The Telegraph

Welcome to our 2015–16 presentations at Saffron Hall, our second full season of world-class events. Saffron Hall’s famed acoustic is proving to be both intimate and powerful, and I have invited an unrivalled roster of artists and ensembles this season. It is difficult to pick out highlights, but I am particularly excited to welcome two international groups, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and Bach Collegium Japan to the hall. Britten Sinfonia hits a blue note with their intriguing jazz collaboration with Eddie Gomez, and we will be working once again with Saffron Screen – this time on the classic Hitchcock film Psycho with live orchestra. We are currently experiencing a golden age of the violin with many virtuoso exponents worldwide. We celebrate this with a series of concerts that feature the artistry of Leonidas Kavakos, Maxim Vengerov, Nicola Benedetti and Joshua Bell playing some of the finest repertoire written for their instrument. Saffron Hall is located within Saffron Walden County High School, which has a thriving performing arts culture. This season we celebrate young talent through many different participatory activities, including a packed day of masterclasses with Nicola Benedetti and an immersive residency with The Brodsky Quartet. Hundreds of primary school children will come together for Aldeburgh Music’s ‘Friday afternoons’ singing event, and we are especially excited to be working with over 200 children on a newly commissioned opera based on local legend The Glass Knight. If Saffron Hall is inspiring you to dust off your old clarinet or warm up your vocal chords, why not get involved? Be part of this brochure next season by joining one of our fabulous local groups, Saffron Walden Choral Society, Saffron Walden Symphony Orchestra or Saffron Opera Group, who all continue to flourish in the hall. Become one of our volunteers helping at our concerts and learning & participation events, or simply come and enjoy the stunning artistry at Saffron Hall. I do hope you will join us for what promises to be a superb season. More events are still to be announced, so look out for the spring brochure later this year. We look forward to welcoming you. Angela Dixon Chief Executive, Saffron Hall
