An architectural prototype innovated by public

Academic project

2006, Fall Individual project

Scope: Research and analysis/ Mechanical design / Furniture design / Spatial design / Unit development / Typological approach

Location: Taipei, Taiwan

Program: Housing Typology

How does the construction evolve under current consumerism that forms the future architectural typologies? In a consumer economy society today, people regard life as a consumer product. Thus, I choose pets and homes, which are both close companions to people, as examples to develop concepts for this project. With this aim, I research various types of relationships between pets and modern people and classify desires that people capture from pets as my mechanisms to create real luxury “Housing 3.0”. Furthermore, this new redefinition of the residential space offers different scales of objects and spaces to allow residents to extend their wishes. By living in “Housing 3.0”, people can meet diverse kind of requests, which they cannot get from everyday life. “Housing 3.0” is an avatar of oneself, which is able to substitute their unaccomplished goals. This new typology of residential architecture is real luxury housing for people who want their life dream come true.

Housing

City re ects our desire. Housing re ects our desire. Pet re ects our desire, too.Take housing as an example, the paradigm of shifts through time e notion of pet also shift though time. Under comparison, the shift of the notion of pets is more exible and diverse.

Phenomena

To discuss the relation between subject and object under this system of avatar, I give out four examples-Desire For Safety,Desire For Conquering, Desire For Attention, and Desire Of Collecting-. The phenomenon 3.0 of owning pets is like having an avatar. By projecting the image of self onto pets, and by reinforcing the personal characteristic through pets, we create the perfect self momentarily. Housing and pets, one being an intimate companion to human, another a coordinator between the environment and human, can be a guidance to each other, and become the PET & CITY strategy of my thesis design.

A system which an avatar produced by the subject becomes a substitute for the absence within the object.

A steady two ways (Circular) sense of safety

Humans need pets to only be affectionate to themselves.

Brand shoes means exclusiveness.

By [combining] the object with the avatar of the subject to elevate the status of the object.

Humans need the warmth and heartbeat of pets to imagine having a real human partner.

A system which the Object simplifies a difficult issue, and replace the relation between the Object and others with the simplified relation between the Object and the Subject.

An expanded sense of conquering

Human needs to gain self esteem through simplifying the difficulty of owning a pet.

By [implanting] the avatar of the subject to satisfy the need.

have an accompany.

A2_Similarity

By [fragmenting] the difficulty of the Subject to create new relation Between the Object and others.object.

I can divide the difficulties and make it perfect.

B1_Supervision

Human needs to build relationship with others through beautiful pets.

A system which replaces the instability of the Object with the stability of the Subject, in order to create the avatar of the Object.

I have many close friends.

An indirect circular desire of showing off

People need to reinforce the beauty in oneself

The Object [needs an enzyme] from the Subject to create new relations with others.

B2_Controllability

Human need pets to present the good condition of oneself

An overlapping diverse desire of collecting

A system which goes through a systematic collecting of things the Object lacks, and becoming the Object.

Human gain a sense of vacation by having a fish tank

Wearing a bikini means am so fit. Applying skin care gives me looks well.

The Object needs [to be reinforced] by the Subject to stay in good condition.

The Object needs the Subject [to pretend] being in good condition.

C1_Identi ability

Human derive a sense of acquiring knowledge by collecting specimen.

C2_Absorbability

I go to the beach and have a wonderful am so knowledgeable.

The Object [derives] the sense of owning the world through the fluctuation of the Subject.

The Object needs to go through [systematic] collection to create a dream.

This project program is separated into residential area –private- and a museum -public-. In these two contrasted programs, I raise off the ground a park for artists and their families, leaving the space underneath for the museum. In addition, a previous maze research is implemented into the circulation patterns to make art spaces less conventional, fostering encountered surprises and improvised moments. These two groups of users are able to share the sunlight, views, and direct contact to nature together, but still providing the required privacy for both of them. In this operation strategy, multiple lifestyles are offered in order to follow their understanding of the domesticity, simultaneously interacting with space and enjoying the various perspectives of art. simultaneously interact with the space and enjoy various perspectives of artwork.

A culture landscape creates by local identity of Taichung city

The art farm is near Tunghai University and it is situated in a residential and commercial mixed area. Interestingly, in this area, visitors and residents go to different places because they have different purposes. Different users, such as residents and visitors, regard certain “object” as node, path or edge differently. Therefore, visitors and residents actually have their own version of maps, all different from others. Since an individual only connects one’s directions and destination interested, the uninterested programs are neglected. This phenomenon refers to the type of maze created by the Shortest Path Algorithm.

In a residential and commercial area, architecture must be multifaceted to provide private and public space to various social groups in a community. The purpose of Art Farm is redefining the dual-characteristic traditional street layout and urban fabric of Taichung. With this aim, I create a maze-alike Art Farm to represent locality and to transform the cultural landscape.

Site analysis

In Taichung, there is a site which belongs to residential and commercial mixed district. This site is in-between the old low housing and new hyper building. Generally, the business area faces main streets and the residential area is usually designed behind or above the business area. When it comes to privacy and publicity, the architects also tend to design it as the general way. However, if the main streets are big enough, the private area could be kept facing the main street because of the far distance. Likewise the public area can be placed behind the main street because the other buildings are right next to it. Therefore, I decide to let the private area face the main street and put the public area in the back in order to match Taiwanese typical landscape.

This project is located in a traditional and developing mixed area. In this complicated urban fabric, I attempt to develop an alternative interface and innovate layout to impove individual privacy in a hostile environment.

Commonly, public space is put on the main street side and private area is placed facing back to preserve privacy. I propose an alternative to this common layout in Taichung by reversing the private-public convention of normal orders to fit unconventional layouts for healthy living. When the street is wide enough, the private area can be kept facing the main street because of the far distance. Likewise, the public area can be placed on the back, close to neighbor buildings. My aim for the wealth center is to provide a place where people can enjoy a physical and mental healthy lifestyle, allowing different levels of privacy to fit their needs.

Low building collapses surface to provide privacy .

Since main streets are big enough, it is possible to provide privacy and scenery for user.

To switch traditional privacy and public orders make public architecture become more private and public..

How to create a permeability of public architecture to match a contemporary urban context?

To shift traditional private and public layout makes public architecture becoming more private and public. us, the permeability should be created from the outside of main street.

With my interest in architectural and environment design, I participated in the Architectural Association Taiwan project Global School in 2013. Instead of observing an environment by only conventional data analysis, our team analyzed how the various type of industries utilize the largest river in the center of Taiwan, the Dajia River; we assess the possibilities to prevent the rural decline.

I was able to further understand that when discussing the value of a land, one needs to reexamine the societal transformations, such as climate change, industry structure change, and demographic transition. When above issues are clearly observed, one could have innovative visions and cultivate a unique yet delicate design for sustainable planning. e work camp made me wonders, how could I select a prototype and structure in this rapidly changing environments, then operate these potential systems as the basis, to design relationships that would apply to future sustainable planning. I believe exible design approach of the environment, is the way to establish the local identity.

is industrial park of cooperation headquarters is located in Taipei, Taiwan, close to Yan-ming Mountain and Keelung River. e site is surrounded by abundant nature resources such as Keelung Waterfront Park and Ming-mei Park, with Huang Dong Boulevard crossing between the site and Ming-mei Park. Usually, in order to create a better access for users, the main entrance of o ce buildings faces the main street (on the south side). However, since the site is next to Mingmei Park, we decided to further bene t the working environment by bringing in the nature view from the park situated on the north side of the site, resulting in a ip of main entrance. us, how to connect the nature landscape and the industrial park of cooperation headquarter is what we highly value in this project.

Site plan and strategy

To ensure better open space and convenient transportation, we place the parking space in the basement, leaving the ground oor open for pedestrians. e ground oor is lled with waterscape and greenbelt, creating an urban scale open area in the center of this industrial park, and provides walking paths which can be enjoyed by the public while working.

Since our team regards connecting the greenbelt of the urban context and the open space of the site as the most vital issue, we studied several site plan layout to nd the best option for a welcoming open space. As a result, we discover that the distinctive "elliptic" shaped site plan is the most functional layout for creating free ow open space.

With additional energy saving strategies applied throughout building systems, this o ce headquarter obtained a LEED gold rating in sustainable design. erefore, we not only created green belt and water belt for landscape but also we created green roof upon Building A. is gesture successfully created horizontal and vertical urban green zones, which mitigated urban island e ect within the site.

e focus on e ciency is extended to the building's sustainable design components, which include green roofs(Building A), water recycling facilities, and re ective cladding materials(Building A, B, C, D). e building's facade, comprised of vertical metal pro les in varying grades and thicknesses, provides shading for the copious glazing, and doubles as an acoustic barrier against nearby railway and street noise.

To extend the e ciency of the architecture, we focus on the design of sustainable components, including green roofs (Building A), water recycling facilities, and re ective cladding materials (Building A, B, C, D). We set green roofs in building A, water recycling facilities, Low-E glass and Low-E vacuum glass in building A, B, C, D. e building's facade was comprised of vertical metal and re ective glass in varying grades and thickness, providing the functions of isolation from radiant heat and also as a sound barrier against nearby railway and street noise.

Lobbies of Building A

We not only focus on creating sustainable design but also on designing an open spatial experience while inside the lobby as if standing outside with the natural environment extending in. In order to achieve this, we choose highly transparent low-e glass as the façade material for the lobby, paired with a solid marble wall as the main feature wall to accentuate the transparency.

Folly (Building C) and waterscape

e Folly (Building C) is located on the circulation cross point and the visual focal point of the o ce headquarters. In order to re ect this landmark characteristic, the folly (Building C) is regarded as a sculpture and shaped in diamond-like geometry. To further achieve the transparent diamond-like geometry, we designed a curtain wall system separated from the oor slab using low-e glass. Given the sculpture characteristic, the folly becomes an anchor point of the site and the waterscape surrounding it.

Tao’s garden

Site introduction

Taoyuan is located approximately 40 km (25 mi) southwest of Taipei, in northern Taiwan, and occupies 1,220 km2 (470 sq mi). It is made up of low-lying plains, interconnected mountains and plateaus. Its shape has a long and narrow southeast-to-northwest trend, with the southeast in the Xueshan Range and the far end on the shores of the Taiwan Strait.

Taoyuan developed from a satellite city of Taipei metropolitan area to be the fourth-largest metropolitan area, and fifth-largest populated city in Taiwan. Since commuting to the Taipei metropolitan area is easy, Taoyuan has seen the fastest population growth of all cities in Taiwan.

We inspired by the local landscape, mountains and plateaus, and created a plateaus-like compound building for kindergarten, daycare center, and NPO office. Tao’s garden located in the main provincial road Fuxing Road, which connects main city in Taiwan. It also locates in a very busy traffic area in Taoyuan. Although we believe that the best place for kids to grow, play and learn is a nature place, still it is hard for kids to play in such a nature environment in the city. Therefore, in this busy and small site, a we decided to create various vertical yards to make the space more flexible for adult and preschool users. By designing vertical yards of different scales and characteristics and through a series of outdoor/semi-outdoor/indoor to connect different users, all users can enjoy work and study.

However, only 1/10 populations of the children study in public kindergarten. As a one of the symbolic kindergar ten in Taoyuan, we decided to create a plateaus-like architecture.

We regard kindergarten as a place where kid can stimulate by the environment, architecture, teachers and classmate and find own potential abilities and interest naturally. Thus, in order to let children go to schools as like going hiking, we design a hill-like architecture. It can combine the architectural space and the courtyard successfully. We look forward to see children make friends through nature and discover new things in such an interesting space.
