The leader in a global E-volution Cooperating Factories Netherlands Safan B.V. was established in 1960 when 5 Dutch factories producing metal working machines and tools joined forces. The name Safan is an acronym for SAmenwerkende FAbrieken Nederland (Cooperating Factories Netherlands). The most important of these factories and the driving force behind the development of Safan was Wila in Lochem. This firm had been active since 1932 as an engineering works for metalworking machinery and tools. That is how far back Safan’s experience goes! From 1980, the development of Safan as an innovator accelerated rapidly, with the introduction of the servohydraulic Safan press brake as a major breakthrough. An even more important milestone was the invention of the servo-electronic press brake in 1995, which marked the start of the E-volution in sheet metal working. Success and expansion The worldwide success of the Original E-Brake and its further development into more powerful machines, made it necessary in 2009 to expand the factory considerably. Today, Safan is a healthy and financially sound business with approximately 100 employees and part of NIVORA Holding B.V. to which BEWO Cutting Systems and Darley B.V also belong.

The E-volution in sheet metal working
The inventor of ‘The original E-Brake’ With its patented servo-electronic press brake, the SMK, Safan in 1995 already laid the foundation for the E-volution in sheet metal working. Here the ‘E’ represents the application of innovative electronic technology. This development gained extra momentum in 2004 with the introduction of the first fully-fledged electronic press brake in the world; the SAFAN E-Brake. A revolutionary machine concept; invented, designed, built, tested and perfected entirely by Safan engineers. Faster bending without crowning The most important innovation of the SAFAN E-Brake is its servo-electronic drive system based on the pulley principle. This ensures a very even distribution of forces, so that in 95% of all cases there is no need for a crowning table. Cycle times are shortened by up

to 30% compared with traditional hydraulic press brakes. Which means much more efficient manufacturing and, therefore, a much more competitive position. Increasing the lead In the meantime, we have developed the machine concept further to cover a wide range of pressing forces and working lengths Because each market segment – from light- to heavy-duty – has its own specific requirements, our engineers have once more thought up many new innovations and solutions. The lead of Safan as an inventor already encompasses several generations of E-brakes!
Impossible to overcome: the lead of the inventor.

The E-standard in Ecology
The Safan E-standards Safan has set new standards for Efficiency, Economy, Ergonomics and Ecology. These E-standard result from a vision that has guided the company since 1995: Safan’s E-volution in sheet metal working. In response to social trends as well as changing requirements in sheet metal working, we have combined these four standards into a single innovative concept.
Bend up to 30% faster: the E-standard in Efficiency.
Sustainable manufacturing We make it possible for manufacturers engaged in sheet metal working, not only to produce more efficiently at lower costs, but also to do so with fewer negative effects for humans and the environment. In this respect, we were well ahead of our time. Now that sustainability is as important as higher productivity, electronic sheet metal working with Safan is more than ever the best choice. Through the absence of harmful oils and energy savings of up to 50% (i.e. lower CO2 emissions), our machines contribute to socially responsible entrepreneurship.

The E-brake series can be divided into three ranges. Light-duty range from 20T-850 mm to 100T-3100 mm uses a modular design concept, resulting in short delivery times and optimum efficiency during manufacturing. This range comprises 7 machines, each available in 3 Q-sizes. With our economical SAFAN E-Brake B-series we can cater even further to our customer’s individual requirements.
Always a customised E-Brake for your production process.
The 20T-850 and 35T-1250 are available as ‘Ergonomic’ versions. These versions offer the convenience of operation while seated and allow the operator and the press brake to operate as one, while achieving the shortest possible cycle times through optimum ergonomics. The medium-duty range comprises two machines: the SAFAN E-Brake 150T-3100 and the SAFAN E-Brake 200T-4100; both available in 3 Q-sizes. The heavy-duty range consists of the SAFAN 300T4100 ‘Dual Drive’. Even at pressing forces of 300 tons there is no need for crowning, thanks to the innovative, patented, ‘Dual Drive’ with dual pulley system, in combination with the equally unique compensating lower beam in the SAFAN E-Brake Dual Drive.

SAFAN H-Brake As the leading specialists in press brakes we obviously also have a wide range of servohydraulic machines, particularly for products that require very high pressing forces and very large working lengths. The Safan H-Brake range covers up to 480T – 7500 mm. SAFAN M-Shear and B-Shear The SAFAN M-Shear and SAFAN B-Shear are unique on account of their innovative hybrid drives: a superior combination of hydraulics and electronics. The system is very energy efficient and low-noise, and uses only a fraction of the usual amount of oil. Automatic cutting-angle setting, torsion-free cutting of narrow strips and scrap separation are other

important advantages. Combined with the Return-to-Sender function, maximum efficiency in sheet metal shearing is achieved. The SAFAN M-Shear comes fully equipped and with versatile optional features within a very large range of some 20 versions. The SAFAN B-Shear offers the same superior technology, but comes in only one competitively priced model (310-6), available with a limited number of optional features. SAFAN R-Brake Safan introduced the first press brake with a robot in 1988. Since then, we have gained much expertise in the automation of bending cells. We have combined this expertise innovatively with our E-Brake technology.
The result is a revolutionary bending cell concept: a press brake on top of which is mounted a robotic arm that moves horizontally along a 6-metre long traverse. The floor in front of the machine thus remains available for positioning sheet feed and discharge tables. This makes the SAFAN R-Brake into the most compact automated bending cell in the 100T class, with a working length of 3100 mm. Programs for the SAFAN R-Brake can be written off-line using Safan’s Robo wave simulation software. This drastically reduces the set-up times for the bending cell.

Continuous innovation Continuous innovation is Safan’s core activity. Our innovative strength is directed both at developing entirely new machines and systems, and at perfecting existing machines and accessories. We develop all our innovations in-house. The know-how of our R&D department covers all aspects of construction, control and software, and is combined with unique expertise in the fields of press-brake bending, cutting and (automated) sheet handling. Working toward integrated solutions How will the e-volution in sheet metal working progress? In our vision, the provision of integrated manufacturing solutions will play an increasingly important role. This will mainly concern the integration of machine control, automation and communication. In this development too, Safan is setting the pace.
Everything under E-control For 15 years, the SAFAN TS control system was the most functional and intuitive Man-Machine interface in sheet metal working. Only Safan itself was able to improve on it with a new generation of touch-screen control systems, the Safan E-Control. This system is prepared for web-based communication such as online diagnoses and loading software updates from the web. By monitoring and analysing operating data online, it becomes possible to optimise the production process remotely.
Safan has won several awards for innovation; for its SAFAN I-Brake concept for instance.
The E-standard in Ergonomics
Bending cell automation; a Safan speciality With our automated bending cells – including the standard SAFAN R-Brake – we offer integrated solutions for your production process. Not only the bending cell, but other operations such as punching and spot welding can be automated integrally, as can the entire routing of sheet metal material. This provides the producer considerable flexibility in manufacturing new products or making changes to the production process. We also offer flexibility in linking up with external systems and the choice of robot. Our Robowave off-line programming is a sure-fire guarantee for a maximum return. In this connection: We develop and realise turn-key solutions for cutting and press-brake bending with guaranteed cycle times.
