SPORTHORSE EXPANSION! Local equestrian retailer comes out of recession thriving! New Hudson, MI: Sporthorse Saddlery Inc. has expanded their store size by 33%, and now offers Michigan's equestrians an enhanced bricks-and-mortar retail experience in their 4,500 square foot store. The store specializes in the English riding styles of dressage, show hunters, jumpers, and three-day eventing, and offers a full line of clothing, equipment, and supplies. “We are thrilled to have come out of the last couple of tough years strong, and are so excited about the expansion,” said owner Nancy Bredeson. “I believe our success (and survival) are the result of two things… we have a wonderful, always growing group of loyal customers, and our employees know their stuff, and are really committed to customer service.” With the expanded space, Sporthorse Saddlery can offer a larger selection of equestrian and lifestyle footwear and clothing, which draws customers into the store more frequently. Many other local equestrian retailers have closed in the recent years, due to the tough economy and the shift in consumer buying to the internet. “We have to offer a large inventory with good variety and competitive prices to make it worth the customer's time to visit our store, and then offer them knowledgeable service and a fun experience once they arrive. soundness of the cooperative, as well as the value GreenStone has for its customers, and the organization's flexibility and understanding of agricultural businesses. The survey also showed that 93 percent of those surveyed would return to GreenStone for their future lending needs. “GreenStone's customer satisfaction rate of 94 to 97 percent satisfied during the last five years is simply off the charts,” said Dr. Robert Myers, Project Director, from Advantage Research and Analysis. “Typical customer satisfaction rates at other financial institutions are in the 65 to 85 percent range, with anything above 80 percent generally regarded as an excellent performance. GreenStone's consistent customer satisfaction rates in the mid 90 percent range are truly exceptional.” Contributing to the cooperative's overall satisfaction rate were the high marks received by GreenStone's 37 branch locations. Individual branch satisfaction rates reached as high as 100 percent. “Our branch offices are the face of GreenStone and the service that they offer to our members is critical to continuing to maintain high customer satisfaction ratings,” said Armstrong. “We are fortunate to have a workforce comprised of individuals who are passionate about agriculture, country living, and providing quality service to our customers.” The 97 percent satisfaction rating achieved by GreenStone surpassed the cooperatives previous best rating of 95 percent set in 2011. A random selection of members from GreenStone's traditional, country living, and commercial customer segment participated in the survey.
GREENSTONE SETS RECORD! GreenStone Farm Credit Services, the sixth largest lender in the Farm Credit System, has earned a record 97 percent customer satisfaction rating for the first time in the cooperative's more than 95-year history. Michigan-based Advantage Research and Analysis completed the independent GreenStone customer satisfaction survey. “Every GreenStone staff member makes customer service their number one priority, and I believe the results of this survey help validate that,” said GreenStone president and CEO, Dave Armstrong. “We put a tremendous amount of time and effort into getting to know each of our customers and providing them with lending and financial services options tailored to their individual needs. As a result, we have consistently experienced superior ratings since we began the customer satisfaction survey in 2000.” GreenStone customers from throughout Michigan and northeast Wisconsin participated in the survey. Customers indicated they were most satisfied with clerical staff performance and the financial

AAEP HELPS FUND PROGRAM Thanks to a generous donation from the American Association of Equine Practitioners Foundation (AAEP), The Unwanted Horse Coalition (UHC) is able to continue its Operation Gelding program. The Operation Gelding program provides funds and materials to assist organizations, associations and events that wish to sponsor clinics to which horse owners can bring their stallions to be castrated. Since the program was initiated in September 2010, Operation Gelding has assisted in gelding 489 stallions and has provided $24,450 in grant money to organizations that have hosted Operation Gelding castration clinics. "The UHC is pleased to announce that the AAEP Foundation will be donating $15,000 to the Operation Gelding program to help continue this important effort and aid in the castration of 300 additional stallions. With this charitable donation, the AAEP is dedicated to making a positive impact on unwanted horses and the entire equine industry,” said Dr. Douglas Corey, Chairman of the UHC. The UHC will provide information and forms necessary to conduct a clinic, along with seed money to defray the costs. Funds of $50 per horse gelded with a $1,000 maximum will be awarded to groups once a year. Assistance will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis, subject to available resources. Organizations can apply by filling out the Operation Gelding Funding Form provided by the UHC. Funds will be awarded once the clinic is complete and a veterinary WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

FEEDING HAY IN A DROUGHT Purchasing forage for horses in a drought year, by Christine Skelly, of the MSU Extension. This year Michigan and Ohio are experiencing the same drought as many of our neighboring Midwest states. While most of our states are not in the critical zone, the high heat and low moisture are negatively affecting our crops and pastures in many parts of the states. Meaning farmers and horse owners alike are feeding hay to livestock in mid-summer that we wouldn't usually have to feed
until mid-fall. On top of that, hay production will be lower this year in most areas. Many dairy and cattle farms that usually sell hay will be keeping it to feed their own stock. Loss of corn and other crops will also drive grain prices higher. Waiting until you actually need hay will be risky as hay availability continues to decrease and feed prices rise. Consider feeding round bales this winter: There may be more round bales of hay (800 – 1,200 pounds) available for purchase than small square hay bales (40 – 80 pounds) as we approach the winter months. Usually, hay prices are lower if you purchase hay by the ton than by the number of small square bales, especially if the bales are light weight. Four to seven horses can consume a round bale in seven to ten days. Newly designed round bale feeders for horses have been shown to decrease hay loss while ensuring fresh hay is offered, even in inclement weather. Research indicates that a good round bale feeder can pay for itself in two years, due to decreased hay wastage. Large bales need to be stored indoors, unless they are well wrapped. Due to their size, a tractor or a skid loader is required to move round bales. For more information on feeding round bales, visit http://www1.extension.umn.ed u/agriculture/horse/nutrition/sel ecting-a-round-bale-feeder/ Develop strategies to stretch hay supplies using forage substitutes: Consider stretching your forage supply now to ensure you can feed some long stemmed forage through the winter months. Horses need to eat between 1.5 - 3 percent of their body weight in feed (based on dry matter intake) to meet their individual requirements. Of that total intake, horses should receive at least one percent of their body weight in forage. For

many horses, optimizing the forage portion of their diet to 1.5 – 2 percent of their body weight, while minimizing their grain intake is the healthiest way to feed. That means the average 1,000 pound horse will eat around 15 - 20 pounds of hay per day, or one small bale of hay every two to three days, assuming small bales range in weight from 40 – 60 pounds. This can be an expensive endeavor if there is a shortage in hay. Ideally, fiber particles from forage should be at least two inches in length to help stimulate the intestinal lining of a horse's gut. When stretching your forage, consider supplementing your long stem hay with other high fiber feeds like hay cubes, hay pellets, and beet pulp. Complete feeds as well as senior feeds are formulated to supply all of the horse's daily fiber needs. However, horses will still have the psychological urge to chew. By offering long stem forage like hay along with other fiber sources, you can keep your horses happier over the long winter months. Consider feeding different types of hay: If you have always fed second cutting grass hay, this may be the year you need to try something new. Hay, whether cut earlier or later in the season, is dependent on maturity at harvest and species to determine its overall nutritional value. As hay matures in the field, it will decrease in both energy and protein, regardless if it is first, second or third cutting. Birdsfoot trefoil, a legume primarily harvested in the Upper Peninsula, is the exception to this and keeps its quality for a longer period compared to grass or alfalfa when mature. Legumes in general will be higher in energy and protein that grasses. Legume plants are more drought resistant than cool season grasses, and it may be (29)
that you will get more quality nutrition with a mixed hay (grass and alfalfa) or even alfalfa hay this year. You should always feed grain based on the type of hay you are feeding. So if you are feeding hay with more energy and protein than you usually feed, you will probably need to decrease the amount of grain you are feeding – otherwise you may end up with an overweight horse. By the same token, if you are feeding more mature hay than you have in the past, you may need to increase your horse's grain ration to ensure your horse gets adequate energy in its diet. You can also feed hay that is over a year old as long as it is clean and dry. All hay loses vitamin stores relatively quickly (in about three to six months of storage). We always assume that we need to supplement essential vitamins and some minerals based on where hay is grown and the species type. Supplementing hay with a hay balancer or formulated grain that is specific for your horse's dietary requirements can ensure your horse is getting a balanced diet. Remember to body condition score your horse often to ensure they are neither too fat nor thin. Finally, avoid feeding moldy or dusty hay. Moldy hay can cause colic in horses while dusty hay can lead to respiratory problems. Older horses are particularly susceptible to heaves, a respiratory condition that can be aggravated by dusty, moldy hay. BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS As this is being written, we're experiencing a welcome break in the weather. We've had temperature drops and rain drops, and everybody's a lot happier. What this means, of course, is that riding will be a lot more pleasant, and many of us are taking advantage of these opportunities. The staging area, horseman's camp and trails at the Brighton Recreation Area have benefitted from this moderation in what has been an extremely hot and dry summer. Grass that had become yellow and crunchy is now greening up. Trails that had been dusty are now much more welcoming to both horses and riders. We hope this pleasant weather holds, although we realize that there's still a fair amount of summer ahead of us. We did luck out on the weather on July 14th. That was the day we held our BTRA Annual Picnic and Open Ride. Although we had our concerns over what Mother Nature had in store for us, it was a very pleasant day. Yes, the temperature was well into the 80's but it was quite tolerable. Of course, there was no rain but overhead we had blue sky and fluffy white cumulus clouds. And on that day, the trails were great; not too hot and not too dusty. Of course, most of the trails at Brighton run under canopies of trees, so riders are mostly in the shade. We had a good turnout and most everyone rode before the meal. All the riders reported that their rides were enjoyable. When it was time to eat, we sat down to some great chow. BTRA supplied the sandwich fixins' and beverages, and the guests brought side dishes and desserts. We had our choice of
seating and some of us stayed under our new shelter and others sat at picnic tables under some shade trees. All in all, we were very pleased that this event turned out so well. Now we're looking forward to some upcoming fall activities. We host open rides that extend into November and we have a big event coming up in October. We're still in the planning stages for that one but we'll be ready to tell everyone about it in next month's article. Mark Delaney, BTRA Sec.

EQUINE LADIES Our July meeting was held at the home of Candy and Dale Young in Dowagiac, Michigan. Farrier Greg Wilson from Three Rivers talked about corrective trimming/shoeing, arthritis, hoof problems, conformation, etc. He told us that there are times when he has Lori Haan work on a problem horse in conjunction with his trimming and shoeing. Lori Haan, Equine Skeletal Balancer, from Dorr, talked and demonstrated equine massage, skeletal balancing and saddle fitting. She showed us a series of daily stretching exercises to do with our horses that are very beneficial for the horse. Candy provided delicious original Chicago-style Italian Beef sandwiches along with a salad and a desert potluck. Our September meeting will be held at the beautiful new facility, Concord Ridge Stable in St. Joseph, Michigan. There will be a driving demonstration and carriage rides with their Friesians, and discussions on harness fitting and driving training. Horse Association & Club News MiCMO, Continued After the potluck there was a scavenger hunt and of course it was a race to collect all the items. Creativity was rewarded generously and the winners received a gas gift card. What a wonderful way to end the day! The last two CMOs are only two weeks apart on September 22nd and 23rd, then again on October 6th and 7th. My team is excited to ride in Brighton and Waterloo respectively because both locations will be new to us. We are hoping for beautiful fall weather again this year. The camping experience has been so much fun but each time we do it we think of one more thing to make the trip easier. This next weekend I can't wait to use the first stall in my trailer for storage because now I have a stud wall. Always being economically minded, I searched online for the best way to put in a stud wall without breaking the bank. I decided on using two three foot by four foot rubber mats and hang them from the bottom of the existing divider. Where the two mats meet they are connected with really heavy zip ties. The mats are heavy enough to keep items from rolling or sliding into the second stall and soft enough to keep my horse from hurting himself. Even after paying someone to hang the mats, which I realize later I probably could have done myself, I still spent under $150. Along with my $15 Rubbermaid cart (off Craigslist), new step ladder, and my new pulley system this weekend should be easy and free of worry. Yeah, right, I will think of something to worry about! If you have joined us for a ride I hope you enjoyed yourself. We have seen many new faces this year. As my brother once told me, try everything twice unless
it is illegal or fattening. We would love to see more people try the CMO so if you haven't had a chance there is still time during the best season of riding. If you need help at your first ride that can be arranged, just contact the ride manager for more information. The complete schedule of rides and locations are listed on our website, www.micmo.org. Enjoy the last days of summer, and I hope to see you on the trails!

About progress with Westy We have not really advanced much in terms of Level or maneuvers because we are focusing on the key problems. One could ask, “Why not work on the other Savvys?” Mainly because these are already at or close to Level 3, and it's the relationship that is at risk. I'm putting the relationship first and getting to the root of the trouble before trying to do anything advanced or fancy with him. I know that will come easily once I've taken the time it takes. Every day I play with Westy I see the size of the problems diminishing and the distance between the two circles, PROBLEMS and PROGRESS, getting smaller. So I am making progress in terms of reducing the problems, and I'm looking forward to making progress when we can start to really dance together in complete trust and harmony. Finally, the distance between the PROBLEMS and PROGRESS is what helps keep you on track and motivated, because you now know that as problems diminish, real progress can be
Parelli Natural Horsemanship
Problems vs. Progress Part II By Linda Parelli www.ParelliConnect.com
The following is a continuation from August 2012. Linda Parelli is discussing assessments of Westy, her Hanoverian gelding, a “Left-Brain Extrovert on the cusp of Right-Brain Extrovert.” Emotional— Scared of pressure Westy is afraid of pressure. Actually, he is afraid of being afraid. Pressure made him afraid, and when he got frightened he was pressured to keep performing. As a graduate of the Parelli program, I know how to use retreat and re-approach to help build a horse's confidence, to not push him over thresholds, and I can use my understanding of Westy's Horsenality™. (What I love about being a student of Horsenality™ is that you get to feel as if you are psychic! You understand the essential needs and best practices way ahead of time; you can be prepared.) Being a Left-Brain Extrovert, stopping, backing up and waiting does not make things better. You have to be more provocative at the same time, so I honor his worry and allow him to stop for a moment. Then I back him up and trot him toward the threshold. This may take two or three repetitions, but as we proceed it takes fewer, and his confidence in me as his leader grows significantly because he knows I “get” him. Physical—Unlevel hips and “shivers” in his right hind Having learned about Healthy Stride and the value of a physically balanced horse through Remmer's problems some years ago, I knew that Jim
Crew was the man to help address Westy's physical issues. Being all about postural balance and limb alignment, this is way more than trimming or shoeing. I knew he would be able to resolve the physical issues, and I relied greatly on his expertise when it came to assessing Westy's physical health, his future capacity and his athletic longevity. Being only nine, but with significant physical imbalances in his hind end, he was likely to have serious issues show up around the age of 11 or 12, so I wanted to make sure that my next super horse was not going to be compromised a couple of years down the track. After the first session with Jim, the change in Westy's ability to use his hind legs more equally was astonishing. The shivers also disappeared; but when he felt stressed, instead of violently shaking his leg, he would suddenly pick it up and then put it down again, almost as if it was a memory of something he used to do but no longer really needed to. Here's something you might find interesting that Jim points out when there are physical issues: “Steering problems— front end. Emotional problems— hind end.” When you have ongoing problems with crookedness, gaits, canter leads, even unexplained lamenesses, it pays to do a physical assessment of your horse to make sure that there is nothing out of alignment that is going to interfere with your horse's ability to deliver what you are asking for.

made. You just need to be clear on what it is you're working on. A Quick Guide to Solving Problems... • Tension Partial disengagement, consistency, circles, downward transitions, slow down and take the time your horse needs. • Fear Retreat, retreat, retreat and then reapproach. Remember, “It's not about the…” It's about your horse's faith and trust in you. • Distrust Slow down, retreat, wait (the next move is his), consistency, no surprises, feel for him and wait for him to feel for you—mentally, emotionally, physically. • Motivation Ask less, wait more, be more mentally intense (vs. physically animated), make it a game, straight lines, big rewards for tiny efforts, have a sense of humor, do something new or unexpected (unpredictable!).
Westy
Do you know your horse’s personality?
(38)
Left-Brain Introvert Loss of motivation, dullness, slow to respond, won't go forward, tail swishing, shuts down, robotic
Right-Brain Introvert Tension, hesitance, distrust, spookiness, inconsistency, worry, ears back, hesitant to move, tendency to explode
Left-Brain Extrovert Loss of willingness, confrontational, braciness, crookedness, disrespect, headstrong, tantrums
Right-Brain Extrovert Fear and safety issues, anxiety, tension, braciness, high-headedness, herdbound, impulsive, and frantic WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM
• Willingness Be more interesting, provocative, active. Encourage the horse's ideas, do something new or unexpected, have a sense of humor. Refer also to information about Horsenality™ at parelli.com. This will give you more insight on how to think of training as a cycle in which you need your horse to be calm, trusting, motivated and willing: how to know when you have it and what to do when you lose it. Quick Guide: How the Parelli Program Helps You Solve Problems and Make Progress, Level by Level As you can see, Levels 1 and 2 are more about solving problems than advancing. They pave the way for making a lot of progress in Levels 3 and 4 by first “cleaning the slate.” Parelli Levels & Outcomes: • Level 1: Solve fundamental
communication and behavioral problems Outcome: Solve control problems; establish a common language with the Seven Games on the ground. Learn to use basic Parelli Patterns to exercise your horse mentally, emotionally and physically. Begin the journey of understanding and using equine psychology.
(without using the reins for control) at walk, trot, canter, stops and transitions. Learn more complex and psychologically powerful Patterns. • Level 4: Make progress in Four Savvys, learn to ride with contact, fundamentals of performance (English & Western) Outcome: Level 4 advances you on the ground and riding and adds Finesse, which uses precision and riding with contact. When you have contact with the most sensitive part of your horse— his mouth—you start to realize the enormity of trust it takes for your horse to be on the other end of that feeling and the amount of feel, timing, balance and savvy that it takes to be able to communicate with your horse this intimately. At Level 4 the Four Savvys of your foundation are complete (On Line, Liberty, FreeStyle & Finesse)
• Level 2: Solve and prevent riding problems Outcome: Learn to prepare, saddle, mount, direct and control your horse at walk and trot. Stay safe both in and out of the arena; know when to get on and when to get off; learn fundamental patterns that give you focus when riding. • Level 3: Make progress, learn to ride bridleless, do Liberty. Outcome: Advance your horsemanship skills both on the ground (longer lines) and at Liberty, and riding—FreeStyle
• Level 5: Specialize: English, Western, Driving, Liberty, Performance, Competition, etc. Outcome: Now that you have a foundation, you can build on it. It doesn't matter what you want to do or how far you want to progress; you can do it—from pursuing horsemanship as an art to specializing in horse training, teaching, or succeeding in competition. You will take with you a deep understanding of how to use love, language and leadership in everything you do, totally respecting the horse and using communication, psychology and understanding to achieve your ultimate result.
