Trust us to educate you with straightforward Eco-Responsible™ information so you can make an informed choice on products and services. Since there are so many ways to be Eco-Responsible™and it is not always clear what makes one approach better than the next, our Eco-Responsible™ Numbering System Logos will quickly inform you what qualities we feel make a product eco-friendly.
Recycled: We only make recycling claims that count – when it’s made from “post-consumer” material* (like plastic, paper, or metal). That means material that was destined for disposal was rescued and turned into new product. It tends to reduce the need for more chemicals, energy use, and raw materials – a lighter footprint on the earth.
Reduced Material Usage: We will identify when a product is designed with less material than the past,* what those improvements are, and what portion of the product is improved. Product with less material or packaging means less energy usage, less chemical or other raw material used, and less to dispose of.
Bio-plastic: We will tell you what percent of a product is bio-plastic and never knowingly make misleading claims about an entire product being “biodegradable” when part of it – the ink, dye, or a component – remains behind. Bio-plastic is plastic made from plants (like corn), not from oil. That means less dependence on oil and less greenhouse gases from oil. Only 100% bio-plastic breaks down under favorable soil conditions rather than lasting forever. Bio-plastic is still a new material and demand is increasing exponentially. That puts pressure on the availability of the material, so we are adding it gradually to assure that our supply is reliable.
Material Substitution: We will tell you when we replace materials with environmentally-superior ingredients and indicate what portion is replaced. Ingredients count. We are seeking to replace standard materials and production processes with environmentally-superior materials and processes. Examples include replacing standard oil-based plastics and fabrics with bio-plastic or post-consumer recycled plastics and fabrics.
Organic: When a portion of our product is organic by this standard, we will tell you what portion. For Prime to call a whole product organic, 100% of the ingredients must be plant-derived materials raised organically* (according to standards by the State of California, which are the most stringent). Organic means not using most chemical pesticides and fertilizers, and not using geneticallyengineered organisms. Natural vs. Synthetic: No-one can decide for you which is greener. Prime can – and will – let you know when a product is made from natural ingredients, and which ingredients are natural. This is one of those cases where honest information shows that it’s not clear cut which is better for the environment, product from the earth (“natural,” like plant, animal, or mineral products) or product created through chemical or other processes. Reusable: We will tell you when a product was created with the intent to be used in place of a disposable item. How green that makes the product is up to you. This is another case where honest information shows that it’s not clear cut which is better for the environment. In many cases, it is better if a product can be reused rather than disposed of. In many cases, it is not. The science is unclear and depends on the product, the number of disposables it replaces, the energy that is burned, and the environmental impact of production and disposal.

Energy Substitution: We will let you know when a product is created with – or uses – greener energy and what makes it greener. What type of energy is used matters. It matters a lot. Coal and oil both create greenhouse gases, habitat destruction from drilling and mining, and air and water pollution (as well as dependence on unstable or unfriendly exporting countries). Nuclear energy creates nuclear waste – with its risk to health and vulnerability to misuse. Solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal power create neither greenhouse gases, pollution, nor radioactive wastes. While no energy creation is free of environmental impact (millions of solar panels still have to be made in factories), we prefer solar and wind power, and to a lesser extent hydro. Energy Reduction: Wherever we can identify product created using less energy than before, we will tell you, and tell you what we know about it. Reducing energy usage reduces environmental impact, whether through efficient use (compact fluorescent light bulbs) or elimination of use (turn the lights out!). It takes a lot of energy to operate buildings, run production processes, and move goods. Reduced Packaging: As we reduce the packaging of our products – coming into our factory or out of it as part of the final product – we will tell you. Packaging is something that almost always is disposed of, and very often packaging can be largely designed out of a product, if not entirely.
