January 19, 2020 Ladies and Gentlemen of SAG-AFTRA, Welcome to the 26th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards®, celebrating the outstanding performances of 2019. For more than a quarter-century now, your show has supported the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s work improving the lives and careers of all our members. We are grateful to the Directors Guild of America, the Writers Guild of America, and the American Federation of Musicians, whose generosity enables the presentation of every film and television clip you see tonight. IATSE and the Teamsters have always supported the SAG Awards® as well. An incredible 121,923 members were eligible to vote this year, and your opinions have been heard, tallied, and sealed into envelopes to be opened during tonight’s ceremony. Millions of viewers are watching live on TNT and TBS across both traditional and emerging platforms. The telecast is viewed internationally as well, including at U.S. military installations through the American Forces Network. Tonight’s highlight will be the presentation of the 56th Annual Life Achievement Award to Robert De Niro. Audiences were instantly transfixed by the young actor playing wildly different roles in films released only two months apart in 1973. As a slow-witted, terminally ill baseball catcher in Bang the Drum Slowly, he was endearing and pitiable; as a street thug in Mean Streets he was deceptive and manipulative. This was Robert De Niro, and he was just getting warmed up. One year later he would win an Academy Award® for his performance as young Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II, for which he spoke in a number of Sicilian dialects – and only a few words in English. Audiences never knew what to expect: would he gain 60 pounds, as he did for Raging Bull, or lose 32, as he did for The Last Tycoon? The preeminent chameleon of his profession, he has inspired generations of actors who have followed. Since its inception, the SAG Awards have benefitted the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, and this year’s list of Foundation supporters is led by Stand Up To Cancer and our partners at PEOPLE, who host the Post-Awards Gala for the 24th consecutive year tonight. The Foundation supports SAG-AFTRA professionals as they launch new careers, advance existing ones, and confront economic and health-related hardships. We are inspired by what tonight’s nominees and fellow SAG-AFTRA members have accomplished. We are strong, we are kindred, and we are glad to share tonight with you. SAG-AFTRA Board of Directors
WE SQUIRMED
when you asked if we were talkin’ to you.
WE CHEERED
when you agreed to that cup of coffee.
WE LAUGHED when you invoked the Circle of Trust.
And tonight...
WE’LL STAND AND APPLAUD as you accept the SAG Life Achievement Award.
CONGRATULATIONS on always getting the right reaction.

ROBERT DeNIRO Award winning actor, producer and director, Robert De Niro, has been named the 56th recipient of SAG-AFTRA's highest tribute: the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment. HONORS IN SEVERAL DISCIPLINES
The Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award is given annually to an actor who fosters the "finest ideals of the acting profession." De Niro will add the award to his extraordinary catalog of preeminent industry and public honors, which includes two Academy Awards®, a Screen Actors Guild Award®, a Golden Globe Award®, the Cecil B. DeMille Award®, a Silver Berlin Bear, a Kennedy Center Honor, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, a GLADD Excellence in Media Award, the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Chaplin Award and the Rockefeller Foundation’s Jane Jacobs Medal for Lifetime Leadership. He was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Brown University. A MASTER AT WORK
As a SAG-AFTRA member for more than 50 years, De Niro has created hundreds of characters, and depicted each with extraordinary depth and skill. Whether he is embodying the smoldering inferno of young Vito Corleone or portraying the hysterical and infamous father-in-law, Jack Byrnes, De Niro’s ability to captivate the audience's imagination is truly unmatched. He continues to enthrall audiences with his gripping and intense performances, opening their minds to exciting worlds of emotion with each project he takes on. A L ASTING IMPACT THROUGH FILM
De Niro’s breakthrough role was in the 1973 film Mean Streets, where he began the first of nine collaborations with director Martin Scorsese, a partnership which continues today. Other films created out of their special partnership include Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, and Casino. De Niro’s incredible repertoire of films includes his Academy Awardwinning roles in The Godfather II and Raging Bull, as well as Oscar®-nominated turns for his work in The Deer Hunter, Taxi Driver, Awakenings, Cape Fear, and Silver Linings Playbook. De Niro has proven his versatility with his memorable dramatic roles in The Untouchables, Jackie Brown and Backdraft, and he’s had several successful comedies in his career, including Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers, Little Fockers, Analyze This, and the dramedy Midnight Run. De Niro, who made his directorial debut in 1993 with A Bronx Tale, in which he also starred, can currently be seen in Joker and The Irishman. De Niro is a recipient of a Screen Actors Guild Award for his work as a member of the cast of American Hustle. He has also received Screen Actors Guild Award nominations - individual and ensemble for his work for Silver Linings Playbook - and for his work alongside the cast of Marvin’s Room. De Niro is a seven-time Academy Award nominee, a six-time BAFTA nominee and a nine-time Golden Globe nominee. Most recently, De Niro received another SAG Award nomination as part of the cast for The Irishman. ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN TELEVISION
De Niro’s acting career has traversed into television where he garnered a SAG Awards nomination and four EMMY® nominations for his work both on and off-screen. For his performance as disgraced financier Bernie Madoff
in the HBO miniseries The Wizard of Lies, De Niro received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series, as well as EMMY and Golden Globe nominations. He won a Satellite Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film for his portrayal of Madoff, in The Wizard of Lies, and he received an EMMY nomination for his role, serving as executive producer, on the captivating television biopic. De Niro has also received numerous honors for his work behind the lens, most recently earning an EMMY nomination for his work as an executive producer on the Netflix original drama, When They See Us, a series based on the events surrounding the 1989 Central Park Five case for which Jharrel Jerome is nominated tonight. De Niro produced the series alongside Oprah Winfrey, Ava DuVernay, Jonathan King, Jane Rosenthal, Jeff Skoll, and Berry Welsh. Additionally, De Niro served as an executive producer for the NBC series About a Boy, starring Minnie Driver. PHILANTHROPIST AND ACTIVIST
New Yorkers know him as one of the driving forces behind the revitalization of downtown Manhattan into a center for the film industry. In 1989, he and Jane Rosenthal founded the Tribeca Film Center, the first commercial space in Tribeca dedicated to housing film, television, and entertainment companies. After the attacks of 9/11, De Niro and Rosenthal co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival as a way to breathe new life into the neighborhood and spur economic development through the arts. Now, on the onset of its 19th year, the festival brings hundreds of thousands of visitors downtown each year and is a prominent cultural event, not only for New Yorkers, but for the entire film industry. De Niro also serves as the co-founder and co-chair of the Tribeca Film Institute, which supports the work and stories of underserved filmmakers. Under the direction of De Niro, the Tribeca Film Institute created the “Untold Stories Program” with AT&T, which awards a one million dollar grant, mentorship opportunities, and distribution to underrepresented filmmakers to produce their film and premiere it at the Tribeca Film Festival. Additionally, De Niro’s Tribeca Film Festival partnered with CHANEL to develop “Through Her Lens,” The Tribeca CHANEL Women's Filmmaker Program, which promotes emerging and independent female voices. This multifaceted program champions up-and-coming women writers and directors in the United States, helping foster vital artists in their professional and artistic development. De Niro’s charitable efforts extend beyond the entertainment industry. He is also an active philanthropist within the world of AIDS, cancer, diabetes and Parkinson’s disease research, social justice advocacy, animal welfare, environmental protection, and education assistance programs.

A LETTER FROM THE SAG-AFTRA Foundation PRESIDENT Dear SAG Awards® Nominees, A heartfelt congratulations to all of you for being recognized by your peers for your stellar performances. No actor is an island. Each of us here tonight has had someone who has helped us along the way. In addition, the idea of the struggling actor is no myth. The reality for many of our fellow actors is that they are a paycheck away from living in their cars. God forbid they are in an accident or have a health crisis. For the last 34 years, our SAG-AFTRA Foundation has been raising money and granting millions of dollars in emergency financial and health assistance to create a safety net for all SAG-AFTRA artists and their families. Our Foundation has literally saved lives. It has also been quietly and humbly doing the hard work of growing the operation and expanding the free educational programming and professional resources for SAG-AFTRA artists on both coasts, online and nationwide. A solid foundation has been laid to support the artists of our industry, and from that, a skyscraper of supporters must be built to support our Foundation. That’s now my job. I’m here to build it, side-byside with our Actors’ Council, Entertainment Industry Council, Board and all of you tonight. The time is now and your fellow actors need help. As the new President, my goal is to raise $1.5 million for our Foundation in 2020. I need your help to achieve this goal. There are over 250 actors here this evening who have been nominated by their fellow actors. If each nominee gives a tax-deductible donation of at least $1000 to the Foundation, we will raise over a quarter of a million dollars for our Foundation following the SAG Awards®. This is the kick-off we need to raise $1.5 million by the end of the year. Our community depends on our Foundation, and our Foundation depends on us. I thank you for your excellence, your camaraderie and your support.
