The ceremony was a special one-hour, prerecorded event, but the A-list roster of actors and presenters brought more than a few surprises to the screen. LAST AWARDS SEASON proved that actors will find a way to make things work. So, although viewers and fashion aficionados alike were doubtlessly saddened to not see their favorites walk down the famous SAG Awards® silver carpet, the awards still brought style and grace to the occasion through Shutterstock, the official photographer of the SAG Awards, remotely capturing amazing at-home portraits. Some kept things relaxed and casual; others wore bold colors and patterns. But all brought a welcome flair to the industry’s favorite season. The 28th SAG Awards marks the return of the Red Carpet PreShow! Tune in at 2:30 p.m. PT / 5:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 27, for all of this year’s looks, as well as interviews and other moments, on sagawards.org, EW.com, people.com, and People and EW’s YouTube, Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as PeopleTV. the awards WHEN THE SAG AWARDS FIRST AIRED live on Feb. 25, 1995, it did something that no other film and television awards show had done before: It brought some of entertainment’s most noted performers together under one roof to celebrate one another. And for more than 27 years, it is that spirit of camaraderie that has made the awards well-known throughout the industry and an anticipated event for every union member across the country. “What I have always heard and felt from my fellow actors who have won The Actor ® is that it means so much more to them than other awards because of the recognition from their peers,” said SAG Awards Committee Chair JoBeth Williams. “Just to be nominated means you’ve already won.” After its hourlong special in 2021, the SAG Awards returns to the stage for its 28th 37

ceremony. This year’s show, produced in partnership with Avalon Harbor Entertainment, not only marks a return to its two-hour live format, but serves as a moment to celebrate the continued work of the industry and the talent of film, television and stunt performers. The SAG Awards Committee and production team have been hard at work putting this year’s show together, and while they have stayed mum about what members and viewers alike can expect, they were enthused to talk about its location. For the first time since 1997, the SAG Awards ceremony is taking place at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, which, at 35,000 square feet, touts itself as the largest and most versatile venue in Los Angeles. “The Barker Hangar is like a giant canvas; it gives us incredible room for creativity and its design has been at the forefront of our planning,” said Executive Producer Jon Brockett. “We want to create a space that feels intimate for our actors, while also making 39

said Executive Producer Kathy Connell. “It’s truly the actors’ party in the actors’ house.” Still, with the return of an in-person event comes the need to guarantee everyone’s safety. As the COVID pandemic continues and on-set guidelines remain firmly in place in Hollywood, production continues to monitor the situation and take precautionary measures. This has not only meant working closely with COVID experts, but also limiting the number of guests and requiring those present to provide proof of full vaccination and negative test results in order to attend. But, above all else, the SAG Awards ultimately remains an event that serves to aid the performing community. This year’s production continues the show’s longstanding tradition of raising funds for the SAG-AFTRA Foundation (see page 57). As many within the performing community continue to feel the effects of the COVID pandemic, the Foundation’s ongoing work to provide needed aid and programs to members is supported by awards show

Manager Sarah Barry. “Our sponsors are continuing their efforts this year, and we are thrilled to have them in our showroom once again. our members. This year marks the return of the SAG Life Achievement Award presentation, with Dame Helen Mirren as the 57th recipient. “It’s truly a special moment for someone to be honored by their peers in this way and recognized by the SAG Awards, not only for the incredible body of work they have, but for their humanitarian accomplishments. And what could be better than having Dame Helen in person? She’s an icon,” said Brockett. There’s no telling what the future holds as we all try our best to adjust to the changes in our world and industry, but the 28th Annual SAG Awards ceremony reminds us how important it is to honor one another. “The SAG Awards has always been about this incredible sense of family that these actors have with each other, and knowing that we are able to bring the show back in person and see so many friends and colleagues is going to be really amazing,” said Brockett.

It all begins with mother molds, silica rubber and plaster cases that are then filled with melted wax. After cooling, the wax figures are freed and artisans go to work cleaning and fixing imperfections. This can include smoothing wrinkles and removing air bubbles on more than 1,000 figures. Arms are then attached to each figure, followed by the hands shortly after. By this time, each statuette is now whole! The figures are now dipped in ceramic material, which serves as the beginning of the secondary mold. Then comes a wax slurry that adds more ceramic material to the statuette. This weeklong process is the most crucial, and by its end, a total of eight additional layers are added. The statuettes are then placed into an oven that helps to crystalize the ceramic and brings it to the temperature necessary to add melted bronze ingots to the mold.
TODD WAWRYCHUK X6
Once cooled, the second mold is broken with any remaining pieces sandblasted. Each statuette is attached to its base before being sent off for awards night!

THE SAG AWARDS CEREMONY on Feb. 27 will be an evening for SAG-AFTRA members to recognize their peers and celebrate the top performances of 2021. However, it’s not just about honors and statues, but giving back to the entire SAG-AFTRA community through the show’s annual benefiting charity, the nonprofit SAG-AFTRA Foundation. Many do not know that proceeds from the annual SAG Awards show and its sponsors (see page 63) help to maintain the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s vital safety net for SAG-AFTRA’s 160,000 members, which has been more critical than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Since 1985, the Foundation has been a lifeline for SAG-AFTRA members,” said SAG-AFTRA Foundation President Courtney B. Vance. “However, the economic and professional effects of the pandemic have had a monumental impact on our broad and diverse community. Gratefully, throughout these challenging times, our SAG-AFTRA family and industry friends have stepped up to help lift up members who needed it the most.” Since March 2020, the Foundation has granted more than $7 million in emergency assistance and disaster relief to over 7,500 SAG-AFTRA members and their families. The aid has helped these members with basic living expenses, such as rent, food and bills during COVID-19, as well as after natural disasters, including Hurricane and Tropical Storm Ida, the Texas winter storms, recent tornadoes and more. In addition, the Foundation swiftly transitioned all of its in-person programming online, offering more than 4,800 career-building programs virtually to more than 87,000 SAG-AFTRA participants from every local affiliate in the country. Members have been able to develop self-tape auditioning skills and learn about new software programs remotely, as well as attend accountability groups, receive voiceover training and get advice about setting up recording studios in their homes at no additional cost. One of the Foundation’s countless success stories comes from SAG-AFTRA New York Local member Vivienne Leheny, who has performed on stage, television and film, and worked in commercial voiceover for 20 years prior to delving into the Foundation’s free voiceover programs.
Member and actor Vivienne Leheny uses the SAG-AFTRA Foundation voiceover facility to record an audiobook.

“I came to the Foundation specifically to explore audiobooks, and it’s through the training and mentorship I received at the New York voiceover lab that an entirely new career was opened for me. I am so grateful to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation and to the excellent staff, engineers and voiceover professionals who shared their knowledge, experience and talent with me. It’s a pleasure to be able give back to the program that gave me so much,” said Leheny. Additionally, the Foundation has produced hundreds of Conversations at Home with acclaimed actors and casts, as well as The Business panels with the leading voices in the industry that tackle the major issues facing performers in these rapidly changing times. All of these Q&As and panels are recorded and posted to the Foundation’s YouTube channel and have received more than 20 million views to date.

Hele n Mirre n Named 57 t h Life Achie vement Award H onoree SAG-AFTRA’S 57th SAG LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD honoree is a true queen. A top-tier acting talent and star of stage and screen, Oscar winner Helen Mirren is a worthy addition to the list of legendary honorees. The 76-year-old London native has been acting since the mid ’60s. She brings poise, charisma and a mastery of the acting craft to each of her roles — so she was the natural choice to play the queen of England. She was made a Dame of the British Empire in 2003 and is the most decorated SAG Life Achievement recipient, with a total of 13 SAG Awards® nominations and five SAG Awards Actor wins. “Dame Helen Mirren is quite simply a brilliant and luminous talent,” SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher said. “Her work runs the gamut of characters, from a not-so-retired CIA superkiller and a ruthless Russian spy handler to a Hungarian cleaning lady and the most exquisite Elizabeth II. She began acting in school productions and, at the age of 18, joined the National Youth Theatre. Her work got her noticed, and two years later, she was invited to join the Royal Shakespeare Company. She takes pride in being a union member. “I’ve always been a unionist all my life. I’m a very proud member of SAG-AFTRA,” she said. “Without the protection of a union, really, you are thrown to the wolves, aren’t you? You are in a very savage world without that protection. Obviously, there is strength in numbers, and I have in fact been a part of union action more than once in my life.” She not only stands side by side with her fellow union members, she also has great affection for them. In an interview with SAG-AFTRA in December, Mirren had a message for union actors. “Thank you for being you. Thank you for choosing this ridiculous, dangerous, wonderful, creative, obsessive, profession that is the profession of being an actor,” she said. “[W]hen we open this beautiful parcel, it’s so brightly and perfectly wrapped with wonderful wrapping and on it, it says, ‘You are an actor,’ and you open this wonderful parcel, and in it are all kinds of beautiful surprises and heartbreak and difficulties and struggle and all of that. Mirren is a true original who has always done things her own way and remained true to herself. She gave an interview with The Guardian in 2015, shortly after she signed on to be a spokesperson for L’Oréal Paris. At 70, she was the oldest recipient of a major cosmetics contract — and as part of the deal, she insisted that her photos not be retouched. “It was about time that someone of my age, not necessarily me, did it,” she told The Guardian. “Certainly my whole life, one had these images of perfect, incredibly youthful girls shoved at you as what you should aspire to. And we’re not even talking about 25-yearolds, incidentally, we are talking about girls of 15. Who looks 15? It’s not fair.” Even so, Mirren has little reason to feel insecure. In a 2011 issue of Esquire, then65-year-old Mirren handily beat 25-yearold Megan Fox in a reader poll for Sexiest Woman Alive. But she has little tolerance for those who judge her by her looks alone. In 2016, a clip went viral of a 1975 interview in which Mirren calls out an interviewer for his sexist questions, while he remains oblivious to the inappropriateness of his queries. Perhaps one of the things that gives her an enduring appeal is her empathy and desire to use her fame to ease suffering in the world. She is deeply involved in numerous charitable causes in pursuit of that goal. Mirren has worked with Oxfam throughout the years to draw attention to humanitarian crises and the destructive effect of weapons on people who live in poor countries. In 1998, she traveled to South Africa and, in 2004, she visited northern Uganda, where she met with

children who had been kidnapped and forced into being soldiers. She also supports Meals on Wheels, which operates across America to address senior hunger and isolation, and SAY: The Stuttering Association for the Young, a national nonprofit organization that provides support, advocacy and life-changing experiences for young people who stutter. Additionally, Mirren was named an ambassador for Women for Women International, a charity that supports women who have been the victims of war by providing education and job skills training. Her global advocacy efforts also include work with Greenpeace; Freedom from Torture, a charity that provided torture victims with therapeutic care; and Refuge, a UK-based organization that helps to rebuild the lives of women and children who are survivors of violence and abuse. Whether it’s on screen, on the red carpet, advocating for important issues or onstage accepting an award, Mirren is always in her element. With her outspoken demeanor, refined acting talent and a wicked sense of humor, she knows she’s royalty. As she told Esquire in 2011, “Whenever I see the queen, I always think, ‘Oh, there I am!’” Helen Mirren receives her Life Achievement honor live during the SAG Awards on Sunday, Feb. 27 on TNT and TBS.

SINCE 1962, the SAG Life Achievement Award has been bestowed on performers with exceptional talent. But for all the iconic characters played and unforgettable lines spoken, one overarching criteria for selecting these performers is what they have accomplished off screen. Each recipient’s philanthropic contribution to society matches what they achieved artistically. Taken together, that’s what earns them the Life Achievement Award — a pinnacle of accomplishment in their rich lives.

ED ASNER, an accomplished actor, former
Screen Actors Guild president and Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award honoree, passed away Aug. 29 at the age of 91. Asner created one of the most memorable roles in television history — the gruff but loveable newsman Lou Grant on two hit television series for CBS: the comedy The Mary Tyler Moore Show from 1970–77 and the drama Lou Grant from 1977–82. His five Emmy Awards for that role, plus two additional Emmys, set a record for the most Emmys ever awarded to a male TV actor. In 1992, he received a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Hall of Fame in 1996. In 2001, Asner received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. Asner was equally formidable off screen, where he was an outspoken advocate for those he felt were victims of oppression or injustice. Prior to being elected Screen Actors Guild president in 1981, he was a frequent presence on the picket lines during the joint Screen Actors Guild/AFTRA 1980 TV/Theatrical strike, which affected a multitude of productions, including his own Lou Grant, and was among the nearly two-dozen stars participating in the Evening of Stars strike benefit at the Hollywood Bowl. In September 1981, Asner addressed a crowd of 8,000 trade union members at Los Angeles’ MacArthur Park at a Solidarity Day event, and was elected Screen Actors Guild president six weeks later, winning 52% of the vote. Asner went on to serve as a National Board member of both SAG and SAG-AFTRA periodically from 1985 until his death.

White was a prolific artist whose appeal crossed generational lines. She made an indelible mark on television as Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls and in many other roles throughout the decades. In 2009, she was presented the 46th SAG Life Achievement Award, not just for her enduring career, but also because of her extensive philanthropy, much of it in support of animal causes. White got her start in radio, and in the 1950s, she went on to be one of the first women to produce a television show. In the 1960s and 1970s, she was a regular on gameshows such as Password, The Hollywood Squares and The $25,000 Pyramid. In the 1980s, she would step behind the podium as host of a gameshow titled Just Men! The program was canceled after 65 episodes, but, as ever, White made an impression, and she became the first woman to win the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Game Show Host. In 2010, at the age of 88, she became the oldest person to host Saturday Night Live, and four years later, Guinness World Records named her the record-holder for the longest TV career for a female entertainer. Throughout her long career and life, White remained one of the most well-liked actors in the public eye. A 2011 poll found her to be the most popular and most trusted celebrity among Americans, beating out Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Will Smith and Johnny Depp.

He Followed His Conscience
WHEN THE ABOVE PHOTO WAS TAKEN at the AFL-CIO convention in New York on Nov. 17, 1981, Ed Asner was riding high. At the AFL-CIO Convention Nov. 17, 1981. SAG President Ed Asner shows actor/comedian Danny Thomas what he thinks of Robert’s Rules of Order!
October at the Century Plaza Hotel. On Nov. 2, he was elected president of Screen Actors Guild. The conventioneers gave Asner a standing ovation when he was introduced by AFL-CIO President Lane Kirkland and, as UPI explained, “When Asner sat down at his seat, sandwiched between the Auto Workers and Steelworkers delegations, he was jokingly
presented with a book on Robert’s Rules of Order by his colleagues in the Associated Actors and [Artistes] of America.” Asner aged but was never “old” — staying active in professional life until he passed on Aug. 29 at age 91. This two-term Screen Actors Guild president (1981–85) and National Board member acted on his beliefs, even when it cost
propel him to the SAG presidency in 1981. But on Feb. 15, 1982, in front of the State Department in Washington, D.C., Asner, Lee Grant, SAG National Board member Howard Hesseman and others presented a check for $25,000 to fund medical aid in civil war-wracked El Salvador for the communist guerrilla fighters opposing the United States-backed military dictatorship. Public backlash against Asner was swift. Soon, Lou Grant would be gone. On May 6, 1982, CBS announced it would not be renewing four of its shows: WKRP in Cincinnati, House Calls, Nurse and Lou Grant. The final episode aired Sept. 13, 1982. In 1984, Asner remarked, “I think the upheaval, the threats of boycott coupled with a fivepoint drop in [the ratings], permitted cancellation of the show … But my great regret was that CBS,

him personally. He became a household name just before his 41st birthday in 1970 — after 15-plus years as a supporting actor on stage and screen — as TV news producer Lou Grant on the half-hour sitcom, The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The hit show concluded in early 1977, but the Lou Grant character continued in a new award-winning 60-minute television drama, Lou Grant. Fame gave Asner the confidence to publicly act on his convictions. As Newsweek wrote in March 1982, “With the excuse of family and career concerns, he chose to listen to the ‘inner voice’ that warned him ‘not to speak too loudly’ … [but] with his career seemingly secure and his three teenage children old enough to handle his public scrutiny and vilification, Asner leaped into the fray.” Leap he did: In 1980, SAG and AFTRA called a strike in film and television and Asner was prominent on the picket lines, using his celebrity to draw attention to the issues and participating in the Evening of Stars strike benefit. This involvement helped
such a prestigious leader in television, didn’t put any effort into saving a show they had declared such pride in heretofore.’’ When the last Lou Grant aired, Tom Shales of The Washington Post wrote, “Tonight’s finale ends with a slow camera pull-back from the old Trib newsroom. We’re going to miss that place. We’re going to miss it plenty.” The same for Ed Asner — we’re going to miss him plenty. sagaftra.org
