GEMA Conference Call #14 November 30, 2012, 11a-12p EST Minutes Present were : Drs. Kathy Clem, Jim Holliman, Mark Hauswald, Adam Levin, Ian Martin, Hani Mowafi , Vicken Totten, Janis Tupesis, Scott Weiner, and Ms . Holly Gouin I. Leadership changes (Martin) a. Vice-President. Dr. Adam Levin has agreed to serve out the Vice-Presidential term of Dr. Walker, and to run for the office. b. Chair, Development Committee – Dr. Jorge Otero stepped down, Dr. Janis Tupesis is serving out the term. c. Chair, Benefits, Education, and Services Committee – Dr. Walker has also stepped down from this committee, and Dr. Hansoti will complete the term. II. Membership (Weiner/Levine/Gouin) a. Total membership is now 145, which makes us the second largest Academy. Of these, some 74 are full dues-paying faculty, 59 are residents, 5 are fellows, and 7 are medical students. Over the next year, we plan to aim to grow the faculty portion of the membership. b. Drs. Martin and Clem reported on changes at SAEM. SAEM has created a new layer of leadership (Committee of Academy Leadership (CAL)) ,which includes the chairs of each Academy (Academies have only 15% of membership, but this 15% is the most active part of the membership.) The first phone meeting this new group will be on December 13. The BOD has charged the group to decide on a more unified Academy fee structure for faculty, residents, and students. As a result, GEMA may be asked to get rid of its “free for residents” category. c. There was a discussion on the effects of this potential fee structure on Program Directors and residencies. The conclusion was that residents who really are interested will be ready to pay the fee. d. Strategy updates: (Weiner). Dr. Weiner sent out a list of all the Global EM Fellowship directors, separated into those who are SAEM or not, and GEMA or not. He plans to focus recruitment efforts on those Fellowship Directors who already are SAEM members but not GEMA members. He will draft a letter explaining why they should join GEMA and be will including the “Why GEMA?”

trifold. Dr. Martin will help write the letter. He has asked that each member of the Executive Committee commit to contacting 3-4 of these persons. AI: Each Executive Committee member will receive a list of the 3-4 persons they are to personally contact. III. Collaborations a. AEM Consensus Conference 2013: Global Health and Emergency Care: A Research Agenda (Martin/Frazer) Dr. Martin posted a link to the Interest Form: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHE3TWJNSmNtVzBx cEdHUE5oZUloT0E6MQ. Any member who wants to be part of writing up the proceedings of the conference is to post there interest here. b.

Fundraising is on target. Not much movement on grants, so we have been relying on universities and organizations. PLEASE talk to your university if you think they might support the consensus Conference.

c. A draft agenda is available to send to members. The speaker line up is starting to come together. AI: Dr. Martin will attach the draft agenda. d. GEMA-EPi partnership (Totten). Ms Gouin has an advertising budget and has some good ideas on our behalf. We can build upon them. AI: Dr. Totten will call Ms. Gouin about content. e. SAEM International Outreach Task Force (Martin). This committee is chaired by Joe Lex. At the meeting in Denver, which Dr. Martin attended, he found that this committee covers much of what GEMA has been doing. He recommended that GEMA work synergistically rather than in competition with this task force. f. Upcoming international meetings (Totten) Dr. Totten appended a list of upcoming EM conferences. Dr. Totten was charged with sending out the list to the membership, and asking if anyone would be willing to take some advertising materials with them. g. Dr. Martin commented that the African Conference on Emergency Medicine went well, and GEMA’s presence was enhanced by the SAEM table cloth, the journals, the stage, and the application forms that Ms. Gouin had supplied. h. Dr. Holliman commented that various groups seem to be trying to co-opt the name “ICEM” and this has been discussed at the IFEM leadership level.

AI: Dr. Martin will send the list of interested members to Ms. Gouin. AI: Dr. Totten send out the list over list-serve if you are going, please advertise GEMA. IV. Reports a. The report of the GEMA Benefits, Education, and Services Committee (Hansoti) was postponed because Dr. Hansoti was not present. b. GEMA Development Committee (Tupesis/Martin) i. Fundraising goals – although not met, fundraising is going well. ii. Processes – The committee is continuing to develop a strategy for fundraising for the Consensus Conferences as well as for GEMA. If anyone has specific ideas or contacts, please contact Dr. Tupesis. iii. Additionally, we are seeking funding for a post-Consensus Conference GEMA reception. There will be Consensus Conference attendees who are not SAEM members and hope to use this venue to recruit them. AI: Put out an “SOS call” to GEMA membership to think about other potential funding sources that we can contact those sources with requests. c. GEMA Nominations and Elections Committee (Runyon) (not able to attend). The Nominations Committee has outlined a timeline. Will reach out the membership in the next 2 weeks. Nominations will be through the multimedia method used by Dr. Weiner. There is more at stake this time since there are more offices open. AI: Ms. Gouin is to send out the request for nominations: Timeline tentatively is Jan. 30 for nominations, Feb. 28 for nominees to submit their YouTube & CV, and open voting in the month of April. d. SAEM Certification Task Force (Martin/ Hauswald) has more or less been stalled temporarily because of didactic transition from evaluating competencies to documenting milestones. The task force started modeling the document on core competencies, and now the pattern is changed to milestones. None the less, there are some suggestions in it such as protected time for the Program Director. e. GEMA-sponsored publications (Weiner). Academic EM rejected Effective Teaching and Feedback Skills for International Emergency Medicine “Train the Trainers” Programs.. It is now under review at The Journal of Emergency Medicine. The Consensus Guideline on Safety abroad, co-signed by EMRA, GEMA, & CORD was accepted by Acad EM. The first draft of the International EM career article is expected to be on line for spring submission.

f. GEMA-sponsored didactic proposals for 2013 Annual Meeting (Martin). There were 5 proposals put forth; the topics spanned widely. Two were accepted. One of the 2 was Dr. Levine’s “Top 10 International EM articles”, and the other was “International Emergency medicine, you CAN have it all.” With ADIEM, we had proposed a joint didactic which was rejected. We plan to continue to work with ADEM on Cultural Competencies. V. New Business (Martin) a. Annual Meeting 2013 planning. Every Academy gets 4 hours to program anyway it wants. After much discussion, those 4 hours will be divided into 1.5 hours of Business Meeting, 1 hour for “Getting your Name in Print” and 1 for International Fellowship Program Highlights. Drs. Hauswald, Mowafi and Tupesis agreed to lead the programming. b. Fortunately, SAEM is still committed to the EuSEM showcase. We don’t have to use any of our 4 hours for this. c. There was some additional discussion regarding creating a “stand alone” research and publication course which could be piggybacked on to various other conferences and serve to get GEMA’s name and expertise out there. This cannot be compressed into one hour, but would be expected to last some 4-8 hours. d. Awards: It is time to solicit nominations for our recurring awards. AI: Ms Gouin will send out the request for nominations for awards. e. Publicity: Discussion ensued about the utility of keeping the newsletter as a members’ only benefit, or showcasing it as a vehicle for promoting GEMA. It was decided that a blurb with a link will be put into the next eNewsletter linking the interested reader to our website if they wish to read our newsletter. We may also lift a article from our newsletter to submit to the eNewsletter. f. Another suggestion was to use our newsletter as a way to highlight member’s accomplishments and publications. One participant claimed he has to search almost every month to find new articles on International EM; this person agreed to send the most recent list to Dr. Totten for inclusion in the next newsletter. g. Website Update: SAEM plans to launch its new website soon, which should be much more dynamic and interactive. VI. Next Meeting (Martin) a. No call in December. Next Conference Call in January:
