Add a Serving of Caution to Tender Spring Grass By Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D. Spring is almost upon us in most of the country, so it’s time to revisit that critical topic: spring grazing. Transitioning a horse from hay to pasture must be handled with care; this point is nonnegotiable. For every horse, a gradual change from hay to grass is required to allow the digestive system to adapt, but for the insulin-resistant horse, grazing time and duration can make the difference between soundness and a disabling condition like laminitis. This time of year can be a test of patience for horse—and owner. The horse may be pawing at the gate to get to the first taste of tender spring grass, yet the owner must pay close attention to making the transition safe and healthful.

Reduce Risk of Infection When Traveling By Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D. For many horses, this is the season for traveling to horse shows and events. Considering periodic outbreaks of equine herpes virus (EHV-1) and other infectious diseases, it is critical that your horse be in top physical health before embarking to an unfamiliar area. The foundation of that health is a strong immune system. Added antioxidants and supportive nutrients can have a positive impact on your horse's ability to resist an infection. Boost supplementation of the following nutrients per day for at least two weeks before you leave and throughout the travels or event; wean your horse off of them for two weeks following your return: Vitamins E & C: 5 IUs of vitamin E and 5 mg of vitamin C per pound (0.45 kg) of body weight Selenium: 3 to 5 mg of selenium Vitamin A: 30 to 60 IUs per pound (.45 kg) of body weight Omega 3 fatty acids: 1/4 cup chia seeds or ½ cup ground flaxseeds per 400 lbs (180 kg) of body weight Protein: 14-16% of the diet, and of high quality protein by feeding a variety of protein sources Magnesium: 5,000 mg of magnesium per ©2016 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • APRIL 2016

As the leaves form from the first spring sprouts, the sugar and starch content increases, making it especially tempting. Regardless of the growth stage, quantities should be monitored because horses crave fresh grass and will eat volumes of it, making their overall non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) consumption dangerously high for horses who are overweight, cushingoid, or who have experienced pasture-related laminitis. Temperature and sunlight play a major role in the amount of NSC accumulation. To be safe, here are the rules: • When the night temperature is below 40 degrees F, the grass is too high in NSC. • Once it gets above 40 degrees F at night, the lowest NSC level is before sunrise. • The NSC level is highest in late afternoon, after a sunny day.

There is no exact “best time” to turn out your horses on pasture. Generally speaking in moderate climates, it’s safest before dawn, until approximately 10:00 am, and then again at night, starting at around 11:00 pm. Start slowly, offering hay when horses are not on fresh grass. Finally, test your pasture! Yes, testing is not only for hay. It will take the guesswork out of knowing which times are best.

Premier CTR Organization Offering Free Memberships For the first time in its 55-year history, the North American Trail Ride Conference is offering free 2016 memberships to people who have never been NATRC members. Executive Administrator, Laurie DiNatale, explains, “We are a distance competitive trail ride organization that values conditioned, sound, trail savvy horses that are a pleasure to ride. We value light and balanced riding and encourage the good care of horses over the distance and in camp. We want to share that with people.” Camaraderie, fun, beautiful scenery, exhilaration, pride in accomplishment, confidence, overcoming disappointments, stretching our abilities, and deepening partnerships with our horses, are offshoots of the experience of riding in NATRC sanctioned competitions. A three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier, he’s proudest of winning the Calgary Stampede, the highest-paying rodeo of the summer at $100,000. After finishing third in the semifinal round with a time of 7.7 seconds, he stepped up big when the title was at stake and finished first with an 8.1. Another 2015 highlight was having his horse “Colonel” recognized. “MFO Harvey” was voted the reserve champion PRCA/ AQHA Tie-Down Horse of the Year. Having a solid mount is key to any cowboy ’s success, and he was quick to credit his horse “Colonel,” an 11-year old sorrel gelding. “Colonel has been working really good this year. He had kind of been stiff this summer, but he started moving a lot more easily after I started him on Lubrigen. Without him, it wouldn’t be possible.” Dressage Rider Lauren Sprieser, USDF Gold, Silver & Bronze Medalist, qualified two horses for the 2015 USDF National Finals. She had an incredible ride on “Stratocaster” to place 3rd in the Intermediate I Finals on 69.871%, just .4 off the win. Lauren and Ellegria continued to improve at the Grand Prix Level, with a 68.333% in the Freestyle Finals, bringing down a packed house to place a close 4th. The most exciting part of Polocrosse Player Dori Johnson’s year was representing the United States at the Polocrosse World Cup. This prestigious event only takes place every 4 years, making it an enormous honor to be chosen for the team. Dori was the 2015 USA Ladies Captain and also a member of the US team that competed in the 2011 World Cup.

After the World Cup, Dori competed with her home club (Lone Star Polocrosse) in the Central Zone Regional Polocrosse Championships in Minnesota on her Australian Stock Horse, “Zenith.” The A Grade competition level was very tough, but luckily for Lone Star, they pulled out on top. Not only that, Dori and Zenith were named Best A grade #3 Player, which is the defense position. once you have released his inner energy through longeing (or some other form of forced exercise). You then will be in control and able to maintain safety. If you want more information on longeing, Part 5 of my Longevity Training Video Series provides you with detailed instruction on the art of longeing. I also recommend the DVDs in the Longevity Training series that cover “Working at Liberty” and “Ponying.” In addition, Dressage Principles, Parts 1 and 2, cover rider balance and rider aids, and they will help you to make sure that you are not creating frustration energy in your horse by using improper aids and by riding unbalanced. My final recommendation is Private Lesson Natural Balance, Bending Parts 1 and Parts 2. Keep in mind, the saying “there is safety in numbers” aptly applies to riding. Trail riding, or riding around a new show grounds, with a calm and “seasoned” horse and rider combination will give you and your horse confidence. Another way to give yourself more confidence is to check out the new environment in advance. Take a walk on the trail that you are going to ride so that you can scout out any problem spots beforehand. Always remember that you are in charge of your own safety first but also the safety of your horse. There is a fine line between limiting yourself because of fear and avoiding situations that you are unprepared for and only you (or a trained equine professional) can make that distinction. Building a Partnership with your Horse

STAYING IN CONTROL by Lynn Palm Riders frequently ask how to stay in control in new situations. In fact, the most common question I am asked at clinics and featured appearances relates to training and riding outside of the horse's normal environment. Riders are concerned about losing control and what to do if the horse is disobedient, bucks, or rears. These responses from the horse usually cause the rider to become fearful and apprehensive about getting hurt. The best way to avoid these problems before they arise is to exercise the horse before going into a new environment in order to release what I call the horse's “inner energy.” When a rider takes his or her horse into a new situation, the horse will almost always become overly sensitive and be higher strung in the new surroundings. Riders tend to expect that the horse will work and perform outside in the same way as he does at home. This is not the reality, especially for horses that have not been seasoned by going different places and traveling many miles. Any fit, healthy horse will have some level of inner energy that must be released before he can concentrate on the task at hand. The level of energy can vary in different horses, but it is always there in high strung or sensitive horses, and some lazy horses as well. When a horse has not released his inner energy, he will be thinking “fast.” Remember, you will be safe and able to teach a horse only if the horse is thinking “slow.” You can recognize when a horse is thinking “fast” if he is turning his head and moving his ears quickly and if his movements are fast. The horse's breathing is another important indicator, especially when riding outside. A horse will try to smell with big breaths if he is unsure or afraid. He will wring or switch his tail if he is irritated or frustrated. One of the best ways to help the horse release this inner energy is through what is called “forced exercise.” There are three types of forced exercise: (1) longeing, (2) liberty work, and (3) ponying. Of these three, the most important to master is longeing. Personally, I feel longeing is the most important form of forced exercise because you can use it anytime and anywhere. All you need is a good fitting halter, a cotton longe line, and a lunge whip. The longe whip should have a minimum length of three feet with a tassel that ends with a little “snapper.” There are a few rules to follow when longeing. If the horse is already bridled and needs to be longed, simply fit the halter over the bridle. Attach the longe line either over the nose (for more response) or under the chin. A longe line that ends in a chain will be more severe than a simple cotton line with a snap end. Before longeing with a bridle on, it is very important to secure the reins so that the horse cannot get them over his head, step on them, or get a leg between them. To do this, place the halter on over the bridle. Attach the longe line, with or without chain end, to the horse's halter either by threading it over the nose or under the chin. If you are riding in Western tack, bring the reins under the pommel and through the hole under the pommel, and tie them in a knot. Loop the knotted end over the saddle horn. Make sure that the reins are not so loose that the horse could put his nose down on the ground or get a leg through them. Be equally careful not to tie the reins too short as it will restrict the horse's head carriage. If you are riding in English tack, the easiest way to handle the issue of reins is simply to take them off. While longeing your horse, he will tell you if he has inner energy to release through the common signs of shaking his head like he is saying “no,” flicking his ears with tight or tense muscles in his neck and body, drastic loss of attention, and wanting to run, buck, kick up or kick at you. Those of us who love to ride our horses in the warmth and sun certainly hope so. By the time this article appears in Saddle Up, these hopes will have been realized (we hope). In fact, we're even predicting the appearance of trees greening out, instead of the drab brown and gray we've had to endure all winter. Things are livening up at Brighton. Some outdoor events are right around the corner, we have our first work bee of the season on the schedule, and we're taking a serious look at our trails. As we have reported before, we're anticipating some major projects involving trail improvements, not just trail maintenance. We're gong to be rehabilitating some sections of our trails and even re-routing some other sections. Once our trail survey work is completed, we expect these projects to get underway, and we're really excited about these new initiatives. Again, as mentioned before, a number of these projects will be undertaken in collaboration with the DNR. We recently published our newsletter, The Hoofbeats Gazette, and it includes the BTRA membership form and the yearly Schedule of Events. The membership form has been modified to reflect a change in our organization's policy. We have created a new category of membership designed to reach out to those who use and enjoy the equestrian trails but are not trail riders. We welcome many people to the trails who are hikers, dog walkers, birders, and folks who just want to stroll through a beautiful natural setting. We want to make them part of our organization as Associate Members and will be publicizing this opportunity through a variety of means. Dues will be nominal, they will be invited to participate in our trail maintenance activities, and they will even be welcome at our social events. We'll let readers know how this is working out. By the way, wheeled and motorized vehicles are not allowed on the equestrian trails at Brighton and we think that is in everyone's best interests. The other big news is that we now have a new, improved and fully operational website: www. brightontrailriders.net. BTRA member Amy Scharmen, the Chair of our Website and Facebook Committee, has headed up this project and she's done an outstanding job. The careful reader will note that this new website differs only from the old one in that it is a “.net” instead of a “.com.” Amy also oversees our Facebook operation which has become very

popular. Our members and anyone else interested in BTRA activities can now receive information through several sour-ces: the website, the newsletter, Facebook posts, and group email messages. We talked with many riders that have never been to our trails and hope all of you that took information home can come and participate in our 2016 events. It was surprising to hear so many people did not know about our trails or camp out events. The DNR will be publishing more equestrian information in 2017 on their websites, such as Pure Michigan and Michigan parks. Our state has so much to offer to trail enthusiasts. Please mark your calendar for our Spring Camp Out on May 12, 13, 14 and 15th. This is a 4 day event held at our Whitford Lake event area. As always, there will be water for horses, an outhouse, manure removal, and picket poles in the beautiful grassy area for camping. Electric pens and corrals are allowed. Pancake breakfast weekend mornings and a potluck supper on Saturday night will be provided. The Annual Fall Equestrian Camp Out will be on September 15, 16, 17 and 18th. In addition to it being the same as the Spring event, there will be a fundraising auction of donated items on Saturday evening. Bring anything you wish to donate and we will sell it! How do I know if my horse and I are ready for a distance ride? If you're new to distance riding and plan to attend a Novice/Intro ride and if you've been riding 8-10 mile trail rides and incorporating some trotting/walking intervals chances are that your horse is prepared to do a Novice ride. If you are planning on riding 25 miles either Competitive or Limited Distance in general you

should be riding at least 3 days a week at distances between 5 and 15 miles each ride. You should be trotting most of the training ride only walking when the footing or terrain requires a walk. A medium to slow trot is fine. Other things to work on at home are your horse's manners. The horse needs to be able to be examined by a Vet and not be a danger to the Vet or anyone else, be able to trot in hand in a circle in both directions as well as a straight line, and also behave safely on the trail with other riders and horses. This also should not be your horse's first camping trip! You should know what type of containment system your horse can be left in or on safely and comfortably throughout the night. Getting your horse used to camping prior to the event also helps them to relax and eat and drink properly which is of utmost importance. What equipment (saddle, bridle, etc.) will I need in order to do distance riding? One of the great things about riding distance is that riders use any and all types of equipment. While a lot of riders will eventually purchase a saddle made specifically for endurance riding, there is no reason to run out and buy a bunch of new equipment to start out. Stick with what is working for you and your horse for now. There are many endurance related products, including saddles, that you will see at the rides. Some of these items you will eventually want and some you won't. Websites such as www.endurance.net has a long list for endurance related saddle and tack vendors. There is only one equipment rule and that is that riders under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet. A helmet is strongly recommended and there are many options available. Some of the more commonly used helmets are the Tipperary and the Troxel brands. Reminder that the main and group campgrounds open May 1st; but the (2) Day Use parking areas are available all year around. We had a great turnout at the February Membership meeting and wanted to review a couple discussion items for those who were not able to attend. The forest service has future plans to develop a new trail that will add a few additional miles to our trail system. Trail #25 could possibly begin tagging in late 2016 or early 2017. Trail #15 will be temporary closed to vehicle access to address the hazardous muddy spots. Trail #24 is complete and ready for riders. Riders can access Trail #24 from the Hungerford entrance on 19 Mile and enjoy a short ride or begin from the main, group or day use area for a longer ride. Total 'Horse Trail' miles including Trail #24 are 40.36. There are two versions of the Hungerford map that members will be able to download from the website or receive via email; a new electronic map which has the trails listed by trail numbers and the beta version can be viewed via a cell phone app. If you are challenged with identifying a riding

buddy to enjoy the trails, don't give up. HTRA is pleased to announce our new service of providing a Guided Trail Ride. MiCMO and NACMO awards for 2015 were handed out and our Michigan members should be proud. We are thrilled to have many members winning the national high point in their division. This is an awesome accomplishment and we have some great riders! Our fabulous mother and son team, The Little Buckaroos, were first in Michigan for the short course team and third in the nation. Great job for a first grader and his mom. Congratulations to our President Melissa Fox for securing the long course individual national high point leader. Dennis Hurley competed in the individual short course this year and also took national high point. The very talented Regan Wittredge took the title of national high point junior. To top it all off, the family team of Turn & Burn Babes took the national high point long course. This is something to be very proud of especially when your youngest member is only five years old! The ride weekends in Michigan are increasing in competitors which allows us to be contenders for the national titles. If there is a tie at the national level when the points from the top five rides are added up, then they use the number of competitors at each ride to break the tie. Keep it up Michigan, this is truly a great sport, more people are figuring that out! We would love to see you at the rides this year. Our calendar is full with eight weekends of treasure hunting in the woods. It will be a lengthy season with our first ride beginning on April 7th at DBarD Ranch in Chase, MI and our final ride of the season on November 12th and 13th at Kensington MetroPark in Milford, MI. In May, we will be traveling to Ortonville Recreation Area on the 14th and 15th to help support the wonderful trails there. After that we travel to Silver Creek County Park for Fun

Pleasant, MI was called to order by Pres. Kathy Kruch at 11:40 AM. Those also in attendance were VP Bob Howell, Treasurer Char Ostrom (and husband, George), Secretary Marilyn M, Director Chuck Fanslow, Joe Burrill, Karilynn Noppe, Matt Lillie, Harland and daughter Alora Fish. Director Lola Kuhn was unable to attend. After member introductions, the Secretary's report from 2-20-16 was reviewed with one correction noted. Chuck made the motion, which Bob seconded, to accept the report with the single correction. All voted in favor and the motion passed. The only new correspondence was the receipt for the brochures ordered from Uprint. We currently have 37 MFTA members, 21 of whom are MFTHBA members. Treasurer Char Ostrom reported that our association has a good balance in both accounts. The MFTHBA/MFTA/MTRA National Trail ride date has been set for Oct. 1-9. The ride will go from Goose Creek campground to Cadillac, MI. You must become a member of MI Trail Rider Association (www.mtra.org) to participate. Enroll in the MFTHBA Fox Trot America program to earn yourself a point toward yearend awards. Go to www.mfthba.com. We have reviewed and discussed the proposed MFTA bylaw changes at three meetings, so Char made the motion, which Chuck seconded, to adopt these changes. All voted in favor and the motion passed. The present bylaws will be updated to reflect these changes. No new info was available concerning the MHC lawsuit. Marilyn nominated Joe Burrill for the 2 year Director position and he accepted! PROUD LAKE TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION Hello Everyone! The weather is getting warmer and it seems that Spring might be in the air! Our first get together is actually a trail cleaning event. We would love to have your help cleaning up our trails. We had a few days with very strong winds that brought down a few big branches. We also have just general trail cleaning to do. This will be Sunday, May 1st and we will be meeting in the staging area around 10:00. If that is too early for you, please just come when you can. We will be having a potluck lunch that day and anyone that wants to camp the night before, we will be offering camping on Saturday, April 30th. As we move into spring we want you to hear a bit about our riding events that we have planned. Saturday, May 21st is our Scavenger Hunt Ride. This ride will consist of riding all of our different trails looking for specific objects. There will be a potluck lunch and a bonfire following this event. Camping will be offered for the entire weekend. After that, on Saturday, June 25th we will have our Obstacle Challenge Ride. This ride will have six challenges on 3.5 miles of trails. Each obstacle will be timed. There will be a potluck lunch following the event and there will be camping available all weekend. Our final event of 2016 will be the Circle Ride. This popular favorite ride is one that we cohost with Kensington Trail Riders. It consists of riding the eleven mile loop that connects the two parks. RANCH HORSE ASSOCIATION OF MI Welcome Spring and welcome show season! RHAM is ready to kick off the start of the year with several clinics leading up to our first show – The RHAM Spring Challenge - which is May 13-15 at Berrien Springs, MI. This show will be judged by 3 judges – Woody Taylor, Trevor Walton, and Chuck Schroeder. Please see our website for a full showbill. As detailed below, RHAM is offering clinics almost every weekend in April. Prices are below. Auditors and spectators are welcome at our clinics - $10/day fee for adults; $5/day for youth. Clinic times are 9am-5pm ET (Michigan Time). Please call or text Jim Harroff at 574-215-6809 if you are interested in a discounted group auditing rate. April 9th, RHAM presents Reining with Dave DeWell and on April 10th, Matt Thomas will teach Basic Cow Work. Participate in both clinics and save $25! These clinics will be held at Berrien County Youth Fairgrounds. Later in April, RHAM presents another Basic Cow Work Clinic with Corey Dahms of TGF Ranch on April 23 & 24. Clinic will be located in Hastings, MI. Ride 1 day for $200 or save $25 and do both days for $375. Lastly, ARHA Judge, Jill Phillips will teach a 2016 Show Season Tune Up at Berrien County Youth Fairgrounds on April 30-May 1. She will be going over a Judge's perspective including a tutorial on score sheets. Emphasis will be on Showmanship and Trail April 30, with focus on Horsemanship and Ranchmanship May 1. Fee is $150/day or save $25 for both days and pay $275. Please see RHAM’s website for forms and further information! RHAM is seeking a 2016 Youth Representative. The Youth Representative participates

in our shows and events and is an integral part of what we do. Please see our website for rules and applications which are due May 1, 2016. The Youth Representative will be announced at the RHAM Spring Challenge show at Berrien Springs – May 13-15, 2016. SLEEPY HOLLOW TRAIL RIDERS ASSOC. The 2015 SHTRA Volunteer of the Year award was given to Rosie Johnson. Rosie has been a trail riding member of SHTRA for several years and joined the Board of Directors in 2015. An avid equestrian, she is one of the founding members of the Polka Dot Drill Team. With her willing, friendly attitude she is always asking to help. When the bridge to the island was under construction last spring, she donated equipment and made that project possible. Rosie's advice, helping hands and service are greatly appreciated. She was presented with an embroidered pink jacket at the 2016 annual meeting. See Rosie’s pictures on our Facebook page. The rustic cabin that SHTRA helped create is rentable for 2016 equestrians. This cute, rustic insulated cabin can sleep 4 with bunk bed and couch, table, heat, porta-potty, picnic table, and 4 picket poles! It rents for $60.00 plus registration fee a night. Nearby, the modern cabin rents with showers, microwave and electricity for $96.00 plus registration fee. It also has 4 pickett poles and trail to connect to the trail network. The new SHTRA logo is ready and new apparel and decals are ordered! The logo features the awesome island bridge with horses crossing it. Thanks to Brad Wirostek, an upcoming graphic designer, the outline of the island bridge with pine trees looks really sharp. Our online store will soon be ready thanks to webmaster Barb Drake and helper Todd Ring. We have PayPal to make your ordering easier. Complete with a fabulous luncheon menu, silent auction items and door prizes, Michigan members and their guests enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of comradery and presentations. Our speakers for the program were Joanne Coy and Jessica Shier. Joanne is participating in the WDAA Judges Program and shared the many things she has been learning in the program. An advocate for western dressage and honoring the horse, Joanne has been an avid horse owner and rider for her entire life. Jessica is a WDAMI Board member and she gave an enthusiastic presentation about the Michigan organization. She has been actively involved in preparing and showing for the last few years. Articulate and inspiring, Jess motivates her listeners to get out there and join WDAMI, show and have fun! Thank you, Ladies for your presentations to our program!! Plus, so many thanks to our outstanding WDAMI secretary, Rachel Belcher, for organizing our banquet. She worked in the wings and, as always, made this event a delightful time for all. The Western Dressage Train the Trainers program being held April 19 and 20, 2016 at the Nottingham Equestrian Center in East Lansing, MI is a program for professionals and amateurs. The clinicians; Cliff Swanson and Frances Carbonnel will be presenting the program and Michigan demo riders will be assisting in their presentation. This horseless clinic is the best way to learn about this rapidly growing sport. WESTERN MI APPALOOSA REGIONAL We've been getting some decently warm weather lately and I'm sure getting the itch to start riding more and working youngsters. Now, I'm just hoping the mud will dry up a bit so I can actually get into the arena. Don't forget to mark these important dates on your calendar: the WMAR Red, White and Blue show at Mason will be June 4 & 5, 2016, the WMAR State Show at Centreville will be July 16 & 17, 2016 and the Sizzler Show that we cohost with MApHA will be August 6 & 7, 2016. For 2016, we will be offering both Ranch Horse Pleasure as well as Ranch Horse Trail at our WMAR sponsored shows. It was decided that at the June show in Mason, Open Stallion halter classes will be split into Jr. & Sr. with the Mare and Gelding age splits remaining as is. At the Centreville show, ALL open halter classes will be split Jr. & Sr.

If you're looking to make a little extra money while showing this summer, sign your favorite show mount up for the WMAR Incentive program. Prize money is given out at the banquet based on the number of points earned in your division throughout the show season. Forms can be found under the “Service Page” on the WMAR website. It appears that 2016 will be our last year with our fabulous show office team of Brad & Kyle (and, sometimes, Julie Dopp). The WMAR, as well as the MApHA have started the hunt for someone to run our show offices starting in 2017. Please, let us know if you'd be interested in running the show office or know of someone who is. 2017 will be our last year at Centreville due to a date conflict. If anyone has a suggestion for another show facility, please let a board member know. We usually need 100-120 stalls, an arena large enough to run our games classes in and the same date. I'm still waiting for information on any news and/or photos of your Appaloosas that you would like to share, I'd love to have you share them with us either on our Facebook page or by emailing them to me to include in the newsletter. Ron Walker called the meeting to order at 6:30. Trail Report: Just a reminder, ORV's can now ride the roads. DNR Meeting Update: We received an email response from the DNR explaining how the Memorandum of Understanding agreement could benefit both the DNR and our Group. By providing a financial report to the DNR helps them gauge the health of our organization and could then qualify for DNR matching funds programs available if we choose to participate. Also not found, as of yet is a Gift and Acceptance form for the Pavilion. Euchre Tournament Update: A big thanks to Sonya & Todd Peters for chairing another successful YSTRA Euchre Tournament held at the Yankee Springs Township Hall. Dr. Rachelle

Bennecke spoke to us about the wonderful organization, Cancer Families United, explaining that all money stays in South West Michigan, they have all volunteer help so no money goes to salaries. Some money stocks the snack cart in the hospital outpatient chemo floor. YSTRA made $675.00, Skip Burger made a motion to add $145.00. Voted on 7 yes, 4 no, to make a total of $820.00 donation. This makes a total of $1,640.00 donated in 2016 to Cancer Families United from YSTRA. Carla made the motion to send the check now, Ruth 2nd, voted on 12-0. A big thank you to Caledonia Feed Store for donating $150.00 to YSTRA. Please tell them thank you when you shop at their store. Bench Update: Skip got a quote; each bench will cost about $118.00. Ron will be sending in the bench diagram to the DNR for approval. Lunch will be provided by YSTRA. Newsletter update: Ron read us what he has written so far and asked for suggestions. A membership form will be included and a reminder that YSTRA dues are due January 1st. This newsletter will be sent electronically to all who have email and mailed to any who does not. Carla Walker brought up the need for road signs at Sager and McKibben roads. Ron will check with Tom regarding these signs. Next meeting will be at the Yankee Springs Horse Camp Pavilion.
