How do I add an academy or an interest group to my membership?
SAEM members are eligible to join academies and interest groups for free to network and collaborate in subspecialties of SAEM. Just log in to your member profile. Click “My Account” in the upper right navigation bar. Click the “Update (+/-) Academies and Interest Groups” button on the left side. Select the box next to the academy you wish to join. Click “save.” (If joining AAAEM, there is a separate application process.)
How do I update my member profile? Your SAEM online account is created for YOU and gives you a convenient way to manage everything connected to your SAEM member account. Join an SAEM Committee One of the most valuable benefits of an SAEM membership is the opportunity to serve on an SAEM committee. SAEM committees help the Society achieve its goals by identifying and guiding new projects and opportunities. Serving on a committee furthers your professional development by providing leadership experience, expanding your professional network, and strengthening your ties within the specialty. Join an SAEM Academy An SAEM academy provides a means for SAEM members with special interests or expertise to join together to network, collaborate on educational initiatives, develop policy, perform research, and provide faculty development pertaining to their specialty area. Each academy adds a unique and powerful voice to SAEM and to the specialty of emergency medicine. Join an SAEM Interest Group Interest Groups provide a mechanism for members of the Society who are interested in a specific topic or area to meet, share ideas, and network in a relatively unstructured and informal fashion. Participate on an SAEM Task Force SAEM task forces are special working groups appointed by the Society to carry out a specific projects or objectives approved by the SAEM Board of Directors. The SAEM president-elect is responsible for appointing the chairs and members of the task forces and for coordinating the development of objectives. An online task force interest form is made available to SAEM members on an annual basis, in the winter. Task force appointments are announced by April.
Nominate Yourself (or Someone Else) for an SAEM Leadership Position SAEM leadership positions are filled by committed individuals who have a wide range of perspectives and possess the relevant skills and experience to effectively lead. Engage With the SAEM Foundation The SAEM Foundation (SAEMF), is a 501(c)(3) public charity whose mission is to improve emergency patient care through supporting the development of innovative researchers, expert educators and future academic emergency medicine leaders. The SAEMF awards more than $500,000 a year in grants to SAEM members to help them develop the skills they need to further the specialty, improve emergency patient care, and ensure a rich and robust field of scientists and educators that will continue to advance the specialty for years to come. Chair Development Program
The AACEM Chair Development Program (CDP) is a leadership training initiative designed to enhance the capabilities and effectiveness of new and aspiring academic emergency medicine department chairs through skill development, advising, and mentorship. Sessions, held in conjunction with the AACEM/AAAEM Retreat, the SAEM Annual Meeting, and the ACEP Scientific Assembly, provide practical, emergency medicine-specific leadership training. CDP faculty instructors include experienced emergency medicine chairs, deans, and administrators, as well as other leadership development experts.
Certificate in Academic Emergency Medicine Administration
The Academy of Administrators in Academic Emergency Medicine (AAAEM) Certificate in Academic Emergency Medicine Administration (CAEMA) is a certification training program that encompasses the body of knowledge required of administrators in academic emergency medicine, including: hiring and advancing staff, budgeting and financial reporting, how to use them analytics, research, organization skills, billing and coding, team building, strategic planning, and more.

Advanced Research Methodology Evaluation and Design (ARMED) is a research course for junior faculty taught by leading experts in academic emergency medicine. The purpose of the course is to provide participants with the fundamental knowledge and skills to design high-quality research projects and grant proposals to jumpstart their research careers. The course is targeted to junior faculty within five years of graduation, fellows, and senior residents who are interested in pursuing a career in research.
Emerging Leader Development Program (eLEAD)
The Association of Academic Chairs in Emergency Medicine (AACEM) and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) are proud to support the inaugural Emerging Leader Development Program (eLEAD). This year-long course will provide emerging leaders in academic emergency medicine with a structured, longitudinal experience designed to develop foundational leadership skills, cultivate a meaningful career network, and build a bridge to countless opportunities in their field.
SAEM Master Educator
The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine is proud to introduce the SAEM Master Educator course. This year-long program is designed for early/mid-career faculty who desire to strengthen their conceptual understanding of educational theory and practice, their ability to design and implement educational programs of the highest quality, and their effectiveness as educators in the classroom and at the bedside. The course is intended for faculty who already have some experience and expertise in medical education, but want to take their skills to the next level.
Regional Meetings
Held around the country throughout the year, SAEM Regional Meetings provide opportunities, particularly for young investigators, to present original research and participate in sessions designed to teach essential research skills. Typically conducted in areas where multiple residency programs are based, regional meetings provide access to a wide audience of young investigators and promote academic exchange among residency programs and their faculty and residents.

Annual Meeting
SAEM’s annual meeting is the largest forum of its kind for the presentation of original education and research in academic emergency medicine. Hosted in a different major U.S. city in May of each year, the SAEM annual meeting is a dynamic four-day gathering of academic emergency medicine professionals from around the world. Averaging more than 3,200 attendees, the SAEM annual meeting offers both professional and educational sessions. Registration for the SAEM annual meeting opens annually on December 1.
Educational Sessions Abstracts present research data, including study background and methodology, research limitations and results, and the conclusions/significance of the study. Abstract session lengths vary depending on the presentation type: plenary (15 minutes), full oral (12 minutes), lightning oral (eight minutes), ePoster (seven minutes). Advanced EM Workshops are intensive educational sessions that focus on particular techniques, skills, and practical aspects of the specialty. More than a dozen full- and half-day workshops cover specialized areas in emergency medicine and strengthen knowledge and skills in specific topic areas such as clinical Innovations, communication, gender and bias, research, teaching, and more. Didactics are presentations that are designed to teach on a particular subject and can vary in structure from lecture and flipped classroom formats to panels and small group discussions. More than 100 innovative and interactive sessions cover a range of educational topics in key categories, including: administrative, career development, education, clinical, research. IGNITE! talks are fast-paced, highly energetic, captivating, and engaging presentations on a variety of topics. The IGNITE! format is five minutes in length with 20 auto-advancing slides. A panel of judges selects a “Best of IGNITE!” winner from each IGNITE! session. An “Audience Choice Award” is also given at each session based on audience polling. All topics are accepted. Speakers in the past have talked about their experiences in disaster relief, waxed poetic about the role of machine learning in EM, and challenged core practices in EM critical care and education.
Innovations present novel ideas, new products, innovative procedures, and unique approaches in medical education, faculty development, wellness, operations, and patient care. Innovations are presented in either a seven-minute oral presentation or as a tabletop/ hands-on demonstration. Consensus Conference gathers junior and senior researchers, thought leaders, and other stakeholders in emergency medicine to generate research agendas for the important, unanswered questions facing emergency care, leading to high-quality, funded research projects of varying scopes from a variety of funding sources. Topics have included telehealth, pediatric emergency medicine, wellness, simulation, shared decision making, imaging, and gender-specific research.
Training + Networking SAEM Leadership Forum provides exposure to core leadership topics with an emphasis on experiential learning and practical application. Junior Faculty Development Forum is an opportunity for early-career faculty to engage with senior leaders in emergency medicine to develop strategies for promotion, productivity, and academic advancement. Chief Resident Forum features didactic presentations, interactive sessions, panel discussions, and networking sessions with fellow resident leaders and established senior leaders in emergency medicine administration, education, and research. Medical Student Symposium provides an overview of emergency medicine and in-depth information about the process of applying for an emergency medicine residency position. A networking lunch with emergency medicine program directors and clerkship directors is included. Residency & Fellowship Fair is an opportunity for medical students and residents to explore residency and fellowship programs from across the nation, meet current residents and fellows, ask questions, and seek application and interview advice. Speed Mentoring matches residents and medical student mentees into small groups of 5-10 attendings for quick-fire, 10-minute mentoring sessions.
Experiential Learning Competitions SIMWars is an entertaining, educational, simulation-based competition in which teams of clinical providers face off in timed, interactive scenarios to demonstrate their clinical skills, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities. SAEM’s Simulation Academy SIMWars is THE premier national simulation competition for emergency medicine residents. SonoGames® is an innovative, game-style approach to emergency medicine ultrasound education in which residency teams representing more than half of all emergency medicine residencies in the country, face off in an energetic competition that demonstrates their hands-on skills, knowledge of point-of-care ultrasound, and clinical decision-making abilities. SAEM Clinical Images Exhibit displays the most original, high-quality clinical images relevant to the practice of emergency medicine selected from more than 120 submissions. SAEM’s Got Talent showcases the best, SAEM member-created, Free Open Access Medical Education (FOAMed) in a “talent show” type of competitive format.
Just for Fun Dodgeball pits emergency medicine residency teams from all over the country in an epic battle to the finish and the right to call themselves dodgeball champs in this grownup twist to the classic playground game. The RAMS Party is our biggest bash of the year. Held at one of the hottest spots in our annual meeting host city, the RAMS party is a high-energy, over-the-top, red-carpet experience with dancing, open bar, live DJ, fun photo-ops, and more than a few surprises.

Scholarships Advanced Research Methodology Evaluation Design (ARMED) Scholarship is awarded to two residents or fellows who are interested in pursuing research-oriented careers and are to offset costs associated with attending SAEM20 and the Advanced Research Methodology Evaluation and Design (ARMED) live workshop at SAEM headquarters. ARMED for MedED Scholarship SAEM is proud to offer the Advanced Research Methodology Evaluation and Design in Medical Education (ARMED MedEd) course. This course builds upon the fundamental knowledge and skills of health professions education researchers and equips them to design a high-quality medical education research project and grant proposal. AACEM Chair Development Program Scholarships (CDP) cover the full tuition of $3950 to attend the CDP, plus a $2,500 travel stipend. SAEM Awards FOAMed Excellence in Education Award honors an SAEM member who has made outstanding contributions to the online learning community of emergency medicine through innovative and engaging FOAMed content. Marcus L. Martin Leadership in Diversity and Inclusion Award honors an SAEM member who has made exceptional contributions to emergency medicine through advancing diversity and inclusion in emergency medicine. John Marx Leadership Award honors an SAEM member who has made exceptional contributions to emergency medicine through local, regional, national, or international leadership, with priority given to those with demonstrated leadership within SAEM. Excellence in Research Award honors an SAEM member who has made outstanding contributions to emergency medicine through the creation and sharing of new knowledge.
Medical Student Ambassador Program Each year, dozens of medical students from around the country are selected through a highly competitive process for the SAEM Medical Student Ambassador (MSA) Program. MSAs are vital members of the on-site Program Committee whose goal is to ensure the smooth execution of the annual meeting. Program Committee members are leaders in the specialty and have diverse academic interests. Each MSA is paired with a Program Committee mentor based upon interests, and meets individually with the mentor during the annual meeting, and frequently beyond. For medical students with an interest in emergency medicine, the MSA program is a unique opportunity that enables one-on-one interaction with successful academicians from around the country and facilitates skill development in education and academic leadership. In fact, many SAEM leaders got their start in the MSA program. In addition to having their annual meeting registration fees waived, each MSA receives a personal letter of recommendation for their files. They also have the unique opportunity to participate in daily MSA-only lectures with leaders in academia on curriculum vitae development, selecting away rotations, and other topics especially relevant to medical students with an interest in emergency medicine. Applications for the Medical Student Ambassador Program usually opens annually on December 1 and closes in mid-January.
Young Investigator Award recognizes SAEM members who have demonstrated commitment and achievement in research during the early stages of their academic careers. Hal Jayne Excellence in Education Award honors an SAEM member who has made outstanding contributions to emergency medicine through the teaching of others and the improvement of pedagogy. Advancement of Women in Academic Emergency Medicine Award honors an SAEM member who has made significant contributions to the advancement of women in academic emergency medicine. Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award is given on behalf of The Arnold P. Gold Foundation to a practicing emergency medicine physician who exemplifies compassionate, patient-centered care. Organizational Advancement Award honors an SAEM member who has made significant contributions to programs, services, or leadership within the Society that has advanced the mission and trajectory of SAEM.
RAMS Awards Resident Researcher Award is awarded annually to a senior emergency medicine resident who has demonstrated exceptional promise and early accomplishment in the creation of new knowledge. RAMS Excellence in Education Award is given annually to a senior emergency medicine resident who has demonstrated exceptional aptitude and passion for teaching during residency. Medical Student Excellence in Emergency Medicine Award is given annually to a medical student who displays excellence in academics and interest in pursuing a career in emergency medicine. The recipient receives a full SAEM membership with all benefits. RAMS Leadership in Emergency Medicine Award honors a medical student or practicing emergency medicine resident who is taking a leading role in his or her student interest group or residency program and making an impact on the local, regional, national, or international level through his or her efforts. RAMS Excellence in Research Award is awarded annually to an emergency medicine resident and/or a medical student who has had a role in the development of evidence-based medicine in the specialty. RAMS Innovative Educator Award is given to an emergency medicine educator who has demonstrated creativity, courage, and innovation in emergency medicine education.

SAEM Foundation Grants The SAEM Foundation, in partnership with SAEM, provides grants to national and international universities and medical schools to help fund innovative research and education initiatives in the field of emergency medicine. In order for a project to be eligible for funding, it must fit into the scope of one of the grant categories listed below, and must support the mission of SAEM and the SAEM Foundation. Medical Toxicology Foundation (MTF) Research Grant ($10,000) provides support for research proposals that advance the science of medical toxicology in emergency medicine. Clerkship Directors in Emergency Medicine (CDEM) Innovations in Undergraduate Emergency Medicine Education Grant ($5,000) is awarded to a member of CDEM who demonstrates a commitment to emergency medicine and is actively guiding medical students in the field of academic emergency medicine. Research Training Grant (RTG) ($300,000) provides funding to support the development of a scientist in emergency medicine.
Research Large Project Grant (LPG) ($150,000) supports an emergency medicine faculty member to conduct a large-scale research project to advance his/her career and subsequently obtain federal funding by developing pilot data. Education Research Grant (ERG) ($100,000) provides support for a dedicated two-year training period for the selected fellow, including pursuit and completion of an advanced degree in education. Education Project Grant (EPG) ($20,000) provides support for a medical education research project. SAEMF NIDA Mentor-Facilitated Training Award in Substance Use Disorders Science Dissemination ($12,000) supports the development of expertise in Substance Use Disorder (SUD), especially Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), through completion of a mentor-supervised project focused on adoption and/or dissemination of SUD treatment research and the publication of the results. Given in partnership with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Academy of Emergency Ultrasound (AEUS) Research Grant ($10,000) provides support for research proposals that evaluate the impact of point-of-care ultrasound on clinical practice or characterize point-of-care ultrasound learning curves.
Global Emergency Medicine Academy (GEMA) Research Pilot Grant ($10,000) provides support for a junior researcher in the field of international emergency medicine to enter a mentored project. Academy for Women in Academic Emergency Medicine (AWAEM) Research Grant ($5,000) supports one early-career investigator (fellow, instructor, or assistant professor during the award period) who wishes to address a research question in line with the core ideology of AWAEM. Simulation Academy Novice Research Grant ($5,000) provides seed funding to support novice investigators in emergency medicine with fewer than five years of simulation-based research experience who have shown promise in pushing the research boundaries of simulation-based endeavors in emergency medicine through feasible pilot studies. Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine (ADIEM) Research Grant ($3,000) provides support for research that evaluates the state of diversity and inclusion in the field of emergency medicine, evaluates interventions to improve diversity and inclusion in emergency medicine, or addresses disparities in healthcare outcomes in the practice of emergency medicine among underrepresented or marginalized groups. Resident and Medical Students (RAMS) Research Grant ($2,500 – $5000) to foster interest in research among emergency medicine trainees (medical students and residents). The focus is on self-limited research projects, including educational projects, that are impactful in the current or future practice of emergency medicine and can be completed in a one-year time frame. Emergency Medicine Interest Group Grant (EMIG) ($500) provides seed money and/ or funding for supplies, consultation, etc. to established or developing EMIGs to promote growth of emergency medicine education at the medical student level and identify new educational methodologies that advance undergraduate education in emergency medicine. Grants for Early Medical/Surgical Subspecialists’ Transition to Aging Research (GEMSSTAR) for Emergency Medicine Supplemental Funding Program uses a National Institute of Aging (NIA)-funded small research project (R03) mechanism to support emergency medicine GEMSSTAR applicants in their professional development plans. Emergency Medical Foundation (EMF)-SAEMF Medical Student Research Grant awards stipends to encourage medical students to engage in and be exposed to emergency medicine research. Jointly sponsored by the EMF.

Other Services and Resources Residency Vacancy Services connects emergency medicine residency directors with prospective residents to fill vacancies in training programs. Programs are invited to notify SAEM of any unexpected vacancies or positions created due to program expansion, etc., and SAEM will post your listing on its website. Prospective EM residents may review these listings and contact the residency programs directly. Consultation Services, in consultation with AACEM, assists individuals, departments, and institutions with developing, evaluating, and/or improving various services, including new residency and fellowship programs; developing departmental status for emergency medicine divisions; subspecialty expertise (research, ultrasound, etc.); and billing, patient safety, etc. —F aculty Development Consultations coordinates consultations in areas related to faculty development, provided by individuals with experience and expertise in those areas. —E thics Consultation Services facilitates education, research, and clinical ethics in the emergency setting and is a place for members to bring ethical dilemmas and receive guidance on how an issue may be approached from an ethics perspective.
