Saddle Up! Magazine News Briefs ACTHA's New “In Hand Division” Inspired by Parelli Natural Horsemanship In keeping with ACTHA's expanded mission of better horsemanship and improved educational opportunities for their participants, they are pleased to announce their new In Hand Division in Arena Obstacle Challenges (AOC's), inspired by a partnership with Pat and Linda Parelli. ACTHA embraces the goal of Parelli Natural Horsemanship, which is to help raise the level of horsemanship worldwide, for the benefit of horses and the people who love them. Pat and Linda have graciously provided educational materials and judging criteria, and have generously shared how developing skills and partnership in-hand leads to a better riding experience for horse and rider. The In Hand Division will be available to ACTHA members only. Obstacles must be performed on lead, and all participants are judged on partnership and execution of the obstacle from the ground. Participants may choose to enter this class/division either as a stand-alone entry, or in addition to a mounted division. Judging criteria developed in partnership with Parelli Natural Horsemanship focuses on a willing partner and good communication skills with the horse. All equines can compete, including minis, ponies, donkeys, mules and horses. All styles of ground work are welcome and encouraged; it is the performance and partnership that is being judged. ACTHA'S mission: To create an enjoyable venue showcasing the wonderful attributes of the great American trail horse, and granting them the recognition they so richly deserve. To create a registry open to all breeds and a point designation system that will stay with each horse for its lifetime, thereby adding to their value and distinction. To create and enable humane treatment and employment options for horses in need. For more information on ACTHA, please visit www.actha.us. For information on Parelli Natural Horsemanship, visit www.parelli.com. ASPCA Awards $50,000 to Winners of ‘Help a Horse Day’ Contest Seven equine rescues receive grants to recognize their efforts to protect horses. The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today revealed the seven winners of the 2015 ASPCA Help a Horse Day contest, a nationwide grant competition for equine rescues and sanctuaries to raise awareness about the yearround work they do to save and care for at-risk ©2015 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • JULY 2015

horses. The three grand prize winners received $10,000 each, while the runners up were awarded $5,000 to support their ongoing efforts to protect horses. The winning groups include: $10,000 Grand Prize Winners: All About Equine Animal Rescue, El Dorado Hills, California Horses of Tir Na Nog, San Diego, California The Pegasus Project, Ben Wheeler, TX $5,000 Prize Winners: Freedom Hill Horse Rescue, Owings, MD Horse Haven of Tennessee Inc., Knoxville, TN Livestock and Equine Awareness and Rescue Network (LEARN), Meggett, SC RVR Horse Rescue Inc., Riverview, FL “In only its second year, the ASPCA Help a Horse Day celebration has grown to include even more groups, and we are thrilled to see the energy and effort that went into engaging their communities and spreading their message about how to protect horses,” said Jacque Schultz, senior director of the ASPCA Equine Fund. “The winning rescue groups embody the spirit and hope behind ASPCA Help a Horse Day and we are pleased to award them these grants to help pay for the vital services they provide every day of the year.” More than 100 equine rescue groups held events across 33 states during the weekend of April 24-26, and the winners were selected based on the creativity of their events, as well as their success engaging their local communities. This year's winning events included a Ponypalooza event for families with games and prizes, which also featured members of the U.S. Air Force and local Boy Scout troops engaging in a shelter construction project; a family carnival with pony rides and a “Muggin' with the Mule” photo booth; the creation of a Help a Horse Posse and Sponsorship program that allowed community members to sponsor horses; and Dancing for the Horses, which paired local celebrities w/professional dancers to compete in honor of a rescued horse. One group even hosted an aviation festival in keeping with their theme of giving rescue horses their wings. Participating rescues also worked to recruit new volunteers, expand their support base, collect donated supplies, and find homes for adoptable horses. ASPCA Help a Horse Day is celebrated annually on April 26 – a date chosen for its significance to the ASPCA's long history of horse protection. In 1866, ASPCA founder Henry Bergh stopped a cart driver from beating his horse, resulting in the first successful arrest for horse mistreatment on April 26 of that year. (20)

The protection of horses has been a core part of the ASPCA mission ever since, which includes supporting equine welfare legislation, public advocacy, professional development, horse rescue, and targeted grants. In addition to the grants contest, the ASPCA also launched a petition on TakePart.com, which has generated over 24,000 signatures, urging the U.S. Congress to pass a federal ban on horse slaughter. Each year, approximately 150,000 American horses are purchased and trucked to Mexico and Canada to be slaughtered for human consumption. The vast majority of these horses (92 percent, according to the USDA) are in good physical condition and could go on to lead productive lives in loving homes. Horse slaughter is especially inhumane because horses, skittish by nature, are extremely difficult to render unconscious before slaughter. About the ASPCA® - Founded in 1866, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) is the first animal welfare organization in North America and serves as the nation's leading voice for animals. Purina Animal Nutrition has once again pledged up to $150,000 in free feed to equine rescue shelters through its continuing partnership with A Home for Every Horse, a program dedicated to finding homes for horses in need of adoption or fostering. For the fourth consecutive year, Purina has pledged a donation of at least $125,000. Western Dressage Association of MI Spring Moon Farm hosted the first of 3 dressage clinics with Sue Hughes on June 13. We had 5 riders and lots of auditors. Sue has WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Saddle Up! Magazine News Briefs been teaching at our farm for about 7 years now, two to three times a year. I enjoy her teaching style, her keen eye and her knowledge of riding and biomechanics of movement seems endless. There were two morgans, a thoroughbred, a warmblood/thoroughbred cross and a morgan/ walker cross. This made for an interesting lesson series. One of the things that is so great is that Sue goes back to the basics, getting the horse in the corridor of the aids. Straight from the withers out to the head. Not straight? Where is he crooked? Then you fix it. A crooked horse cannot be over his back. Heard that a lot. Since the riders were at different levels, starting at the basics is good. Then you can move on from there. Using your thighs to steer is a fairly new concept to me. And it works. Following seat, following elbows a new mantra. Horses aren't tables. They move. Follow the movement in your seat, left seat bone, right seat bone. Allow. Follow the motion in the reins. I like to think of having weights in my elbows so I can keep my arms to hands softer. At our lunch break, we had a Q & A session. Every attendee had questions and it's not often

you have “face time” with an instructor. A popular question is what the heck is a half halt and where do I buy one? Then back to the arena for the afternoon session. Sue Hughes will be back on July 25 and on September 13. Contact Diane Kaser at dhorse46@gmail.com and I will mail you a registration form. Dressage training really is for every horse and every rider. Start with the basics, build a solid foundation and the sky’s the limit! Like all other disciplines offered at USPC Championships, members will compete on teams. Teamwork is a fun and important part of Pony Club competitions. Incorporating

Beginners Guide To Sewing Show Clothes RHINESTONES For the purposes of this book, no distinction has been made between the terms “rhinestone” and “crystal”. AB RHINESTONES: Aurora Borealis – picks up and highlights surrounding colors and lights. ACRYLIC RHINESTONES: “Plastic” rhinestones. Low cost but lack the reflection qualities of other rhinestones. AUSTRIAN CRYSTALS: Generally marketed under the brand name Swarovski™ – Considered the brightest and highest quality rhinestone. Swarovski crystals typically have two more facets (cuts) that create their extra brilliance. BEDAZZLER™: Plunger style device for affixing both rim and Tiffany settings for rhinestones. BEJEWELER™: Electric device for heating and applying hot affix rhinestones. Also marketed under various brand names. COLOR RHINESTONES: Colored crystal or colored crystal AB. CRYSTAL RHINESTONES: Clear rhinestones. CZECH GLASS RHINESTONES: Rhinestones cut from glass. Economical but lack the luster of Austrian crystals. FLAT BACK: Requires the use of rim sets, Tiffany sets or glue to affix to garment. Rim and Tiffany sets require a Bedazzler™ or GeMagic™ to affix. GENERIC RHINESTONES: Somewhat inconsistent in sizing but very shiny with good hot affix glue. GeMagic™: Plunger style device for affixing both rim and Tiffany settings for rhinestones. GLUE: Any flat back rhinestone can be affixed with glue designed for both fabrics and rhinestones. Suggested glues: Gem Tac™, Fabri-tac™, E6000™. Check label for suitability to your project and for garment care instructions. HOT AFFIX: Crystals with heat activated glue. Hot affix crystals require the use of a Kandi Kane™ or Bejeweler ™. Certain hot affix crystals can be set with a household iron. HOT AFFIX WAND: Electric device for heating and applying hot affix rhinestones. Sold under various names. All images copyright KandiCorp Inc. ©2015 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • JULY 2015

RHINESTONE SIZING: Rhinestones are measured by “ss” – a conversion from metric “cc”, with the smaller the number representing the smaller stone sizes. 16 ss = approx. 5 rhinestones per inch 20 ss = approx. 4 rhinestones per inch 30 ss = approx. 3 rhinestones per inch RIM SETS: Metal rims with prongs. The rim sits around the crystal on top of the fabric, with prongs that go down through the fabric and crimp on the underside of the garment. They are affixed with a plunger style device such as the Bedazzler™ or GeMagic™. TIFFANY SET: Metal rims with prongs. The base of the rim is on the underside of the garment. The prongs come up through the garment and crimp around the rhinestone. They are affixed with a plunger style device such as the Bedazzler™ or the GeMagic™. TRANSFER SHEETS: Clear vinyl sheet with a sticky adhesive on one side. Holds rhinestones in specific pattern until applied to garment by using household iron. Must use hot affix rhinestones. Some pre-made appliques can be purchased which use this technique. Follow manufacturer’s directions for using transfer paper or pre-made appliques. ZIPPERS Chap Zippers: Chap zippers are heavy duty, separating metal zippers. Be sure that you purchase one way separating zippers – not the two-way like is used in winter jackets. There are two basic “weights” to chap zippers. In my opinion, the #5 metal zipper is appropriate for ultra suede soft chaps. I find the #10 to be too heavy for this weight of ultra suede. The #10 metal zipper should be used for ultra suede high performance and for any leather chap. If you are making children’s pleather chaps, or “throw away” chaps, then the heavy-duty plastic sports zippers are a feasible choice. But this is only because you do not expect to get more than one seasons use out of the chaps. If you expect to resell the chaps, then use metal zippers. Some fabric and/or commercial stores will have some lengths of the metal zippers available. If you cannot find them locally, then you will need to purchase from a fabric/ show clothing supplier or from an online zipper retailer. Invisible Zippers: Invisible zippers, as the name implies, are zippers that appear to be (34)

unidentifiable from the rest of your finished product. Unlike general or all purposes zippers, invisible zippers are inserted into a seam with no “lap” or top-stitching. Some sewing machines require a specialty sewing foot for applying invisible zippers. Rhinestone Zippers: Rhinestone zippers are best purchased from stores and websites that specialize in these types of zippers. You will sometimes find rhinestone zippers in commercial fabric stores. However, you need to be sure that they are the length and separating or non-separating style that you desire. In rhinestone zippers, the “teeth” of the zipper are the actual rhinestones. They create a very nice finish to certain fabrics and styles. Rhinestone zippers are available in a variety of lengths and stone sizes. Choose a stone size that complements your fabric without overwhelming it. Shirt, Jacket, and Pant Zippers: Currently, stores are limiting the types of zippers that they offer for sale. Most separating zippers over 12 inches long are made from heavy duty plastic. The zippers are good quality, but they seem bulky and at times are “heavy” for the lycra fabric. Additionally, the heavier plastic zippers do not seem to “lay” smoothly when the garment is worn. Coil zippers, also referred to as formal wear zippers, are an excellent choice for show clothing. The #3 size is available in multiple colors and works well in both shirts and jackets. The wonderful thing about pant zippers is that they are available at almost any store that sells fabric. A standard 7-inch or 9-inch all-purpose zipper is perfect for pants. Continued next month. An excerpt from the book:

Horse Association & Club News BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION In the last few columns, we’ve talked about the passing of winter, the coming of spring, and the anticipation of the summer season. Well, summer is finally here! And, to put it mildly, everybody at Brighton is overjoyed. Although we’ve had a fair amount of rain, the weather has been wonderful and there have been plenty of opportunities to enjoy our trails. Both BTRA members and visitors have been arriving in good numbers and this is all documented in our sign-in sheets. When we came up with this idea several years ago and constructed our sign-in station, this was considered an innovation. Now, it’s an established practice at a number of equine recreation areas around the state. Our major event in May, the “Celebrate Spring” Ride, came off as scheduled. The prediction of rainy weather kept some people away but there were plenty of hardy folks who showed up and lo and behold, not one drop of rain fell. One again, Mother Nature was on our side. After the ride from the Brighton Rec staging area to the home of our host, Sue Charleville, we enjoyed a delicious meal and then got down to business. The business was our Annual Meeting, which we held in conjunction with this event. This was the first time we’ve done this and it looks like it was a good idea. After reviewing our programs for the upcoming season and discussing a number of issues, we held our annual vote on Board members. Our Bylaws stipulate that members of our nine-member Board serve staggered terms. Four members are up for election/reelection one year and five members the next year. This year, we had four members up for reelection and one vacancy to be filled. The four members whose terms were ending were all reelected: Patti Blossom, Sue Charleville, Mark Delaney, and Russ Spicer. The vacancy was filled by Penny Wilson and we’re very happy to have her join us. So, we now have a full complement of Board members and are looking forward to a productive year. The rest of the summer will be devoted to fun. We don’t have any major events scheduled until early August but smaller organized rides are still planned. And, of course, many of us will be hitting the trails for informal rides at every opportunity. As always, visitors to Brighton are welcome – both for day rides and camping.

FORT CUSTER HORSE FRIENDS Hello Trail Riders! Summer trail riding and hay season is here finally! We've been getting too much rain in our area to take much hay down. Hopefully, we'll get a stretch of sun soon. That leaves a lot of time between the rain to get camping in around the state. Get out and go somewhere you haven't been before and beat the fly season. Try to put our Annual Fall Equestrian Campout September 17,18, 19 and 20th on your ride schedule. This is always a wonderful time, this year being 4 days of camping at the Whitford Lake event area. It's a grassy area with picket poles, outhouse, water for your horses and trailer for manure removal. There will be a pancake breakfast and potluck dinner on Saturday. Also on Sat., our famous auction fundraiser with our own DarylAnn as our comic auctioneer. Laughs are never ending at the end of a fantastic supper with campfire and music in the evening. Bring an instrument if you play, to join others that might be there to play. You are also welcome to put pens or electric corrals up for your horses in this area. We also have our trail open for carts and buggies for this event This campout is a great time to come explore our beautiful trails of 20 plus miles of trails. There are 6 water crossings, lovely lake views, prairie grasslands and cool woods to ride along the trails. Our trails are groomed by the club and are user friendly for all ages. Go to our website at www.fchfa.org for more details. An upcoming event after the campout has been scheduled on September 26th with the 27th as a rain date. This is a obstacle and desensitizing clinic given by Tim Scarberry from Windwalker Farms that will be held at the Whitford Lake event area. The clinic itself will be for 6 horses and owners, members only, for $75. Auditors welcome for $10 for members and $15 for non-members with kids free. Call Toni H. at 269-781-9688 to sign up for this clinic. Come and audit and help make this a success! I'll leave this news with something interesting going on since last year at our Park. Our turtles have been being tracked and monitored by a group within the recreation area. The turtles have little radio transmitters glued on their shells so they can be tracked. We have been notified by the Park that several turtles have nests in the trail-head area in the sand and gravel hills. We have ©2015 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • JULY 2015 (48)

been asked to stay in the trail-head parking area and on the trails to avoid destruction of the nests. You might see college kids out with radio trackers looking for our turtles when you ride, just to answer any curious questions! Any other questions, please call Nancy at 269-967-3613. GREAT LAKES DISTANCE RIDING ASSOCIATION Is Distance Riding Calling to You? Perhaps you are looking for a new challenge for you and your horse, a deeper relationship and a better understanding of horse and rider fitness. Do you regularly want to keep riding when all of your friends have had enough and are you ready to join up with some likeminded folks? Does an equine sport where your competitors remain welcoming, helpful, and supportive sound inviting? And maybe it's time to be rewarded for all of those hours you spend in the saddle. GLDRA can help you meet all of these goals and so much more. Our mantra is "To Finish is to Win" and many horse and rider teams ride for the mileage, and not to cross the finish line first. Distance riding can be for any breed and many breed organizations have their own distance award programs in addition to what you can earn from GLDRA, UMECRA and AERC. If awards are not your thing, but a truer relationship with your horse is, there is nothing like spending hours and miles together, depending on each other, to build that bond. GLDRA offers rides that are 10-75 miles in length complete with veterinary supervision. Most of our rides offer both Endurance/ Limited Distance and Competitive Trail with the exceptions of Brighton which offers competitive only and Huron River which offers LD/Endurance only. We also have ready and willing mentors all over Michigan waiting for your questions. Our ride season has started and continues on with a ride in the Upper Peninsula July 18-19. Head to Limestone, MI, and ride the incredibly scenic northern section of the Grand Island trail in the Hiawatha National Forest on our Grand Island North ride. Rides of 30 and 55 miles are available. August 2-8 will find you traveling from Oscoda to Empire, MI if you join us for the magical Shore to Shore ride. Ride one day, ride a few or ride them all, it's up to you and WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Join us for this ride August 22nd with distances of 25 and 50 miles, LD and endurance only and a 12 mile AERC Introductory ride for newbies also! HIGHLAND TRAIL RIDERS ASSOCIATION We want to take this opportunity to thank all those who attended the May 17, 2015 event “Tour the Trails of Highland.” The event was a huge success! We had a record high attendance and signed up many new members. Parking actually became an issue for the first time. Rest assured we will come up with a traffic flow plan for future events to ensure an easy in and out for all. Rain put a damper on camping in the days prior to the event but held off the day of the ride. Thanks again to all of those who attended. We hope you can join us at our future events: Horseshoe Hunt – Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015 Cider Ride - Saturday, October 10, 2015. HUNGERFORD TRAIL RIDERS Hello Trail Riders!! As usual, we will have a lunch at both staging areas for riders. Last year our combined ride raised over $1,200 for the Hay Bank. This year we are asking that you come out again and help us help the horse community in Michigan. Our next Kensington Board Meeting is Tuesday, July 7 at 7:00 at Berwyck Saddle Club. We encourage all our members to come to the meetings and give input. We would love to hear from you on what works; what doesn't ; what events you would like to see, etc. We would like you to have a voice in activities as riders and volunteers. If you are out and about on the trails and you see a problem, don't forget to report it on our website at www.kensingtontrailriders.org. See you on the trails! MICHIGAN COMPETITIVE MOUNTED ORIENTEERING With four ride weekends behind the MiCMO group, the season is well under way. The last two rides added some challenging rainfall to a sport that can already be difficult. Congratulations to the riders who persevered and found the plates despite the weather. Hopefully the ride scheduled for DBarD Ranch on July 25th and 26th will be blessed with clear skies. That seems so far away from the time that I am writing this article but we all know that summer events are come and gone WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Horse Association & Club News MiCMO, cont. before we know it. A great big thank you goes to the Michigan Competitive Mounted Orienteering family for showing their support in a huge way to Horses for Hope. Greg & Linda Weirauch did a wonderful job as usual at putting on their annual CMO to help support their organization, Horses for Hope. They give riding lessons and/or horse time to children who are undergoing treatment for childhood cancer. Forty riders braved the wet weather and through their generosity and donations about $1,000 was raised to help these kids. Mark your calendars for the first Saturday in October for the annual Chemo Kid Day and watch kids whose lives are anything but normal, feel the joy of time spent with the horses. If you are able or interested in helping out in anyway to support Horses for Hope please give Greg a call at 810-659-2151. Please, if you know a family who is fighting this terrible disease take the time to be there for them if you can. After helping these families through horses for fifteen years, Greg says the best thing you can do is be there for them. Through listening, babysitting, meal prep, day to day support and kindness you will learn what difference you can make. A great big thank you to everyone who goes out of their way to make someone’s life better. Thank you Greg and Linda for showing us how it’s done. Make your reservations early for DBarD the last weekend in July. You can be part of this wonderful family of riders and share the trails, good food and lots of laughs. If you need more information about this ride contact Val Kadzban at KadzbanVal@ aol.com or 616-560-2494. Hope to see you on the trails!

Their exciting performance was a show-stopper which caused many to stop in at our booth to meet both. Chuck Fanslow won the grain raffle (he bought lots of tickets) and a lucky horse woman won the hay bag full of goodies. It was noted that the DVDs that we played continued to attract visitors also. All in all, it was a fun time! We may be considering a different item to raffle off at the 2016 expo. The MFTHBA/MFTA/MTRA Nat’l. Trail Ride is set for Sept. 5-28 across northern MI. That’s my mare on the cover! I’m Barbara Delisi and she’s Traveling Spirit, a registered Missouri Fox Trotting Horse. Before she was mine, I’d only been riding for about 5 years. I started at Amazing Wings Thera-peutic Riding Center in Goodrich, MI, to benefit my balance and for therapy after losing my lower left leg in a motorcycle accident. Thanks to Judi Pearce, Kelly Barry and Barbara Oprea, I not only gained more confidence and overall balance and core strength, but I fell in love with horses and riding. In addition to my lessons at Amazing Wings, I started leasing a horse, Spotless, at Simple Times Farm in Goodrich. After a while, I decided I needed my own horse. A gaited horse was my choice because of the smooth, flowing way of going that they naturally have. Spirit is well-trained and has had a career of trail riding and summer camps. She’s calm and loves grooming sessions and being pampered. I think she’d stand all day just to be brushed! Since I’ve had her, we’ve done a lot of ground work and natural horsemanship training. Good manners and tolerance are extremely important in a horse that works with a handicapped person. For instance, she has to be comfortable with standing extremely still so that I can mount, and it’s from the off side! We ride inside the arena, outside on the trails, you name it. What has also made her a great horse for me is that she’s very healthy and easy to keep. She’s proven to be a great horse for me, but I’m ready to move along and experience other types of riding. Yes, she is for sale. I’m hoping to find her a great home with someone who will appreciate her, let her into their heart and love her as much as I do!
