New Member Orientation, Monday, Sept. 21, 5:30 p.m.

New members represent the future for SAG-AFTRA. The more knowledgeable they are, the stronger our union and all members are. The goal of the New Members Subcommittee of SAG-AFTRA Chicago's Community Outreach, Community Organizing committee is to educate, engage and empower professional performers from the moment they become union members.

The new member orientation event is only one part of that process. Topics covered include every step involved in the union experience, from initiation fees and the dues structure to the correct way to execute member reports and contracts. Other areas include agents and commissions, casting directors, resolving claims, health coverage, set demeanor, committees, staff and a variety of member benefits.

New member orientations are not just for new members. Whether you joined yesterday or 20 years ago, all members in good standing are welcome. Plan now to attend the next new membership orientation and stay informed.

SAG-AFTRA Conservatory Presents Budgets and Financial Planning When was the last time you reviewed your budget? Do you even have a budget? Who's going to manage your savings and retirement accounts? Sandra Karas, a SAG-AFTRA New York Local Board member, secretary-treasurer of AEA and director of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will present a primer for those in the performing arts industry. Come to a free seminar and take the fear out of money matters.

SAG-AFTRA Mourns the Passing of Dick Moore SAG-AFTRA mourns the passing of former child star and AFTRA public relations consultant Dick Moore, who was married to screen star Jane Powell. He contributed to AFTRA's public relations and communications teams for more than three decades. Moore died on Sept. 7, less than a week from celebrating his 90th birthday.

Moore was an indispensable asset to AFTRA for many years. His writing and no-nonsense approach to communications and public relations helped to speak on behalf of and better inform our members.

John Richard "Dick" Moore was born on Sept. 12, 1925 in Los Angeles. His mother's chance meeting of a casting director led to his film debut a year later in The Beloved Rogue, portraying stage and film star John Barrymore as an infant. Moore joined Screen Actors Guild in 1937 and AFTRA in 1950. Known onscreen as "Dickie" Moore, he would appear in more than 100 films and television episodes before leaving acting in 1957.

SAG-AFTRA Senior Radio Players Perform on Oct. 19 On Monday, Oct. 19, the SAG-AFTRA Senior Radio Players will present an old-time radio show complete with commercials, recreating episodes from two classic programs: Boston Blackie and Baby Snooks.

7 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.) Monday, Oct. 19 Claudia Cassidy Theater at the Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph (at Michigan) Admission is free. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

A Call to Arts Join Us in Mentoring the Next Generation of Storytellers Every great artist is inevitably asked, "What are your influences? Who inspired you?" For the next generation of storytellers, the answer may be you.

SAG-AFTRA and the American Film Institute have partnered with President Barack Obama and the White House to reach out to young people pursuing careers in the arts. In collaboration with industry colleagues and partner organizations, this national effort aims to generate more than a million hours of mentoring over the next three years.

Your experience and insight are invaluable to the creative voices who will be the architects of tomorrow's culture. Maybe you're already volunteering to teach a class, hosting an intern or reading to children in school. All of this counts!

SAG-AFTRA to Host Chicago Creatives Cocktail Party SAG-AFTRA is the host of the next Chicago Creatives Cocktail Party on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

This is a monthly cocktail party dedicated to bringing members of the film, advertising and production communities together to network. Each event has reached capacity of about 200 attendees.

It's a great opportunity to network with future employers and catch up with fellow SAG-AFTRA members.

11th Annual Blood Drive with Free Headshots and Flu Shots On Monday, Nov. 2, the Kaufherr Members Resource Center will host the 11th annual SAG-AFTRA Chicago Blood Drive. The drive is open to SAG-AFTRA and AEA members, family and friends, agents and other industry pros, our labor brothers and sisters, and our neighbors in the building. It's a fun day with lots of surprises, treats and more.

Everyone who donates blood will receive a certificate for a free headshot from a local photographer - see details in the next Activator - at a future date.

Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood. Those of us blessed with good health can share it through donating blood -- to enable a premature baby to live, a burn victim to recover, a cancer patient to be treated, an accident victim to survive or a transplant candidate to have a lifesaving surgery.

If you have avoided donating blood because you don't like needles, try this: With your thumb and forefinger, pinch the skin on the inside of your elbow joint. Regular blood donors say that's a pretty good simulation of what it feels like when you give blood. Won't you just give it a try -- and then if you think somebody's life is worth putting up with a little pinch, we'd love to sign you up for the SAG-AFTRA Blood Drive.

The need is constant and your contribution is important for a healthy and reliable blood supply. And you'll feel good knowing you've helped change a life.

You must be 17 years old or older and weigh at least 110 pounds to donate blood. There is no upper age limit and most medications do not disqualify you from donating. Other restrictions may apply.
