Sm@rt Artwork Guidelines
Smart Codes
Sm@rt Artwork Guidelines define the quality criteria that determine the readiness of these common artwork formats. The guidelines cover both vector and raster art files.
Sm@rt Codes help you quickly find out the minimum artwork requirements at just a glance. See chart following.
Vector Artwork Files – Must be saved in the Postscript Format and contain no Postscript errors, stray points or colors assigned inconsistently to our published requirements. Note: Due to the wide range of native software packages, please check our acceptable file formats to determine the best format for delivery of your vector files. Design elements must meet Tranter Graphics Published Minimums (TGPM) for line thickness. Failure to do so may compromise the final imprint quality. If the vector file contains any linked (placed) raster images, these images must meet TGPM for resolution when rendered at 100% actual imprint size and must be submitted with the original vector file. Raster Artwork Files – All raster elements and art files must be sized to 100% or larger than the actual imprint size. Raster images must meet or exceed TGPM when rendered at the actual imprint size. Raster elements must be submitted in the proper color space (RGB or CMYK) as published. Acrobat (PDF) Files – PDF files created from vector files must retain the editing capabilities that were used to create them (e.g. Illustrator or Freehand).
Tranter’s products are grouped into two simple Sm@rt Codes. IS describes all products, except our 4-color process beverage napkins, which utilizes IC. Please see below. The first character in the Sm@rt Code is a number that describes the format (vector vs. raster) necessary for artwork readiness. Due to the fact that vector images can easily be converted to raster images, but not the other way around, most properly prepared vector files can be used for artwork in categories 1-5. See grid following for each code. The second character in the Sm@rt Code is a letter that describes the color space necessary for artwork readiness. Sm@rt Codes exist to avoid errors by answering questions about the graphic requirements that apply to specific products. CODE

Properly prepared PDF files are often suitable as proofs.

Fonts – Fonts used in the production of art files should be converted to curves (outlines) prior to submission. If future typesetting will be required, the original font files must be included with the artwork file to be used on our platform. Artwork Software – Microsoft Word and Publisher are useful tools but are not capable of producing art files of a quality necessary for imprinting purposes.

Smart E-mail Guidelines Subject – Every e-mail message has a “subject” that should contain your distributor company name and the purchase order number associated with your artwork file attachment. Signatures – Don’t be anonymous! We need to know who is sending the artwork and the e-mail reply address is often misleading or insufficient. Be sure to sign your e-mail message with all of these details: • The full name of the sender or contact regarding the artwork • Your company name • The physical address of your company and/or the sender, if different from your company (for shipment of proofs, return of disks, etc.) • Your e-mail address (for any reply message) • Telephone and fax numbers • Your industry ID numbers, e.g. UPIC, ASI, etc. Message Body – Take the time to make your e-mail message as detailed as possible to avoid confusion and delays. It helps to state the number of attached files, as in these examples: • “Enclosed are two artwork files, one for each side of the cup.” • “Enclosed is one ZIP archive containing three font files, one Photoshop image, two CorelDraw illustrations and my Quark document.” Compression – Before sending any artwork file, please use compression software to protect against damage in transit. Compression reduces large files to decrease transfer time, but the most important benefit is the way it encloses the delicate artwork files inside a file type that was designed for proper transmittal. The two most popular compression formats are “.zip” and “.sit.” (Don’t confuse “zip” with the popular Iomega brand disks of the same name.) Each compression format is also capable of creating selfexpanding archives with the file extension “.exe” (for Windows) and “.sea” (for Macintosh).
Useful Terms Vector Artwork – Stores information about shapes and lines. They can be scaled easily without producing the “stair-step” edges you will see in pixel-based (raster) images. They adapt to the resolution of any output device and are considered to be resolution independent. Vector artwork is produced by programs like Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia FreeHand and CorelDraw.

Raster Artwork – Artwork and images that are defined by a checkerboard pattern, similar to viewing mosaic tiles. Raster images are limited by the number of pixels and cannot be enlarged without producing noticeable jagged, stair-stepped edges. They are produced by digital cameras, scanners, and programs like Adobe PhotoShop and Corel PhotoPaint (among others). Spot Color – Solid, generally flat fields of color. Used for silk screening, where a printer can lay down several solid areas of color to produce multi-colored artwork; also used to identify additional colors in a four-color process file or print job. Color Space – Refers to the use of color in an imprint or graphic file. Defined for our purposes as spot color, no color, RGB or CMYK. RGB – Colors defined as a combination of three colors: red, green and blue. CMYK – Colors defined using a combination of four colors: cyan, magenta, yellow and black; often referred to as four-color process. Resolution – The measurement of quality (pixels per inch in file or dots per inch in output). Low-res images may be as low as 72 dpi (or less). High-res images may be as high as 600 dpi (or more). Bitmap – A non-vector, rasterized computer image file type with file extension “.bmp”. Color scheme can be RGB color, grayscale or bitmapped. Outline/Curves – Text in an art file without the use of fonts, to create the shape of the letters, therefore eliminating any font problems. Links – Links are files that are connected to the main layout file and where the main file gets the information that is placed into it. Example: you create a new Quark document, you place a photograph into the Quark document, the Quark document gets the photograph from the file. If the photograph is edited when the Quark document is updated, the photograph in Quark is also updated. Gradients – Fading from one tonal value to another.
Imprint Areas Imprint Areas – There are standard imprint areas for each item listed in our catalog. Unless specified, we will enlarge or reduce your image to fit within these areas. Due to the fact that some images are not a square, we will reduce or enlarge your image to one of the sizes listed. Example: image area is 3”x 3”; your image is 1 1/2” x 3”. The image cannot be enlarged because the 3” dimension is as large as possible. If this is an issue, please call your customer service rep (CSR) for other options.
Wrap Imprint Areas – Available on most cups. However, if the logo is too tall, a wrap image will not be possible. Also note that full wrap is unfeasible. There must be a 1” space due to our printing process. Please call your CSR for wrap sizes.
Fine Detail Printing Lines in Artwork – We recommend setting all positive line weights to a minimum of 1 point in order to avoid the possibility of filling in. If your artwork contains these reversed lines, please set those to a minimum of 2 points for best results.
Half-Tones and Screens – Half-tones and screens print with a choppy/dotty look due to Tranter Graphics printing method. Images with gradients and lighter shades of colors have a tendency to print as a rough transition of dots. Screen tones and gradients that are set below 20% are not guaranteed to hold on the printing plate. Tones and gradients that are set above 40% may fill and print as 100% when on press. It is suggested that all half-tone segments of an image be outlined with a solid thin line around the edge, as gradients and tones look jagged around edges. Screens do not print as they appear on a computer screen, inkjet or laser printout. Half-tones and photos are not guaranteed to print well due to the variation of tones and gradients in each individual photo. We recommend line drawn artwork rather than photos in all cases but placemats. $55.00 (X) per hour art charge will apply if artwork is altered to remove half-tones or screens.
Small Fonts – All text that is submitted under a size of 8 points may not print well and fill in when printing. Please create your artwork with text that meets our requirements as noted in the chart below. Some fonts have thinner lines than others, each piece of artwork will be looked at on a case by case basis.
Artwork Charges Hourly Artwork Charges – Camera-ready, color-separated artwork is always preferred to ensure accuracy and avoid misinterpretations. Changes will be limited to minor adjustments. In the event minor changes, color separations, photo rescreens, curves, etc. are needed, the charge will be $55.00 (X) per hour. Clip Art – Clip art images are available. If you require clip art research, the fee will be $20.00 (V) to research and process it. Paper proofs are required.

Common Digital Artwork Errors Font Substitution – This means the customer has the font installed on his/her computer but Tranter Graphics does not. The font gets replaced with our default font which usually does not resemble the required font. Missing Links – When a file is created and an image is placed into a file it must be embeded not linked to the Illustrator file. If the placed image is linked to the Illustrator file and the linked file is not included with the Illustrator document, we need the link or the link should be embeded. Rastorized Images – All rastorized images must be sent to us with a resolution of 300 dpi or greater (we prefer 600 dpi). All multi colored rastorized images must be sent to us as pre-color separated artwork. Corrupt Files – When your file is flagged as corrupt by the Tranter Graphics art department, please re-send art in a compressed format such as zip or stuffit file in order to eliminate this problem. Corrupt files are files that are either incomplete or incorrect. When creating electronic art files, please set colors in PANTONE solid uncoated format. If we need to convert the file to PMS colors, there will be a charge of $55.00 (X) per hour.
Electronic Artwork Specifications E-mailing Artwork – TGI has two e-mail addresses for artwork. • Standard service or Speedy 16 orders: art@trantergraphics.com • Rush 24-hour service: speedsterart@trantergraphics.com Be sure to include your company name, phone number and purchase order number. If this is not provided, Tranter Graphics will not be responsible for matching up the art with the order. File Formats – MAC: The following programs are acceptable: • Adobe Illustrator CS3 (preferred) in .ai or .eps format • Adobe Photoshop 6.0 • StreamLine 4.0 • Quark Xpress 4.0 • PageMaker 6.5 • Freehand 8.0

PC: The following programs are acceptable: • Adobe Illustrator 9.0 • Corel PhotoPaint Files sent in TIFF, JPEG or Bitmap cannot be altered – only viewed and used “as is”. Mailing in Artwork – The only acceptable mailed in artwork is a high quality, line art, solid spot color format. Art must be separated and cannot contain any screens or half-tones. Artwork that contains half-tones or screen tints must be saved to a disk and mailed in or e-mailed directly to our pre-press department. Color Variations – Due to color variations in computer screens, we cannot match colors to your file without a PMS color, standard color or paper color swatch. We cannot match the color on a computer screen or ink jet color printout. Color Separations – Multi-colored artwork should be sent in a format where separations can be done. If artwork cannot be easily separated, there will be a charge of $55.00 (X) per hour to separate your artwork. Artwork Verification – For your protection, we require that any artwork e-mailed or sent in via disk be accompanied by a hard copy to verify accuracy. If no hard copy is provided, the order will be scheduled for a paper proof. Standard charges will apply. Production time begins after receipt of written proof approval. Acceptable Medias – CD, DVD, Zip Disk, Floppy Disk and/or e-mailed. Sometimes high-quality digital images are not always available. In such cases we request camera-ready artwork. This is 100% black ink on a white paper printed at 600 dpi or higher. A black-and-white photocopy or inkjet printout is NOT camera-ready art. Any other artwork types require extra work from our pre-press depart-ment. These files are NOT considered “print-ready” and are subject to art charges of $55.00 (X) per hour.
Stock Typestyles Typestyles – Listed below are a few stock typestyles from which to choose.
Glossary of Terms 1/c – One color 2/c – Two spot colors. 3/c – Three spot colors. 4/c – Four spot colors. 4/c Process – The printing process that creates the illusion of thousands of colors by the use of only 4 colors, cyan, magenta, yellow, black. Bitmap – A non-vector, rasterized computer image file type with file extension “.bmp”, color scheme can be RGB color, grayscale, or bitmapped. Bitmapped – A black and white image with no gray tonal values, file type does not have to be “.bmp”. CMYK – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, blacK – The colors that the printing industry uses to print process colors.
Pixels – square blocks of information that include color or tonal information for each pixel. PPI – (Pixels Per Inch) – The amount of pixels per inch in a computer file, this measurement defines the resolution of an image, four color non vector images need to be at least at 300ppi and bitmapped images need to be at least at 600ppi for best quality. Rasterized Art – Art that is defined by pixels. Resolution – The image quality of a computer file indicated by number of PPI (pixels per inch), if too low of a resolution, the file will print very rough looking, otherwise know as pixelated. Reversed Text – Where the text itself is not printed in ink but the area around the text is printed. RGB – Red, Green, Blue – The colors your computer monitor uses to create the colors that you see on the screen.
Font – A computer file that consists of shapes that represent letters of the alphabet along with numbers and other characters entered by use of a computer keyboard (type style and or look of type).
Spot Color – A premixed (hand mixed) ink color.
Gradients – Fading from one tonal value to another.
Vector Art – Art that is defined not by pixels but by points to create the illusion of lines. Also, each entity of a piece of vector art is editable, sometimes known as “clickable art”.
Grayscale – A color scheme that consists of gray tonal values of ink and has no color just (black and white tones). Links – Mainly used in Adobe Pagemaker and QuarkXpress but is sometimes used in Adobe Illustrator. Links are files that are connected to the main layout file and is where the main file gets the information that is placed into it. Example: you create a new quark document, you place a photograph into the quark document, the quark document gets the photograph from the file, if the photograph is edited, when the quark document is updated the photo-graph in quark is also updated. LPI – (Lines Per Inch/dots per inch/line screen) – The amount of dots in a straight line of one inch of a halftone screen, examples on previous page shows example of 10 lpi at a 45 degree angle and 65 lpi at a 45 degree angle, lpi on most products are at 65 lpi and go up to 120 lpi on 4 color process printing but lpi is determined by what line screen that particular press can hold. Missing Links – Where the original placed file is not included with layout file, therefore layout file has no reference and will print incorrectly.
Tones – A % value of a color to create an illusion of a lighter color.
Color Space – Refers to the use of color in an imprint or graphic file. Defined for our purposes as spot color, no color, RGB or CMYK.
Ordering Specifications New Customer & Inactive Accounts – A current credit study is done on all new accounts and an annual review is done on all established active and inactive accounts. Payment Terms – Credit card is the preferred method to ensure orders are expedited and paperwork is accurate. VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discover are all accepted. Authorization will be obtained at inception of order. Actual billing will occur at shipping time to ensure proper freight is charged. TGI does not pass on a handling fee for credit card orders. Other acceptable payment terms are 1%10net30 (after accounts are established), company check or money orders. Order Cancellation – $35.00 (V), plus all costs incurred through the date the factory receives cancellation notice.

Ink Color Changes – Due to press stops, the following charges will apply when an ink color change is requested:

Printing Dies/Screen Charge Printing Dies & Screens – All new orders require a printing die or screen. Different artwork (color, copy, or location) requires separate dies and screens. Repeat Orders – Repeat orders within the last 3 years do not incur a screen or die charge unless artwork has changed.
Production (All products printed in USA) Registration – There will be a variation of 2-4% (1/16” to 1/8”) on 2-color registration. Press proofs are strongly recommended on artwork with close registration. 100% registration cannot be held. Over/Underruns – Tranter Graphics adheres to printing industry standards of +/- 5% over/underruns. Exact quantities are always a goal; however, occasionally a slight variation occurs. You will not be charged for more than 5% overruns, and we will not ship less then a 5% underrun unless you are advised.
Production Times Production time begins upon receipt of purchase order, approved artwork, matching hard copy or written proof approval, inventory confirmation and credit approval. 500 Line – All 500 Line quantity orders are normally shipped in 5 business days from receipt of order, approved artwork and credit approval. Due to the seasonal fluctuation in production schedules, 5-day service is not always possible. Please check with your CSR for current production times. High Lines – All High Lines orders within catalog quantities are normally shipped in 10 business days from receipt of order, approved artwork and credit approval. When a proof is involved, standard production time will begin the date of written proof approval. Due to the seasonal fluctuation in production schedules, 10-day service is not always possible. Please check with your CSR for current production times. Repeat Orders – Lead time for exact repeat orders within the last 3 years is only 3 days for 500 Line and 6 days for High Lines. Rush Services – 24-hour, 3- and 6-day express service is available on select products. See page 3. Other products may be available for 24-hour, 3- and 6-day express service. Rush service may not be guaranteed during busy seasons. Please contact your customer service representative for pricing and availability.
Standard Packaging Items are packaged in high quality, sealed polybags. Standard packaging quantities are listed in product charts on each page.

Proofs
If your order does not specify a service, the best method will be chosen for you at the time of shipping. • Split destination shipments – $6.00 (X) per location, per item. • COD shipments – $9.00 (Z) per carton, plus UPS freight and applicable COD charges. • Consignee billed freight/third party billing – Please provide account number to be billed. Charge for this service – $2.00 (Z) per box. Freight Rates – Freight quotes are for estimating purposes only, based on circumstances at the time of the request. Final costs are controlled by carrier’s rates and changes that are made. We are not responsible for any freight differences at the time of shipping.
Paper Proofs – Black and white paper proof faxed or e-mailed – $5.00 (X). Lead-time is approximately 1-2 working days after receipt of artwork. Additional charge of $5.00 (X) for each revision.
Freight Requirements – All pertinent shipping, special packaging, special labeling and ship-to addresses must be supplied at the onset of the order. Additional charges will apply if changes are made once the order is in production.
Virtual Proofs – An electronic sample of the product with the artwork placed on the item is available for a charge of $25.00 (X). Printing quality will differ from the virtual proof. An actual press proof is recommended when imprint quality needs to be examined.
Will Advise Orders – Customers must supply shipping address within 72 hours from the time production is complete. If the information is still missing after 72 hours, the order will be shipped directly to the customer.
Press Proofs/Spec Samples – On actual product: • 500 Line – $18.00 (X) per color, plus applicable die and/or screen charges. • High Lines – $55.00 (X) per color & per panel, plus applicable die and/or screen charges. • 4-Color Process – First proof at no-charge. Additional proofs – $85.00 (X) per color. Press proofs for sets will be charged standard fees per item, per color/copy, according to total quantity of each item. If no changes are made to the proof, no additional die/screen charges will be incurred on the actual order. When a proof is requested, standard production time will begin the date of written proof approval.

Restocking Only blank merchandise will be accepted for a return. There will be a 30% restocking fee based on price of original product. All freight will be the responsibility of the customer. If any damage occurs during shipping, customer is accountable for the product and for filing a claim with the shipper.

Standard Ink Colors The below corresponding PMS colors are for reference of standard colors only. An exact match to these colors is not guaranteed and can vary within two shades. The standard colors come direct from an ink mill and are mixed in large runs. Due to this, you may see a slight dye lot variation from run to run. However, there will be no variation during a single run. For all other colors, or if you need a consistent match from run to run, see ink color matching below.
Ink Color Matching Color matching charge is $25.00 (V). There is no extra charge for using standard ink colors. Please provide a PMS # and we will match it to within one shade on white items only. PMS matches cannot be guaranteed on any color substrates. We DO NOT GUARANTEE exact PMS matches on colored items due to the variations in substrate, light source interpretation and ink supply. We recommend providing a PMS color swatch to match at press. An imprint with metallic ink must be printed 100%. Half-tone screens cannot be printed using metallic inks. Neon inks available in 500 Line napkins and certain cups. A PMS match charge will apply. Please call for availability.

White and Light Ink Limitations – Napkins are printed using “non-opaque” inks, therefore light inks (especially white) on colored napkins will not print true to color. The “masking” of the two colors (ink color & napkin color) will occur, producing an undesirable result. EXAMPLE: A WHITE IMPRINT on a BLACK NAPKIN will result in the imprint looking GRAY. Accordingly, a WHITE IMPRINT on a RED NAPKIN will result in the imprint looking PINK. It is highly recommended that metallic inks or dark inks, such as black, be used on deep-tone & mid-tone colored napkins. Ink color matching cannot be achieved on colored napkins. On plastic glasses, we can use a heavy opaque ink to give the white ink a look of a bright white, which will cover the background of the colored glass. See examples here.
4-Color Process All 4-color process jobs will require a press proof unless a product acceptance agreement is signed. All 4-color process orders will require a printed color laser proof from the customer in order to match colors as desired. 4-color process printing on tissue will not be as true as 4-color process printing on paper. See printing dies and proofs on page 52-53.
Silver, Gold, and White Foil Printing Gold, Silver and White Foil Printing – On napkins, foil printing is available at an extra charge of $.08 (Z). Foil die charge is $50.00 (V) You must allow 15 production days for foil printing on new orders. High Lines pricing is not available when using foil printing; 500 Line pricing is the best offered. Characteristics of Gold, Silver and White Foil Printing – Foil is applied to paper napkins using heat and pressure. Because of the texture of the tissue in napkins and the heat process, a certain amount of bleeding and fill-in can occur when logos contain fine detail. If a logo contains fine details, especially in a reverse logo, we recommend ink printing, which will hold the detail much better. If there is any doubt, please contact your representative for an opinion. A sample of the logo may be requested in certain instances. Also, since foil is stamped on the napkins, larger solids of foil printing may result in flaking of the foil when folded. Maximum image area on all foil jobs is 3 1/2” x 3 1/2”, regardless of napkin size. If any of these limitations are a problem, please request a sample prior to production.
Impressive Imprints
Coasters
Debossed, or “Impressive”, printing is available on all 500 Line napkins (white and colors). Impressive imprints are stamped into the tissue, with no ink color, leaving behind an impression of elegance and subtleness. Pricing is the same as ink imprints, however the die charge is $50 (V).
Coasters offer a variety of ways to advertise in both square and round shapes. The 80 point and 110 point coasters provide a heavier weight for a stronger impression. Although these heavier coasters are normally not reused in a commercial setting, when used as an advertising piece on someone’s desk at work or home,they often make a lasting impression for days or weeks to come.
High Lines pricing is not available on Impressive napkins; 500 Line pricing is the best offer available. See page 10 for samples and more information.
Product Colors The pictures in this catalog are representative of the product colors and ink colors, but photography colors could vary from actual products. If exact colors are critical, please request an actual sample prior to production. Due to dye lot variations in the paper pulp, recycling and plastic resin mixing processes, the actual color of the product could vary slightly from run to run. We recommend that if your product must match exactly, please order it all within the same run. We do guarantee that there will be no variation in product color within the same run.

Standard Layout Standard layouts are as follows. If your layout is different than this, please indicate on your order. Crop marks on artwork will NOT be used for placement purposes. Napkins – Beverage, luncheon and 1/4-fold dinner napkins will be laid out and printed on the lower part of the diamond. Shadow shows where napkin opens. 1/8-fold dinner napkins will be printed just above the border horizontally. Shadow shows where napkin opens.
Cups – Printed on the upper portion of the cup just above the center unless otherwise specified.
Stirrers and Piks – Imprint area on stirrers can be on the top and/or shank of the stirrer. Piks can only be printed on the top portion. Standard positioning is shown below.
