Alesandra Seutin Guest Artistic Director (2020-22)
Alesandra Seutin is an award-winning multidisciplinary performance artist and creator, whose focus is exploring movement as a foundation for theatre, media and site-specific works. An inspirational leader with a multifaceted career spanning two decades, she has reached global audiences through her work as an artistic director, choreographer, performer, mentor, teacher, movement director, dramaturg and writer for performance and music. Seutin works internationally, mainly dividing her time between Senegal, Belgium and the UK, where she artistically and creatively leads two international touring dance performance companies, with one being her own founded, Alesandra Seutin | Vocab Dance. Seutin founded Vocab Dance in 2007 and has steadily built its reputation for creating high-quality, artistic performance.
Renowned for their distinctively theatrical choreography and blend of movement vocabulary, text and dance, the Company’s work is focused on the exploration of subjects which impact our society, and with this captures their audience in a journey of compelling and outspoken dance theatre. Vocab Dance’s repertoire is diverse with over eleven productions within its catalogue, ranging from solos to ensemble pieces for indoor stages and outdoor settings. Also included in the company’s repertoire are two dance films created for digital audiences; the first commissioned by Channel 4 (U.K. television broadcaster) and the second an interactive piece made as part of a complementary series of work for stage and screen (Inside Head). Seutin’s reputation amongst the performing arts community, she has received over 20 choreographic commissions: Sadler’s Wells, KVS, Merce Cunningham Company, Wellcome Collection, Chanel4, Phoenix Dance Theater and National Youth Dance Company. Seutin has recently returned to the stage as performer, choreographer and movement director for Dear Winnie, an award-winning, multi-disciplinary performance work about the life of Winnie Mandela. Alongside her work with Vocab Dance, Seutin was announced as the CoArtistic Director of the famed École des Sables in Senegal, alongside fellow alumni Wesley Ruzibiza in 2020. Having trained at the institution herself under Germaine Acogny, Seutin is a worldwide ambassador and teacher of the Acogny technique. In collaboration, they both direct the development of the internationally renowned training programme and professional performance company, Company Jant-Bi. Seutin is also currently the Artistic Director of the UK’s National Youth Dance Company, whose 2021 production Speak Volumes was received with great acclaim by the media. Nandi Bhebhe is a British born Southern African performer and movement practitioner with over 13 years experience working in the creative sector in the UK and internationally. Following her 1st class degree in the performance art : dance, Bhebhe’s multidisciplinary skill set has shaped a performance and creative career that spans the theatre, dance and music sector. Bhebhe has worked extensively within companies including Kneehigh Theatre, Shakespeare’s Globe, Alesandra Seutin // Vocab Dance Company, RSC, Wise Children, Sadler’s Wells and on Broadway. She has been a company member of Vocab Dance Company since 2009. Bhebhe also works closely with director and choreographer Holly Blakey on video works such as ‘Wrath’, for Channel 4’s Random acts, and Gwilym Gold’s ‘Triumph’. Notable praise was given to Bhebhe for her choreography of Thunderbird Gerrard’s ‘Thunderbird’ music video ; Best Choreography nominee, UK MVA’s. Bhebhe is also co-director of art collective Bhebhe&Davies, whose work has been commissioned by the Tate Modern, Arts Admin, DCUK, Praksis//Norway and the Welcome collection. For Bhebhe, collaboration is key. She is deeply invested in the power of the body, the power of collective thinking and the galvanising ways multiple art forms come together to bring story to life.
Jo’s professional work spans performance, choreography, directing, teaching, curriculum development, rehearsal directing and mentoring for a wide range of companies, artists, festivals, theatres and educational institutes both in the UK and Europe. Jo performed with Vocab as part of their Episodes of Blackness tour and production, Word! Alongside her choreographic work and specialised workshops, Jo has taken on course leadership roles for Dance and Musical Theatre at Further Education colleges cross London and Essex. Her choreography has been performed at many theatres across London and internationally, including Sadler’s Wells and Royal Festival Hall, Stratford Circus Theatre, Queens Theatre Essex, Malta (Notte Bianca festival) and Texas USA. In 2019 Jo produced and directed the annual Havering Dance Festival, Essex, providing industry workshops, networking and performance opportunities, for aspiring and professional dancers. She also took part in pilot research for the development of The Pregnant Dancer project by Chloe Hilyar supported by ACE. In 2020 Jo supported Alesandra Seutin as part of the Artistic team in the creation, premiere and tour of Speak Volumes for NYDC Cohort 9. She also joined Alesandra and Vocab Dance Company in London and KVS Brussels as Rehearsal Director alongside Sade Alleyne for the reworked professional production of Boy Breaking Glass.

Assistant to the Choreographer Akeim Toussaint Buck Jo is currently lecturing on The Dance Ba course at Kingston University and Jazz faculty at Runway House ( training programme for postgraduate and professional dancers) and has started a new role as Outreach Lead driving the Lanes to Laine initiative at Laine Theatre Arts and extending learning opportunities for talented young dance and musical theatre artists from all backgrounds. Jo is honoured to have been asked to come back with Alesandra, working with Cohort 10 of NYDC and can’t wait to celebrate the dancers overwhelming talent and successes with them.
Akeim Toussaint Buck is an interdisciplinary performer and creator born in Jamaica and raised in England. Akeim’s intention is to create moving, thought provoking, accessible and free spirited projects. Since graduating from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in 2014. Akeim has been involved in multiple cross art form projects with a wide range of artists and communities from around the world. The aesthetic of his work combines skills such as: dance, film, poetry, beat-box, singing and acting. Fused to create performances that tell stories capable of bridging the intersections of a variety of audiences. Akeim’s movement interest has a myriad of inspirations, from Capoeira, KickBoxing, Contemporary Dance, Contact Improvisation, Caribbean Dance, Hip Hop, Yoga and Release Technique. His performance focus expands from the physical to vocal expression, building on an interest in the voice’s expressive qualities, with current explorations of beatboxing and vocal improvisation. Akeim’s work has been supported by Yorkshire Dance, Leeds Playhouse, Leeds Inspired, IRIE! Dance Theatre, Spin Arts, Serendipity, NSCD, Sadler’s Wells and Arts Council England. His choreographic work includes: Snakebox’s PLAY, ‘Windows Of Displacement,’ ‘Sib Y Osis’ and ‘Beatmotion.’ Akeim’s film work includes: ‘Galvanise’ and ‘Displaced.’

Composer Randolph Matthews Randolph Matthews compositions and vocal artistry span two decades, with solo and collaborative performances and writing. He has worked with artists from the Classical ,Jazz and Contemporary art scenes such as Herbie Hancock, Richard Bona, Mulatu Astatke and long time friendship and collaboration with Alesandra Seutin. Alongside album releases Randolph’s passion for multidisciplinary art forms has led to him presenting his own work in exhibitions in London and internationally for the National Gallery, Greenwich Maritime, British Museum, BBC documenting historic figures in Black British history. Since 2011 Ben has created a range of film and digital content for some of the UK’s leading brands and artistic institutions including Manchester City FC, Sadler’s Wells, Canterbury, Jacamo, Arts Council England and Bench. Driven by a desire to capture beautiful aesthetics he seeks to do so by tapping into human emotion and stories of the people he films. A lot of his work has been focused on the arts, creating films for Breakin’ Convention and Jonzi D, Far From The Norm, Vocab Dance, Company Chameleon . He has been working with NYDC since 2017, directing a number of different film projects. His work has been shown in various film festivals including London Short Film Festival, Cinedans (Holland), TriForce Short Film Festival (UK) and Loikka (Finland).

Roshaan started dancing at eleven years old at an after-school street dance club. Since then he has shifted styles and is now a student on The Place CAT scheme, where he takes classes in ballet and contemporary alongside his A Levels at The Elmgreen School. Roshaan would like to thank Jessica Barron, Ellie Mylroie, Irad Timberlake, Vicky Evans and the rest of The Place CAT team for helping him get to where he is today!
Jesse started dancing when he was eight years old. His training currently focuses on street dance styles, ballet and contemporary dance. He is member of the DanceEast CAT programme and ZooNation Academy of Dance, as well as studying for his A-Levels. This is Jesse’s second year with NYDC.
Ashur started dancing with Cockburn High School, performing with Ignite Dance Company. Ashur now trains with CAPA College and Momentum Dance in Musical Theatre, as well as Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Youth Academy. Ashur is also a One Dance UK Young Creative and has been involved with Northern School of Contemporary Dance’s Youth company as well as their Kick Off Boys programme. This is Ashur’s second year with NYDC.

Ella started dancing when she was three years old. She has trained in contemporary, ballet, jazz, lyrical, tap, modern, musical theatre and commercial. She was a member of both the Northern Ballet and Lowry CAT schemes and is currently in year 13 at Centre Pointe Vocational Dance College. She is also a member of Phoenix Youth Academy and the Rambert Pre Vocational Course. This is Ella’s second year with NYDC.
James started dancing when he was seven years old. Holding a diploma from Addict Dance Academy, he has trained across various disciplines within dance, such as commercial, contemporary, and jazz. James is currently studying on the Dance4 CAT scheme.
Olivia started her classical dance training when she was four years old. She is currently coached by Tom Withington in ballet and contemporary. She has also trained in ballroom and latin, jazz and the martial art form, Wing Chun. Olivia is at City College Norwich studying for her Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing and Production Arts. She is also a student on the DanceEast CAT programme.

Rory started dancing when he was eight years old. He has trained in street dance styles with the ZooNation Youth Company as well as training with Kieran Warner and Kashmir Leese. Rory is also a member of the Hampshire Youth Dance Company training in ballet and contemporary. This is his second year with NYDC.
Kian started dancing when he was eight years old, taking classes in ballroom and latin dance. Since then he has trained in a range of styles and is studying a BTEC in Performing Arts at New City College. Kian would like to thank his teacher Jo Leahy and says without her support he would not be where he is today. Kian is in his second year with NYDC.
Maya started dancing at 14 years old, when she chose to study GCSE dance. She has been a member of Ceyda Tanc Youth Dance company and now works with Ceyda Tanc, Gabby Sanders and Gemma Shrubb. Maya currently attends improvisation classes with Winifred Burnet Smith and is also a part of The Place CAT. This is Maya’s second year with NYDC.

Simeon was eight years old when he started dancing. He joined the DanceCity CAT Programme in 2014 and has trained in ballet and contemporary, as well as many other styles. Alongside his weekly CAT classes, Simeon is also studying Level 3 contemporary dance at Gateshead College, where he is in his final year.
Isabella started dancing from the age of three at Brooks Dance Academy. She has trained in ballet, jazz, commercial and heels. Isabella also trains in contemporary and is a member of Ceyda Tanc Youth. Isabella is currently studying Dance A Level at BHASVIC and is on Rambert’s PreVocational Course.
Jess started dancing when she was 11 years old. After discovering her love for dance whilst participating in classes at school, Jess decided to join a breakdance club after school. Jess has trained in contemporary, hiphop and breakdance and is working with Ascension Dance Company. Jess is currently taking a gap year so she can focus on dance and her other sporting endeavours.

Phoebe started dancing when she was 12 years old, training in release based contemporary technique at Penny and Jules Youth Dance in Brighton. She has danced with Wendy Wattling School of Dance, Ceyda Tanc Youth Dance and The Place Partnership scheme in Brighton, as well as training on the Trinity Laban CAT. Currently, Phoebe studies A levels in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths. This is Phoebe’s second year with NYDC.
Aimee started dancing when she was three years old at Open Space Dance School and has since trained in a range of styles. Aimee is a member of the Ceyda Tanc Youth Dance Company, which combines contemporary with Turkish dance. She is currently studying Dance A Level at BHASVIC and has attended the Trinity Laban CAT scheme for the last three years.
Seby started dancing when he was four years old at Streetz ahead, his mother’s dance company based in North London. As a member of ZooNation Youth Company from 2016-2022 Seby has a heavy grounding in hip hop, and has also trained for three years in ballet and contemporary at DanceEast CAT. Whilst Seby has a love for dance, he also has a musical theatre side and performed in Matilda the musical from 2017-18. Seby is currently studying at The BRIT School.

Skiye started dancing at 12 years old, training in street dance at “Step into dance”. She then studied GCSE dance focusing on contemporary at Shirley High School performing arts college. She is currently in year 13 studying A-Level dance. Skiye is in her second year with NYDC.
Gabby has been training in ballet since the age of eight; she attended DanceWorks in Leeds for four years and then trained at Northern Ballet. Gabby is now in her second year of CAPA college where she studies musical theatre and is training in ballet, jazz, commercial and contemporary dance.
Lottie started ballet when she was five years old. Since then, she has trained in contemporary, jazz, street and tap and is a student at The Bit School in Croydon. She is also trains on the Rambert Pre-Vocational course and is a member of English National Ballet Youth Company.

Jade started dancing when she was three years old at The Caister School of Dance. She then joined Dance Estelle, training in ballet, tap, modern, jazz, and her favourites: commercial and contemporary. She has been a part of the Wayne McGregor Youth company and is currently studying a Level 3 Extended Dance Diploma Course at City College Norwich.
Jocelyn started dancing with the Heage Windmillers when she was five years old, training in Irish, Clog and Rapper Sword dance. At the age of 12 she joined a youth contemporary company with Debi Hederwick and later started a class at Déda. Jocelyn joined the Dance4 CAT programme in September and is currently studying for a diploma in Art and Design.
Renée joined The Place CAT scheme at the age of 13, training in ballet and contemporary dance. She has also been a part of Artistry Youth Dance where she learnt jazz technique. Renée is currently taking classes in street dance at Pineapple Arts and takes afro-house and afrobeat open classes at Base Dance Studios.

Mads started dancing when she was two years old. She began training in ballet then joined jazz and tap classes. At 11 years old she started contemporary technique and later did two years of hip hop. She is now a part of The Place CAT programme as well as studying for her A Levels.
Josie started dancing at three years old at Harlequin Studios. Her styles include ballet, tap, jazz, ballroom, latin, street, disco and contemporary. Josie is currently studying Dance A-Level at BHASVIC.
Adhya started dancing when she was nine years old, studying Bharathanatyam at Kalakunj. She is part of The Place CAT scheme, training in ballet and contemporary dance and was previously a part of the Yuvagati CAT scheme. She is now doing her A-Levels at Kendrick Grammar School.

Naomi started dancing when she was seven years old at Jam dance company, where she is now a dance captain and teacher. She is currently in her final year of studies at New City College and has been the leader of hip hop group, DFTL at City Gates Church. Naomi would like to thank Jane Alderson , Shevon Maltwood, Lisa Edwards, Tanaka Bingwa Brittany Stevens , Jo Leahy , Claire marsh and Ashely J for their help and support.
TK started dancing when she was two years old at the Betty Chappelle Dance Centre. She has trained in ballet, tap, modern jazz and contemporary along with urban styles. She is currently studying A-Level dance at CAPA College.
Amari started dancing at his local Saturday dance school when he was three years old. He now trains with Ballet Black Junior School, Rambert Pre-Vocational Programme, Artistry Youth Dance and English National Ballet YouthCo, as well as studying for his A Levels at Sixth Form. Amari would like to give special thanks to Kamara Gray, the Artistic Director of Artistry Youth Dance, as it is with her encouragement and guidance that he auditioned for NYDC! Amari is in his second year with NYDC.

Olivia started dancing at the age of three years old and has trained in contemporary, ballet, jazz, hip hop and commercial. She currently choreographs and assists GCSE classes with Louise Dryden, her dance teacher of five years. Olivia is studying for her A-Levels in Biology and Philosophy at Bacon’s College and is also training on the Trinity Laban CAT programme.
Mahala started dancing when she was five years old at her local ballet school. She currently trains in contemporary and ballet at the Lowry CAT and is studying for her A Levels at Loreto Sixth Form College.
Maddy started dancing when she was six years old, taking classes in ballet, tap and jazz at Victoria’s Dance Academy. She began contemporary dance classes with Grace Murdoch at the age of eight. In 2017, Maddy joined Propeller (a contemporary youth dance programme in Cornwall) and has continued dancing there for the past six years. She completed a BTEC in dance at Penryn College and is now studying for her A-Levels at Truro College.
Lily White Bedfordshire Lily started dancing when she was 14 years old. She has trained in street dance, commercial, ballet and contemporary. Lily is a member of The Place CAT programme and is studying for her A-Levels in PE, Gym Instructing and Dance at Luton Sixth Form College.
Genevieve Wright Norfolk Genevieve started ballet, tap and modern dance classes when she was seven years old at The Samara Ballet School, now Horizons Dance Academy. She was first introduced to contemporary dance when she joined the DanceEast CAT scheme at the age of ten in 2014. Tickets will be available to book directly with each venue with the exception of the Birmingham performance which is part of the wider One Dance UK UDance Festival.
Get involved in NYDC There are lots of ways that young people can get involved in NYDC, from workshops to summer schools to company membership. Our activity happens all around the country so watch out for us coming to a town near you. NYDC celebrates diversity. We welcome applications from disabled and non-disabled dancers from all backgrounds, dance styles and levels of experience. All our activity is designed to ensure that each individual can take away something new from their time with us.
Experience Workshops
National Youth Dance Company holds free workshops every year to meet hundreds of young dancers and give a taste of what life is like as part of the company. We also use them to recruit our new company members. The workshops are a great opportunity to try new dance styles, learn about dance training and career pathways, and meet other people who are passionate about dance. Throughout July and August, NYDC will be delivering Experience Workshops across the country to search for 30 new dancers to join cohort 11 of the company and work with 2022/23 Guest Artistic Director Wayne McGregor. Schools Workshops
From September 2022 we will be delivering a brand new Nationwide schools programme, offering FREE workshops to schools across the country. Led by artists who have been through NYDC themselves as company members, these workshops are a chance for students to learn material from Quartier Paradis and find out more about life in NYDC. Thank you! NYDC appreciates the support that the company has received from varied organisations across the country. Many of the young dancers in the company come from established training schemes, colleges, youth dance companies, dance schools and Centres for Advanced Training across England and return to these in between the residencies. NYDC would like to thank all the dancers’ teachers for their generosity and co-operation in allowing them to fully commit to the company and for igniting such passion in these young people. NYDC aims to engage with as many young people as possible from across the country. This is only achievable through the network of partners and host venues that have supported the company by raising awareness, hosting workshops and performances and acting as expert advisors in their regions. Learning & Engagement at Sadler’s Wells Sadler’s Wells delivers an extensive learning and engagement programme that provides life enriching experiences through dance for people of all ages. Through this work Sadler’s Wells aims to increase access to our artistic programme and supports, celebrates and showcases the creativity of all the participants who engage our learning and engagement activities. Through our Associate Schools and Community Engagement programmes we provide on-going opportunities for people within our local communities to connect with the artistic programme at Sadler’s Wells and have the chance to explore their own creativity.
