Magazine News Briefs ASPCA Grants Over $1 Million to Equine Groups in 2015 to Assist At-Risk Horses 'Help a Horse Day' contest and other initiatives fueled awareness and advocacy for equine protection. The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) announced that in 2015 it awarded over $1 million in equine-related grants to support 124 organizations across the country in their efforts to rescue and rehabilitate horses. The grant money supported several areas of equine welfare including large-scale rehabilitation, emergency relief grants, safety net programs, the nationwide ASPCA Help a Horse Day grants contest, and the Rescuing Racers Initiative, which aids in the rescue and rehabilitation of retired racehorses to save them from slaughter. “Equine rescues and sanctuaries step in to care for abused/neglected horses, providing a vital service that promotes equine welfare, and the ASPCA is proud to assist these groups in their important work,” said Jacque Schultz, senior director of the ASPCA Equine Fund. “Horses have been a central part of the ASPCA's mission for nearly 150 years, and we are grateful to our special supporters for their generosity that enables us to continue our work to protect horses.” In 2015, more than 100 equine rescue groups held events across 33 states to raise awareness about equine protection for ASPCA Help a Horse Day, celebrated annually on April 26 – a date chosen for its significance to the ASPCA's long history of horse protection. In 1866, ASPCA founder Henry Bergh stopped a cart driver from beating his horse, resulting in the first successful arrest for horse mistreatment on April 26 of that year. The protection of horses has remained a core part of the ASPCA's mission ever since, including legislation, advocacy, rescue and targeted grants. “In just two years, the ASPCA Help a Horse Day contest has become an integral part of our equine grants program, and we were thrilled to see groups around the country engage their communities in creative new ways to help spread awareness about how to protect horses,” said Schultz. “We look forward to expanding this contest in 2016 to recognize even more groups for their year-

round commitment to equine welfare as we celebrate throughout the United States on April 22-24.” Most of the ASPCA's equine-related grants are awarded as part of the ASPCA Equine Fund, which provides life-saving resources to support nonprofit U.S. equine welfare organizations who work to rescue and protect horses. The grants benefit equine organizations striving to achieve best practices in both nonprofit management and equine care. Congress Passes Flurry of Bills in December - Several AHC Priorities Win Approval

The 114th Congress, though it started with the partisan gridlock that has become the new normal in Washington, ended the year with a burst of productivity by passing several major pieces of legislation including a tax extender bill, an omnibus appropriations bill, and a five year highway bill. Each of these bills includes provisions favorable to the overall horse industry, have been priorities for the American Horse Council. In addition, other bills championed by the AHC have seen Congressional action and could be passed with enough industry support in the second session of this Congress which adjourns in December. “The AHC works on a diverse set of issues that impact the horse industry, often over the course of several years. For this reason it's not every day that we see several AHC priorities pass Congress in the span of a ©2016 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • FEBRUARY 2016 (20)

month,” said AHC president Jay Hickey. “These three bills included tax provisions, guest worker reforms, and trail programs that will benefit the racing, showing, and recreational segments of the industry.” The Tax Extender bill, called the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015, reinstates three-year-depreciation for all race horses for two more years. It also increases the Section 179 business expense deduction back to $500,000 and makes this provision permanent. The bill restores bonus depreciation for qualifying new property, including assets used in the horse business, such as horses and other equipment, purchased and placed in service during 2015 through 2019. The bill also restores and makes permanent favorable tax treatment for land donated for conservation purposes, particularly land donated by farmers and ranchers, like horse owners and breeders. “These provisions benefit racing and everyone who is in the horse business. Importantly, horse businesses, breeders, and farms can now make long term plans to take advantage of these tax provisions instead of just hoping Congress will extend them for one year, as has been the case recently,” continued Hickey. The omnibus appropriations bill that will fund the government until September 30, 2016, also includes important H-2B temporary worker changes. The bill rolls back parts of a burdensome new H-2B rule and will make it easier for horse industry employers to use the program when no American workers can be found. “Horse industry employers, mainly horse trainers and owners who cannot find American workers to fill semi-skilled jobs at racetracks and horse shows, often have to turn to this program for workers. They do this because they have no choice and this program has gotten progressively more expensive and harder to use. Most H-2B workers in the industry are directly responsible for the care of the horses upon which the entire horse industry is dependent and without them thousands of American horse industry jobs could be lost,” said AHC vice president of government affairs Ben Pendergrass. “We have been working on fixing the shortcomings of the H-2B program for years, both through the regulatory process, WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

There is still work that needs to be done, but this bill will improve the program,” said Pendergrass. The AHC says the end-of-the-year legislative sprint to the finish line also saw reauthorization of two programs important to recreational riders, the Federal Highway Administration's Recreational Trails Program and the Land and Water Conservation Fund. The multi-year national highway bill recently signed by the president known as the 'Fixing Americas Surface Transportation Act, or the FAST Act, reauthorizes RTP for the next five years and provides $85 million annually for the program. RTP provides funding directly to the states for recreational trails and trailrelated facilities for all recreational trail users and has greatly benefitted equestrians. The omnibus appropriations bill reauthorizes the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) for three years with funding of $450 million for FY 2016. The program, which expired on October 1, 2015, provides funds and matching grants to federal, state and local governments for the acquisition of land and water for recreation and the protection of natural resources and helps provide equestrians with increased recreational trail riding opportunities. “We are very pleased RTP was included in the FAST Act. Every time a multi-year national highway bill is debated there is always an attempt to eliminate this program and this time was no different,” said Pendergrass. “The AHC has advocated for the RTP program since its inception and grassroots support from recreational trail users, including many equestrians, played an important role in making sure RTP was included in bill.” “This has been a productive legislative session for the AHC and horse industry. In addition to these important legislative victories the AHC also advanced several other important bills. The Prevent All Soring Tactics Act (PAST Act) (S.1121/ H.R.3268) that would end the soring of Tennessee Walking Horses was re-introduced and currently has 232 co-sponsors in the House and 48 in the Senate. Additionally, the National Forest System Trails Stewardship Act (H.R. 845/S.1110) that would help improve trails on National Forests has been

gaining momentum and has been called 'the most bi-partisan bill in Congress',” said Hickey. “We will be working on these bills and other issues that impact the entire horse industry in 2016.”

Equine Affaire Introduces Affordable Ways to Sell Horses in Ohio this April Do you have one or more horses that you want to sell—or a stallion, training/boarding facility, or other equine service you want to promote? What could be a better venue at which to sell a horse than a centrally-located and well-established equine facility like the Ohio Expo Center and a first-class equestrian event like Equine Affaire? Yes, you can sell your horse online, at your barn, or through an auction, but finding the right buyer at Equine Affaire just might be quicker, easier, and more profitable. Tens of thousands of avid horse people representing all corners of the equestrian world will travel to Columbus, OH, on April 7-10 to attend the 53rd Equine Affaire, and many of these attendees will be in the market for a new horse. Exhibitors and horses for sale will be organized in the barn by breed/type of horse, and a map of the Gilligan Complex and Horse & Farm Exhibits will be included in the event program that is distributed for free to adult attendees as they enter the show. Renting a “For Sale” stall. Selling your horse directly to buyers at Equine Affaire just makes sense. You can rent a 10 x 10 inline “For Sale” stall for just $125 for the duration of the show. With each stall rental you'll receive a “For Sale” sign to post on the stall

and a free listing pre-event on equine affaire.com that will include the horse's breed, age, gender, name, discipline, level of training, price, photo, and stall location. “For Sale” stalls may be used only for horses that are for sale - not horses brought to the event for other purposes. Though Equine Affaire is a four-day event, you only need to commit to featuring your horse in a “For Sale” stall for at least two days and specify your date of arrival. And, if you sell your horse at the show, you may substitute another horse you have for sale in the vacated stall - or leave the show at your discretion. Horse owners who rent “For Sale” stalls will also have the opportunity to give interested customers (age 18 and over) the opportunity to test ride their horses in the Ohio Expo Center's Denny Hales Pavilion as long as they have each customer complete and sign a release form and they submit the form to the Barn Office. They may also rent a tack stall next to their “For Sale” stall(s) for an additional $75 in order to store their bedding, tack, feed, and other equipment while at the show. Marketing Your Stallion, Stable, or other Equine-related Services. And what if you want to market your farm, stable, stallion, or boarding, training, and breeding facility at Equine Affaire? The Horse & Farm Exhibits area is where horse owners, stable/farm owners, and horse service providers connect in person with customers who are interested in all breeds of horses and a variety of equestrian disciplines. Participating in Equine Affaire's Horse & Farm Exhibits is very affordable...and the benefits can be huge. The fee for each 10 x 10 inline exhibit stall is $200, and an end/corner stall is $50 additional. The rental of each exhibit stall includes one four-day pass to Equine Affaire (a $50 value), and each Horse & Farm exhibitor receives a one-line listing of stall number, farm name, breed of horse, and phone number or web site address in the free event program (if exhibitor application and stall payment are received by the print deadline of February 29th). Distance Riding Extravaganza in Reno, Nevada - North American Trail Ride Conference America's largest distance trail riding organizations, the North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC) and the American

Endurance Ride Conference (AERC), are combining celebrations to host a whopper of a convention in Reno, on Feb. 19-20, 2016. Open to anyone interested in distance riding, the two days of seminars are packed with presentations by leading veterinarians in the sports. Some of the topics include horse and rider communication, stresses on the human body, integrative sports medicine, the equine eye, equine lameness, human riding fitness, and outlandish online equine myths. There will even be a session with top competitors discussing audience questions. A two-day Veterinary Continuing Education course is being offered in conjunction with the convention on February 18-19. No convention would be complete without a host of vendors and entertainment. The vendors will have tried and true as well as the latest items in electronics, tack, clothing, feed, supplements, and other gear. Entertaining convention goers on Friday evening will be local music and cowboy poetry celebrities Richard Elloyan and Steve Wade. NATRC sanctions timed distance competitions with winners determined from a combination of condition, soundness and trail ability. AERC sanctions distance competitions that have a maximum completion time, but winners are determined by order of completion provided the horses are fit to continue. USDF Congratulates New “L” Program Graduates The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce that 68 USDF members successfully graduated from the USDF L Education Program in 2015. This program is designed to prepare candidates to enter the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) “r” Judges Training Program, to qualify individuals to judge schooling shows, and to give competitors, trainers, and instructors greater insight into the evaluative process of judging dressage. The program also serves to provide continuing education for licensed judges. The L Program is an excellent opportunity for all USDF members to learn how to improve their scores and their ability to view other rides from a judge's perspective, whether or not they plan on becoming licensed judges themselves. This prestigious award is made each year to those who have made a significant contribution to Pony Club at the Local or Regional and National Levels over a period of 20 years or more. The recipients of the Founders Awards for 2015 are: Benjamin Hurt Hardaway III, Alita (Bunny) Hendricks, Nancy Ambrosiano, Michael Amos, and Judith Fannin. Benjamin Hurt Hardaway III. Co-Founder and former DC of Midland Foxhounds Pony Club, Ben was born in Columbus, Georgia where he also met and married Sarah

Mcduffie. They had three children, Sarah, Mary, and Susannah who were all active members of the club. Ben is a life member of USPC and served on the Board of Governors from 1957 to 1962 with a second term 1968 to 1970. Ben was an active member of Midland Hunt where he enjoyed foxhunting and creating the Hardaway Crossbred hounds which are in 80 percent of crossbred packs in America today. Alita (Bunny) Hendricks. Bunny joined Woodlawn Pony Club at age 11 and obtained her “A” just weeks after her 16th birthday. Earning her BA degree in Elementary Education allowed her to teach elementary school for 21 years. As a new “A”, Bunny was a regular volunteer instructor for Suncoast Pony Club in Florida, teaching mounted and Horse Management meetings, coaching rally teams, teaching camps, and holding rating preps. Bunny is currently a National Examiner and Chief Horse Management Judge. She has been her region's HMO and RIC, presented numerous H-B and H-A preps and numerous volunteer positions at the regional rallies. She is a proud parent of one son, and has been married 35 years to husband Mark. Nancy Ambrosiano. A Pony Club member since the age of 6, Nancy graduated with her “A” from Princess Anne Hunt Pony Club in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She has taught Pony Club in Connecticut, New York, Virginia, North Carolina, and California. Nancy is still active with the USPC Quiz Committee and has helped judge classroom, barn, and mega-room at Champs West and Festival several times. She has chaired Communications, and served on Governance, Regional Administration, Marketing, National Youth Congress, and Foxhunting committees. She was inducted into the Academy of Achievement in 2005 and has served two 3-year terms on the USPC Board of Governors. Michael Amos. Mike's daughter joined Walnut Creek Pony Club in 1992, and like all Pony Club parents, his first Pony Club jobs were hauling, feeding, mucking, raking, painting, or constructing jumps. Mike became the Treasurer and Joint DC of Walnut Creek Pony Club in Cincinnati and he was an all-around volunteer at the Midsouth mega-rally in 1993 in Lexington, Kentucky. Wanting to get more involved, Mike became

an Assistant Horse Management judge in 1994 and just a year later a Chief Horse Management Judge. From 2000 to 2016 he served on the Board of Governors. He has been the VP of Regional Administration for two terms and Secretary for one term. His greatest accomplishments in Pony Club include implementing the age extension, creating the Midwest Championships, and presenting workshops on conflict resolution and organizing regional leadership training camps. Judith Fannin. Judith started riding at age 10. Although her start was in mostly western classes, she was introduced to dressage and jumping at age 14 and was hooked. After her husband, Larry bought 10 acres she started teaching and became involved with Clearwater Pony Club as a sponsor. Both of Judith's daughters ended up joining the club and Judith became the DC for several years before taking over as Regional Supervisor of the Sunshine Region. In 1987, both Judith and her oldest daughter, Janet decided to become National Examiners. After 24 years as an NE, Judith retired, but still loves the challenge of working with the young riders and the camaraderie of the incredibly knowledgeable National Examiners. Western Dressage: A Closer Look at Tack By Lynn Palm Any time you are getting into a different discipline, it is important to know what tack is allowed in competition. The smart rider will research ahead of time to learn all the rules about what tack is permitted and what is not. I recommend practicing at home with the tack you plan to use at the show. This is so important! Train with at home the bridles, bits, and saddles/pads that you would use at a show. This allows you and your horse to be familiar with the tack and helps avoid unpleasant surprises on show day. Most people will have a nice show saddle that fits the horse and rider, but never use it unless they are at a show. Instead of using their “good” saddle at home to school and practice in, they may have a “working” saddle, but one of poor quality that does not fit the horse and rider. If you want to ride well you have to have properly fitting tack for you and your horse. Properly fitting tack will allow you to have better balance in the saddle. Bits are another topic. Some people will train at home with a milder bit and use a harsher bit at the show. I advise against this practice because it will only cause problems. When a horse goes to a show, he is in new and unfamiliar surroundings. A new place will always make a horse more sensitive. Using a more severe or responsive bit to get control of a horse who is more reactive at a show will only intensify the horse's reactions even more. Keep the same bit, use the mildest bit possible to promote relaxation. A relaxed mouth always gives you a more responsive horse. The Western Dressage Association of America is very new, only a few years old. The association just released their rules a few months ago, which you can find online at their website, http://westerndressageassociation.org. Please refer to page 14 through 17 for all the tack and attire rules. Let's summarize what tack is required: Headstalls and Bits • Western headstalls - a western cavesson is optional. • Smooth snaffles, 3-piece smooth snaffles, or Mullen mouthpiece bits are allowed. Use the snaffle for any level test and all ages of horses. Snaffles are ridden with two hands. • Hackamore (bosal) can be used in Introductory and Basic Levels only. • Curb bits can be used on any age of horse and any level. They can be ridden with two hands. If you refer to the tack rules, you will find the specific sizes and types of bits that are legal. (You should also review the section on illegal bits so you don't use the wrong one.) Saddles and Whips • Western saddles that are permitted include stock saddles, work saddles, Aussie, or native or side saddle can be used. • Silver on saddles will not count over good working equipment. A horn on the saddle is not required. • Whips are allowed no longer than 47.2". Troubleshooting Sewing Problems By Pegg Johnson Show Clothes Unlimited Gummed Up Needle: If you have a gummed up needle - one with visible rubbery “stuff” globbed on it, start by inserting a new needle. Then coat both your bobbin thread and your thread spool with SEWERS AIDE™. This item lubricates the needle, reduces friction, and helps eliminate the gunk. Skipped Stitches on Lycra™: If you are sewing on Lycra™ or Lycra™ blend fabric, be sure that you are using a new needle. You may have to experiment to determine which type of needle works best for you. Although most experts recommend a ball point needle, I have found that a universal needle works well and gives me good results. Skipped Stitches on Foil Dot: If you are sewing on metallic fabric or foil dot fabric, a few drops of SEWERS AIDE™ will help the needle glide through the “discs.” Appliques Slide or Do Not Lay Smooth: Applying a temporary adhesive spray, such as 505 spray, will help keep your appliques in place. Be sure that you spray the wrong side of the applique LIGHTLY and away from your work project. Protect from over spray by using newspapers and/or a “spray box”. Once sprayed, the appliques will become tacky. You can then place or arrange them as you choose. Even though you are using a temporary spray, it is still a good idea to pin your applique to your garment before sewing. Note that the temporary sprays will not bond all types of fabrics. Applying an Applique: If affixing an applique to a stretchy fabric, it is wise to let the item lay, untouched overnight or for at least a few hours. During the course of arranging and re-

arranging your appliques, you may inadvertently stretch the base fabric. Letting it lay flat for a few hours will allow the fabric to go back to its natural state. If you see your applique bunching up at the end of the waiting time, then you know that you stretched the fabric. Lift the applique off and reset it. Have patience and be sure that you do this step. The end result will be worth the extra effort and time involved. Presser Foot Sticks or Scrapes Applique: If you are sewing leather or a pleather applique, it is not unusual for the presser foot to stick to the surface, causing the top layer to wrinkle, the applique to not progress through the feet, or even scrape the coloring off of the top of the applique. This is especially true in humid weather. You can try a nylon or plastic foot to see if that alleviates the problem. If not, you will need to purchase some form of “topping” to allow the presser foot to glide over the applique. The ideal method is using a water-soluble stabilizer. It can be found in the embroidery section of most stores and is marketed under several brand names. I prefer the lighter weight stabilizer. It is about the weight of cling wrap. It tears away easily and any “fuzzies” are eliminated quickly by dabbing at them with a damp cotton swab. There is a heavier brand of water-soluble stabilizer but it takes more water to dissipate. The lighter weight stabilizer nearly eliminates the chance of damaging any of the leather appliques. Use only a small square or piece of the stabilizer. Only enough to cover one applique. You do not need an entire sheet. As you progress through sewing your applique, you can tear off the stabilizer and use the unused portion. NOTE: Place a finger on your stitching and tear the stabilizer sideways. Tearing UP can damage your stitches.

THE SCIENCE OF EQUINE BEHAVIOR

Do not use cling type wrap as a substitute for the water-soluble stabilizer. There are processing oils in the cling type wrap that can damage your sewing machine. (At least that is what I was told at a seminar that I attended). In an emergency, you can use household wax paper. It is probably not the best choice. However it is usually readily available when you are encountering this problem while sewing an outfit at midnight and you need the outfit for showing the next day. (Not that any of us wait until the last minute to finish up). Place a piece of the wax paper on top of your applique, between the applique and the presser foot and sew like you normally would. Once sewn, tear the wax paper away and dispose of it. To tear away the wax paper, place a finger on the stitching of the applique. This protects your stitches from damage. Please note that you should tear sideways, parallel to the stitching. If you tear UP, you do stand a chance of ripping out the stitching that you just sewed in. The down side of using wax paper is that you may have paper “fuzzies” that you will need to remove with tweezers. This is tedious, but does work in an emergency. MHC’s Michigan Horse Expo, The Best Expo Ever! The Expo Committee, under Chair Ann Louise Budd, continues to confirm new information about the 2016 33rd Annual Michigan Horse Council's Michigan Horse Expo®, which will be held during March 11-13, 2016, at the MSU Livestock Pavilion, in East Lansing. Feature of the Saturday evening program will be a Freestyle Reining Invitational Competition, co-ordinated by Bill Thomas Jr., of Bill Thomas Performance Horses. The event will feature twelve riders, each presenting a reining program choreographed to music either with, or without, costumes. Since each presentation will be different, though each must perform certain reining maneuvers, this will be a thrilling program for both competitors and the audience. Exhibiting in the competition will be: Kaslin Guerne, Lisa Guerne, Bill Thomas Jr., Calla Thomas, Leslie Darrow, Jeanne Hugo, Beckey Worden, Gene Munger, Trevor Walton (with two horses), Amanda Bailey and Jarid Walton. Chad has also published numerous articles, has conducted various clinics, and presents at various conferences, workshops, and trade shows. Custer's Cowboys will demonstrate Cowboy Mounted Shooting during the Saturday evening program; and Lori Brock, and her trainers Melissa Ashcraft and Jordan Brasser, will entertain audiences with delightful programs featuring her “movie star” Friesian stallions. Her stallion Nitrous is the star of the soon-to-be released movie, The Enchanted Stallion! Jason will also present programs in the Main Arena and Round Pen, titled From Bridle to Bridleless and Advancing Your Equine Behavior Understanding. Other speakers include Angie Golnick, of Equine Essential Oils, who will discuss the use of essential oils for horses and pets. Steve Wilcox, of Datamars, will illustrate the use of micro chips in horses, how they work, universal controls and much more. The MSU Arabians will be featured in a special program on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately their 2015 Champion Sport Horse Mare will not be able to make an appearance, as she is about to foal! Paula Hitzler, MSU Horse Farm manager, assisted by students, will talk about, and demonstrate many of the disciplines that the MSU Arabians have shown in, including Sport Horse competitions. The MSU Arabian breeding program is the oldest, continuous Arabian breeding program in the United States, and has many, many championships and Top Tens in national shows to their credit….and all of the horses are exhibited by MSU students! Once again Friday evening will feature the Michigan High School Rodeo, and the popular Ranch Rodeo will return on Sunday afternoon. The Heritage Hill Farm six-horse Belgian hitch will appear each day in a

thrilling display of the “big” horses. The hitch, along with owners the Micklatchers and Lovelands, will be in the draft horse area each day, so you can visit “up close and personal” with these gentle giants. Michigan Horseshoers will provide interesting and informative sessions on many aspects of hoof care; and Custer's Cowboys will present an exciting program of Cowboy Mounted Shooting as the grand finale of the Saturday evening program. New plans are in the works for both the Trails Area and the Youth Area, with more “handson” experiences planned for both. Any ideas and suggestions you have for these areas are welcome, and volunteers will be needed for both. Horse Association & Club News BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION In last month’s column, we commented on the weather variations that seem to keep us off balance. In November, it was snowing and blowing. In December, we had gentle breezes and temps in the 50's. Until just a few days ago, the mild weather continued but now winter has really descended on us. This morning we have temperatures in the single digits and several inches of snow on the ground. As we reported before, BTRA along with the DNR management at the Brighton Recreation Area have agreed to mount a major trail restoration campaign. We had a productive meeting with the Brighton Unit Supervisor in December and agreed on several initiatives. From our experiences on the trails during the 2015 riding season, we knew there were portions of the trails that had eroded and needed shoring up. We had also identified sections that were possibly in need of re-routing. A few trails which have gone directly up and down hills needed to be converted to switchbacks. These kinds of projects can require the utilization of motorized equipment, excavation work, and the hauling in of dirt and gravel. This is why we are partnering with the DNR on tackling these projects and we are gratified that the management at Brighton seems to be on the same page with us. In order to study the sections of the trails that needed attention first, a survey was planned for just a few days ago, when the weather was still mild and the trails were clear. The Chair of our Trail Maintenance Committee and the Brighton Unit Supervisor were gong to hit the trails in a DNR Gator and get a firsthand look at these sections. Wouldn't you know it? A big snow hit on that very day and the expedition had to be scrubbed. Now we'll have to wait and see when the trails clear. At the most recent meeting of the BTRA Board of Directors, we pretty much finalized our schedule of events for 2016, and it looks like an exciting season is in store for us. We're sticking with most of our tried-andtrue events but will also initiate some new ideas. The schedule will be included in our newsletter, The Hoofbeats Gazette, which will be published in March, and will also be available on the BTRA Facebook. The BTRA website is in the process of being

re-constructed and for the time being, visiting the website will not provide current information on our organization. We hope to have this process completed in the near future. FORT CUSTER HORSE FRIENDS ASSOCIATION Hello Trail Riders! It's a new year and everyone is already thinking about the tack sales and making plans for spring riding. This mild winter has allowed for trail enthusiasts to continue riding when possible. We are excited about the 2016 schedule with our 2 camp out dates this year. The first date is for the Annual Spring Camp Out on May 12, 13, 14 and 15th. This 4 day event will be held at the Whitford Lake event area. It's a beautiful grassy area with picket poles, trees around the perimeter, an outhouse (that the club donated), water and manure removal provided and you can use pens if you wish. There's a wonderful pancake breakfast Saturday morning and a potluck supper that evening. The Annual Fall Equestrian Camp Out will be held on September 15, 16, 17 and 18th. This is in the same place as the Spring Camp Out. In addition to the same schedule of events, we also do a fund raising auction of donated items for a hilarious auction on Saturday night. If you have any items you come across this spring and summer you would like to bring, remember it doesn't have to be horserelated. I think we had a jar of mom's famous peach jam go for $20. Anyone that likes to bring guitars and music to the campfire are always welcome to do so. We will also have our cart trail open for both events. This is a trail on an old paved road and 2-track trail thru a field that's under 3 miles. There are always a few campers who take advantage of this with their ponies. The FCHFA Annual Meeting will be held at the Kal Val Saddle Club on March 19th. Social hour at 3pm, food (potluck) at 4pm and meeting at 5pm. Look on our website for directions. We had a new member attend our last board meeting and it was interesting to find out what a lack of information there is to trail riders who use the Fort Custer trails. Riders do not realize what clubs in general do for their parks. We have just gotten a new sign kiosk for the trail staging area. A list of all our accomplishments and donations to the park will be posted to inform trails users of the hard work and dedication of the FCHFA club. Even the dues paid to an association go a long way to support your trails. Get involved a little bit this year, go to one work day or potluck, you don't have to be a member to help. GREAT LAKES DISTANCE RIDING ASSOCIATION What to Expect at Your First Ride - Part 2 (follow up to January issue) Although you may be new to endurance riding, you may not be new to distance riding and may have lots of experienced with horses. This information is geared for those experienced riders on their first endurance ride and is part two, check out the January issue for part one. Ride Details - Start: Check in with the outtimer 15 minutes prior to ride start. You don't have to be mounted or leave, but you need to let the timer you are planning to ride. Ride Card: Have your ride card out for the arrival timer when coming into vet check. A ziplock bag will keep the card dry. Take it out of the bag for the timer and keep the ride card with you throughout the ride. The veterinarians will record your horse's parameters on the card, and you may have it after the ride is over. Gate into a Hold Procedure: You have 30 minutes after checking in with the arrival timer for your horse's pulse to be checked and considered recovered to pulse criteria to be allowed to continue. Hold time starts after the heart rate is officially down to criteria (typically 64 pulse) in the pulse box. The veterinarian will check your horse's metabolic status and soundness. Check with the out-timer before going back on trail. Finish Criteria: The finish for an endurance ride (50+ miles) is different than for limited distance rides (25-35 miles): Endurance: The first horse over the finish line wins. Horses have one hour to meet pulse criteria. Limited Distance: A horse "finishes" when the pulse is 60 bpm or less. The maximum recovery time is 30 minutes. Horses must stand for veterinary inspection and be considered "fit to continue" according to AERC rules. See AERC Rules & Regulations for details. The "best condition" horse is selected by the veterinarians, based on metabolic and soundness criteria. There is a maximum completion time, which includes hold time or "total elapsed time." Check AERC rules for the distance you are riding. Taking Care of Your Horse and Yourself: Check the other articles available, and the AERC Rider's Handbook, to learn about how to care for your horse during and after a ride. Here are a couple of tips to get you started: Learn to take a pulse at home. Ask your veterinarian or an experienced rider to teach you. If something is wrong, stop and analyze. If you're on the trail: Send word with passing rider. Your horse doesn't want to move? Don't! Get help from a veterinarian. Carry a cell phone if practical, and have the necessary numbers. Make sure the messenger has your name and the horse number/ letter to give to ride management. In camp: Use water to cool a hot horse. EDPP -- Is your horse eating, drinking, peeing and pooping normally? If not, talk to the veterinarian. Take care of yourself so you can take care of your horse! Post-ride: Keep an eye on your horse, making sure he has plenty to eat and drink. Don't travel if you have concerns about your horse's health. Find a veterinarian. The GLDRA ride season has rides all over Michigan, from Marquette to Brighton, and even includes a multi-day ride on the historic Shore to Shore trail. HIGHLAND TRAIL RIDERS ASSOC. 2015 has been an exciting year for the HTRA. • Increased attendance at our events • Completion of the Cedar Creek Trail • Development of a Facebook page • Monthly participation in Saddle Up! • Completion of the West Loop facelift • Reroute of the wet area of the West Loop • DNR Trail Mapping project completed • Successful Art Competition and Exhibit What could be better? HTRA is currently in talks with the DNR regarding the possibility of an equine only campground at the Highland Recreation Area. Other parks are currently dealing with sharing their campgrounds with non-equine participants as the result of overflow. The Highland Recreation Area has only one campground with 25 sites to service all equine and nonequine campers. This arrangement has driven away equine participants. The HTRA is currently in discussion with the DNR to determine the feasability and requirements to establish an equine only campground. Thanks to the members of the PLHA for advocating on our behalf. HTRA was asked for feedback on how well the shared campground system is working and we were quick to gather facts and stories from our members to be presented to the DNR. Stay tuned for more information. The HTRA will definitely need your help and support to pull this off. Our annual goals meeting will be held in February. Highland Recreation Area is a beautiful park and the HTRA is committed to doing everything in its power to make it the best it can possibly be for the equine community. HUNGERFORD TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION Hello HTRA Trail Riders! Many of us are planning our trail riding and camping events for 2016. Hungerford Trail Riders Association plan to have our events available in the March Issue; or published on the website in February. Please check the website for updates. Remember that Hungerford National Forest is not plowed during the winter. If you ride during the winter months, please note the road to the Day Use area may not be accessible depending upon the weather conditions.

The Association relies on the support from our members and volunteers. We will start the year with a general meeting in March to meet new and returning members; organize a spring work bee; review 2016 projects, and assign volunteers to Adopt-A-Trail so trail riders can hit the trails! Again, thanks to our members who have made the Association a huge success; and to those who continue to support in the near future. The Trail Derby Competition will begin in April and conclude in October of each year. Riders who haven't had an opportunity to utilize our trail improvements, check them out in the Spring when you hit the trails. HTRA placed a lifetime picnic table and set up a hitching post on Trail #5 where riders can stop and take a break? In 2014, after the successful installation of a rest area on Trail #21, we were hopeful this rest spot would get the same response. And it did! Many riders have mentioned how nice it was to have a rest area on the east side of the trail system. Check out one or both of the resting stops this year, let us know what you think! Just a reminder, IHTA is planning a winter ride on Saturday, February 13, 2016. We will meet at the ISRA beach parking lot and ride the trails. KTRA will supply the main meat dish and dinner set-up (plates, silverware, etc). Cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Our first spring event will be a Work Bee for clearing up the trails for spring riders and our first weekend camp-out June 3 to 5. MI COMPETITIVE MTD ORIENTEERING is the thinking horse sport. As we gear up for the upcoming competitions we sincerely hope that you choose to join us for a ride or two. If you like trail riding, camping, eating and laughing you will love what we do. The reason we call it the thinking horse sport is that you have to be able to follow a map and set a compass when you find a clue. There is a lot of skill involved, a lot of luck and loads of fun. Although this is a speed competition, we have many riders who complete the course at a leisurely pace. There are year end awards for points earned and you receive points for every plate you find. Nationally these points are rolled over from year to year for the horses and the rider. There are several Michigan riders who have accumulated over 2,000 points. This is quite an accomplishment considering each day ride has only ten plates possible. Many years we have at most twenty day rides. This means these dedicated riders have stayed with our sport for many years and attended most of the rides. I believe that above all, this shows that competing in MiCMO remains fun and challenging ride after ride. Horse Association & Club News PONTIAC LAKE HORSEMAN’S ASSOCIATION Winter is more than half way over! The PLHA is already busy getting our events in order and making plans to help promote the other local trail clubs. Reservations are made and the Rustic Equestrian campground is full. Ms. Susie, our beloved event boss has a wait list for the June Welcome Summer camp weekend. If you want to be included on the wait list, please contact Ms. Susie by email at US4595@frontier.com. We have plenty of parking for rigs of all sizes, if you want to just join us for the day festivities. The PLHA is looking forward to helping our neighboring trail clubs this year by promoting their events to our membership and trying to attend as many as we can. PLHA board members Sally Oberg and Caryn Robinson attended the January 20th, ETS meeting in Lansing. Although recommendations were made regarding shared horse camps and exclusive use horse camps, the discussion was tabled. The ETS will look to revisit those recommendations in March. This years speaker will be Anke Lendeckel - Founder, Owner and Practitioner at Nature's Rehab, LLC. Anke has been a horse lover and dressage competitor for more than 25 years, beginning in Germany and continuing on to the United States. Anke has a Bachelors Degree in Agriculture and a Masters degree in Animal Science from the University of Goettingen in Germany. She is a certified equine and canine massage therapist, a certified equine and animal adjuster. Anke is certified level 1 in the application of photonic therapy and a level 2 Reiki practitioner. With an emphasis on holistic healing she helps

animals recover from all types of injury and illness and has an uncanny ability to identify the core issue that is at the root of the symptoms being exhibited. Anke is continually asked to attend the Novi Horse Expo and the Grand Rapids Winterfest as a clinician. Horse owners from all over bring their horses to Anke's barn, Nature's Rehab, for rehabilitation therapies. She also travels the state to conduct clinics at barns. At the Centreville show, ALL open halter classes will be split Jr. & Sr. Other important dates to post on your calendar include the Michigan Horse Council Stallion Expo March 11-13, the WMAR Red, White and Blue show at Mason will be June 4 & 5, the WMAR State Show at Centreville will be July 16 & 17, and the Sizzler Show that we co-host with the MApHA will be August 6 & 7, 2016. Speaking of shows, it appears that 2016 will be our last year with our fabulous show office team of Brad & Kyle (and, sometimes, Julie Dopp). The WMAR, as well as the MApHA have started the hunt for someone to run our show offices starting in 2017. Please, let us know if you'd be interested in doing this. Ron will fill out the Memorandum of Understanding and YSTRA will become a Friends Group. Trail Report: 4 mile trail has been cleared the 6 mile trail still needs to be cleaned. The 9 mile is now open to horses. Camp layout: Committee met on January 13th to create new layout plans. Plans were submitted to the DNR for approval and turned down due to low camp usage numbers. Tuesday, January 26th there will be a hearing to allow ORV's to use the county game area roads for recreation. Please attend this meeting and let them know we do not support ORV's riding the game area roads, a section of the 9 mile trail is on the road which ORV's will be using. January 28th there will be an open house to get the public input on a new draft General Management Plan for Yankee Springs Recreation Area. Alfalfa and the Insulin Resistant Horse – The True Story By Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D. Alfalfa can be an excellent addition to most horses' diets, even for those who are insulin resistant (IR). I often recommend feeding it because it boosts the overall protein quality of a grass-hay diet and, in general, enhances the horse's muscle tone, immune system, and overall health. But some people just don't want to feed alfalfa; they believe it causes laminitis. And after years of working with horses, it appears that it may, in fact, lead to laminitis in some horses. I found this to be very puzzling since alfalfa is low in sugar and starch, even lower than most grass hays. Its high protein content, however, makes it more caloric, which can be a problem for IR horses who need to lose weight. But I always included some, albeit a small amount. Nevertheless, there appears to be something about alfalfa that troubles some IR horses. After giving this considerable thought, I believe I can shed some light on why this may be the case. There are two plausible reasons, both leading to excess blood glucose and the concomitant secretion of insulin: 1. Excess protein in the diet 2. Preservative often sprayed on alfalfa hay

bined in a very specific order to produce the protein needed by that particular tissue (e.g., blood, lungs, heart, liver, skin, bones, joints, etc.). There are 22 amino acids, of which ten are considered essential -- they cannot be produced within the horse's body or they cannot be produced in adequate quantity to meet the horse's need. For a protein to be of high quality, it must contain all of the essential amino acids in proper proportion. Plant protein sources are potentially limiting in the essential amino acid, lysine. When lysine is low, protein synthesis comes to a halt. The National Research Council (NRC) has established lysine requirements for all horses. As of yet, requirements for the other nine essential amino acids have not been quantified, though recent research has shown that threonine may be the second limiting amino acid. To ensure your horse has an ample amino acid pool in his bloodstream from which to synthesis proteins within his body, it is best to feed a variety of protein sources to improve the quality while not overdoing the quantity. Commercially fortified feeds often include a variety of ingredients to create quality protein. If you'd like to do it yourself, table 1 offers suggestions on alternative whole foods that can be incorporated into a grassbased diet. Protein quantity becomes a problem when

Excess protein - quality vs quantity All proteins consist of long, branched chains of amino acids. Upon digestion, amino acids are free to enter the blood stream and travel to individual tissues, where they are recom-

the horse is overwhelmed with amino acids. If large amounts of protein are consumed beyond the horse's need to replace and repair body proteins, the excess amino acids cannot be stored for later use. Instead, they

are destroyed. The metabolites of amino acid degradation can potentially lead to excess glucose in the blood. Here is how it happens: Inside the liver, an amino acid is broken apart into two pieces – an amino group and an organic acid. The amino group quickly becomes ammonia and is converted to urea, which is then excreted from the body in the urine. The organic acid has several pathways it can take: (1) It can be burned for energy (especially if the diet is not high enough in calories to meet energy needs); (2) It can be converted to body fat (if the diet is too high in calories); or (3) It can be converted to glucose. It's this third path that potentially causes problems for the IR horse. Once glucose is produced, the pancreas secretes insulin to allow glucose to enter the cells and store body fat. Elevated insulin can create inflammation with the feet and the IR horse is particularly vulnerable because his insulin level is already elevated. Alfalfa hay can contribute to excess protein It is easy to overwhelm the horse with too much protein when feeding alfalfa hay because on average, alfalfa has more than twice the amount of protein as grasses. Individual grass and alfalfa hays will vary significantly; therefore it is always best to have your hay analyzed. It is important to realize that excess protein from any source can lead to excess insulin secretion. Alfalfa hay is generally fed in much larger quantity than adding a whole food such as alfalfa pellets, split peas, or hempseeds (see table 1), making it appear as though it is the alfalfa that is the culprit. Let's look at a hypothetical example: Pepper is an adult Quarter Horse. He is overweight – 1200 lbs (550 kg). He's been diagnosed with insulin resistance and has already suffered once from laminitis. He is lightly active. According to the NRC, his minimum protein requirement is 770 grams per day. Since the overweight, IR horse has much inflammation in his system (both body fat and insulin are highly inflammatory), tissues throughout the body can be damaged. Protein is needed to help repair and maintain tissues. Consequently, it is reasonable to add to the NRC requirement. Ten percent is a sensible amount to add, bringing the protein requirement up to 847 grams per day. Pepper's cool-season grass hay has been WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Acetate is utilized by many tissues including the heart, muscles, and the brain. Butyrate provides energy for the cells that line the hindgut epithelium. Propionate is a major precursor toward glucose production through a process known as gluconeogenesis. And that's a problem for the IR horse. Once propionate is absorbed and metabolized, it is converted to glucose! So when you feed alfalfa that has been treated with propionic acid, you are essentially increasing your horse's blood glucose level, just as you would if you had fed a hay with a large amount of sugar and starch. Increased glucose leads to increased insulin. And the rest is… well, you get the picture. Talk to your alfalfa hay producer. If the hay has been sprayed with propionate, and excess glucose is a concern for your horse, do not feed this hay. In areas of the country where humidity is not an issue, alfalfa is not likely sprayed with propionate. But it is always worth checking. Bottom Line Too much protein can be problematic for the IR horse and it is easy to exceed the horse's protein requirement when adding alfalfa hay. Alfalfa itself is not the issue, but rather, its contribution to the protein content of the entire diet. Since protein quality is important, consider adding smaller amounts of alfalfa hay or add different protein sources to better stay within limits. The crude protein content is 8%. After being allowed to self-regulate through free-choice feeding, his grass hay consumption averages 22 lbs per day. To boost his protein quality, Pepper's owner adds 5 lbs of alfalfa hay per day, which has been analyzed to contain 20% crude protein. Protein intake is calculated as follows: GRASS HAY: 22 lbs X 454 g/lb X .08 = 799 grams ALFALFA HAY: 5 lbs X 454 g/lb X .20 = 454 grams Total: 799 + 454 = 1253 grams. 1253 grams significantly exceeds his protein requirement. Pepper's owner decides to remove the alfalfa hay. To offer a variety of protein sources, she replaces the hay with 2 cups alfalfa pellets and 1 cup of split peas: Now the protein intake looks like this: Grass hay: 799 grams Alfalfa pellets: 2 X 21 grams = 42 grams Split Peas: 2 X 24.6 grams = 49.2 grams Total: 890.2 grams Interpretation: The protein content of the first diet is too high because of added alfalfa, which could contribute to elevated insulin secretion. However, alfalfa, in and of itself, is not necessarily the issue. The issue is too much protein. By removing the alfalfa hay and replacing it with a small amount of alfalfa pellets and split peas, the protein quality is improved while keeping the overall content close to the requirement. Here's another real issue with alfalfa – Propionic acid Alfalfa is often sprayed with buffered propionate (also known as propionic acid) to retard spoilage if baled during wet or humid conditions. This preservative not only reduces mold, but it also decreases drying time in the field, thereby diminishing the potential for leaf loss from harvesting and providing more baling flexibility. Baling can begin in the humid early morning hours and can continue later into the evening, allowing greater acreage to be harvested. Not considered to be harmful, propionate is one of three volatile fatty acids (VFA) naturally produced by the hindgut bacteria during hay fermentation. The other two VFAs are acetate and butyrate. These VFAs are a significant energy source for your horse.
