Convention is the world's largest continuing education event dedicated to equine veterinary practice and is expected to attract approximately 6,000 equine veterinarians, veterinary students, technicians and exhibitors. If you have an enclosed area that is at least 80 feet long and 60 feet wide, you can practice these transition by working in a large “U” shape with the long sides of the “U” about 70 feet and the curved bottom part of the “U” about 50 feet. Set up two cones six feet apart at the beginning and end of both long sides of the “U.” Set up two cones six feet apart in the middle of the curve. You will use these cones as guides and ride between them. Enter the “U” at one long side and transition from the walk to a slow trot. At the curve, drop down to a walk, and then as you come out of the curve into the straight line, transition up to the slow trot. Drop back to a walk as you reach the end of the “U.”

Enter the “U” again and move from a walk to a medium trot. Drop down to a slower trot in the curve, but as you come out of the curve, lengthen into a fast trot. At the end of the straight line, transition to a slow trot and then to a walk. Next, enter the “U” at a fast trot, slow the trot in the curve, and step it up again on the other straight side. Transition to a slow trot and then a walk at the end of the “U.” Your goal should be to go from a walk into a smooth transition to a fast trot within four or five strides. Once you can do this, try a fast trot on both straight sides of the “U” and a walk on the curve. Try practicing varying speeds and improve your control with a friend on the trail. Ride side by side and keep your horses even as you transition from a slow trot and up to a fast trot and then back down to a slow trot to a walk. Always maintain a safe distance apart of no less than eight to ten feet. Only ride fast gaits on the trail if the footing is suitable! Horse Association & Club News BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS Although we're well into the summer season, we refuse to think about the changes that will be coming in the not-too-distant future. We're intent on enjoying one of the best summers we've had in several years and the weather has been great. Temperatures and humidity have been very civilized and even the bugs have been tolerable. This has made for some exceptional riding on our trails, and many BTRA members and other trail riders have been visiting the Brighton Recreation Area. July was highlighted with an open ride and big cookout that was hosted by our organization and our friends, the Pinckney Trail Riders Association. As we have reported before, BTRA and PTRA have much in common. Our respective State recreation areas are just a few miles apart, a number of us are members of both clubs, and we've held joint events in the past – in particular our annual Christmas parties. So this year we decided to hold a warm weather event and it came off very well. We reported last month that we were joined by several DNR staff at our July Board of Directors meeting. Concerns about our horseman's campground were discussed and we reviewed several options. This process has continued and one possibility is receiving close attention. It's not quite the time to go into details but when some decisions are made and timelines identified, we will certainly make readers aware of what's coming up at the Brighton Re c r e a t i o n A r e a . I n t h e meantime, the existing campground remains open to the riding public so don't hesitate to come spend a few nights with us. The nearby staging area with its electric water pump is available to all campers, as well as day riders. September is going to feature a new event: the “Chilly Chili Ride.” The “Chilly” part is easy

enough to figure out, although the odds are that the temperature on September 21st will be warm and pleasant. The “Chili” part is as follows: One of our Board members, Sue Charleville, has a home that is not far off a portion of the Brighton Rec trails, and she's offered to host a lunch featuring chili and other picnic favorites. Participants will start their ride that day at our staging area, ride the trails to the point where they can ride right into Sue's barnyard, dismount and enjoy the lunch that Sue will prepare. After eating, they can socialize for a while and then hit the trails back to the staging area. It the first time we've put on an event like this and we know it's going to be a success. In the meantime we'll continue to ride our trails at every opportunity and take advantage of this beautiful weather. As always, guests are more than welcome. - Mark Delaney, BTRA Sec.

We have also given the Park a check for over $3300 for our half of the cost for our new pavilion. We received a match from the DNR Match Fund Grant for this project for the same amount. We really appreciate how our Park DNR has helped to grow our equestrian part of this wonderful Recreation Area. Also, The Michigan Horse Council voted to give our club $2000 to help pay for costs to complete the trailhead parking expansion. Thanks MHC!!! FORT CUSTER HORSE FRIENDS ASSOCIATION Hello Trail Rider's! This will be the last notice of our Annual Fall Equestrian Campout onSeptember 20th-22nd. It will be the last time to camp in the beautiful Fort Custer Recreation area this year. Plan on coming to see our new trail system throughout the park with all the wonderful creek crossing on every trail. Our campout will be held in the special event area at Whitford Lake. This is a lovely grassy area with plenty of parking for the event. We will be putting in more picket poles before the campout as well as the row of pines that are already trimmed for picket line use. Porta potties, water for horses and a trailer for manure disposal will be on site. The weather has been wonderful for enjoying the trails. The CMO at Yankee Springs was a great success. We were even able to talk a few campers who just came to ride into trying the CMO. I think we have converted them because they came in second on the short course on their first try! The trails were in great shape and 41 riders competed on Saturday. Thank you so much, Trudi and Luann for putting on your first ever CMO. The course was great with lots of miles to cover, food was

fabulous, prizes were wonderful and the company pleasant. It is so nice to be part of the Competitive Mounted Orienteering in Michigan. We are able to gloat that we have the top ranked long course team in the nation and second place short course team, junior rider and long course individual. Congratulations Gurlz in Gear for your well earned first place standing. Also Ran has done a great job getting back to competition and is holding second place for the short course. Out of the top five short course teams, three of them are from Michigan. Katelyn Potter has secured the second place junior rider and Michigan is proud to have three of the top four junior riders. We are also honored to have the very dedicated Royla Westphal as the second place individual rider for the long course. Michigan has a strong Competitive Mounted Orienteering following but we would love to see some new faces. Many riders came out for the beginners clinic at Sleepy Hollow and it would be great to see more riders on the trails. On September 14th and 15th we have a ride at the Cummings Center in Mt. Morris with stalls available. The last two weekends for CMO are October 12th and 13th at Fort Custard in Battle Creek and October 19th and 20th at Camp Eberhart in Three Rivers. Trail Riders to raise money for the Michigan Hay Bank by hosting a Proud Lake to Kensington Circle Ride. Of course you can always ride from Kensington to Proud Lake as well! The ride will start at either staging area and lunch will be provided at both areas. We are also planning on a potluck for side dishes and desserts. The cost of the ride is $15.00 with the majority of money going directly to the Michigan Hay Bank. As of press time we are not sure of the exact registration time, but it should be between 910 A.M. The Michigan Hay Bank provides Hay for horses in need. In the Youth Working Ranch Horse; Liz and Master Jays Pep finished an exciting 2nd – for the Reserve World Championship. Liz also showed Bugs Last Skip in the Showmanship (3rd) and the Ranch Riding (9th). In the Amateur Showmanship; Anna Hostetler and Larkangel were 6th and placed 7th in the Boxing, as well. Frosty L'il Flo Rida and Anna were 10th in Senior Reining and Sara Harwell placed 8th overall in the Ranch Riding Sweepstakes and 5th overall in Horsemanship with Cause I'm Kendall. Horse Association & Club News SLEEPY HOLLOW TRL RIDERS July's Dennis Austin Memorial Ride was a busy weekend for all! Sleezy Barb Horsewear hosted the free CMO Beginners Clinic that was very well attended. Barb Drake and Linda Kraai used instruction booklets with maps and compasses for users learning this event. There was a walking course to practice on first, and then folks hit the trail. Thanks to Pat Brown who registered the campers and officiated the Glowstick Poker Ride. That fun contest was won by Chanda Donnon, who drew three aces! Gale Moore and friends cooked community breakfast each morning. Thanks guys for getting us up and ready! Saturday afternoon SHTRA hosted a homemade ice cream social. Thanks to Don and Pat Brown and Carrie Barr who provided the ingredients, ice cream churners and the elbow grease. What a yummy treat! The sixth annual stick horse race was held before the potluck supper. Therese and Dave Kline organized that funny event. Thanks for pulling the slips, getting the gang off and racing giving us a few laughs. All enjoyed the trails and noticed the recent trail improvements. Labor Day weekend will be a trail trimming open camping weekend. Register at the Horseman's staging area. Bring your pruners and loppers as we really need to cut out the west loop and finish trimming the east loop. The brush has really grown so much this year. If you can furnish an ATV, please contact us. Sept. 20-22 Ride like a Pirate, will be a great time to dust off yer pirate costume (optional) and attend The Great Treasure Hunt! Saturday Sept. 21 10am-2pm, $10.00 per entry. All pirates will be looking for the horse height treasure chests—so ye don't have to dismount. Old Business: YSTRA Web site update. A Horse/Trail Riding/Camping Information page has been built. Currently there are homemade fly spray recipes. Send your page ideas to taylorkl@tds.net. Ron has asked Scot Roberts from Sign Depot to give a quote for a 4x6 decal for the side of our tool crib and how much for a new YSTRA banner to replace the one that was lost. Ron will submit the quote for the replacement banner to the MHC for reimbursement. YSTR received $410.00 grant money from MHC which will be used for camp improvements. The YS DNR office will match that amount for a total of $1,600.00. 131 yards of gravel will be purchased for camp road improvements within the campground and to improve some of the camper parking pads. The Sand removed from the current camp road will be used to create a horse rolling pit located by the day riding parking lot. Steve Pennepacker and Tom Chaffee will provide the equipment and do the work on the road. Kathy Taylor made a motion the club provide cash for fuel for Steve and Tom, $50.00 for Steve, $25.00 for Tom. Ron will order the gravel to be delivered the week of August 12th this will be put in the day parking area so if you come to ride that week you might have to park in the camping area due to the gravel pile. Ron will have 2 invoices for the gravel, one for YSTRA to pay the other half for YS DNR to pay. Skip suggested stakes be placed at the camp sites that

WEST MI APPALOOSA REG. We made it through our Summer Sizzler show at MSU which was co-hosted by the MApHA and the WMAR. We had good sized classes with exhibitors from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Missouri. The Non-Pros put on their Fiesta with lots of great munchies along with the Calcutta of the Open Stumps class riders. Bidding was hot and heavy for many of the exhibitors. Sue Scobee once again took home the win, but not without some fierce competition! Thanks to everyone who participated. The MApHA Classic show will be history by the time this goes to print, but I'll have a write up on it in the next newsletter. The last WMAR approved show will be the Freedom Classic on Sept. 1415 in New Castle, IN. As a heads up for next year, WMAR has booked the fairgrounds at Centreville for July 19-20, 2014. That is one week later than we were this year, so maybe we can entice some of those Appaloosa National & Youth World show exhibitors to come. I've been told that the Michigan youth will be selling Yankee Candles the end of August thru mid- September for a fund raiser. They would make great Christmas gift, too. The Non Pros will start collecting donated clean usable tack for the tack sale and soon we will be taking on items for

need the gravel. It was also suggested an 'Under Construction' sign be created to warn day riders and campers. Tom and Steve will set the day. Trail Update: Our trails are looking good. The 9 mile trail is clear except for a short area at Sager Road South which still have overhanging brush. The old well head on the 9 mile was found, the pipe is still there. Ron is working with Sara Shafer to get permission to put a hand pump on this well. Our vision is to see this area as a rest stop with a water tank, hitching post, and table. Euchre tournament: This was a big success; we had 18 players and raised $257.00. YSTRA will match these dollars for a total of $514.00, to be donated to Cancer Families United org. Simon Hernandez was our big winner! He won $27 for being the biggest loser for the day. New Business: Nena Redmond is the Chairperson for the Halloween Extravaganza which will be held October 19th rain or shine. A meeting for everyone who wants to help out will be held at the YS campground pavilion, Sept. 4th at 6:00. There will be a haunted ride, a judged costume class for you and your horse with a $50.00 Grand Prize. Lunch provided. Kathy T suggested YSTR recognize juniors who help promote trail riding at our annual meeting. A list of juniors was compiled and there were lots of award ideas. Another campout is planned at the OutBack near Stanwood for Oct. 11th. Call Sue at the OutBack 231-972-7255 at least 30 days in advance to make reservations. Tell them you will be camping with the YSTRA group. Adopt-a-Highway: All volunteers must watch the safety video and sign release forms before we can work on the roads. The triggering factor here is typically a rapid change from pasture to a hay or hay and concentrate diet. Everyone knows that diet changes should be introduced gradually but many think this applies only to concentrates like grain and brans. In reality, rapid changes in hay are also capable of disrupting the digestive tract. A drop in water intake can complicate the colic risk. Live grasses are typically around 80% water while hays are 10% or even less. The solution to all these problems is a planned gradual introduction of supplemental feeding. If you offer hay to horses that also have the option of a highly nutritious pasture, odds are they will consume very little, if any, even if they are kept off the pasture for part of the day. The return of an appetite for hay is a good indicator that you need to start supplemental feeding. Begin offering hay after grasses have reached full height and gone to seed. If the pastures are kept mowed, begin this no later than mid to late August in temperate areas. With crowded pastures, begin when grass has been grazed down to 1.5 to 2 inches in height. Start with about 5 lbs per average size horse. It is ideal to do this with a covered field feeder bunk or hay racks in a run in shed to minimize wastage if the horses are not interested

How and When to Compensate for Failing Pastures By Dr. Eleanor Kellon, VMD Staff Veterinary Specialist for Uckele Health & Nutrition

If you are fortunate enough to have pasture for your horses, you want to get the most out of it that you can. However, as pasture quality and/or quantity starts to drop, it's best to start supplemental feeding sooner rather than later. It's not necessarily a good indicator of pasture quality just noting that horses are busy with their noses to the ground. Their instinct is to diligently search for the best vegetation. Seeing their noses down does not necessarily mean they are consuming much pasture or that what they are eating is high quality. The pasture does not have to be eaten down close to the ground before you have issues. As grasses mature, predictable changes occur. The fiber fractions progressively increase, which reduces the percentages of sugars, soluble fiber and other easily fermented fractions. As a result, the grass becomes both less nutritious in terms of calories and also less palatable. Protein also drops as the grass matures and may do so at a more rapid rate than the decline in calories. Even grasses that still

look very green may be borderline to deficient in protein. This is particularly a problem with tropical grasses and pastures that are not being maintained or soil-tested to make sure they have enough nitrogen. Mineral concentrations drop as the grass matures. Ratios, particularly of trace minerals, may be similar to younger strands of the same grass but the total amount being delivered is less. As you might expect, levels of enzymes and B vitamins decline as growth stops and after the seed is set. Once grass is in a dormant state and has faded color, all the above changes are at their worst. Vitamin A, E and C levels have also plummeted. Poor quality pastures pose another danger in addition to their declining nutritional value. As the grass becomes less palatable and/or plentiful, horses are more likely to experiment with eating plants they normally would not touch. This leads to fall being a peak season for plant poisonings. Studies have also shown that fall is a high risk season for colic.

yet. When they are cleaning up the 5 lbs/day, begin increasing gradually, as needed to maintain a good body condition, until full winter ration is reached. Keep coarse plain salt available in close proximity to the hay, or sprinkle directly on the hay, 1 to 2 oz/horse/day. Adequate salt is essential to maintaining good water intake. Even horses on good pasture need salt too. Licks are convenient but coarse loose livestock salt is often consumed more readily. Pastures, like hays, also have mineral imbalances and horses will benefit from appropriate minerals. If you begin to see deterioration of coat or hoof quality late in the grazing season but without weight loss and while still eating significant amounts of pasture, consider adding 1 to 2 lbs/day of a 25+% protein supplement with a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals. Once they are on full winter hay or hay and concentrate rations, you can probably drop the protein but will need to add vitamins to their mineral supplementation. Making these simple adjustments when pastures begin to fail at the end of the summer season can forestall familiar seasonal issues, and help your horse make a smooth transition to fall and winter.

simply a direction, not a connection with the hands. Horses cannot go faster forward into collection nor can riders gather a horse's forward energy into collection by pulling on the reins. Connection starts with that powerful thrust from the hindquarters that moves through the horse's body in a way that allows the rider's hands to gather and direct the energy. Also adding to students' chat room confusion, different riding systems describe different methods for applying leg— bump, tap, squeeze, flutter, pulse, use heavy leg, use light leg, lay leg against the horse's side, keep the legs away from the horses' sides, drive every stride, drive and leave the horse alone, and the list goes on. “How DO I use my leg?” lamented one chat participant. There is, unfortunately, no simple formula that I or any other instructor can offer that fits every situation. How the rider applies leg or other 'forward' aids depends on multiple factors. Here I will discuss two of those factors:

USING LEG: A CONFUSION OF TERMS By Nancy Wesolek-Sterrett, Dressage Dept. Head, Meredith Manor International Equestrian Centre An online chat about an article that discussed how to get the horse 'in front of the leg' caught my attention recently. The students argued whether the writer was right or wrong. When I read the article, I realized that their disagreement arose, in part, because of the bewildering use of terminology in the horse industry. People use different terms to mean the same thing. Or they use the same term but with different shades of meaning. As an example, let's take a look at hoW the meanings of 'forward' and 'in front of the leg' might get tangled. The first thing a baby green horse learns about leg pressure is that if he moves forward when he feels pressure from both legs simultaneously, the rider releases the pressure and it goes away. That pressure may be described as a squeeze or a bump or a tap but they all mean 'the lightest possible pressure the horse will understand.' The release of that pressure is the horse's reward. We are only looking for a directional response, not for a particular speed or a particular shape the horse takes with his body. Trainers call this basic understanding of leg 'forward' or 'moving off the leg' or 'forward off the leg' or 'respect for the leg' or similar terms. As the horse progresses from this very basic, baby green response to higher levels of training, the rider adds layers of sophisticated nuance until the horse understands the individual meaning of a wide range of leg pressures. But at every level of training, the basic response we expect when the rider applies pressure with both legs simultaneously is that the horse moves 'forward' immediately. 'Going forward from the leg' is a precursor to having a horse 'in front of your leg. I feel this term confused the students in the chat

room because it did not precisely describe the response from the horse that the writer intended. When talking about a horse being in front of the leg, I prefer to describe the rider's feeling that the horse 'moves forward into the hands' or 'moves forward into a connection' with the rider's hands. The rider closes the leg and the horse responds by pushing off from behind, lifting the back, rounding the neck and connecting to the rider's hand, thereby completing the circle of aids Moving 'forward into connection' is a much more sophisticated forward response not to just leg but to a combination of legs, seat and hands than the green horse's simple 'respect for the leg.' When I close my legs on a more advanced horse, I want him to do more than just go forward quickly. I want him to step well under himself and push off the ground energetically with his hindquarters, taking a particular shape with his body that transmits that energy into my hands holding the reins. In the beginning stages, the combination of legs, seat, and hands feels like a mixed message to the horse. I am saying GO with my legs and HOLD YOUR FORWARD ENERGY A BIT with my seat. My goal is that when he feels this apparent contradiction, he will step farther under himself than he would have from leg pressure alone, contract his abdominal muscles to lift his back and withers, and allow an energetic connection with his driving hindquarters to flow up into my hands holding the reins. Some riders try to ride their horses faster into 'connection'. Adding more leg pressure without modifying it with seat and rein aids only asks the horse go forward faster. Forward is

• HORSE'S TRAINING LEVEL – In our training classes, students learn to first SHOW a horse what they want him to do. At the next stage, they can ASK for what they want. When the horse consistently gives what they ask, they can then TELL him what they want and expect a response. If the horse does not respond, only then is it fair to ENFORCE their request. The rider enforces forward movement with only as much pressure as needed to get a response. That might be increasing levels of leg pressure, a kick, or a touch of the whip added to leg pressure. Spurs, by the way, are not on the list of aids for forward movement. They are used to encourage hindquarter engage-ment (the first step in collection). The rider starts with the least amount of leg pressure and increases the pressure until the horse moves forward. The rider pays attention to the horse's

response to the aid and changes the aid based on the horse's feedback. The next ride, the rider does not start with a tap of whip pressure because that was what it took to get a forward response the last time. Then that would become the pressure that the horse understands as 'forward.' The goal is to help the horse respond respectfully to the least amount of leg pressure. • HORSE'S TEMPERAMENT – Leg pressure must have meaning to the horse. It must be part of the vocabulary used by both horse and rider to communicate. The hot horse that needs no leg to move off as soon as the reins are released must learn to allow the rider to apply leg pressure. When a horse runs from leg pressure, he may be going forward but the rider cannot get that energetic connection from back to front. As training progresses, however, hugging lightly with the legs creates a corridor that helps this type of horse relax and trust the legs. At the other end of the spectrum is the placid horse that ignores a leg constantly bumping or gripping his sides. This horse is more likely to pay attention to a fluttering leg or a bumping leg against his sides. The horse would ignore a constant leg pressure and start going slower and slower. When terminology confuses riders they should ask their trainer or riding instructor to explain how they are using a particular word or phrase. Good instructors know how to explain the same thing different ways to suit the learning styles of individual students. If riders come across the use of a term in an article or book that seems to contradict their own understanding of the term, they should search for the author's definition or try to tweeze the meaning out of context. Different riding disciplines and different schools of training within individual disciplines often use the same or similar terms with different meanings. Don't let it throw you. Just keep learning. This picture was taken at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Belleville, MI. While this little gelding is the first horse that Hannah Price (18 years old) has owned, she has been riding and showing horses since she was just 7 years old. Remington (approximately 8 years old) came to Hannah through her sister, who had been given the horse in lieu of him going to auction. He was just a little scrawny thing at the time, but with lots of love, groceries and exercise he has become a great all-around horse for both 4-H and equestrian team, in only 3 years! Hannah rides both English and Western, dabbles in Showmanship and lives for speed events!
