Add a Serving of Caution to Tender Spring Grass By Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D. Spring is almost upon us in most of the country, so it’s time to revisit that critical topic: spring grazing. Transitioning a horse from hay to pasture must be handled with care; this point is nonnegotiable. For every horse, a gradual change from hay to grass is required to allow the digestive system to adapt, but for the insulin-resistant horse, grazing time and duration can make the difference between soundness and a disabling condition like laminitis. This time of year can be a test of patience for horse—and owner. The horse may be pawing at the gate to get to the first taste of tender spring grass, yet the owner must pay close attention to making the transition safe and healthful.

Reduce Risk of Infection When Traveling By Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D. For many horses, this is the season for traveling to horse shows and events. Considering periodic outbreaks of equine herpes virus (EHV-1) and other infectious diseases, it is critical that your horse be in top physical health before embarking to an unfamiliar area. The foundation of that health is a strong immune system. Added antioxidants and supportive nutrients can have a positive impact on your horse's ability to resist an infection. Boost supplementation of the following nutrients per day for at least two weeks before you leave and throughout the travels or event; wean your horse off of them for two weeks following your return: Vitamins E & C: 5 IUs of vitamin E and 5 mg of vitamin C per pound (0.45 kg) of body weight Selenium: 3 to 5 mg of selenium Vitamin A: 30 to 60 IUs per pound (.45 kg) of body weight Omega 3 fatty acids: 1/4 cup chia seeds or ½ cup ground flaxseeds per 400 lbs (180 kg) of body weight Protein: 14-16% of the diet, and of high quality protein by feeding a variety of protein sources Magnesium: 5,000 mg of magnesium per ©2016 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • APRIL 2016

As the leaves form from the first spring sprouts, the sugar and starch content increases, making it especially tempting. Regardless of the growth stage, quantities should be monitored because horses crave fresh grass and will eat volumes of it, making their overall non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) consumption dangerously high for horses who are overweight, cushingoid, or who have experienced pasture-related laminitis. Temperature and sunlight play a major role in the amount of NSC accumulation. To be safe, here are the rules: • When the night temperature is below 40 degrees F, the grass is too high in NSC. • Once it gets above 40 degrees F at night, the lowest NSC level is before sunrise. • The NSC level is highest in late afternoon, after a sunny day.

500 lbs (227 kg) of body weight B vitamins: Provide a potent B complex preparation. Be sure to check how much of these nutrients your horse may already be getting from commercial feeds and supplements, and calculate to add only enough to boost quantities as noted above. Remember that stress suppresses immune function. An empty stomach is incredibly stressful -- both mentally uncomfortable and physically painful. Protect your horse by allowing him to graze on hay (and pasture, if available) at all times, throughout the day and night. And never let him perform without some forage in his digestive tract. Attention to increased nutritional needs will go a long way toward keeping your horse healthy during the time away from his familiar surroundings and routine. Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D. is an independent equine nutritionist with a wide U.S. and international following. Her research-based approach optimizes equine health by aligning physiology and instincts with correct feeding and nutrition practices. Dr. Getty's comprehensive resource book, Feed Your Horse Like a Horse, is available at www.GettyEquineNutrition.com -- buy it there and have it inscribed by the author, or get it at Amazon (www.Amazon.com) or other online retail bookstores. The seven separate volumes in Dr. Getty's topic(26)

There is no exact “best time” to turn out your horses on pasture. Generally speaking in moderate climates, it’s safest before dawn, until approximately 10:00 am, and then again at night, starting at around 11:00 pm. Start slowly, offering hay when horses are not on fresh grass. Finally, test your pasture! Yes, testing is not only for hay. It will take the guesswork out of knowing which times are best.

centered “Spotlight on Equine Nutrition” series are available with special package pricing at her website, and also at Amazon in print and Kindle versions. Premier CTR Organization Offering Free Memberships For the first time in its 55-year history, the North American Trail Ride Conference is offering free 2016 memberships to people who have never been NATRC members. Executive Administrator, Laurie DiNatale, explains, “We are a distance competitive trail ride organization that values conditioned, sound, trail savvy horses that are a pleasure to ride. We value light and balanced riding and encourage the good care of horses over the distance and in camp. We want to share that with people.” Camaraderie, fun, beautiful scenery, exhilaration, pride in accomplishment, confidence, overcoming disappointments, stretching our abilities, and deepening partnerships with our horses, are offshoots of the experience of riding in NATRC sanctioned competitions. Says DiNatale, “There is nothing like miles to cement the bond between horse and rider!” As a non-profit educational and distance CTR (competitive trail ride) sanctioning organization, NATRC education takes on many forms. The most unique of these is the direct feedback to competitors of scores and comments on their veterinary and horsemanship scorecards, which each rider receives at the close of a ride competition. Other resources include clinics, a new competitor section on the website, mentoring new competitors, informative articles in regional and national newsletters, an introductory video, social media, and the soon to be published second edition of the “NATRC Rider's Manual, A Complete Guide to Competitive Trail Riding.” For more information on the free membership offer, go to www.natrc.org

Uckele Health & Nutrition’s Exceptional Sponsored Riders Finish a Year of Triumphs Uckele Health & Nutrition proudly sponsors individual equestrian athletes and their horses with supplement programs targeted to support energy, focus, power, speed and recovery. In the past year, many milestones were met by Uckele sponsored horses and riders. Having won over 100 Grand Prix in his lifetime, Show Jumper Wilhelm Genn has been at the top of his game in 2015, with his personal favorite victory being two back-toback $50,000 Grand Prix of Traverse City wins on two different horses, Bugatti and Welcome COR. "It's the best feeling to win two weeks in a row, especially with two different horses,” he said, “When you win on the same horse, people assume it’s just because it’s a good horse. When you win on

two different ones, it gives you a little more credibility." More recently Wilhelm secured another two back-to-back $25,000 Grand Prix wins at the Palm Beach International Equine Center, this time both on Bugatti, for the $25,000 Noble Outfitters ESP Year End Grand Prix, and the $25,000 Pony Up Horse Treats Holiday II Grand Prix, finishing that jump-off in 41.327 seconds. Tie-Down Roper Timber Moore had one of the best years of his career. Competing in 71 rodeos across the country, he had an incredible 13 Rodeo wins and 4 Roping wins. A three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier, he’s proudest of winning the Calgary Stampede, the highest-paying rodeo of the summer at $100,000. After finishing third in the semifinal round with a time of 7.7 seconds, he stepped up big when the title was at stake and finished first with an 8.1. Another 2015 highlight was having his horse “Colonel” recognized. “MFO Harvey” was voted the reserve champion PRCA/ AQHA Tie-Down Horse of the Year. Having a solid mount is key to any cowboy ’s success, and he was quick to credit his horse “Colonel,” an 11-year old sorrel gelding. “Colonel has been working really good this year. He had kind of been stiff this summer, but he started moving a lot more easily after I started him on Lubrigen. Without him, it wouldn’t be possible.” Dressage Rider Lauren Sprieser, USDF Gold, Silver & Bronze Medalist, qualified two horses for the 2015 USDF National Finals. She had an incredible ride on “Stratocaster” to place 3rd in the Intermediate I Finals on 69.871%, just .4 off the win. Lauren and Ellegria continued to improve at the Grand Prix Level, with a 68.333% in the Freestyle Finals, bringing down a packed house to place a close 4th. The most exciting part of Polocrosse Player Dori Johnson’s year was representing the United States at the Polocrosse World Cup. This prestigious event only takes place every 4 years, making it an enormous honor to be chosen for the team. Dori was the 2015 USA Ladies Captain and also a member of the US team that competed in the 2011 World Cup.

After the World Cup, Dori competed with her home club (Lone Star Polocrosse) in the Central Zone Regional Polocrosse Championships in Minnesota on her Australian Stock Horse, “Zenith.” The A Grade competition level was very tough, but luckily for Lone Star, they pulled out on top. Not only that, Dori and Zenith were named Best A grade #3 Player, which is the defense position. once you have released his inner energy through longeing (or some other form of forced exercise). You then will be in control and able to maintain safety. If you want more information on longeing, Part 5 of my Longevity Training Video Series provides you with detailed instruction on the art of longeing. I also recommend the DVDs in the Longevity Training series that cover “Working at Liberty” and “Ponying.” In addition, Dressage Principles, Parts 1 and 2, cover rider balance and rider aids, and they will help you to make sure that you are not creating frustration energy in your horse by using improper aids and by riding unbalanced. My final recommendation is Private Lesson Natural Balance, Bending Parts 1 and Parts 2. Keep in mind, the saying “there is safety in numbers” aptly applies to riding. Trail riding, or riding around a new show grounds, with a calm and “seasoned” horse and rider combination will give you and your horse confidence. Another way to give yourself more confidence is to check out the new environment in advance. Take a walk on the trail that you are going to ride so that you can scout out any problem spots beforehand. Always remember that you are in charge of your own safety first but also the safety of your horse. There is a fine line between limiting yourself because of fear and avoiding situations that you are unprepared for and only you (or a trained equine professional) can make that distinction. This material is adapted from a series of articles I did with writer Cynthia McFarland for Trail Rider Magazine. Many trail-training lessons can be found in my book, “Training Outside the Box.” Find this, along with other helpful training materials, by visiting www.lynnpalm.com, or call us toll free at 1-800-503-2824.

Building a Partnership with your Horse

STAYING IN CONTROL by Lynn Palm Riders frequently ask how to stay in control in new situations. In fact, the most common question I am asked at clinics and featured appearances relates to training and riding outside of the horse's normal environment. Riders are concerned about losing control and what to do if the horse is disobedient, bucks, or rears. These responses from the horse usually cause the rider to become fearful and apprehensive about getting hurt. The best way to avoid these problems before they arise is to exercise the horse before going into a new environment in order to release what I call the horse's “inner energy.” When a rider takes his or her horse into a new situation, the horse will almost always become overly sensitive and be higher strung in the new surroundings. Riders tend to expect that the horse will work and perform outside in the same way as he does at home. This is not the reality, especially for horses that have not been seasoned by going different places and traveling many miles. Any fit, healthy horse will have some level of inner energy that must be released before he can concentrate on the task at hand. The level of energy can vary in different horses, but it is always there in high strung or sensitive horses, and some lazy horses as well. When a horse has not released his inner energy, he will be thinking “fast.” Remember, you will be safe and able to teach a horse only if the horse is thinking “slow.” You can recognize when a horse is thinking “fast” if he is turning his head and moving his ears quickly and if his movements are fast. The horse's breathing is another important indicator, especially when riding outside. A horse will try to smell with big breaths if he is unsure or afraid. He will wring or switch his tail if he is irritated or frustrated. One of the best ways to help the horse release this inner energy is through what is called “forced exercise.” There are three types of forced exercise: (1) longeing, (2) liberty work, and (3) ponying. Of these three, the most important to master is longeing. Personally, I feel longeing is the most important form of forced exercise because you can use it anytime and anywhere. All you need is a good fitting halter, a cotton longe line, and a lunge whip. The longe whip should have a minimum length of three feet with a tassel that ends with a little “snapper.” There are a few rules to follow when longeing. If the horse is already bridled and needs to be longed, simply fit the halter over the bridle. Attach the longe line either over the nose (for more response) or under the chin. A longe line that ends in a chain will be more severe than a simple cotton line with a snap end. Before longeing with a bridle on, it is very important to secure the reins so that the horse cannot get them over his head, step on them, or get a leg between them. To do this, place the halter on over the bridle. Attach the longe line, with or without chain end, to the horse's halter either by threading it over the nose or under the chin. If you are riding in Western tack, bring the reins under the pommel and through the hole under the pommel, and tie them in a knot. Loop the knotted end over the saddle horn. Make sure that the reins are not so loose that the horse could put his nose down on the ground or get a leg through them. Be equally careful not to tie the reins too short as it will restrict the horse's head carriage. If you are riding in English tack, the easiest way to handle the issue of reins is simply to take them off. While longeing your horse, he will tell you if he has inner energy to release through the common signs of shaking his head like he is saying “no,” flicking his ears with tight or tense muscles in his neck and body, drastic loss of attention, and wanting to run, buck, kick up or kick at you. Your horse will be ready to focus on you and what you are asking of him ©2016 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • APRIL 2016

Horse Association & Club News BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION Have we seen the last of the snow? Has spring finally arrived? Those of us who love to ride our horses in the warmth and sun certainly hope so. By the time this article appears in Saddle Up, these hopes will have been realized (we hope). In fact, we're even predicting the appearance of trees greening out, instead of the drab brown and gray we've had to endure all winter. Things are livening up at Brighton. Some outdoor events are right around the corner, we have our first work bee of the season on the schedule, and we're taking a serious look at our trails. As we have reported before, we're anticipating some major projects involving trail improvements, not just trail maintenance. We're gong to be rehabilitating some sections of our trails and even re-routing some other sections. Once our trail survey work is completed, we expect these projects to get underway, and we're really excited about these new initiatives. Again, as mentioned before, a number of these projects will be undertaken in collaboration with the DNR. We recently published our newsletter, The Hoofbeats Gazette, and it includes the BTRA membership form and the yearly Schedule of Events. The membership form has been modified to reflect a change in our organization's policy. We have created a new category of membership designed to reach out to those who use and enjoy the equestrian trails but are not trail riders. We welcome many people to the trails who are hikers, dog walkers, birders, and folks who just want to stroll through a beautiful natural setting. We want to make them part of our organization as Associate Members and will be publicizing this opportunity through a variety of means. Dues will be nominal, they will be invited to participate in our trail maintenance activities, and they will even be welcome at our social events. We'll let readers know how this is working out. By the way, wheeled and motorized vehicles are not allowed on the equestrian trails at Brighton and we think that is in everyone's best interests. The other big news is that we now have a new, improved and fully operational website: www. brightontrailriders.net. BTRA member Amy Scharmen, the Chair of our Website and Facebook Committee, has headed up this project and she's done an outstanding job. The careful reader will note that this new website differs only from the old one in that it is a “.net” instead of a “.com.” Amy also oversees our Facebook operation which has become very

popular. Our members and anyone else interested in BTRA activities can now receive information through several sour-ces: the website, the newsletter, Facebook posts, and group email messages. Mark Delaney, BTRA President FORT CUSTER HORSE FRIENDS ASSOC. Hello Trail Riders! It was wonderful to visit with old and new friends at the MHC Horse Expo in March. We talked with many riders that have never been to our trails and hope all of you that took information home can come and participate in our 2016 events. It was surprising to hear so many people did not know about our trails or camp out events. The DNR will be publishing more equestrian information in 2017 on their websites, such as Pure Michigan and Michigan parks. Our state has so much to offer to trail enthusiasts. Please mark your calendar for our Spring Camp Out on May 12, 13, 14 and 15th. This is a 4 day event held at our Whitford Lake event area. As always, there will be water for horses, an outhouse, manure removal, and picket poles in the beautiful grassy area for camping. Electric pens and corrals are allowed. Pancake breakfast weekend mornings and a potluck supper on Saturday night will be provided. The Annual Fall Equestrian Camp Out will be on September 15, 16, 17 and 18th. In addition to it being the same as the Spring event, there will be a fundraising auction of donated items on Saturday evening. Bring anything you wish to donate and we will sell it! This is a fun and silly event that everyone enjoys! Go to our website for our calendar of events, including the ride/potluck dates at www. fchfa.org. For any other questions, call Nancy Simmonds at 269-967-3613. For registration for camp outs, call Toni Hess at 269-781-9688. Come and see all our new improvements and ride the 20+ miles of trail with numerous creek crossings. See you there! Toni Strong, FCHFA Secretary GREAT LAKES DISTANCE RIDING ASSOC. How do I know if my horse and I are ready for a distance ride? If you're new to distance riding and plan to attend a Novice/Intro ride and if you've been riding 8-10 mile trail rides and incorporating some trotting/walking intervals chances are that your horse is prepared to do a Novice ride. If you are planning on riding 25 miles either Competitive or Limited Distance in general you

©2016 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • APRIL 2016

(34)

should be riding at least 3 days a week at distances between 5 and 15 miles each ride. You should be trotting most of the training ride only walking when the footing or terrain requires a walk. A medium to slow trot is fine. Other things to work on at home are your horse's manners. The horse needs to be able to be examined by a Vet and not be a danger to the Vet or anyone else, be able to trot in hand in a circle in both directions as well as a straight line, and also behave safely on the trail with other riders and horses. This also should not be your horse's first camping trip! You should know what type of containment system your horse can be left in or on safely and comfortably throughout the night. Getting your horse used to camping prior to the event also helps them to relax and eat and drink properly which is of utmost importance. What equipment (saddle, bridle, etc.) will I need in order to do distance riding? One of the great things about riding distance is that riders use any and all types of equipment. While a lot of riders will eventually purchase a saddle made specifically for endurance riding, there is no reason to run out and buy a bunch of new equipment to start out. Stick with what is working for you and your horse for now. There are many endurance related products, including saddles, that you will see at the rides. Some of these items you will eventually want and some you won't. Websites such as www.endurance.net has a long list for endurance related saddle and tack vendors. There is only one equipment rule and that is that riders under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet. A helmet is strongly recommended and there are many options available. Some of the more commonly used helmets are the Tipperary and the Troxel brands. The 2016 GLDRA season starts with our Introduction to Distance Riding Clinic, April 9th in Chelsea, MI, check out our website or contact Mindy Nagy for more information, melindasmyers@gmail.com, 734-645-4278. After that, get ready to ride with us! The first ride of the season is the Brighton Competitive Trail Ride, April 23-24 offering 15, 25 and 35 mile CTRs, optional tutored ride on Saturday. May takes the riders to the gorgeous Hiawatha National Forest in the U.P. at the Grand Island Ride May 28-29 with distances of 50E, 25LD and 25C offered. The rest of the GLDRA season has rides all over Michigan, from Marquette to Milford, and even includes a multi-day ride on the historic Shore to Shore trail. So check us out today, www.gldrami.org, and get ready to experience the trails in a whole new way! WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Along with the dancing and food, there were raffles with cash and prizes. Congratulations to all our winners. MiCMO and NACMO awards for 2015 were handed out and our Michigan members should be proud. We are thrilled to have many members winning the national high point in their division. This is an awesome accomplishment and we have some great riders! Our fabulous mother and son team, The Little Buckaroos, were first in Michigan for the short course team and third in the nation. Great job for a first grader and his mom. Congratulations to our President Melissa Fox for securing the long course individual national high point leader. Dennis Hurley competed in the individual short course this year and also took national high point. The very talented Regan Wittredge took the title of national high point junior. To top it all off, the family team of Turn & Burn Babes took the national high point long course. This is something to be very proud of especially when your youngest member is only five years old! The ride weekends in Michigan are increasing in competitors which allows us to be contenders for the national titles. If there is a tie at the national level when the points from the top five rides are added up, then they use the number of competitors at each ride to break the tie. Keep it up Michigan, this is truly a great sport, more people are figuring that out! We would love to see you at the rides this year. Our calendar is full with eight weekends of treasure hunting in the woods. It will be a lengthy season with our first ride beginning on April 7th at DBarD Ranch in Chase, MI and our final ride of the season on November 12th and 13th at Kensington MetroPark in Milford, MI. In May, we will be traveling to Ortonville Recreation Area on the 14th and 15th to help support the wonderful trails there. After that we travel to Silver Creek County Park for Fun

and Games CMO on June 4th and 5th. Please keep track of our events on our Facebook page or in the Saddle Up! Calendar of Events. Happy trails! Janet MICHIGAN FOX TROTTER ASSOCIATION MFTA 3-19-16 meeting report: The March 20th meeting of the MI Fox Trotter Association held at the Italian Oven restaurant in Mt. Pleasant, MI was called to order by Pres. Kathy Kruch at 11:40 AM. Those also in attendance were VP Bob Howell, Treasurer Char Ostrom (and husband, George), Secretary Marilyn M, Director Chuck Fanslow, Joe Burrill, Karilynn Noppe, Matt Lillie, Harland and daughter Alora Fish. Director Lola Kuhn was unable to attend. After member introductions, the Secretary's report from 2-20-16 was reviewed with one correction noted. Chuck made the motion, which Bob seconded, to accept the report with the single correction. All voted in favor and the motion passed. The only new correspondence was the receipt for the brochures ordered from Uprint. We currently have 37 MFTA members, 21 of whom are MFTHBA members. Treasurer Char Ostrom reported that our association has a good balance in both accounts. The MFTHBA/MFTA/MTRA National Trail ride date has been set for Oct. 1-9. The ride will go from Goose Creek campground to Cadillac, MI. You must become a member of MI Trail Rider Association (www.mtra.org) to participate. Enroll in the MFTHBA Fox Trot America program to earn yourself a point toward yearend awards. Go to www.mfthba.com. We have reviewed and discussed the proposed MFTA bylaw changes at three meetings, so Char made the motion, which Chuck seconded, to adopt these changes. All voted in favor and the motion passed. The present bylaws will be updated to reflect these changes. No new info was available concerning the MHC lawsuit. Marilyn nominated Joe Burrill for the 2 year Director position and he accepted! Bob seconded the nomination. We all voted in favor of electing Joe. No information is available yet on the Novi expo. Our brochures, however, will be available in the MFTHBA booth at Equine Affaire in Columbus, Ohio April 7-10 thanks to member Megan McGarry who has volunteered to bring them with her. The 2015 SHTRA Volunteer of the Year award was given to Rosie Johnson. Rosie has been a trail riding member of SHTRA for several years and joined the Board of Directors in 2015. An avid equestrian, she is one of the founding members of the Polka Dot Drill Team. With her willing, friendly attitude she is always asking to help. When the bridge to the island was under construction last spring, she donated equipment and made that project possible. Rosie's advice, helping hands and service are greatly appreciated. She was presented with an embroidered pink jacket at the 2016 annual meeting. See Rosie’s pictures on our Facebook page. The rustic cabin that SHTRA helped create is rentable for 2016 equestrians. This cute, rustic insulated cabin can sleep 4 with bunk bed and couch, table, heat, porta-potty, picnic table, and 4 picket poles! It rents for $60.00 plus registration fee a night. WESTERN MI APPALOOSA REGIONAL We've been getting some decently warm weather lately and I'm sure getting the itch to start riding more and working youngsters. Now, I'm just hoping the mud will dry up a bit so I can actually get into the arena. Don't forget to mark these important dates on your calendar: the WMAR Red, White and Blue show at Mason will be June 4 & 5, 2016, the WMAR State Show at Centreville will be July 16 & 17, 2016 and the Sizzler Show that we cohost with MApHA will be August 6 & 7, 2016. For 2016, we will be offering both Ranch Horse Pleasure as well as Ranch Horse Trail at our WMAR sponsored shows. It was decided that at the June show in Mason, Open Stallion halter classes will be split into Jr. & Sr. with the Mare and Gelding age splits remaining as is. At the Centreville show, ALL open halter classes will be split Jr. & Sr.

If you're looking to make a little extra money while showing this summer, sign your favorite show mount up for the WMAR Incentive program. Prize money is given out at the banquet based on the number of points earned in your division throughout the show season. Forms can be found under the “Service Page” on the WMAR website. It appears that 2016 will be our last year with our fabulous show office team of Brad & Kyle (and, sometimes, Julie Dopp). The WMAR, as well as the MApHA have started the hunt for someone to run our show offices starting in 2017. Please, let us know if you'd be interested in running the show office or know of someone who is. 2017 will be our last year at Centreville due to a date conflict. If anyone has a suggestion for another show facility, please let a board member know. We usually need 100-120 stalls, an arena large enough to run our games classes in and the same date. I'm still waiting for information on any news and/or photos of your Appaloosas that you would like to share, I'd love to have you share them with us either on our Facebook page or by emailing them to me to include in the newsletter. There's got to be some new foals out there somewhere! Remember, to stay up-to-date on the latest happenings, be sure to check out the WMAR website at www.wmarapp.org or follow our Facebook page, WMAR. Michigan & Ohio’s Favorite Horse Magazine! WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

HOW TO INCREASE SUSPENSION by Douglas Puterbaugh When I was asked to write some words on improving suspension, I realized how difficult that is, because the ability to improve the horse's suspension belongs in the category of the riders that do everything else really well. It’s like talking about the improvised cadence at the end of a violin concerto. One must first flawlessly perform the concerto itself. When we talk about “improved suspension” we refer more to brilliance produced by the virtuosity of the rider. The word "improved" has nothing to do with "natural" suspension. It takes quite a lot of skill to develop the brilliance of suspension. The term suspension as I know it refers to the phase of the trot and the canter when all the legs are off the ground. "Improved" suspension has no real value in itself, but it is the beautiful result of correct training, as the horses grows taller in the collection, and grows longer and more brilliant in the extension. Improving the horse's suspension is possible, only if all the stages of the training scale are alive in the work, and really belongs in the sixth category of the training scale. The established training scale every-one is familiar with is set forth by the German Army Riding School in 1912 as: • Takt: (Rhythm and Tempo) • Losgelassenheit: (Relaxation and Suppleness) • Anlehnung: (Rein connection to the hand) • Schwung: (Impulsion) • Geraderichten: (Straightening and Flexion work) • Versammlung: (Collection) Robert Dover once said that suspension is the result of : "The collection being alive in the extension, and extension being alive in the collection." The adjustability is the hallmark of the well trained horse, not his ability to do the lateral movements. Energy To improve suspension the rider must be able to work his horses at their optimum energy level. This is why those rider's

horses are always in peak physical condition. Just as a dancer or skater cannot perform a difficult maneuver without being in shape, a horse cannot develop in DRESSAGE without maximum effort. An old German proverb... "He who is afraid of doing too much always does too little." The rider must have the ability to "wake" his horses up sufficiently, and to make proper use of the "driving aids"- or the rider's legs, and this "waking up" must clearly improve the Losgelassenheit, not that he comes into tension, and produce the all too common "hovering passage" that resembles the horse's natural passage that is produced only when the horse is excited or frightened. This sometimes tempts the less experienced rider to actually favor this passage and unwittingly encourage what the more experienced trainer would try to keep from cropping up. False, hovering suspension is not desirable, because it indicates a deficiency in either the horse's education or the ability of the rider, and clearly show that the first three parts of the training scale are missing. The Grand Prix passage is the pinnacle of the horse's maximum developed suspension and the correct progression towards this air is evident in the transitions into and out of passage more than the passage itself. In order to increase suspension in the horse, the rider must be in possession of these skills: #1) A BALANCED SEAT: The balanced seat will enable the rider to "sit the trot" and make use of the weight aids. The only way I know of to improve the seat are as follows: (A) Rigorous lessons on the lunge line, on a suitable (swinging) horse with an expert handling the horse. The trainer must have a thorough knowledge of lunging as the rider must place all of his trust in the hands of the trainer. I was fortunate enough to have Sonja Vracko for this work in my early part of my education in developing the seat which lasted nearly two years, and involved juggling a ball from one hand to the other in the walk, trot, and canter. I have yet to see this work done effectively since this time, and have seen many strange variations and attempts at it. A

good video to get is the Carl Mikolka " 30 days to a better seat." (B) Riding well trained horses after they are properly warmed up. #2) GAINING FEEL FOR THE HALF HALT: Gaining skill at half halts takes a long time and is most easily accomplished after the horse has been schooled to properly respond to these aids. The fastest way to learn the use of half halts is to get directly on the horse after the trainer has warmed it up. This doesn't have to be a upper-level horse, and I have seen more people make progress in this then what is more commonly the case which is to buy a schoolmaster and attempt to learn from that schoolmaster all of the movements. This often tempts the loan soldier to buy a schoolmaster and in their ambition and vanity forget that this horse really is a schoolmaster, he is a master of all of the evations whereas the horse that is properly ridden maybe second or third level can produce a lovely half halt in the hand of the rider. And the old schoolmaster that can carry his rider through all the lectures of the Grand Prix and still appear lifeless and dull in his way of going and produce no suspension whatsoever can fail in giving the rider the proper feel to the hand. These skills take as long as they take, and they depend entirely on the rider's drive to develop himself. And remember there are no shortcuts, as Beverly Sills once said: " There are no shortcuts to any place worth going." When the rider feels confident in his or her acquired skills, they can begin the following exercises: (A) To lengthen and shorten the gait. The gait should be lengthened to the same degree that it is shortened and vice versa, gradually stretching the horse's limit. The more advanced horses will be collection to extension, the lower level horses would mean working trot to lengthening the trot and back again. (B) Developing the near halts. The horse is asked for a transition from working trot to the walk, and at the moment before they start to walk the rider drives on again and in that moment the hind legs are driven a little more under and a few steps of suspension are produced. WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

(C) Making use of the Cavaletti poles. This is done best without the weight of the rider and the horse must go over the poles slowly. When they lift the leg the trainer makes sure that the horse doesn't just lift the leg in a racking like manner, running over the poles or getting tense. The best example of dressage developing is when the training scale is alive all throughout the work, and is the underlined theme that the whole dressage training is based on. It is when the rhythm is maintained throughout the work, as the horse grows taller in suspension, and longer in the extension, the rhythm stays the same, or nearly the same. That there is no change in the suppleness of the horse, meaning the facial expression stays contented and he stays relaxed mentally and in his muscles. The connection to the hand of the rider remains constant in and out of collection. The rider can always return to lively impulsion at any time throughout the work. The straightness is maintained as the horse grows dull and mechanical as the energy escapes to the side.

mechanical, and disobedient over time, having a deleterious effect on the horse's development. Thorough schooling in the lateral work will serve to improve the horse's suspension and brilliance, as the inevitable result of this work is increased engagement and optimum articulement of the joints. If the horse does not produce more impulsive extensions after these lessons, the lateral work was at best a waste of time.

This defines the perfect dressage session, and we must make allowances for the developing horse to make deviations, as with any performing artist, before it sounded like the sibelius violin concerto it sounded like a lot of other things. Do not be discouraged, because there are no born masters. I hope these exercises proof profitable in your work. Remember that the "improved suspension" we talk about is really more brilliance of the work, and before we push the limits of the horse's artistry, we must first see a horse calmly producing the work, then a horse moving in brilliance with too much severity of tension. For the advanced riders, I deliberately omitted the lessons in the lateral work which greatly improve the horse's suspension and brilliance. The advanced riders know well that the lateral work will not serve to improve the horse gymnastically at all if the rider is not skilled at executing them properly, as all lateral work, especially canter half pass invites an inherent evation that goes unnoticed by the rider, and makes them even more dull,

Maybury State Park Improvements by Trevor McGinn, February 14, 2016 It seems like yesterday I was typing the first newsletter talking about what we had accomplished and the direction we are heading, time does move fast. It's now the beginning of 2016 and we had a great year of equestrian improvements. There certainly was much work to do with the $30,000 grant that we received to improve equestrian facilities. We maximized the money through the efforts of park staff and Maybury Trail Riders. Starting in May, we began the process of clearing and leveling the new staging area. The new staging area itself is approximately 2 ½ times the size of the old area that was shared with non-horse vehicles. In June and July we installed drain tiles, crushed concrete, and crushed limestone. The staging area is between 8” and 16” of this base and with the addition of the drain tile it should stay dry in the spring.

Between some of the staging area projects we were approached by the Friends of Maybury wanting to do a trail improvement in regards to drainage. Much like the year before, the Friends wanted to help with repairing some of the old culverts. All together we replaced three culverts, the Friends of Maybury generously donated, along with a great work day. With the

addition of these new culverts, the drainage in these areas should be good for years to come. Since they are longer than the old culverts, the trail will not erode as badly. With the new crushed limestone we acquired through the grant, we will be widening the trail slightly in those areas. In September a small shelter was added in the staging area for equestrian events. The shelter itself was placed over the top of the drain tile clean-outs to protect them from equipment driving through the lot. In the event that the tiles need a clean out, we are able to do that. The clearing directly behind the shelter is where the tiles run, so please do not ride your horses in that area as it could damage the PVC line.

The final thing we worked on this year was the new universally accessible loading block. This was a joint effort between the Maybury Trail Riders and the Park Staff. This loading block is ADA accessible and is located on the trail between the staging area and the Riding Stables. It will require some adjustment with the height next year and possibly a small fence section to corral the horse. Moving forward into next year, we have more projects from the grant to kick off. We have a significant amount of crushed limestone and filter cloth to use on roughly a ½ mile and mile of trail, particularly the first part of the trail heading west out of the staging area. This section of trail is very heavily used by the Riding Stables and needed some improvements.

Other projects for next year include: new mounting blocks, hitching posts, and fire pit/grill combo. The mounting blocks will be placed at each rest area along the trail. The new hitching posts will be added in the staging area. The fire pit will be placed by the new shelter in the staging area. This should make some of the events go better as it will have a cook top that can be flipped over the fire pit, or simply moved back to allow for a nice fire. This project was recently accepted by a life scout for his eagle project. His project will include building and placing loading blocks for each equestrian rest area, building and installing new hitching posts in the new staging area, and fundraising to get a fire pit/grill combination to be placed at the new shelter. His goal is to have this project completed in early summer. As we move into winter it’s important for us to look at what was accomplished in the past year and realize the impact we have made. We are all very happy with the progress and look forward to another year of improvements. To all the volunteers that helped this year, thank you. Your continued support is vital to the long term success of Maybury State Park. We look forward to a great year! Trevor McGinn, Lead Worker Maybury State Park, located in Northville, MI, features 11 plus miles of beautiful trails just for the equine enthusiast!

SEWING YOUR OWN RAIL SHIRT by Pegg Johnson For the purpose of this article, we will define a rail or pleasure shirt as a Lycra or spandex shirt with a zip front and fold over style collar. The shirt can have appliques and rhinestones on it. Because styles change so quickly, the French style cuffs that were popular for several years have gone out of style, and we will not discuss them in this article. Every pattern is contained in an envelope. which contains the information you need as to sizing, fabric yardage, supplies (zippers, thread, interfacing, etc.) that you will need to complete your garment. Locate this information and use it to select your supplies for your project. In general, the supplies needed will be: Yardage of Lycra or stretch fabric for the shirt, interfacing, contrasting fabric for collar (optional), separating zipper of proper length (measure from base of neck to where you want zipper to stop). If you cannot find a zipper the correct length, purchase one that is longer (see pattern envelope for proper type of zipper to purchase). I am going to assume that this pattern is one of the ones that is currently popular. It does not have princess seaming. There are only 6 pieces to the entire shirt – front, front facing, back, sleeve, collar, and French cuffs (see figure 1). Since French cuffs are now out of style, we will not use the French cuff pattern piece.

Figure 1 HOW TO MEASURE Before you begin measuring, gather all of your measuring tapes together. Lay them side-by-side so that you can see the tip of them. If you have purchased your tape measures from different stores, you may find that the tip of the measure to the one-inch mark is done differently. Some tape measures begin at zero and have a metal clip at that point. The distance from the tip to the one-inch mark will be one inch. Other tape measures have more than one inch from the end of the tip. They have a metal clip on an extended piece that can be as much as one half inch longer than a true one-inch measurement. They will have the metal strip, a space of tape, the zero mark and then the markings to the one-inch mark. As long as you remember to always use the tape starting at the zero mark, then your measurements will be accurate. However, if you forget and use the far end of the tape, you have added a minimum of one half inch to every measurement you have taken. It would not matter so much, but if you measure with one style of tape and then do the fitting with the other style of tape, your garment is not going to fit like you expect. To avoid this problem, it is better to adjust all of your tape measures so that they are exactly the same in length. Contrary to what many of us have been taught, most people cannot ©2016 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • APRIL 2016

use a pattern straight from the package. They must customize – or alter – the pattern to fit their personal body style. People often ask me why the garment they made doesn’t fit them like they want it to. This is because the pattern sizing is generic. It is designed for a shape determined by the designer. You may or may not be that shape – hence the need to customize the pattern to fit your body. Proper fit is only acquired by proper measuring. Following the chart below, have someone measure you over the types of garments that you will be riding in. Do NOT attempt to measure yourself – it does not work. Different bras hold you differently. If you measure with one type of bra, but ride with a different type of bra, your shirt may not fit as well as it could. If you wear spanks or girdles under your show clothing, then measurements must be taken over those garments. Everything you change about your body and what you wear affects how the finished garment will fit you.

Figure 2

Using the chart (Figure 2), measure over the fullest part of the bust. Then measure the natural waist, fullest part of the hips, across the back – just above your bra strap. You can also measure shoulder to shoulder if you like – I use the across the back measurement. Measure from the base of the neck to the finished length you want the garment to be. I have people measure the arm length from the armpit to the bone on the base of their hand. Do this with the arm held out – away from the body. Many other seamstresses will measure from the top of the shoulder down or from the neck, across the shoulder and down around a bent elbow to the wrist. The reason I measure the way I do is because there are many times when people send me their measurements. I have no way of knowing where or how they measured. I do not know if they measured from the same starting point that I would consider the starting point. This could be critical in getting the arm length right. By having people measure from the armpit to the hand bone, the accuracy is far better for my custom work. If you are the person doing the measuring and can control the starting point and measuring, then it is totally acceptable and preferred to measure from the neck down. If you are measuring a plus size person, there are several more measurements that you need to take. You need to measure the upper bust (top of bust above the point of bust), lower bust (where bra band sits), biceps, and wrist. I use this same method below every time I measure. While you are looking at the measurements, take a moment to add two inches to the arm length and to the back length. This is your hem allowance. If you cut your pattern to the finished garment measurements, your garment sleeve and hem will actually be too short. So, do this step before you go any further. (62)

1. Bust 2. Waist 3. Hips 4. Shoulder to shoulder 5. Back length, plus 2” (hem allowance) 6. Arm Length, plus 2” (hem allowance) 7. Neck Height TERM TO KNOW - SEAM ALLOWANCE: A seam allowance is the depth that the pattern designer determined was the correct distance to sew from the raw edge of the pattern piece. Most equestrian wear patterns have a ½ inch seam allowance but many others have a 5/8 inch seam allowance with a ½ inch seam allowance in the neck. People sometimes ask me whether they need to add a seam allowance to the pattern. For the most part, the answer is no. A seam allowance is the depth that the pattern designer determined was the correct distance to sew from the raw edge of the pattern piece. You will have to read the pattern, but most patterns do have the seam allowance built into the pattern. While on the subject of seam allowances, please be sure to read the instructions and determine what the suggested seam allow-ance is. If the seam allowance is ½ inch and you sew 1/8 inch – the garment will be too big when completed. If you sew ¾ inch but the seam allowance is only ½ inch, your garment will be too small. It is important that you know what the seam allowances are for the pattern you are using. Using the body measurements as a guide, check the pattern envelope to determine which size comes closest to your measurements. Do not panic if you wear a size 2 in street wear and

the pattern says you are a size 6. This is because every designer has their own standard for sizing and usually patterns have no correlation to street wear sizing. That is why, when you are sewing your own garment, it is critical that you go by your measurements. Every pattern will have a sizing chart listed. Most of the time, this sizing is listed on the back of the envelope. Sometimes, it is on the flap of the envelope. TERM TO KNOW – PATTERN VIEW: On the front of the envelope, there are pictures or drawings depicting a finished garment made using the pattern contained within the envelope. You may notice slight differences in each of the pictures/drawings. It may be as simple as color blocking or change in collar or the way it is fastened. These are called “views.” Each picture or drawing will have a number or letter beside it. This indicates that if you want your garment to look like this – then you need to use the pattern pieces corresponding to that picture. Now, to add confusion to everything – some views will use the same pattern pieces (like sleeve or back) for most of the garment but then change out some other pieces. By reading the instructions, identify the pattern pieces required to create your garment. The pattern pieces may be listed in numerical order on the first page, or may be listed separately on different pages of the instructions. Once you have identified the pattern pieces required for your garment (child or adult), either mark them in the instruction or write them down so that you know which pattern pieces you are looking for. To be continued in the next issue of Saddle Up!

Free Classified Ad NOT JUST YOUR 1ST CLASSIFIED AD, BUT YOUR 1ST CLASSIFIED AD

EVERY MONTH!

2016 OPEN HORSE SHOWS

Now when you run a 30 word classified in Saddle Up! Magazine, it is free of charge. It can be for a horse for sale, trailer, help wanted, whatever you need. Please Note: We do not count your contact information. A Note From The Editor: When I do receive a negative comment about Saddle Up! Magazine it is normally because we do not have enough horses for sale in our classified section. For months I have tried to figure out how to resolve this problem. I checked into online classified programs, I offered free classifieds that we shared with our followers on our Facebook page (which we still do, by the way), but it still didn’t quite resolve the issue. Before the World Wide Web came along (which I love and adore) our classified section would be 10-12 pages monthly. Now thanks to the instant gratification of the online classified ad, our pages have dwindled to 2-3 pages each month. Please know that I am not complaining, the time I save getting ad copy and photos via email is gratification enough for the loss of pages! But...there are still so many people that do not have the internet, email or even a smart phone. They are not reading the online classified ads. So, what I have decided to do is offer the first classified ad that you run each month in Saddle Up! Magazine to you free of charge. Each additional ad is $15 (30 words). Since our magazine is printed and online, I have covered all my bases, problem solved! What’s the catch? There always has to be one doesn’t there. You can email your ad, fax it, snail mail it, place it on our Facebook page or even on our website, but no, you cannot call us by phone and place your free classified, sorry. You also cannot ask us to run the ad more than one month, but you CAN resubmit it as often as you wish by the method of your choice each month by the 15th (our advertising deadline). Thank you for your support and business, Cindy Couturier, owner/editor, Saddle Up! Magazine
