January 21, 2018 Ladies and Gentlemen of SAG-AFTRA, Welcome to the 24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards®, celebrating the outstanding performances of 2017. This has been a remarkable year in many ways, and we appreciate this opportunity to contemplate it in the company of our SAG-AFTRA family. Tonight we honor selected colleagues in 13 categories, the actors you and your fellow union members identified as outstanding practitioners of our art and craft. An incredible 121,544 members were eligible to vote, and your opinions have been heard, tallied, and sealed into envelopes to be opened tonight during a ceremony hosted by Kristen Bell. It is your evening, and it is exceptional that millions of viewers — many thousands of whom are fellow SAG-AFTRA members — are watching live on TNT and TBS across all platforms as well as internationally. This year we also honor the bravery of the women and men who have stepped forward to demand their rightful personal safety and professional dignity. Through the courage of those who are willing to share their personal experience, we are now presented with an opportunity to initiate systemic change that can improve the lives of many. Everyone has a fundamental right to be treated with respect at work and when applying for work. SAG-AFTRA has always strived for that goal, just as it strives for inclusivity in all endeavors, as fundamental requirements for reaching creative and economic equality. We are the diverse storytellers who give a face and a voice to our collective stories, and we believe the stories we share should reflect the reality of the world around us. Tonight’s recipient of the 54th Annual Life Achievement Award, Morgan Freeman, has an illustrious body of work that demonstrates how valuable this credo is. The Academy Award® winning actor, producer, voice actor and activist elucidates the humanity of every role he portrays, wielding his formidable talent to burst through the artificial barriers set by others’ expectations. The union’s top accolade also factors in Freeman’s philanthropic support of promising African-American playwrights, initiatives to educate females, and other causes that create hope and better lives. Also bolstering our community are our partners PEOPLE and the Entertainment Industry Foundation who host the Post-Awards Gala for the 22nd consecutive year tonight, joined by TNT & TBS for the first time. In so doing, these entities support the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. The Foundation encourages literacy and supports SAG-AFTRA professionals as they launch new careers, advance existing ones, and confront economic and health-related hardships. We are additionally grateful to the Directors Guild of America, the Writers Guild of America, and the American Federation of Musicians, whose generosity enables the presentation of every film and television clip you see tonight. IATSE and the Teamsters have for years supported the SAG Awards while representing their respective memberships. We thank each and every union member – the finest directors, writers, musicians and crews anywhere – whose work is on display as we view the nominated performances and filmed tributes. We are inspired by what tonight’s nominees have accomplished, and as fellow SAG-AFTRA members we couldn’t be more proud. This is an awe-inspiring evening and we’re glad we can share it with you.

Life Achievement Award
Morgan Freeman
organ Freeman – Academy Award® winning actor, producer, voice actor and activist – has been named the 54th recipient of SAG-AFTRA’s highest tribute: the SAG Life Achievement Award for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment. It will join Freeman’s exceptional catalog of preeminent industry and public honors, which includes a Screen Actors Guild Award®, an Academy Award, HFPA’s Cecil B. DeMille Award®, an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, seven Image Awards, a Silver Berlin Bear, several Obies®, a Kennedy Center Honor, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A Life Devoted to His Art and Craft
Freeman first earned recognition for his acting skills at age 12, when he won a statewide drama competition in Mississippi. As a young actor he paid his dues in small roles, pausing only to serve in the U.S. Air Force. As he breathed life into memorable characters, widespread critical acclaim came accompanied by enraptured audiences and commercial success. Freeman invariably ranks as one of the five worldwide top-grossing actors of all time, with his films having earned over $4.5 billion in cumulative ticket sales.
An Indelible Presence in Film
Freeman has earned four Screen Actors Guild Award nominations. He received the SAG Awards Actor® for his performance in the Best Picture Oscar® winning Million Dollar Baby, a role that also garnered him a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award and an Image Award. Two films starring Freeman are held in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry: Unforgiven, which received four Oscars, and The Shawshank Redemption, for which Freeman received Best Actor nominations for a SAG Award, Oscar and a Golden Globe. Among Freeman’s extensive list of credits – now nearing 100 films – another milestone is Invictus. His portrayal of Nelson Mandela received the National Board of Review Award for Best Actor and an Image Award along with nominations for another SAG Award, Oscar and Golden Globe. The picture was produced by Revelations Entertainment, the company Freeman and Lori McCreary co-founded in 1996 with a mission “to produce films that reveal truth” and to stay in the forefront of digital entertainment. Other credits in that still-growing list include Street Smart (Freeman’s 1987 breakthrough role), The Dark Knight, The Bucket List, Glory, Lean on Me, Se7en, Amistad, Bruce Almighty, and Along Came a Spider.
Integrity and Inspiration in Television
Freeman first became nationally known and loved in 1971 when he starred in the seminal Children’s Television Workshop (CTW) show The Electric Company. Known as the most
popular instructional show on television over its six-year run, the series won an Emmy® for Outstanding Children’s Series and a Grammy® for its soundtrack album. Most recently, Freeman is an executive producer with McCreary on the Revelations Entertainment series Madam Secretary for CBS, and The Story of Us with Morgan Freeman for the National Geographic Channel.
A Respected, Trusted Voice
Freeman’s is one of the world’s most recognizable and beloved voices. He most recently narrated The C Word, the latest in a string of prestigious documentaries that includes the IMAX film Island of Lemurs: Madagascar, Science Channel’s Stem Cell Universe with Stephen Hawking, and the informative IMAX feature We the People. Three previous narrations are the Peabody Award winning ESPN 30 For 30 documentary The 16th Man and two Academy Award-winning documentaries, The Long Way Home and The March of the Penguins.
Authenticity and Insight on Stage
After earlier roles in the off-Broadway stage productions of The Niggerlovers and the transformational all African-American production of Hello Dolly, Freeman’s 1978 role as Zeke in The Mighty Gents earned him a Drama Desk Award and a Tony Award® nomination. His arresting, moving performances went on to earn three Obie Awards even before he portrayed Hoke Colburn in Alfred Uhry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Driving Miss Daisy, a role for which Freeman received an Oscar nomination when he reprised it for the Best Picture Oscar winning film of the same name.
Helping to Shape the Future
In 1973 Freeman co-founded the Frank Silvera Writers’ Workshop, which supports promising African-American playwrights to ensure those voices can be heard. He additionally supports Artists for a New South Africa and the Campaign for Female Education, and he co-owns the Ground Zero Blues Club® in Clarksdale, Mississippi.
NEPC would like to congratulate the nominees of the 24th Annual SAG Awards® Special congratulations to Morgan Freeman for your Life Achievement Award!

ACTOR Timothée Chalamet has come a long way in a short period of time, and now he counts industry heavyweights like Matthew McConaughey as mentors.
HOLLYWOOD’S NEXT BIG STAR With ‘Call Me by Your Name’ and ‘Lady Bird,’ Timothée Chalamet is rising fast BY AMY KAUFMAN >>> Long before Timothée Chalamet turned 18, he was itching to be considered an adult. By age 10, he was riding the subway alone, a city kid growing up in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan. At 16, he landed a major role on Showtime’s “Homeland,” playing the vice president’s overly entitled son. A year later, he was admitted to Columbia University at 17 years old. ¶ That Cole Los Angeles Times was also how old Chalamet was when Carolyn he was cast in his first big studio movie, “Interstellar.” The film was slated to shoot in Canada, and the teenager had no interest in bringing his parents along as his legal guardians. So he looked online and found a loophole in the California state law that said “for films made by production companies based out of the West Coast, if you have a high school degree and are over 16 then you can travel alone,” Chalamet explained. ¶ “I just told my parents I was going alone,” the actor recalled. “I’ve always felt like there was less creative space on sets with guardians. I just felt independent at a young age.” ¶ Now 21, Chalamet continues to outshine his peers. This fall, he appears in three critically acclaimed awards contenders: [See Chalamet, E5]
A millennial spin on ‘She’s Gotta Have It’
Diversity in Hollywood on a Macro scale
By Meredith Blake
By Tre’vell Anderson
Years ago, a guy DeWanda Wise was dating gave her a DVD of “She’s Gotta Have It,” the debut feature by Spike Lee. The film’s heroine, Nola Darling, a confident young Brooklyn artist who boldly eschews monogamy, the boyfriend said, reminded him of her. “I saw it in my early 20s, at that pivotal point of development where you’re really figuring out your identity, and what you stand for, and how to stick up for yourself,” recalls Wise, describing the character originated by Tracy Camilla Johns as “one of our very few black female cinematic icons.” That relationship didn’t last, but the vision of Wise as Nola Darling was prophetic: The actress will play the role in a 10-episode series adaptation of “She’s Gotta Have It,” directed by Lee and premiering on Netflix on Thanksgiving Day. Following supporting roles in Fox’s “Shots Fired” and WGN’s “Underground,” the part represents a major breakthrough for Wise, who puts a distinctly millennial spin [See Wise, E8]
Charles D. King has a particular swag about him: corporate yet street; minimalist yet audacious. It’s no wonder that one day he’s at an industry panel in Beverly Hills talking about the need for diversity and inclusion in Hollywood, and two days later he’s on a decidedly different stage at ComplexCon in Long Beach in conversation with Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler. And in both spaces he’s completely at home, pulling attention ever so slightly away from his counterparts. What else is one to expect? King, a former super agent, is the man behind Macro, the media brand that in three short years has made a name for itself by financing and producing the Oscar-nominated “Fences” and two of this year’s awards contenders, “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” and “Mudbound.” Both are playing in limited release, with “Roman” expanding nationwide on Wednesday and “Mudbound” simultaneously streaming on Netflix. “I felt like my mission [See Macro, E6]

“WHAT SHE HAS TO HAVE has changed,” says DeWanda Wise, who plays the
lead character in the new Netflix series. “I always say, ‘She’s got to have it all.’ ”
