Welcome Welcome to our 2019/20 Autumn programme. Last season we celebrated our fifth birthday and looked back on all we had achieved together since the Hall opened. Now we look forward with eager anticipation to the many possibilities and opportunities that lie before us.

In an exciting development for orchestral music lovers, this season we welcome the London Philharmonic Orchestra who will join Britten Sinfonia as Resident Orchestra. Between these two world-class ensembles we will be delivering some of most interesting and superbly delivered orchestral programmes in the country.

The London Philharmonic’s first concert as Resident will be under the baton of Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski and in their second we welcome back conductor Marin Alsop who will lead the orchestra and our own Saffron Walden Choral Society in a performance of Belshazzar’s Feast. Britten Sinfonia brings local piano hero Benjamin Grosvenor

back to Saffron Hall and a fantastic new collaboration between two giants of contemporary culture, Steve Reich and Gerhard Richter.

Other Autumn highlights include Gabriel, a dramatised concert featuring The English Concert and super-star trumpeter Alison Balsom along with a host of singers and actors, the return of Iestyn Davies and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and Aurora with Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique – from memory! In the world of jazz, we welcome two legends, Courtney Pine and Jan Garbarek and if you love Christmas then do not miss our seasonal offering which includes the BBC Singers with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and The Sixteen performing Britten’s Ceremony of Carols.

It is easy to engage with what we know. As we build up the range of events on offer at Saffron Hall, I would urge to try something different this Autumn - you may surprise yourself!

The legendary jazz hero strips everything back as he takes to the stage with his bass clarinet accompanied by Zoe Rahman, the Mercury nominated and MOBO award-winning pianist as they revisit standards from their album Song (The Ballad Book). Few great composers strike as many sparks off each other as Haydn, Beethoven and Brahms, and Paul Lewis’ exploration of their piano music has been one of the highlights of recent seasons at Saffron Hall. Now, this “masterly” pianist (The Independent) reaches journey’s end with Haydn at his darkest, Brahms’ autumnal Op.117, and – to crown it all – the boundless invention and wit of Beethoven’s mighty Diabelli Variations.

Marcus du Sautoy knows how to make numbers dance, and as the Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science, he has a way with words too. Today he engages both head and heart, joining the Oxford Philharmonic to explore the numerical magic that lies beneath the gorgeous, glittering surfaces of music by Bartók, Debussy and Stravinsky.

The Unthanks invite us into the darkly passionate world of Emily Brontë, with a song cycle bearing all the quiet beauty they are known and loved for. Commissioned to mark Brontë’s 200th birthday, Unthanks composer Adrian McNally has turned ten of Brontë’s poems into song, performed with bandmates Rachel and Becky Unthank. A unique collaboration between a literary great and one of the most innovative and critically acclaimed bands working today.

The Bookshop Band will play an opening set that compliments The Unthanks’ performance.

Reich Pulse Reich Runner Reich/Richter (European premiere tour) Film by Gerhard Richter and Corinna Belz, music by Steve Reich Steve Reich and Gerhard Richter – two giants of contemporary culture – come together in a major collaboration with Britten Sinfonia, a cinematic exploration of Richter’s intense, abstract painting 946-3.

The new work, combining original music and digital visuals, and performed alongside two of Reich’s most iconic minimalist masterpieces, is set to be one of the most significant moments in contemporary art this year.
