Welcome Welcome to our Spring 2020 programme - there are plenty of surprises and delights in store! Any artist who has performed in Saffron Hall invariably itches to return, and there are still so many who want to come for the first time, all of them eager to experience the superb acoustic and warm reception of our audience. In the Autumn we welcomed the London Philharmonic Orchestra as Resident Orchestra, and their performances so far have been electrifying. Don’t miss their Spring concert which features Sir Antonio Pappano conducting the monumental Busoni piano concerto - a rare opportunity to hear this astonishing piece. Our other Resident Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, return with one of the country’s most celebrated tenors, Ian Bostridge, in a role that could have been written for him, the madwoman in Britten’s Curlew River. 2020 is Beethoven’s 250th birthday year and naturally we should consider his remarkable legacy.

Saffron Hall’s homage includes concerts with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, an all-Beethoven programme from Midori and Festival Strings Lucerne, a recital from the highly respected Beethoven interpreter John Lill and a Beethoven symphony - from memory - from Aurora Orchestra. Other highlights include debuts from Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Chineke!, an orchestra championing diversity within classical music; Wigmore Hall favourites La Serenissima; folk royalty Fairport Convention; the Tallis Scholars with the incomparable Spem in alium, and jazz sensation Jacqui Dankworth. We are also delighted to welcome back the National Youth Orchestra, the Glenn Miller Orchestra and the Alexander Whitley Dance Company. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our amazing Saffron Hall community: the staff, volunteers and audience members who make this one of the fastest growing and most successful arts organisations in the country. Angela Dixon Chief Executive

Welcome in the New Year with a stunning selection of much-loved favourites. BBC Young Musician winner Martin James Bartlett makes his Saffron Hall debut in Rachmaninov’s Variations on a theme of Paganini and the BBC Concert Orchestra conjure up the Viennese spirit with Strauss waltzes and Mozart’s A Little Night Music.

Surely you jest? A Beethoven inspired concert with a difference from the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Portuguese powerhouse conductor Joana Carneiro. The ‘Eroica’ symphony blew classical music sky-high and the Grosse Fuge still sounds modern after nearly 200 years. John Adams’ Absolute Jest – starring the Doric Quartet – absorbs musical artifacts, saluting Beethoven the way he would have wanted: with one enormous musical joke.
