Dear Delegate,
I
’m honored and delighted to welcome you to our second national convention. Educate. Engage. Empower. That’s the theme of this convention, and all three of these
actions share a common thread: No individual can do any of them alone. Whether you work primarily as a broadcaster, as an actor/performer or as a recording artist, ours is a collaborative industry; we do our best work when we work together.
KEN HOWARD President
And that’s especially true for our union. From the founding of our two predecessor unions to our historic merger, and then through today, everything we have accomplished has been the result of a collective effort. In the face of tremendous challenges in our industry, from megamergers to rapid technological changes, the need for active participation has never been greater. Two years ago, delegates from across the nation gathered here in Los Angeles to celebrate the successful merger of two great unions and to chart a course for SAG-AFTRA’s future. Since then, we have achieved numerous contract gains, expanded our organizing efforts and much, much more. But there is a lot yet to accomplish, and we need your creativity, experience and enthusiasm to drive us forward. If our first convention was about coming together, this one is about moving ahead. Working together, we help chart the union’s course for the next two years. As we elect our national vice presidents and consider constitutional amendments and the adoption of resolutions, share what you are doing in your local — and learn what other leaders are doing successfully in theirs. The convention environment encourages deep collaboration with other delegates and “outside-the-box” thinking, often resulting in better engagement programs and a more empowered membership. I hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to hear different perspectives as you share your own experiences. So get out there and talk with your fellow elected leaders. Share your concerns. Learn about the challenges facing members in every category. Discuss potential solutions. Educate. Engage. Empower. It’s all up to you. In unity,

Dear Member,
O
ur national convention is a central component of the union’s governance and community. With the consideration of resolutions and constitutional amendments,
it sets the tone for many of the governance issues that we will face over the next two years. With several panels and workshops featured over the three-day event, we exchange ideas and learn more about the developments occurring in the industries in which our

members work. Our ceremonial events allow elected delegates to celebrate the virtues that matter most to our membership: During the Gala Under the Stars, we will present the American Scene Awards (see page 30), honoring those who are pushing the industry toward greater diversity and inclusion and helping to open up work opportunities for all our members. We will also present the George Heller Memorial Award (see page 32) that honors members and staff who have demonstrated an exceptional level of devotion toward the union. Above all, our convention furnishes the opportunity for SAG-AFTRA members to network with other members from across the country and across categories. Where else can singers from Nashville meet and engage with stunt performers from Los Angeles? Where else can broadcasters from San Francisco share a cup of coffee and conversation with actors who live and work in Miami? The strength of a union flows from the ties between its members, and our convention provides the forum for these relationships to flourish. Share ideas, build lasting new friendships and strengthen old ones and, above all, have an enjoyable, productive and memorable convention. That is our wish for all delegates at the second biennial SAG-AFTRA National Convention, and I look forward to seeing you all. In unity and looking forward,
David White

The Art and Science of Organizing
International organizations, performers unions, collecting societies and other organizations work together to ensure that performers are protected and compensated wherever they work and wherever their work is used. Join this conversation about what we do now — and what we can do in the future — to make performers’ lives better and their compensation and treatment more fair.
What should be the highest priorities for future SAG-AFTRA organizing? What are the challenges and opportunities? What can we learn from recent and ongoing organizing campaigns, including the Commercials Organizing and Recapture Initiative? This workshop examines the ways in which successful organizing combines systematic analysis of our industries, employers and labor markets with innovative strategies that make use of the creative power of SAG-AFTRA members.
A Celebration Of Diversity: The American Scene in Action
What You Should Know About SAG-AFTRA Contracts
As memorialized in our founding mission statement, “SAG-AFTRA’s strength is in our diversity.” Join a candid conversation about today’s media landscape, what is driving the varied yet seemingly increased representation of diverse stories and faces on our screens and, most importantly, what SAG-AFTRA members, creators and audiences can do to ensure lasting and positive change. The discussion will focus on what members can do individually and collectively to make the greatest impact in one of the most dynamic periods in the history of entertainment. All events are subject to change. Check the app or with an ambassador for details.
Collect Them All! While you’re at the convention, keep your eye out for these commemorative buttons. Collect six different buttons by Sunday and bring them to the check-in table for a special gift. Offer good while supplies last.
SAG-AFTRA staff discusses the terms of various contracts, including news and broadcast contracts and residuals under SAG-AFTRA entertainment contracts, as well as an overview of the SAG-AFTRA commercials contracts and how members can engage with the union on contract issues.
The Evolution of the Media Landscape, Its Economics and Our Work This seminar explores labor economics and the media business to offer delegates a foundation of knowledge on the complex issues that face the union and impact their work.

E
ach national convention, SAG-AFTRA takes the opportunity to present the American Scene Awards, which
recognize employers working to present a diverse perspective in media. The recipients are chosen for realistically portraying our nation’s diversity by intelligently and progressively employing the talents of various backgrounds and ethnicities, people with disabilities, women, seniors, people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and/ or transgender, and other misrepresented or underrepresented groups.
This year’s call for nominations generated the most to date and represented a wide variety of media. Recognizing their contributions to creating a rich, diverse and vibrant media landscape, this year’s honorees are Capitol Records Nashville for Darius Rucker’s album Southern Style, Amazon Studios for Transparent and NPR’s Code Switch team. Taking into consideration authenticity, excellence and impact, the awards recognize work in the three main contract categories covered by the union. The honors include the Actor/Performer Award, the Belva Davis Broadcaster Award and the Recording Artist Award. They will be presented the evening of Friday, Oct. 2, at the Gala Under the Stars event on the Warner Bros. Studios backlot. Jenny O’Hara, chair of the SAG-AFTRA Honors and Tributes Committee, said of the Recording Artist Award recipient, “The impact that Darius [Rucker] has had with this album, with both country music and mainstream audiences, has been tremendous. We wanted to call attention to Capitol Nashville’s support of category-defying artists like him who insist on authentically giving voice to the American Scene.” Jason George, chair of the SAG-AFTRA Diversity Advisory Committee, said of the Actor/Performer Award recipient, “[Creator] Jill [Soloway] and Amazon Studios understood from the beginning that this show had the potential to expand our understanding of difference through storytelling and that visibility is the key to decreasing stigma of marginalized communities. We are thrilled to recognize her and the entire Transparent family with this honor.” SAG-AFTRA Vice President, Broadcasters Catherine Brown said of the Belva Davis Broadcaster Award recipient, “It’s as if NPR and the Code Switch team deliberately set out to create programming with the American Scene Awards in mind! And it’s not just the stories that are diverse: It’s the incredible insights that their diverse perspectives and experiences bring to the subject matter that stands out and why they are so deserving of this award.”

he presence of transgender people in our cultural zeitgeist is moving rapidly, and Transparent is at the forefront of moving the conversation
forward. Transparent is the only scripted show that situates transgender characters in stories that are larger than their identities, humanizing their life experiences by thinking beyond introductory-level conversations. Transparent speaks across many levels of legibility, presenting themes that are relevant to all viewers. Transparent is the most trans-inclusive production in Hollywood history — both in front of and behind the camera. The production employs a dozen trans people full time on its production staff. “We’re thrilled to be recognized for this tremendous honor,” said Roy Price, Vice President, Amazon Studios. “The storytelling in Transparent celebrates social influence by a group that has gained visibility remarkably in the last year and we’re excited to be a part of it.”

And there’s a mentality that there’s room for everybody. “So with these songs, I wanted to bring out the way I live, the way my friends live, and all the things that are important to us,” he says. “That is my south, my favorite city in the world,” he says. “It’s such a big part of who I am. Going for the Gold
T
he gala celebration at the inaugural SAG-AFTRA convention, on the evening of Sept. 27, 2013, saw the presentation of the very first SAG-AFTRA George Heller Memorial Award — continuing a tradition that the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists maintained from 1957 until its final convention in 2011. The George Heller Memorial Award — a gold membership card — is bestowed on those who have made a significant contribution through years of service to SAG-AFTRA (including service to the former Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) and our members. The honor is given to recipients under the guidelines approved by the National Honors and Tributes Committee and adopted by the National Board. The 2013 Heller Award presentation was deeply emotional. The two recipients, National Vice President, Small Locals, David Hartley-Margolin, of the Colorado Local and Washington-Mid Atlantic Local Executive Director Pat O’Donnell were stunned to near-speechlessness as each was called to the podium to receive their award. Symbolically and appropriately, the recipients were introduced by the members who had received the final AFTRA Heller Memorial Awards in 2011 at the union’s Seattle convention:

Denny Delk and John Connolly. Clearly surprised, Hartley-Margolin accepted the first award with emotion: “I am humbled and just blown away.” Then it was O’Donnell’s turn. The award had additional meaning for her because her beloved late husband, AFTRA’s Washington-Baltimore Local General Counsel Thomas P. Powers, who had died just five years earlier, had received the Heller Award in 2005. Eyes moist, she declared, “I am speechless and I am going to try not to cry.” George Heller, a co-founder of AFRA — the American Federation of Radio Artists — in the summer of 1937 when he was 31 years old, was its driving force until he died and instrumental in its transformation to AFTRA — the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. He had risen to the post of the union’s national executive secretary and the shock of his premature death at age 49, from stomach cancer, galvanized AFTRA to create an award to honor him and ensure that his name and legacy would be known to future generations. After his death, it was written that “No one can deny that George Heller accomplished more for AFTRA nationally than any other single individual. He gave incessantly of his time, effort, loyalty — his life itself — for the constant betterment of this union, and the benefits obtainable for all its members.”

Here’s one more thing Union families can share.
As our kids grow up, we want to make sure to pass down our union values. Congratulations to SAG-AFTRA for your continuing dedication to solidarity and hosting your second convention! Members can save with AT&T Wireless and Union Plus. Just because you’re union, you can save 15% on select wireless service from AT&T, the only national wireless provider that’s union - like you. You can save whether you’re already an AT&T customer, or switching to all-union AT&T. Plus, if you use a Union Plus Credit Card on qualifying purchases, you’re eligible for up to $250 in rebates. For union members, this is an easy call.
Save the union way at UnionPlus.org/ATT All program plans for new and existing customers may require a new two-year contract. This offer cannot be combined with any other discounts. Qualifying monthly data plan required.
