and his eye will be soft. If your horse's mouth is constantly moving or his neck is tense or he tosses his head, you may not have him in the correct bit. Even the correct bit will not be comfortable if is it is not adjusted properly. Make sure that the bit you are using fits your horse's mouth and is adjusted properly in his mouth. It should not sit too low in the mouth, and there should one wrinkle in the corners of his mouth, just above the bit. If you ride in a curb bit, use a plain leather curb strap with buckles on both sides for ease of adjustment. A properly-fitted curb strap will create just the right leverage to work on the bars of your horse's lower jaw. If the strap is too tight, it places constant tension on the bit. If it is too loose, the bit loses leverage. Make sure you can slip two fingers under the strap and slide them along your horse's chin. Remember that any bit, even if it fits well and is adjusted properly, can be abusive depending on the rider's hands. Because riders tend

• PALM PARTNERSHIP TRAINING™ • Building a Partnership with Your Horse

ON-TRAIL TRAINING, Part II By Lynn Palm www.LynnPalm.com • 1-800-503-2824 Staying safe is your highest priority whenever you're riding. Before you hit the trail, it's wise to do a quick, but thorough, check of all your tack and equipment. Bridle: Either a leather or nylon bridle, with the headstall secured with a brow band and throatlatch, is suitable for trail riding. I recommend adding a cavesson (noseband) when riding English and using a snaffle bit. The cavesson will keep your horse from opening his mouth and, therefore, provide you with more control. (If your horse can open his mouth, he can evade bit pressure because a snaffle works off the sides of his mouth.) A combination halter/bridle is good for the trail. I usually put a well-fitting nylon halter on underneath the horse's headstall, especially on young or “hot” horses. A young or “hot” horse may have additional “inner energy” that needs to be released while on the trail. If that is the case, you can stop on the trail in an open area, attach a longe line that you have brought, and longe him until he has released his excess energy. (In my book, Training Outside the Box, I covered in detail how to release your horse's inner energy.) If you do put a nylon halter underneath the headstall, make sure the halter is fitted high enough (one inch under each cheekbone) to prevent the bit from pinching. The halter also is convenient if you want to tie your horse when you stop on the trail. Take along a heavy duty lead line. Reins: On the trail, I like to ride with 5/8-inch wide split-leather reins made from bridle leather. I prefer these reins because they are a good fit for a woman's hands, but rein choice is a personal preference. Round reins are my second choice, but I always prefer leather over nylon. Nylon is slick, while leather gives the rider a better grip and contact. However, in rainy weather, leather also can

become slippery, so then nylon would be the better choice. I carry an extra set of reins in my saddlebag in case the first set gets wet. If you ride English, braided reins offer a good grip. If you ride with a single rein, they should be long enough that when you pick them up there is a good 6 to 12 inches of “bite” (the part of the rein that hangs down). This extra length gives you adjustment options and allows you to maintain a loose rein or light contact when you only need relaxed control. Barrel racing and roping reins are too short for trail riding. Hardware: Use buckles or leather lacing, rather than snaps, to attach the reins to the bit. A sensitive or nervous horse may be stimulated even more by jiggling snaps. If you have to use snaps, make sure the weight of the snap is not heavier that the rein weight. If it is, it will move constantly and send vibrations to the bit, and you can imagine how annoying that can be to a horse. The vibrations also interfere with clear rein cues. If you are presently using snaps and your horse mouths the bit a lot or is nervous, replace the snaps with leather lacing and you might notice a big improvement. Bit: Ride in the least severe bit that still allows you to have control of your horse. Riders tend to use more bit then they need, especially on the trail where they fear loss of control. However, a more severe bit enhances the horse's sensitivity and response. On the trail, your horse is stimulated by the new surroundings and he will be more reactive to the bit. So, instead of getting more control with a more severe bit, you can actually have less control. Use the same bit on the trail that you use in the arena. If your horse performs well in a sidepull, bosal, or hackamore, they are good for trail riding too. If your horse is comfortable with the bit, his mouth, head and neck carriage, and neck muscles will be relaxed,

to be tenser on the trail, it is important to be conscious of the pressure you are putting on your horse's mouth and keep reminding yourself to relax your hands and wrists. If you ride in hilly terrain, a breastcollar will prevent your saddle from slipping back when going uphill. Look for a well-made, leather breastcollar, and properly adjust it to fit your horse. It should fit snugly—not too tight and never loose. It should rest above your horse's point of the shoulder. If it sits too low over the point of the shoulder, it will restrict his movement and cause him pain. The front center ring should rest right at the base of his neck. If it is any lower, the breastcollar is sitting too low.

Horse Association & Club News

BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS As this is being written, BTRA is just getting geared up for the New Year. Our first Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for later this month and we have a pretty full agenda. We'll put together our 2013 Events Schedule, which will include meetings, events, work bees, and organized rides. This schedule is included in our newsletter, The Hoofbeats Gazette, which will be published in February. That issue will also include a membership renewal form, since it's time for our members to send in their 2013 dues. We like to point out that BTRA membership dues have never been increased since our organization was founded in 1997. With everything else costing more year after year, how's that for a bargain? We're still getting compliments on our Christmas Party, which was reported on last month. In almost every way, our program in December represented an improvement on what we had done in the past. Nevertheless, we did retain some of our tried and true traditions. It illustrates that change can often bring about improvements, but we shouldn't leave behind the things we've been doing well. In addition to working on our 2013 schedule, our Board will also be talking about our upcoming BTRA Annual Meeting. This takes place in the winter and over the years it has undergone some changes. For several years we held it in conjunction with a square dance and potluck, and last year we held it in a local restaurant. We're probably “danced out” after our Christmas Party, but it never takes long for our appetites to return. So, we'll likely combine

our meeting with a restaurant meal this year. We elect Board members at that meeting and also start to sign up volunteers for our table at the Michigan Horse Council Expo in March. This is, of course, the biggest Michigan equestrian event of the year in terms of exhibitions, vendors, and attendance. BTRA has hosted a table at this show for over a decade and it offers us a prime opportunity to introduce ourselves to the trail riders from across the state. We see old friends, network with other organizations, and sign up new members. Next month, we'll be able to give readers more details on what BTRA has planned for 2013. Mark Delaney, BTRA Secretary

FORT CUSTER HORSE FRIENDS ASSOCIATION Happy 2013 to all trail riders. For those of you that might not be acquainted with the newly separated trails at the Fort Custer Recreation Area, we invite you to come ride with us. Our trails include 5 creek crossings with a variety of trail loops, some with beautiful lake vistas. The trails were separated in November of 2011 and a new trail system for horses was put in by the club with help and cooperation of the DNR. There is still an existing loop (the blue Trail) that is multi-use, being shared with the bikers, hikers, and horsemen. Our new trailhead staging area is open and easy in and out for big rigs. We are still in the process of finishing the perimeter of this parking area. Fund raising money in 2013 will go towards the completion of this project. Our Annual Campout/ Fundraiser is still the 3rd

weekend of Sept., 2013; dates are September 20, 21 and 22nd. We have permits to camp at the Whitford Lake event area for this date. This is a beautiful grassy area with pine trees for high lines. Corrals and electric pens are allowed and the club furnishes water and manure removal. Friday night supper, Saturday breakfast, Sat. potluck supper and Sunday breakfast are included in fees. Games on the trails and games in camp are expected for all to enjoy again this year. If you haven't made it to a campout, you are missing a great time! We will also be having a NEW Spring Campout. The date is TBA, pending park approval. This will be a "fun" campout with a potluck Saturday supper. If you wish to camp, explore trails and meet new friends, come participate at this Spring Campout. There will be a $35/rig/weekend fee; registration with payment due by April 1st would be necessary to cover permit fees for this event. Follow our website: http://fchfa.org for info. Go to our website for our 2013 Calendar of Events. We have regular work days many ride/potluck/meet a friend days scheduled. We look forward to seeing you out on the trails! KENSINGTON TRAIL RIDERS Kensington Trail Riders Association will again hold its Annual Banquet / Silent Auction at the Lazy J Ranch in Milford on Saturday, March 23. Square dancing is a must for everyone – young, old, and anyone in between. We will have a great caller that will get you and your friends up and on your feet. We are looking to support local businesses and the Michigan (30)

economy, so the Silent Auction will have some great, local things to bid on – some horse related, some not. So bring your non-horse friends as well. This year we will be offering a buffet dinner and a bring your own beverage option. Dessert will be provided by KTRA. This great time is not to be missed. If you have been to our Annual Banquets before, you know how much fun it can be. If you haven't been – come join in. We are working out final details with the caterer so we don't have a firm price yet but we expect the cost to be approximately $25 per person. That will include food, dancing, fun, laughter and some good natured bidding on your favorite items. A KTRA infoshare email will be coming to members shortly with the final details. We have limited capacity so please sign up early. If you are not on the KTRA infoshare, please contact Judy Seifried for reservations and further details by email at judseifried@gmail.com. See you at the Lazy J!

MICHIGAN COMPETITIVE MOUNTED ORIENTEERING It is so exciting to see our schedule for next summer coming together. We are working hard to finalize the many rides that will happen throughout the state. Be sure to watch the calendar in Saddle Up Magazine or visit our website at micmo.org for an updated calendar of events. We would love to see more new faces this year so feel free to join us at any of the rides and we will teach you how to treasure hunt on horseback. This year will be two firsts for me! After riding my faithful gelding for several years and learning how to camp together, I am WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Horse Association & Club News MiCMO, Continued ready to take my mare out on the trails. The reason this is exciting for me is that she was born on my farm and I have done all the training. Having a new horse out on the trail will take away that security I have with Gump, but it will also be rewarding. The other new event this summer will be giving my first CMO ride. I am frightened by the amount of time and energy this will take but I am excited to have the opportunity. All organizations take several volunteers to make them successful and if I am going to enjoy the rides then I should at least discover what it takes to put one on. The best quote that I have heard recently was that life begins at the edge of your comfort zone. Putting on this ride will definitely be at the edge of my comfort zone and I am sure it will be challenging but also fulfilling. The preparation begins months ahead with collecting prizes and thinking of a theme and clues. I am most looking forward to the time I will spend with my horses prior to the ride looking for the perfect places to hide plates and take readings. As I write this I am looking forward to a summer filled with riding, fun and friends. The time should go quickly as my friends and I get together for our annual saddle cleaning party, attend tack sales and expos and continue to add events to our summer calendars. Enjoy the winter months and before you know it spring will be here. Happy trails! ~ Janet

We will also put on a Chinese auction with the proceeds going towards a pavilion we would like to build in our staging area. We are accepting donations for our auction.
