2018 SAEM New England Regional Meeting

WELCOME! Dear Colleague, We are proud to welcome you to the New England Regional Meeting of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM). Now in our 22nd year, this meeting is the primary forum for presenting original emergency medicine research in the New England area. The New England Regional Meeting is sponsored by the New England Research Directors (NERDs) committee whose membership is listed below. This year’s meeting was organized by the University of Massachusetts Medical School. We’d like to extend our gratitude to the people who have helped to make this meeting happen: Megan N. Schagrin, MBA, CAE, CFRE, Holly Byrd-Duncan, MBA, Doug Ray and the rest of the SAEM team; our coordinator, Amy Michaluk; the NERDS committee members; as well as the many volunteers and session moderators. Your time and efforts are enormously appreciated. Sincerely,

2018 SAEM New England Regional Meeting

GENERAL INFORMATION SAEM MISSION The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) is dedicated to the improvement of care of the acutely ill and injured patient by improving research and education. To achieve this mission, SAEM influences health policy through forums, publications, interorganizational collaboration, policy development, and consultation services for physicians, teachers, researchers, and students. SAEM represents excellence and leadership in academic emergency medicine, and its values include idealism and quality in all endeavors, nurturing and camaraderie and diversity among members, as well as creative and symbiotic interactions with other organizations. The mission of SAEM is to lead the advancement of academic emergency medicine through education and research, advocacy and professional development.

MEETING OBJECTIVES In keeping with the mission of SAEM, the New England Regional Meeting aims to provide emergency medicine trainees and faculty the opportunity to present their original research in a forum that will foster development and productivity of new researchers in emergency medicine. As a result of participating in this activity, participants should be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

apply both education and research findings to your emergency medicine practice; apply key statistical indicators in analyzing research and educational results; utilize acceptable research and educational methods and study designs in the development of research projects; realize the details of the framework for Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) so that intended practice improvements are vetted through this prism; and obtain the necessary education, research, and administrative tools needed to advance within the academic emergency medicine sector.

CME This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the University of Cincinnati and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. The University of Cincinnati is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Physician Credit Designation: The University of Cincinnati designates this live activity for a maximum of 6 AMA PRA CME Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

2018 SAEM New England Regional Meeting

YOUNG INVESTIGATOR RESEARCH REVIEWS (1 – 2 PM) Location: Ballroom Moderators: Virginia Mangolds, MSN and John P. Haran, MD This is a new format this year aimed at focusing on investigators from New England and how they have developed their research careers. The purpose of this platform is to show what Emergency Medicine research is like and how different the topics can be. It is also a way to share the story of how successful investigators got to where they are today, who helped them, and what mechanisms were used. 1:00 – 1:15

Korilyn Sauser Zachrison, MD, MSc Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard University Dr. Kori Sauser Zachrison is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an emergency physician at Massachusetts General Hospital. She specializes in health services research focused on stroke systems of care and telemedicine. Her work is funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (K-08 mechanism), the Emergency Medicine Foundation, and the American Heart Association. She received her MD from the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in 2008 and completed her residency at Northwestern University in 2012. She completed the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at the University of Michigan in 2014 where she earned a Masters of Science in Health and Healthcare Research. She is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. (5 min Q&A)

1:20 – 1:35

Peter Smulowitz, MD Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center / Harvard University Dr. Peter Smulowitz is an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an emergency physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He completed his Masters in Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health and has a combined interest in health services research and health policy. Dr. Smulowitz' early research work centered around the impact of health care reform in Massachusetts on ED utilization, cost control and payment reform in healthcare, and alternative models of liability reform. He previously served as Health Policy Fellow for the Massachusetts State Senate Committee on Health Care Financing and currently serves as chair of the Governmental Affairs Committee for the Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians and member of the State Legislative and Regulatory Committee for the American College of Emergency Physicians. This work lead to an R01 via the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality where Dr. Smulowitz is a mentored co-investigator on a series of specific aims focusing on hospital admissions from the ED for the elderly. (5 min Q&A)

1:40 – 1:55

Richard Andrew Taylor, MD, MHS Yale University Dr. Andrew Taylor is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of ED Clinical Informatics and Analytics at the Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Taylor earned his undergraduate degree in physics from the University of Mississippi. He completed medical school at Emory University School of Medicine and Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Connecticut. Most recently he completed fellowships in point-of-care ultrasound and Masters in Health Science with an informatics focus from Yale University. Dr. Taylor's primary interest is in informatics and improving patient care through data science. His research focuses on applying database, data mining, and machine learning techniques to big data stored in a variety of health care-related sources. Principally, his research group works on mining electronic health record (EHR) data for predictive analytics and causal inference. Another area of his research uses decision analysis to discover optimal diagnostic pathways. (5 min Q&A)
