Appreciating the large strides that have been made in general aviation avionics in the past ten years, the South African TBM owner-pilot initially considered trading his 10 year old TBM 850 in for a newer TBM, but this aircraft had served its owner-pilot very well and parting with her was a difficult decision. And so the decision was made to upgrade the 850’s capability with the latest and most capable Instrument Flight systems, and particularly to bring the aircraft up-to-date in terms of meeting present and future Air Traffic Management Performance requirements. The owner’s specific requirement was that his TBM be able to safely fly single pilot Baro-GNSS approaches and have ADS-B in and out. But the real prize was to have a modern digital autopilot designed from the outset to seamlessly integrate with Garmin’s 600 TXi. For this the owner was prepared to wait for the approval of Garmin’s GFC 600 autopilot and the 600 TXi’s turbine engine indication. This was recently approved by the FAA as an STC for the TBM 850, and thankfully, the STC was recognised by the South African CAA. The
