Concerts & Events

Autumn 2021/22

Welcome Welcome to our autumn season. Over the last year we have been privileged to welcome some of the world’s finest artists and ensembles to the hall and we have experienced many special concerts at a time when other concert halls have been unable to open. I have some very special memories of those concerts and how the power of live music supported audiences and performers through some very dark days.

But now we are looking forward, and I am delighted to present an autumn filled with events that will bring the Saffron Hall Community back together. Some of the concerts have been rescheduled from last year and some are brand new. As always, we try to welcome back as many of our favourite performers as possible whilst also introducing new artists.

The Sixteen and Britten Sinfonia, 2016 © Roger King

Our Resident Orchestras, the London Philharmonic with Principal Conductor Edward Gardner and Britten Sinfonia, make a welcome return together with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, The Sixteen, Sir András Schiff, Kathryn Tickell, Courtney Pine, the Glenn Miller Orchestra and Paul Lewis. And for the first time we welcome opera stars Joyce DiDonato and Jamie Barton, early music group La Serenissima, legendary jazz singer Jacqui Dankworth and talks from broadcaster Michael Portillo and the Yorkshire Shepherdess Amanda Owen.

Inevitably, we will have to continue to be flexible about how we safely deliver concerts and events to audiences at Saffron Hall. We are grateful to you, our audience, for your patience and good humour as we work through the Government’s ever-changing guidance. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Saffron Hall staff and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to keep Saffron Hall running even during lockdowns we were releasing filmed concerts. On behalf of myself and them, we look forward to welcoming you back to Saffron Hall this autumn. Angela Dixon Chief Executive

Keeping you safe

Mark Simpson Geysir Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Serenade for 13 Wind Instruments

Kathryn Tickell started playing the Northumbrian Pipes at the age of nine, and now – well, in the words of Living Tradition, “To say that Kathryn plays pipes is like saying that Shakespeare was a bit of a writer”. Today, though, she’s just one member of The Darkening: an all-star folk band rooted in the tales and melodies of Northumberland, but with an international outlook and an unmistakably contemporary attitude.

Britten Sinfonia Mozart Winds

Resident Orchestra Britten Sinfonia returns for the autumn series with an illuminating pairing of old and new in a relaxed setting for audiences of all ages to enjoy. Mozart’s ambitious Serenade for 13 Wind Instruments brings alive each instrument’s unique characteristics, while Geysir by Mark Simpson (written as a response to Mozart’s Serenade) is just as atmospheric.
