AHC Announces Hickey Retirement The American Horse Council (AHC) Board of Trustees announced today that James J. (Jay) Hickey Jr., who has served as the president of the American Horse Council since June, 1993, will retire on June 30, 2016 and that a search committee has been formed to select his successor. The AHC represents all segments of the horse industry before Congress and the federal regulatory agencies. “In his quiet and unassuming manner, Jay Hickey closely observed every issue that could have some effect on the American Horse Council's constituents and then provided them with astute guidance for more than two decades,” said Dr. Jerry Black, the chairman of the American Horse Council and the Director of the Equine Reproduction Laboratory and the Equine Science Undergraduate Program at Colorado State University. “He has been a beacon of integrity, a trusted colleague and a good friend to countless people in the horse industry and he has been equally well regarded by Members of Congress and their staffs.” Hickey, who grew up in Washington, DC and is a longtime resident of Chevy Chase, MD, received an undergraduate degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame and a law degree from Georgetown. He joined the American Horse Council staff in 1989 and succeeded the late Rich Rolapp as president in June 1993. During Hickey’s tenure, the AHC has been involved in virtually every major federal law and regulation that affected the horse industry. This includes breeding, racing, showing, health and welfare, and recreation. Under Hickey's direction, new committees were formed to represent specific segments of the horse industry. The AHC also coordinated economic impact studies on the state and national level and was a driving

force behind the formation of the Congressional Horse Caucus, the Congressional Cavalry, the Unwanted Horse Coalition, and the AHC's marketing alliance, known as Time to Ride. “The horse council's success flows from the great support it receives from the horse industry and the hundreds of people who have served as trustees, committee chairs, and committee members,” Hickey said. “It has been a great experience being involved in the horse industry, primarily because of the people I have been able to meet and work with. But now it's time to ride off into the sunset.” The AHC has formed a search committee to identify candidates to succeed Hickey. Support the National Forest Service Trail Stewardship Act Today A June, 2013 study by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that the Forest Service has a deferred trail maintenance backlog that exceeds $500,000,000, and only one-quarter of the agency’s 158,000 miles of trails meet the agency’s standard for maintenance. This maintenance backlog is causing access and safety issues for equestrians and all trail users on National Forests. The National Forest Service Trail Stewardship Act of 2015 (S.1110) would direct the Forest Service to take several key actions to help address the trail maintenance backlog. These actions include development of a national strategy to expand the use of volunteers and partners in National Forest trail maintenance and creation of a priority trail maintenance program to identify and direct resources to areas with the greatest need for trail maintenance. This bill is strongly supported by the American Horse Council. The AHC urges all recreational riders and trail users to contact their Senators and ask them to support the National Forest Service Trail Stewardship Act of 2015 (S.1110) and to please co-sponsor this legislation.

Walking Horse Owners’ Assoc. Supports AHC Welfare Code The Walking Horse Owners’ Association is the latest organization to endorse the American Horse Council’s (AHC) Welfare Code of Practice. The AHC Welfare Code of Practice is a broad set of principles designed to establish good welfare procedures for organizations to follow to “Put the Horse First.” The code outlines in broad strokes what principles organizations are committed to in breeding, training, competing, transporting, enjoying, and caring for their horses. The code encourages everyone to consider the health, safety, and welfare of their horses in all aspects of their activities, including the social and ethical issues. "The Walking Horse Owners’ Association is proud to stand with the American Horse Council in endorsing their Welfare Code of Practice. WHOA remains committed to the well-being of every Tennessee Walking Horse. One of our primary goals is to encourage every owner to place among their top priorities the health, safety, and welfare of their horses. Our endorsement of the AHC Welfare Code of Practice is an additional step toward accomplishing this goal," said Dee Dee Miller-Sale, President of the Walking Horse Owners’ Association. The Walking Horse Owners Association (WHOA), headquartered in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, was founded in 1976 to represent the interests in all matters pertaining to the sound Tennessee Walking Horse. NORTH AMERICAN TRAIL RIDE CONFERENCE Danamyte Explodes to Take Top National American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC) Award Danamyte, a.k.a. Dana, a bay Arabian mare owned and ridden by Esther Diaguila of Havana, Florida was named the winner of the North American Trail Ride Conference's (NATRC) highest award, the 2015 President's Cup, at the National Convention held February 19-20, 2016 in Reno, NV. The Cup is awarded to the high point horse in the nation. Proudly, Esther says, “Dana is an awesome little mare (only 14.2 h) but with a heart as big as all outdoors. She will go where I ask and do what I ask.” After purchasing Dana, it was touch and go as to whether or not Esther was even going to keep the filly. Dana was so laid back! As Esther explains, “We're talking full Arabian here. All the other Arabians I've owned were full of fire. Dana accepted all her ground training, saddling and mounted training so calmly, without a fuss. Perfect for competitive trail riding. I love it. She does have her moments and opinions. She is a mare, after all.” In their quest for the Cup, they earned the numerous high point awards: Arabian, the Jim Menefee Memorial overall combined horse and horsemanship, lightweight horse, lightweight horsemanship, and lightweight team in their region. They took home a National Championship and the mare's 1,000 mile award. “I couldn't have accomplished all this without the help of my husband, Paul, and my many friends in NATRC. Paul and three others conspired to convince me that Dana and I could do it. We had a lot of fun, some horrendous rides, and even a few scary moments, but I wouldn't have traded it for anything.” A few of their memorable moments could be short stories in their own right. There was the Biltmore ride where she and Patty Lucas were 45 minutes behind the maximum completion time and galloped 16 miles to catch up. And, there was the time Esther watched in her rear view mirror as a fender

and hubcap, torn off the trailer by a blowout, flew through the air at a police car behind them. Some moments were downright funny like finding dead minnows in a shower stall at a camp ground. The greatest moment was handing in her # at the last ride knowing Dana had earned the President’s Cup. NATRC competitive trail rides are challenging, educational, and fun. They are open to all breeds and folks from all disciplines. The judges value the horses’ performance and the riders’ horsemanship. Riders are invited to see what they and their horses can achieve. Sitting Tall Cracker Jack Camp named beneficiary of Jackson Jr. Welfare League's Annual Gala Sitting Tall Cracker Jack Camp has been selected as the beneficiary to receive proceeds from Jackson Junior Welfare League’s Midnight in Paris themed annual Gala which took place on Saturday, February 27 at the Ella Sharp Museum. Sitting Tall Cracker Jack Camp, a Jackson County 4-H Proud Equestrians Program, is a free therapeutic horseback riding program where children with special needs enjoy the challenge of learning a sport that is fun and physically, socially and emotionally beneficial. The Midnight In Paris Gala featured live and silent auctions, dancing and refreshments within the beautiful atmosphere of the Ella Sharp Museum. Sitting Tall Cracker Jack Camp, an all volunteer-run program, takes place on six Saturday mornings between June 18, 2016 and July 30, 2016. Participating youth will learn stable management and horseback riding skills, while provided with an opportunity to overcome the challenge of their disabilities and gain self confidence. Each summer, approximately 24 youth participate in the Sitting Tall Cracker Jack Camp program, assisted by side-walkers and horse owners who volunteer with their calm, gentle horses. Funds raised at the Gala will be used for

Sitting Tall Cracker Jack Camp's operational costs and to refurbish and replace existing equipment. Prize Money Announced for Great American/USDF Regional Dressage Championships The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) and Great American Insurance Group are pleased to announce the prize money for the 2016 Great American/USDF Regional Dressage Championships Series, presented by SmartPak and supported by Merial. Prize money totaling over $180,000 will be awarded at the 2016 Great American/USDF Regional Championships, divided evenly among the nine regions and 35 divisions that are offered, allowing each region to present competitors with over $20,000 in prize money and awards. Champions in each region and division will receive $343 in prize money and an embroidered jacket and gift certificate provided by SmartPak, official supplement feeding system of USDF. Awards Abound at USPC Annual Meeting & Equine Symposium Orlando, FL hosted the 2016 USPC Annual Meeting and Equine Symposium held February 4-7. The over 500 attendees were treated to more than 60 educational workshops, presentations, and interactive learning experiences on a variety of equine topics. Most of the fun was held in the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Orlando. Representatives from 42 Pony Club Regions, including Alaska and Hawaii, were on hand working to improve Pony Club programming for members and future members. Workshops and presentations were well attended, as well as other activities including the Trade Fair, Silent Auction, Research Fair, and Anatomy Room. Friday’s sessions included honoring the inductees into the Academy of Achievement for 2016: Marc Donovan and Linda Zang. Many Pony Club awards were presented at the Saturday morning Meeting of the Corporation. Three clubs received 50 year awards and eight clubs received 25 year awards. Upper Level members received special recognition as nine members were awarded A-level certification plaques. The Brookfield Land Conservation Award was presented to Wasatch Pony Club, Intermountain Region and Run O’ The Mill Pony Club, Lake Shore Region. Milestone Club Anniversaries Honored at USPC Annual Meeting & Equine Symposium Every year at USPC’s Annual Meeting, held February 4 - 7, 2016, clubs are recognized for their dedicated longevity with Pony Club. The Club Milestone Award is awarded when a club reaches either its 25th or its 50th anniversary. This year we had a total of eleven clubs reach a milestone anniversary. During the Meeting of the Corporations on Saturday morning, eight clubs celebrated their 25th Anniversary by receiving a 25 Year Club Milestone Award. Those clubs include; Huntsville Pony Club (Midsouth Region), Mad River Pony Club (New York/Upper Connecticut Region), Mountain Laurel Pony Club (Eastern Pennsylvania Region), Mt. Hood Pony Club (Oregon Region), Norfolk Hunt Pony Club (Central New England Region), Northern Mines Pony Club (Sierra Pacific Region), Saint John's River Pony Club (Sunshine Region), and Timber Ridge Pony Club (North Central Prairie Region). Celebrating even bigger milestones, three clubs were honored this year with the 50 Year Club Milestone Awards. Not everyone is audited in the first place. But most audits of horse owners involve those who have a history of losses with large tax deductions taken against large principal sources of income. Although the horse and ranching industries are big forces in the American economy because they help fund many related industries and workers, the IRS takes a skeptical view towards taxpayers who have a history of losses in these areas. But at the same time, taxpayers who go to the effort of pursuing their cases in IRS Appeals or Tax Court usually can get a better opportunity to have a satisfactory result. It will still be necessary to have some strong evidence that your activity is in-fact conducted in a businesslike manner, and plenty of documentation and witnesses, in order to determine just how you could make a profit in this activity over time. Jurisdiction of US Tax Court By John Alan Cohan, Attorney at Law For most people their encounter with the IRS ends at the audit phase: Taxpayers will often agree to pay whatever the IRS says they owe. In situations where the auditor claims your activity is a hobby, not a business, this can have long-lasting and adverse consequences because deductions against outside income would be disallowed. If you choose, you can appeal an audit determination to IRS Appeals and, if that is not successful, to Tax Court. The IRS is a large bureaucracy, but the procedures are fairly clear in that taxpayers are given ample opportunity, if you follow the procedures, to contest determinations that are made at the audit level. The “philosophy” in IRS appeals, for the most part, is to seek a fair settlement of cases. Often, if you have strong evidence on your behalf, the appeals officer will end up conceding the case in its entirety, and you walk away owing nothing. However, in other instances, a settlement might be based on a percentage that you agree to pay. If a large amount of money is at stake, the appeals proceeding usually requires representation by a tax attorney. The U.S. Tax Court is a Federal court established by Congress to provide a forum in which taxpayers can dispute IRS tax deficiencies assessed against them. This is a court of last resort for taxpayers, if the matter has not been settled in IRS Appeals. In order to file a petition in Tax Court, you must await receipt from the IRS of a “90-day letter,” also known as a deficiency notice. This letter triggers a 90-day period in which you must file a petition or the IRS assess-ment will become final and unappealable. The Tax Court is composed of presidentially appointed judges who are well versed in tax law. Although the Court is physically located in Washington, DC, court sessions are held throughout the country, so that the lawyer who files your case can designate a city convenient to you. The advantage of Tax Court is that you have the opportunity, once again, to settle your case. Your representative must be familiar with the extensive Tax Court rules and procedures. If the case is not settled with IRS counsel, the judge will hear your case. No juries are involved. Depending on the judge, and depending on the strengths of your case, you may or may not win. You will have the opportunity to present witnesses on your behalf, including expert witnesses. The taxpayer usually will be a key witness to testify as to your intentions and expectations in carrying on the activity. You will need to explain your method of record keeping, articulate what the business plan was, what efforts were made to cut down on costs and increase revenue, who was em-ployed as trainers, how decisions were made on acquisition of horses, breeding, racing, showing and selling. If there were setbacks, such as casualty losses or econ-omic downturns, these also will need to be narrated. Some Tax Court judges are more sympathetic than others on the trials and difficulties horse owners face – whether in racing or breeding – to make a profit. ©2016 C & C PUBLISHING, INC. • MARCH 2016

MHC’s MI Horse Expo Features MHSRA Ranch Rodeo Put on your hats and boots, and attend the MHC's MI Horse Expos’ Michigan High School Rodeo Association Rodeo held on Friday, March 11th beginning at 7:00 pm. All contestants participating are members of the MI High School Rodeo Association, along with invited members of the Ontario High School Rodeo Association. Thrill to the excitement of the “rough stock” riders, those riding the Bareback Broncs, Saddle Broncs and BULLS! Gasp at the speed of the barrel racers and pole bending contestants. Remark on the precision of the ropers and cheer for all these youthful contestants! They ride not for cash prizes, but for the Championship Jackets awarded in each event by the MI Horse Expo, plus points towards scholarships offered by MHSRA. What is the MHSRA? It is the Michigan High School Rodeo Association's intent to promote high school rodeo at the state level and encourage eligible students to participate at MHSRA rodeos. The association promotes the highest type of conduct and sportsmanship while at various rodeos. They strive to keep our Western heritage alive and active, while maintaining humane treatment of the animals they participate with. The MHSRA encourages students to further their education after high school with an aggressive Scholarship Program. The MHSRA Senior Division is open to all students in grades 9-12. The Junior High Division is open to all students in grades 6-8. The MI High School Rodeo Association is an affiliate member of the National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA). The National

High School Rodeo Association sponsors an annual National High School Finals Rodeo and National Junior High Finals Rodeo. Participants must qualify through their state rodeo association to qualify for their respective national finals. Ranch Rodeo, Sunday Afternoon For years cowboys have used nothing but a good horse and a long rope to care for animals in the open. These everyday ranch jobs were turned into a somewhat friendly competition, pitting ranch hands against one another. Braggin' rights were considered the ultimate prize. The American cowboy has been a world wide icon since the early 1800s. Today the heritage, values, and traditions of the working ranch are still alive and well. Ranch cowboys are out there living the lifestyle – calving, branding, gathering and doctoring cattle – keeping ranching traditions alive. What is a Ranch Rodeo? A Ranch Rodeo is a team event, with each team consisting of four members. At least one member of a team must participate in each of the events offered. The Michigan Horse Expo Ranch Rodeo is an invitational event. For more information about entries, you can contact Stuart Pletcher at twisted prodeo@yahoo.com. Events may include: Team Branding – when cowboys find a slick hide on the range, it must be branded before a cow thief borrows your calf. Trailer Loading – in cases where an animal needs more attention than can be given in the open, they must be trailer loaded. Having no fences can prove interesting. Ranch Bronc Riding – When the morning air is cool, ranch horses are often a bit fresh. A good cowboy still has to be able to get a day's work done.

Feed Lot Sorting – Cowboys check pens every day for cattle that might need attention or need to be moved. They must remove certain cattle without spilling the whole pen. Stock, personnel and equipment for the Michigan Horse Expo Ranch Rodeo, as well as the Michigan High School Rodeo Association Rodeo is supplied by Twisted P Rodeo Company, LLC. Owned and operated by Stuart Pletcher, which is a family owned and operated working cattle and horse ranch. GREAT LAKES DISTANCE RIDING Is Distance Riding Calling to You? Perhaps you are looking for a new challenge for you and your horse, a deeper relationship and a better understanding of horse and rider fitness. Do you regularly want to keep riding when all of your friends have had enough and are you ready to join up with some like-minded folks? Does an equine sport where your competitors remain welcoming, helpful, and supportive sound inviting? And maybe it's time to be rewarded for all of those hours you spend in the saddle. GLDRA can help you meet all of these goals and so much more. Our mantra is "To Finish is to Win" and many horse and rider teams ride for the mileage, and not to cross the finish line first. Distance riding can be for any breed and many breed organizations have their own distance award programs in addition to what you can earn from GLDRA, UMECRA and AERC. If awards are not your thing, but a truer relationship with your horse is, there is nothing like spending hours and miles together, depending on each other, to build that bond. GLDRA offers rides that are 10-75 miles in length complete with veterinary supervision. All of our rides offer both Endurance/Limited Distance and Competitive Trail options except for the first ride of the season held at Brighton Recreation Area which is a Competitive Trail Ride only. We also have ready and willing mentors all over Michigan waiting for your questions. In CTR, the riders cover a specified distance in a given time. Ride times are at the ride manager's discretion with 25 miles in 4.14 hours, including a 40min vet hold, being the minimum allowed time. CTR's require a rider to maintain a maximum average pace of 5.5-7 mph on the trail. Every horse/rider team starts out with 400 points which is a perfect score and points are deducted from there based on comparisons to the pre-ride observations of fatigue, lesions & muscle soreness. Ride time, lameness, pulse, and respiration are judged against a set scale. The goal is to cross the finish line at exactly the specified time, there is a 10 minute safe window where no points will be deducted and a completion is given up to one hour past the specified time. GREAT LAKES DISTANCE RIDING, cont. LD rides are between 25-35 miles. Endurance rides are those of 50+ miles per day. Total completion time per day (including vet checks) for 25 miles is 6 hours, for 50 miles is 12 hours, and for 100 miles is 24 hours. The LD winner and subsequent placings are determined by the horse that pulses down to 60 bpm the fastest while also being sound at the trot. Endurance ride placings are based on the order of finish of horses that meet the completion criteria for soundness and pulse rate which are set per the vet's requirements for that ride day and who are thus deemed fit to continue. The 2016 season starts with a booth at the MHC Horse Expo March 11-13, come meet us there to learn about distance riding. After that, get ready to ride with us!! The first ride of the season is the Brighton Competitive Trail Ride, April 23-24 offering 15, 25 and 35 mile CTRs, with an optional tutored ride on Saturday. The rest of the GLDRA season has rides all over Michigan, from Marquette to Milford, and even includes a multi-day ride on the historic Shore to Shore trail. CALLING ALL TRAIL RIDERS - It's been over 2 decades since an “EQUINE ONLY” camping weekend was held at the Highland Recreation Area but with your help that's about to change. When the MDNR learned a shared campground was not working at Highland and complaints weren't recently issued because equine campers were not coming, it provided the HTRA with a unique opportunity. The MDNR has given us a challenge to show usage and prove that equine campers will come to Highland if it is designated “EQUINE ONLY”. We need you to help us fill the campground the weekend of May 14, 2016 like never before! Space is limited. Did I mention prizes, 50/50 raffle, poker ride, fellowship, campfires and a pot luck dinner? After the dust settles you can say you were one of the first. How cool is that? I know its cold outside and you don't want to think about camping in May, but if you wait you could miss the chance to be part of some-thing really great. Horse folks are the best people on the planet, so you know rain or shine we are going to have a good time. We have also been granted permission to use the empty field next to the campground for day riders. We changed the day and type of ride to

HUNGERFORD TRAIL RIDERS ASSOC. Hello HTRA Trail Riders! By the time many of you read this article, you will have already hit the trails for short rides. With our unpredictable Michigan weather, trail riding opportunities have been more available than previous years. Many of us are planning our trail riding and camping events for 2016. IONIA HORSE TRAILS ASSOCIATION Hi there! Ionia Horse Trails Association met Saturday, February 13, 2016. We had planned a winter ride for this date, but as you know, it was the coldest day so far this winter - so we have rescheduled. The new ride date is March 26, 2016 - still at the beach parking lot at noon. We plan to head to Applebees’ in Ionia after the ride for a late lunch. KENSINGTON TRAIL RIDERS ASSOC. The Annual General Meeting for the Kensington Trail Riders Association was held February 7 at Berwyck Saddle Club. We were delighted with the huge turnout and appreciate the support you've shown the club. There was a wonderful assortment of food at the potluck and, after full bellies, the President reviewed 2015 successes, 2016 plans, expectations, and events for the organization. Kelly Lamus, Secretary, reviewed the minutes and 2016 dates for upcoming membership drivers. Our Treasurer, Joanna Gawrys, presented the Financial Statement and distributed the club's financial report. Ballots were then passed to members for elections. After club business was concluded, farrier Koren Knox gave a presentation on winter hoof care; removing snowballs from hooves; using borium; riding on pavement; to shoe or not to shoe; abscesses and their causes and treatment; and so much more. Thank you Koren for a fantastic talk and for the time you spent after answering questions. I must give a Big Thank You to Sandra and Ken W along with Jennie P for being the glue that has held Maybury State Park Trail Riders Association together for the past few years. Your dedication and hard work are so very much appreciated! We worked on some details for 2016 Events: Saturday, June 18th, 10am-2pm we will have a “Scrabble Ride” ending with a Potluck. $5 Donation. Saturday, October 1st, 4pm-8pm it will be “Find a Word In The Woods Ride” with a Potluck and campfire to follow. $5 Donation. Both these rides will need a park recreational passport if you are trailering your horse in. Ranger Trevor informs us that there is a Fire Pit in the works for the staging area, with luck it will be ready for our events. We discussed putting some fines on the new gravel staging area which will improve the footing for the horses. We are really excited for this brand new year and the wonderful new improvements that will make your experience at Maybury State Park memorable and enjoyable. HURRY SPRING!

MI COMPETITIVE MTD ORIENTEERING Another Michigan Horse Expo is upon us which means spring and trail riding are just around the corner. We have been working hard here at MiCMO to finalize the ride schedule for 2016 so that everyone can mark their calendars. The first ride of the year will be Spring Break Getaway at DBarD Ranch in Chase. We hope the first week in April is free and everyone can join us on April 7th, 8th and 9th for some serious fun on horseback. Be sure to watch Saddle Up! Magazines’ online calendar as we add each ride for the season. You can also check out our Facebook page. The ride in Chase, MI is about as far north as we are going to travel this year. For anyone near the 131 side of the state, looks like there will be a ride at Silver Creek County Park on June 4th and 5th and Yankee Springs in Middleville, MI on August 5th and 6th. The last ride on the west side of the state will be at Camp Eberhart

in Three Rivers, MI on September 30th and October 1st. There are as many rides scheduled for the east side of the state as well. We are working on definite locations for these rides, but do know that the last ride of the season will be held at Kensington MetroPark in Milford, MI on November 12th and 13th. This ride was a huge success last year and I hope they are again blessed with decent weather. It can be challenging to find white plates if the ground is covered in that white stuff! If you have never tried Competitive Mounted Orienteering this would be a great year to join us. We love having new riders and there is always someone available to share their wisdom of the sport with beginning competitors. This is truly an event that welcomes riders of all ages and disciplines. MI FOX TROTTER ASSOCIATION The Feb. 20th meeting held at Wheel Inn restaurant (St. Johns, MI) was called to order at 11:30 AM by Pres. Kathy Kruch. Those also in attendance were VP Bob Howell, Treasurer Char Ostrom, Sec. Marilyn Mannino, Director Chuck Fanslow, Jan Wolfin, Sandi Roath, George Ostrom, Missy Schafer, Kaylee Fase, new members Harley & Sandy Westdorp (McBain, MI), Karilynn Noppe & Matt Lillie (Jonesville, MI), Harland and daughter, Alora Jones-Fish, (Hastings,MI). A very warm welcome was extended to our new members! Chuck made a motion, which Bob seconded, to accept the minutes of the 1.16.16 meeting w/no errors. All voted in favor, motion carried. Kathy read the nice letter from lifetime member, Maggie Potter who really enjoys hearing about the activities that our association is involved in. Membership update: We currently have 26 paid MFTA members and 21 MFTHBA members! This count includes our members from Illinois, Indiana & S. Carolina. Thank you for your help! The financial report given by Char revealed that we have a positive balance in both savings and checking accounts. Jan made the motion, which Chuck seconded, to accept and file this report. Old Business: The proposed bylaw changes were again reviewed and discussed. They are: Article III (Membership, Dues & Voting Privileges) Section B #4 that the wording should be changed to: Dues for MFTA membership are determined by the membership at the LAST meeting of the year (December). An increase in dues to take effect JANUARY 1ST in the following year. Article IV (Executive Board Of Directors) Section B: (Election and Terms of Office) #1 Nominations for office shall be taken at the OCTOBER meeting. #2 Elections will be held at the NOVEMBER meeting. #5: A director or officer's term shall commence on JANUARY 1ST and run through DECEMBER 31ST-ONE CALENDAR YEAR. **Proposed changes are in italics** Those present discussed considering rejoining the MI Horse Council depending upon the outcomes of the lawsuits that are presently active against Jan and Sandi. Jan is looking into whether it would be proper for our association to donate a sum of money to her and Sandi’s legal defense. A number of members have donated out-of-pocket already. The 2-Year Director position nomination was tabled as Joe Burrill was unable to attend this meeting. Our association has chosen to NOT support this year's MI Horse expo. Instead we are looking into renting a promotional booth and stall space at the Novi Expo in November. Marilyn distributed Ohio Equine Affaire brochures. We are currently searching for a member to bring some of our brochures to this expo in Columbus, Ohio April 7-10. Region 4 Amber Wilson and MFTHBA Promotions Chair, Shelly Robbins, will have a promotional booth there and demo horses too. They want to coordinate with us if someone from our association plans to attend. Let me know ASAP if you plan to go. Rider deposits of $50 toward the $200 clinic fee for the April 30-May1 All Breed Training Clinic in West Branch, MI with Levi Beechy are being accepted. Only nine riders will be taken. check, to Kathy Kruch ASAP to assure a position in this clinic. Auditors can pay their $15 fee when they arrive. Also, Jan Wolfin, will be heading up the very educational “How to Camp” seminar starting at 6 PM Saturday night there. A $10 fee for that will be needed to attend. Let Kathy know if you plan to attend Jan's class so enough handouts can be prepared. Kathy is looking for help with food prep and sales help that weekend. Let her know if you are available to assist! The July 9th Gaited Dressage clinic with Penny Underwood was discussed. Massman Stable in Mason, MI is available that day for a $250 rental fee. Some motivated riders have already expressed an interest in participating. 18 riders can be scheduled for semi-private time slots. Affordable insurance has been found. Selfcontained camping is allowed. Leesa Massman has a very nice indoor arena with a viewing room, restroom facilities and available stalls. Marilyn made a motion, which Missy seconded, to proceed with offering this clinic if it will be profitable to do so. All members voted in favor and motion passed. Penny will teach you movements that you can use on the trail and in Western and English disciplines. She loves to teach all ages and all gaited breeds. Penny and her students have done well in competitions. The cost will be $90 for non-MFTA members and $80 for MFTA members. All stalls (for horse or tack) will be $20/day. Auditor fee is $20 (non-member), $15 for MFTA members. Each bag of shavings will be $7. Please send your $50 deposit (or the total amount) ASAP to Missy Schafer to reserve your spot in this unique clinic. Print the form from our website. New Business: Chuck started a lively discussion about having a group ride at Hungerford. The date chosen is July 23-24. Camping is $15/night for each site or $75 to rent the group camp. PONTIAC LAKE HORSEMAN’S ASSOC. It was over 50 degrees yesterday and the trails were clear and dry! It was nice to get a special nudge in February from Mother Nature that spring is indeed coming and get excited about the upcoming trail events being offered by all the local trail organizations this year. The S.E. Michigan Equine/Horse trail organizations tried to organize their fundraising events on different weekends for 2016, so that everyone could participate and support the individual riding organizations. One of the most exciting opportunities for trail riders is the first in a long time, decades actually. There is an equine only camping event planned at the Highland Recreation Area in May. The PLHA is very supportive of any and all equine related events locally and we are very happy to help the Highland Trail riders with this endeavor. It certainly has had quite a positive response thus far. We hope that this is just the beginning of horse only camping opportunities for the HTRA and Highland Recreation. I also did tell you, we would keep you in the loop regarding the activities going on between the Equine Trail Subcommittee and MDNR. At the January meeting a few equine only and some shared use campgrounds were recommended by the MDNR. Since there was again, some confusion to verbiage in the recommendation it was tabled until the March meeting. So I have nothing to actually report regarding equine campgrounds. I should tell you there are some pretty good folks trying to get things accomplished for the entire horse trail riding community in the State of Michigan on that ETS committee and also beyond that committee. PROUD LAKE TRAIL RIDERS ASSOC. Hello Everyone! At the time of this article, we will have just had our kick off event of the year, our annual banquet with featured speaker Anke Lendenckel. This is sure to be a huge success! As we move into spring we want you to hear a bit about our riding events that we have planned. Saturday, May 21st is our Scavenger Hunt Ride. This ride will consist of riding all of our different trails looking for specific objects. There will be a potluck lunch and a bonfire following this event. Camping will be offered for the entire weekend. After that, on Saturday, June 25th we will have our Obstacle Challenge Ride. This ride will have six challenges on 3.5 miles of trails. Each obstacle will be timed. There will be a potluck lunch following the event and there will be camping available all weekend. Our final event of 2016 will be the Circle Ride. This popular favorite ride is one that we co-host with Kensington Trail Riders. It consists of riding the eleven mile loop that connects the two parks. The proceeds of this ride will go to the Michigan Horse Coalition. Both sites will be offering lunch and Proud Lake will offer a potluck dinner and camping all weekend. The Circle Ride will take place on Sunday, September 25th. WESTERN DRESSAGE ASSOC. OF MI Welcome to the Michigan Train The Trainers™(TTT) Clinic! Registrations are now available at www.wdaatrainthetrainers.org for the Western Dressage Association® of America's (WDAA) Western Dressage Continuing Education Program clinic. The Western Dressage Association® of Michigan (WDAMI) is hosting the TTT clinic at the Nottingham Equestrian Center, 16848 Towar Road, East Lansing, MI 48823. This program offers a great learning experience for both Western and English Dressage riders. Gaits and the bio-mechanics of horses are studied. Rules, tack and attire are discussed. TOPICS: • What is Western Dressage? • Gaits and Movements • Rider Position • Skill Sets – introduction and philosophy of fundamentals • Tests - philosophy, arena, levels, judging • Teaching Western Dressage • Western Dressage Equitation Afternoon Arena Session will take place in an indoor arena at the Nottingham Equestrian Center. Several demonstration riders of varying ability will participate. On the first day, Frances Carbonnel and Cliff Swanson will coach the student riders using the methods discussed in the morning: Skill Sets, Western Dressage Gaits and Movements, Equitation Day 2: Morning Classroom Session Trying Out Your Knowledge Cliff Swanson and Frances Carbonnel will review and critique videos of WDAA tests. Participants will take part in scoring the tests, working on the elements of a group lesson, and much more. Afternoon Arena Session: Participants will apply their skills judging student riders as they perform several levels of the Western Dressage tests.

WESTERN MI APPALOOSA REGIONAL The WMAR would like to welcome our newest board of directors, Marcia Shelhamer & Pam Weakly. We look forward to working with both of you this year. For 2016, we will be offering both Ranch Horse Pleasure as well as Ranch Horse Trail at our WMAR sponsored shows. It was decided that at the June show in Mason, Open Stallion halter classes will be split into Jr. & Sr. with the Mare and Gelding age splits remaining as is. At the Centreville show, ALL open halter classes will be split Jr. & Sr. If you'd like to make a little extra money while showing this summer, sign your favorite show mount up for the WMAR Incentive program. Prize money is given out at the banquet based on the number of points earned in your division throughout the show season. Forms can be found under the “Service Page” on the WMAR website at www.wmarapp.org. Important dates to post on your calendar include the Michigan Horse Council Expo is March 11-13, 2016, the WMAR Red, White and Blue show at Mason will be June 4 & 5, 2016, the WMAR State Show at Centreville will be July 16 & 17, 2016 and the Sizzler Show that we co-host with the MApHA will be August 6 & 7, 2016. Speaking of shows, it appears that 2016 will be our last year with our fabulous show office team of Brad & Kyle (and, sometimes, Julie Dopp). The WMAR, as well as the MApHA have started the hunt for someone to run our show offices starting in 2017. Please, let us know if you'd be interested in running the show office or know of someone who is. 2017 will be our last year at Centreville due to a date conflict. If anyone has a suggestion for another show facility, please let a board member know. We usually need 100-120 stalls, an arena large enough to run our games classes in and the same date. It's getting close to foaling season. YANKEE SPRINGS TRAIL RIDERS ASSOC. Board Meeting Minutes, February 10, 2016 This meeting was held at Sonya & Todd Peters home starting with a Pot Luck meal at 6:00 pm. Ron Walker called the meeting to order at 6:36. Trail Report: The 4 mile and 9 mile have been cleaned, thanks to Carla and Ron Walker. Fat bike tracks were seen on the 9 mile, and a 4 wheeler was seen last summer, so Ron will ask the game area manager for some no wheeled vehicle signs to be put up. DNR Report: Ron Walker and Richard Smith meet with Andru Jevicks, YS DNR Manager to discuss the Memorandum of Understand agreement document to get a better understanding of this agreement and would this change our relationship with the DNR or continue to be the same. Ron and Richard had a few questions for the DNR regarding our financial records being open for their review, if insurance needs would change, and was the Pavilion gifted to the DNR. Over all they felt our working relationship would stay the same with the DNR under the MOU agreement. Richard Smith suggested the Equine Liability Act sign be placed in different areas in the park.

Ron will check with the DNR to make sure this would be ok and see if some signs could be donated from different vendors, about 10 of them. Richard also suggested we add the Equine Liability Act to our signed waivers when we have events. The Horse Camping Only sign will be replaced in the YS campground once the ruling gets to Andru. January 26th Barry county approved ORV's to use Barry County roads, so be careful when you are riding the roads you might encounter ORV's. Euchre Tournament at Scott’s Café Report: This was a big success with 32 players generated $820.00 which was donated to Cancer Families United. MHC: Ron Walker reported on the current situation of the MHC. The ongoing legal battle shows some promising avenues. Skip made a motion to join the MHC for 2016, Carla 2nd. Voted on and approved 9-0. Richard Smith said he would be YSTRA's delegate with John Soper 1st alternate and Skip Burger 2nd alternate. Benches around the community fire pit. Laura Soper suggested we ask vendors to donate a

bench and we would create a sign to attach to the bench, “donated by.” Suzie suggested some people might want to donate a bench “In Memory of.” Skip Burger will check with the lumber yard for the cost of these benches. Ron and Carla will fund the first bench in memory of Gene Flint. Member Call List: Sonya wanted to know the status on the suggestion for Board Members to call YSTRA members for their input and to update them on events. John Dermody was to create a list of questions, this has not been done. Ron Walker suggested instead of calling a Newsletter be sent out, which he is working on, and list the Board Members with their phone numbers and let the members know they can call us with their questions or suggestions. Several members thought the Newsletter might be a better idea than calling members at home. Some input from the membership on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
