CONFESSION OF AN AUTOMOBILE COLLECTOR INTERVIEW WITH A FANATIC
I first started out with matchbook cars I collected as many as I could. When matchbook cars were not enough, and I came of age to start a real collection I dug in. Then it quickly got to the point where you can’t have enough even though the costs are out of control. Then you don’t have that same thrill. But, because, having my own cars do thrill me. I am also thrilled at seeing someone else’s because I don’t have to worry about it being stolen, dinged, or paying insurance or upkeep. That’s where finding others with the same enthusiasm that you have and you can see their collection. You get the thrill every time you hear the sound of another car door or hood opens… even to the hum of the window going down. Coming from Detroit to Chicago, I found the Chicago auto scene to be an enticing and incredible piece of heaven. I now own 6 cars: One Rolls-Royce, a Mercedes Benz, Saturn GMC truck, BMW, a Corvette and a dodge Journey. I drive the GMC the most because it’s more practical. Driving The GMC most of the time makes it special when you get into anything else. Having the 6 cars allows me to experience all the facets of my life and personality. There is a car for the children, a car for my wife, a car for my wife and I, a car for the family and a of course two for myself.
One would say I’m a gregarious individual. I see no reason to be sad. When driving my Rolls Royce, I feel like I’m on top of the world. It’s a 1977 silver shadow. It does not matter the monetary value now. The value is in my heart. Recently this baby took me for 4 g’s and it was the first time I thought about selling it. Well you can’t sell a car that needs a water pump. So, I bit the bullet for the 4g’s it took to fix it and I’m in love all over again. Driving the corvette, I feel like a teenager. Varoom Varoom, I can hear the race car sound, wheels screeching, smell the burn of the tires closeness to the asphalt and sense the smoke of speed happening. I may be a little dare I say old for this line of thinking, however, if I must, I do like to indulge myself in regressive behaviors and act like someone almost 40 years younger. Back to the car; there are 450 horses under that sucker rides like a charm. Beautiful to look at too. When I ride along side some unsuspecting individual on the road, I rev my engine a couple of times to let the passenger know I’m there, and you need to take notice. I told you its juvenile. Work with me here.
When I drive the Mercedes, and I might add, I usually drive it to work. I feel like the business man that I am. I have the usual business like look of confidence on my face and I drive with good posture like I’m whistling a happy tune. I also drive this car to church. When the family and I are all dressed in our Sunday best, it’s a good feeling to know all are safe and sound and ready to enjoy our heavenly experience. We at times go out to eat after church just to add that icing on the cake so to speak to a family day out. The Saturn truck is for schlepping it around with the family when we go to our in the woods type family camping vacations. We even have the nerve to take it and off-roading just for the challenge. We like to push it that way just for the fun of it all. The funny part about it is that the car can take what abuse we give it. We try not to go too crazy but the drive is in me to take it to the maximum. The Beemer, BMW, That’s my wife’s car. She doesn’t drive it much. But that was the excuse I gave when I bought it. I then gave it to my father who has now given it to my son who is away at college. For my wife, she now drives the Saturn….The most. I have met so many nice people. No one notable, just car fanatics like myself. However I should back up and mention a notable individual in Mr. Paul Burt. www.theburtcollection.com We met at a recent auto show and he was eager to tell me of his collection of rare automobiles. Here is a shout out to him and as well a picture of one of his cars.
Courtesy www.theburtautocollection.com facebook We had a progressive dinner last week where we went from home to home with lots of food and drink surrounding the cars we love. There were corvettes, mustangs, Camaros, all sorts of interesting and exotic cars to view; and oh the stories that go with them. I was enthralled. Went to the Kendal county fair ground for orphaned cars such as AMC which are now no longer manufactured, and the Pontiac, and Plymouth, Saturn, I bum rushed my wife to get her to come as she often does into coming. My wife and I spent the day there from 9am to 11pm. We had conversations galore of the old and new cars and the performance and pleasure they bring. After seeing so many cars over my lifetime, I still love that thrill of driving it off the lot and seeing that it is mine. I can never get enough.
I WOULD LIKE TO SAY, THANK YOU TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED IN THIS SEGMENT OF CARS, WHEELS, ANTIQUES, & DEALS. ENJOY
