Health, Pension and Retirement: Protecting Our Present and Investing in Our Future
Join us for an instructive dialogue with diverse advocates and activists who will share their stories so that we can all learn how best to have our voices heard. Ensuring that the professionals in front of a camera and behind a microphone are inclusive of all of our cultures and communities has never been more vital than it is today. Connect with others who will share their insight, experiences and expertise, empowering each of us to support one another to have the impact to effect change.
SAG-AFTRA now has one merged health plan, but the details of providing health and retirement benefits to tens of thousands of members and their dependents is as complicated as ever. The CEOs of the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan, the SAG-Producers Pension Plan and the AFTRA Retirement Fund will brief you on what’s going on with the plans and address your questions.
The State of the Industries: How the Big Picture Affects You Industry economics expert and SAG-AFTRA Chief Economist David Viviano provides a unique view into the economics of the media and entertainment industry, identifying and explaining trends that are driving dramatic change in the business and sharing what those economic trends mean for the future.
The Octopus with a Thousand Legs – How We’ll Win with the Commercials Organizing Campaign SAG-AFTRA has been engaged in a vigorous fight to organize and recapture the commercials space. Hear from and talk with the team responsible for that campaign about what’s been accomplished and where it’s heading, with some contract 101 included in the process.
#sagaftraunidos – Our Union, Our Future: Why Spanish Language Media Matters to All of Us The hashtag #sagaftraunidos is the mantra of SAG-AFTRA’s campaign to organize and establish contract standards for work done in Spanish. Hear from the members who have been on the ground conducting these campaigns about their successes and the great challenges involved, and most importantly, why this matters to the union’s entire membership, regardless of language. All events are subject to change. Check the app or with an ambassador for details.

D
iversity is one of the union’s core values, and SAG-AFTRA’s American Scene Awards were created to highlight employers who are embracing
inclusivity and telling authentic and diverse stories. The Awards are the only recognition presented by the union that honors employers that value diversity in all its forms. For the third SAG-AFTRA American Scene Awards, honorees are Twentieth Century Fox Television for This Is Us, Atlantic Music Group for Hamilton (Original Broadway Cast Recording) and The Hamilton Mixtape, as well as the San Diego State University Research Foundation for KPBS San Diego. Winners were selected for work that exemplifies equal access and full inclusion of diverse ethnicities and backgrounds, people with disabilities, women, seniors, people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender, and other misrepresented or underrepresented groups.
This year’s call for nominations included major network, cable and streaming series, independent and studio feature films, public television and radio as well as local and national news and was the largest entry pool since the awards’ inception. Jenny O’Hara, chair of the SAG-AFTRA Honors and Tributes Committee, said, “The American Scene Awards are unique in the entertainment industry — they are the only award that recognizes producers and content creators for their diversity efforts. I’m proud to have worked alongside Jason George and the Diversity Advisory Committee to narrow down our winners. It was a difficult choice but This Is Us, KPBS San Diego and Hamilton are exceptional examples of the American Scene. Representation matters and we will continue to reward union signatories that prioritize the creation of content that reflects the world in which we live.” Jason George, chair of the SAG-AFTRA Diversity Advisory Committee, said, “All of these American Scene Award recipients are shining examples to the entertainment industry and the world that inclusivity is, in fact, the key to financial success and critical acclaim.” “We believe that there is more and better inclusive content being made now than ever before and, given the quality and number of projects we received for consideration, we are not alone. This year, the deliberations just to arrive at the finalists were incredibly difficult. This is a good problem to have and we are encouraged by the growing power of these intentionally inclusive employers and these aspirational awards to lead the way forward,” said SAG-AFTRA National Director of Equal Employment Opportunity & Diversity Adam Moore. These awards continue the celebrated tradition established more than 30 years ago by a 1985 AFTRA National Convention resolution. Taking into consideration authenticity, excellence and impact, and following the lead set by the SAG-AFTRA Constitution, the categories for which American Scene Awards are given mirror the three major categories by which we define ourselves as members: Entertainment, News and Broadcast, and Music and Sound Recordings. The awards will be presented on Friday, Oct. 6, as part of the A Legendary Evening celebration at the Globe Theatre at the Universal Studios Hollywood backlot.

Hamilton is the story of America’s founding father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the new nation’s Broadway, Hamilton is the story of America then, told by America now. The Hamilton recordings are being honored because people all over the world who have never seen a musical, let alone been to Broadway, can still hum through the entire original

Atlantic Music Group is being recognized because those who are fortunate enough to see the staged production show up singing along with the songs because they know the songs from The Mixtape by heart. As Rolling Stone summed it up in its 4.5-out-of5-star review, “The Hamilton Original Cast Recording proves that a cast soundtrack LP can work as a powerful, cohesive, exhilarating pop experience in the 21st century.”

PBS news serves the people of the San Diego region with trustworthy, in-depth
information that allows the community to hold its leaders accountable, showing how global and local current affairs change our lives, and how San Diego changes the world. More than just telling their listeners what is happening, they tell them why. KPBS was founded in 1960 as KEBS on the campus of San Diego State University. Presenting trusted news and programs that inspire, respect and educate its audience, KPBS delivers this content via multiple outlets, including television, radio and digital media, remaining relevant in a rapidly changing world. In 2015, KPBS employees negotiated their first SAG-AFTRA contract and, at the same time, started a first-of-its-kind joint diversity council. Comprised of members from all areas of the organization, from both labor and management, and open to all departments, the council’s mission is “to champion diversity and inclusion, and to advocate for equitable practices and more diverse perspectives throughout the organization.” Covering issues ranging from broader immigration policy and impact to the local and personal stories from the border communities, from disability rights to the GI Film

veryone has a family. And every family has a story. This Is Us chronicles the Pearson family across the decades, from Jack and Rebecca as young parents in the 1980s to their 37-year-old kids Kevin, Kate and Randall searching for love and fulfillment in the present day. This grounded, life-affirming dramedy reveals how the tiniest events in our lives impact who we become and how the connections we share with each other can transcend time, distance and even death. This Is Us has emerged as a breakout mainstream hit with myriad examples of inclusion. When so much of what’s happening in American culture speaks, at alarmingly loud volume, of divisiveness and marginalization, watching this American family, whose members reflect different colors, sizes, orientations and ethnicities, isn’t just a welcome relief. It’s never been more crucial.
Festival, KPBS is unrivaled in its commitment to engage with all citizens and to showcase the unique neighborhoods and people that make our communities thrive. SAG-AFTRA 2015 2017 NATIONAL CONVENTION 31

Union’s Most Devoted to Be Honored with Gold Cards

the live announcement. Last year’s recipients included the late Ken Howard, then president of SAG-AFTRA; former National Board member Dave Corey; SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director David White; and Associate National Executive Director Mathis Dunn. Howard was particularly surprised, since his award was presented at the end of the program, and there had been only two honorees during the convention’s first year. Howard acknowledged the contributions and commitment of his peers. “I’m in a distinguished group of people, many of whom have given years and years and years to union service,” he said. “Thank you for this extraordinary honor.” Corey accepted his award with humility. “I think of the footprints that have been laid by all those who have gone before and all those who are sitting out here, and in perspective to that footprint,
I have just a little tiny dot. I am so humbled by being put in the same light. Thank you,” he said. White graciously accepted the award but said the members deserved the credit. “There is no stopping this union. I genuinely believe that. And that is because of the people in this room.” The normally loquacious Dunn was left nearly speechless. “I never really thought I would have the honor of being recognized by a group of people who volunteer endless hours and dedicate their free time to so many and work so hard,” he said. The award is named for George Heller, an actor who was a co-founder of AFTRA’s predecessor AFRA, the American Federation of Radio Artists, in the summer of 1937. He eventually became its national executive secretary and would be the first head of AFTRA after the Television Authority merged with AFRA in 1952. After his premature death at age 49, AFTRA leaders created the award to honor his legacy.

he success of SAG-AFTRA is a collective effort. Every win our union achieves is the product of the hard work of members who volunteer their time and the staff, whose job it is to carry out members’ directives. All are deserving of kudos, but there are some individuals whose devotion to the union is exceptional. These people are often the driving force behind union initiatives and inspire others through their leadership and commitment. Every two years at convention, it has become a SAG-AFTRA tradition to honor these outstanding few with the George Heller Memorial Award. The award, which takes the form of a gold membership card, is presented at Friday night’s gala celebration, which this year is titled A Legendary Evening. It recognizes those who have made a significant contribution of service to SAG-AFTRA or its predecessor unions. The SAG-AFTRA Honors and Tributes Committee selects the honorees and their names are kept secret until
