Dear Member,
A
s SAG-AFTRA members, we are part of a pretty exclusive group. Whether you make your living as an actor, broadcaster, recording
artist, dancer, stuntperson or in any of the other areas we cover, we have two things in common: Our work puts us out there, in front of the world,
KEN HOWARD National President
and we’re the best at what we do. SAG-AFTRA stands out as a mark of quality. It’s something I hear again and again, often from producers hiring union talent for the first time: The skills and professionalism of the SAG-AFTRA member are a cut above. They’re knowledgeable, easy to work with, and their talent and training shows through in a better final product. Each of us is passionate about our work, but without the union, many of us couldn’t make a living doing what we love. The union has also created a framework for solidarity among our members — it’s the kind of thing you don’t see among our nonunion counterparts. It manifests itself not only in the day-to-day acts of kindness between members, but in the foundations and other organizations that have grown up around our union to offer a helping hand to members who need it. We are stronger when we stand together. I look forward to working side by side with you at this historic first convention and as we embark upon the journey of building our new union. It is my honor to serve as your national president and to say, “I am a SAG-AFTRA member.” In unity,
Ken Howard

Dear Member,
I
’m honored and excited to welcome you to SAG-AFTRA’s very first convention.
We are extremely fortunate to have a strong union setting our pay
and protecting us when we work. Across the country, the percentage
AMY AQUINO Secretary-Treasurer
of workers represented by unions is at one of its lowest points ever. Since collective bargaining is really the only tool there is for ensuring that workers are paid fairly, it’s no coincidence that the middle class is suffering, and our country’s wealth is so unevenly distributed. That’s why the labor movement has been looking to SAG-AFTRA and our positive momentum as an inspiration. It’s also why we as members need to do our utmost to ensure that SAG-AFTRA stays healthy, vital and united. Our ability to have long-lasting, meaningful careers is shaped by many things, but nothing is more important to our goals as professionals than a strong and vibrant union. We’re going to do a lot of business at our first convention — we’ll be electing key leaders, debating and voting on important constitutional amendments and resolutions from across the country, and educating ourselves about our changing business. We’ll be helping shape and define our brand-new union. We will also take a moment to celebrate what we built together. By founding SAG-AFTRA, we not only made history, we made a statement heard around the world — that unity matters, and collective action is just as important as it always was. We have a lot of work to do. Let’s get started. Your partner in unity,
Amy Aquino

that confront our members are enormous, and they exist across the wide landscape of our major contract areas. As we move forward, we must meet these obstacles with the power of a unified vision and effort. This first convention presents a distinct moment for us to cultivate such a unified spirit and provides opportunities to work with your fellow members to do just that. I hope to have the chance to engage with as many of you as possible during your time here. And I look forward to working with the new officers elected during this convention who, along with President Ken Howard and Secretary-Treasurer Amy Aquino, will complete the elected leadership team for the next two years. Together, we can accomplish great things for our membership. I truly believe that SAG-AFTRA’s best years lie ahead of us, as we stand on the achievements of our legacy unions to step forward into a bright horizon. Now is the time for us to get started. Best wishes for a great convention! In unity and looking forward,
David White

keynote speakers AFL-CIO PRESIDENT RICHARD TRUMKA was first elected in 2009 and was recently re-elected at the AFL-CIO’s convention in Los Angeles. Trumka has dedicated more than 15 years of service to the AFL-CIO, following his beginnings in the small coal-mining communities of southwest Pennsylvania. His vision as a leader stems from wise words his grandfather, a miner, told him when he was young: “If you want to help workers, you first need to help people.” Prior to his presidency, Trumka served unions as legal counsel, president of the United Mine Workers of America and secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO.
U.S. REP. JUDY CHU was elected in July 2009 to represent California’s 27th District. In the 113th Congress, Chu serves on the House Judiciary Committee, where she is a member of the Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations Subcommittee and the Intellectual Property and the Internet Subcommittee. In 2011, she was elected as the chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. Chu began her career as an educator and taught psychology at Los Angeles City College and East Los Angeles College for 20 years. She also served in the California State Assembly.
SECRETARY OF LABOR THOMAS E. PEREZ was sworn into office on July 23, 2013. Previously, he served as assistant attorney general for civil rights at the U.S. Department of Justice, enforcing federal laws that prohibit discrimination and uphold the civil and constitutional rights of all who live in America. Among the division’s achievements under his leadership was the successful implementation of the Shepard-Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act; expanding equal housing opportunities; protecting schoolchildren from discrimination, bullying and harassment; and dramatically widening access to employment, educational opportunities and housing for people with disabilities. He previously served as the secretary of Maryland’s Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

keynote panel Conversation from the Leading Edge KEYVAN PEYMANI (MODERATOR) is the managing director of the Digital Strategy Division of ICM Partners. ICM Partners is one of the preeminent talent and literary agencies in the world, representing clients in the fields of motion pictures, television, publishing, music, theater, branded entertainment and digital media, with principal offices in Los Angeles, New York and London.
TERRY CITY, BuzzFeed’s West Coast vice president, oversees sales and strategy for the leading media company for social news and entertainment. He works with top brands, helping them navigate the world of social publishing and native advertising. In addition to sales, City oversees BuzzFeed’s increased presence in the Los Angeles and the Bay Area markets.
THANIA GUARDINO, Somo Mobile’s marketing and account executive, is a self-proclaimed “millennial” who enjoys everything digital, has a strong love of cheese and is probably the last loyal Blackberry 9900 fan. She likes the Starbucks app, which allows her to easily use her gold rewards card.
GREG SIEGEL, BreakMedia’s senior vice president of entertainment development, leads the company’s entertainment partnerships and film and television initiatives. Previously, Siegel was a talent agent for 12 years at the Endeavor Agency (now William Morris Endeavor Entertainment). Prior to representing actors, Siegel founded Endeavor’s New Media division in 1996, developing the agency’s early Internet strategy.
D.A. WALLACH, Spotify’s artist-in-residence, is best known as one half of the music duo Chester French. A graduate of Harvard College and a SAG-AFTRA member, Wallach has been featured in numerous publications, including GQ and Rolling Stone, and has toured with many artists, including Lady Gaga and Weezer, and collaborated with Janelle Monáe and Macklemore.

panels Media Industry Outlook An overview of recent business trends in the media industry and an outlook for the near future of TV (broadcast, basic cable and premium), radio, advertising, sound recordings, scripted dramatic television programs, theatrical feature films, home video, new media and other ancillary markets.
Speak Up Audiobooks Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow A panel of prominent SAG-AFTRA narrators from across the country will present an overview of the audiobook industry and their work as audiobook narrators — providing details on the dramatic growth of this area of work, the craft of narration, and SAG-AFTRA’s role in organizing the audiobook narrator community and, by extension, the industry.
Introduction to the New Media Agreement SAG-AFTRA members can take control of their careers through work in new media. This panel will discuss the SAG-AFTRA New Media Agreement, how to become signatory and what it means to be signed. Helpful tips and advice on unionizing a non-union new media project will be offered.
Broadcast Personal Services Contracts Primer A presentation and discussion of employment agreements used in the broadcast industry. The basic provisions of PSCs and their impact on member employment will be addressed. Members will receive information on basic techniques to use in individual negotiations, updates on current employer tactics and strategies, and advice on how to best approach negotiations with employers.
Casting & Auditions Your Rights and Obligations The world of casting and auditions can be a dangerous one for performers. Find out how the SAG-AFTRA collective bargaining agreements and the law can be important lifelines. Participants will hear from enforcement experts on how these provisions apply in common, real-world scenarios. Included in this panel will be a discussion of casting websites and call-in services, and some of the issues these commonly raise for performers. 18
special Presentation Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity Diversity in the Industry SAG-AFTRA, in cooperation with the SAG-Producers Industry Advancement Cooperative Fund, and the UCLA Law School’s Williams Institute present the results of the first-ever study of sexual orientation and gender identity diversity in the entertainment industry. The discussion will examine what it says about the industry — where we are and how far we have to go to achieve inclusiveness and equal employment opportunity.
Stuntpersons, Singers and Dancers Common and Unique Problems Dancers, singers and stunt performers have unique work lives and need unique resources and support to enhance their careers. This panel will focus on the special resources available and how members can access them, and will include information on services provided by the union, the various contracts and provisions under which members can work, and the importance of networking.
workshops Organizing Ever Feel Like You’re Doing It All Wrong? Sharing Lessons From Successful Campaign and Recruitment Strategies Talking union but still fumbling your recruiting? Why everything you’re saying and doing to organize current and new members is all wrong. This workshop will get to the root of why people truly consider joining the union or joining a union-led initiative, and will examine how to deal effectively with apathy and other organizing challenges. It will discuss honest and sincere approaches to frame conversations that will have a much better affect on the people being recruited to the cause. This workshop will be an interactive session full of practical guidance and skills development.
Create Your Own Script-to-Screen Program Find out how to develop a script-to-screen program in your local. The Houston-Austin Local’s Jim Huston Memorial Scriptto-Screen Program is highly successful, providing members the opportunity to reach out to local industry, forge new partnerships and create a network of writers, directors, producers and SAG-AFTRA performers who blaze a trail to greenlight unproduced screenplays.

Includes discussion of member leadership and participation in the administration and enforcement of a CBA during its term and in preparation for negotiations, development of proposals, member communication and participation at the bargaining table and throughout the process.
Public Policy Making Government Work for SAG-AFTRA Members Subject matter experts discuss how public policy issues affect SAG-AFTRA members and their work lives, and how the union works to advance their cause in ways both highly visible and behind the scenes. Public policy issues to be addressed include “rightto-work” (for less) laws, tax incentives, right of publicity, young performer issues and more.

Find out how this affects principal performers, background performers and the strength of your union when negotiating — and what can be done to advance the cause.
Contracts 101: Overview of the Actor/Performer Collective Bargaining Agreements This panel will give an overview of the areas of SAG-AFTRA’s jurisdiction as they relate to actor/performers, including an outline of which collective bargaining agreements cover which types of work, and a review of the basics of those agreements.

The strongest bond of human sympathy outside the family relation should be one uniting working people of all nations and tongues and kindreds. ~ Abraham Lincoln We join the members and officers of SAG-AFTRA in celebrating your inaugural national convention and share your determination that we all must be “united for our future.” Standing together is the only way we can win economic and social justice for all. It’s the only way we will build a 21st century economy that benefits all. We’re proud to partner with SAG-AFTRA as we all strive to create a fairer nation.
