Whether you want to perfect your instrumental or vocal skills, or start from scratch, you can do it here. We’re adding new classes all the time so check our website for updated information. If you enjoy performing there will be plenty of opportunities for you to show off your skills. Some of our groups even get to perform on stage with visiting performers. Did you know we also offer VIP experience days? We can create bespoke VIP music-making experiences – go backstage, record your music and take a copy home with you. Most classes take place at Sage Gateshead and Gateshead Old Town Hall. Please check timetable for class venue. ABILITY LEVEL ABSOLUTE BEGINNER Returning to music after a while or you believe that you can’t sing or play a note. These groups are designed to help you to conquer your fears as well as develop basic skills and technique so that you can quickly take your musicmaking to the next level. There are no auditions and no prior skills or experience is needed. BASIC UNDERSTANDING Keen to improve your technique and repertoire. These classes work as direct progression from our Absolute Beginner classes and are for people who can already play a little. INTERMEDIATE MUSICIAN Confident in your own ability but haven’t sung in a choir or played in a group before. If you’d like to try a new genre or something a little more challenging, this is the place for you to develop and improve your skills. There are no auditions but some experience and loads of enthusiasm is required. CONFIDENT MUSICIAN Looking to perfect your skills and use your knowledge and experience to its full potential. Sessions are likely to be genrespecific with performance as a key element of the group’s aims. You may be required to audition. Commitment and a willingness to enjoy are essential.
Play GUITAR Our friendly and knowledgeable guitar tutors will guide you through from your early days as a guitarist, to a guitar star, supporting you along the way. Absolute Beginner Guitar Wednesday, 6.30-7.30pm No knowledge required, you’ll learn the basic chords and strumming techniques which will equip you with the skills to play your favourite songs. Participants should bring their own guitar.

Group 2
Good open chord knowledge is required and you’ll be introduced to barre chords in depth. You’ll look at songs with and without barre chords and a light introduction to soloing ideas. Previous songs include The Beatles’ With A Little Help From My Friends, Willy Mason’s We Can Be Strong and Tom Jones’ It’s Not Unusual. Intermediate Guitar: Next Steps Wednesday, 7.30-8.30pm Good open chord knowledge and some knowledge of barre chords required. You will work on songs with riffs and soloing ideas using the minor pentatonic scales. You will also develop rhythm and picking techniques. Previous songs include John Mayer’s Queen Of California and The Beatles’ Blackbird.

Guitar Stars Thursday, 7.45-9.15pm Good open chord and barre chord knowledge, some riffing and soloing confidence required. In this group you will combine chords with riffing and soloing within a progression. This class will give you confidence to move around the fretboard with purpose! Previous songs include Cream’s Sunshine Of Your Love and Nina Simone’s Feeling Good.
Electric Guitars Monday, 6-7.30pm This class is for established players interested in learning electric guitar techniques like riffing and soloing. Learn from famous rock songs in a clear step-by-step format. Think Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Free and Cream!

BASS GUITAR Beginner Bass Guitar Thursday, 6-7.30pm Get started on the bass! Find your way into whatever music you want to play by learning the fundamentals of bass guitar from an engaging tutor. No experience required, just a love of low frequencies! Amps are provided but participants should bring their own bass. All About That Bass Thursday, 7.45-9.15pm An intermediate bass guitar class aimed at those wanting to achieve more with their bass guitar. Ideal for those with basic skills who want to broaden their horizons with some popular classics.
FLUTE Flute Choir Monday, 6.30-8pm The Flute Choir is aimed at those who are Grade 3-5 standard. This is an opportunity for flautists to play together, explore a wide variety of music and develop their skills whilst having fun along the way!
STEEL PANS Beginner Steel Pans Monday 6.30-8pm & 8-9.30pm Bringing the sunshine to Gateshead! Learn to play steel pans as part of an ensemble in a fun environment. A wide range of repertoire is covered and the sessions are relaxed and friendly. Intermediate Steel Pans Thursday, 6.30-8pm Perfect for those who’ve already attended the Beginner Steel Pans course. This is the ideal next step – broaden your repertoire and hone your skills to take your panning to the next level.
Don' t Panic Steel Pan Band Thursday, 8-9.30pm Playing a wide variety of repertoire, this energetic and exciting ensemble brings the sounds of the Caribbean to the North East. Sessions are fun and rewarding, furthering skills and musicianship whilst learning music to performance standard.
Cobweb Orchestra Wednesday, 1-4pm A friendly and welcoming group open to players of all standards. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or have been playing for years, you will find something of interest in the varied repertoire. BANDS Adult Rock Band Thursday, 6-8pm Unleash your inner rockstar! This band will explore rock, pop and soul through the decades from 50s rock ‘n’ roll to modern pop hits. With electric and acoustic guitars, bass, drums, percussion, keyboard and singing, this group is for those who have been making music for a while but have not sung in a choir or played in a group before. Theatre Orchestra NEW Tuesday, 5.30-6.45pm This group will encourage you to go beyond the written music as you delve into how to capture and play the emotion behind what is written on the page. Open to any instrument including steel pan, guitar, tuned percussion, brass, woodwind and ukuleles.
Bede Wind Friday, 7-9pm A community wind band, now in its 26th year, that plays a wide range of music and performs around ten concerts every year in the North East with occasional concert tours abroad. SAXOPHONE Absolute Beginner Saxophone Thursday, 6.15-7pm Aimed at people who have no prior experience of playing the saxophone, this introductory course will teach you how to play sax from scratch – even how to put the instrument together. Sax In The City Thursday, 8.15-9.30pm Studying primarily jazz, funk and soul, in this group you will experience playing in parts and delve further into the theory. Previous repertoire includes songs by Earth Wind & Fire, John Coltrane, Michael Jackson and Miles Davis. This group would suit players who’ve progressed through the saxophone classes in the Adult Programme. Classically Sax Thursday, 5.45-7pm Studying repertoire which ranges from folk & traditional to classical and classics from films and musicals, you will experience playing in parts and delve further into the theory. Previous repertoire includes pieces from Pirates of the Caribbean, The Sound of Music, Henry Mancini and old English folk songs such as Dance To Your Daddy. This group would suit players who’ve progressed through the saxophone classes in the Adult Programme.
Intermediate Saxophone Thursday, 7-8.15pm Ideal for those who have covered the basics of saxophone playing, feel reasonably confident and want to develop their skills further. This group would suit players who’ve progressed through the saxophone classes in the Adult Programme. Saxophone Ensemble Thursday, 8.15-9.30pm This exciting ensemble provides a fantastic opportunity to play sax with others. You will be introduced to a wide variety of repertoire and hone your skills. The Saxophone Ensemble is aimed at players of Grade 3-5 standard although those of a higher grade are also welcome.
UKULELE Absolute Beginner Ukulele Wednesday, 6.30-7.30pm You will learn the basic chords and techniques enabling you to play the ukulele with confidence. After just one session you will be able to impress friends and family. Sessions are relaxed, fun and supportive. Beginner Ukulele Wednesday, 7.30-8.30pm This group is perfect for people who’ve attended the Absolute Beginner Ukulele course and want to take their ukulele playing to the next level. You will learn new repertoire, develop your technique and grow in confidence, setting you on your way to our Intermediate Ukulele group. Intermediate Ukulele Wednesday, 6.30-7.30pm Enjoy wide ranging repertoire with an ear for the unexpected. Improve your chord knowledge and learn crucial shortcuts to accelerate your playing. This group is for intermediate players who have the basic chords down and are interested in progressing to a higher level.
Themed Ukuleles Wednesday, 7.30-9pm For intermediate ukulele players who are keen to try new and interesting repertoire. Each term will explore a different theme. Previous themes have included Simon and Garfunkel and songs from Back to the Future. Uke Folk Monday, 6.30-8pm For ukulele players who are keen to try new and interesting repertoire. This group will play folk songs predominantly from the folk revival, Celtic and Americana backgrounds.
Intermediate Ukulele Next Steps Monday, 8-9pm For confident players, this is the next step in the ukulele journey. Refine your skills and repertoire knowledge with players of a similar ability. Uke Troupe Wednesday, 7.30-9pm A fun and informal ukulele group which explores familiar favourites and less familiar contemporary repertoire. Prior experience of playing the ukulele is required and players will work on developing skills, technique and musicianship. There will also be regular performance opportunities.
sing Magenta Singers Monday, 1.30-3pm The Magenta Singers are a group for people of any age who are living with acquired aphasia, run in association with the NETA Aphasia Support Centre. This friendly, supportive group sing accompanied repertoire from a wide range of musical genres including pop, blues and folk, with the aim of developing skills and working towards performances. No experience necessary. £4.50 per session. Payable weekly in advance or on the door. NETA is an independent charity for people with aphasia across the North East region. Streetwise Opera Tuesday, 1-3pm Have fun singing a different opera each term in a friendly, relaxed and creative atmosphere. The sessions focus on performance skills, having fun, learning by ear and working together. For anyone who would benefit from a boost in confidence, self-esteem and the chance to meet new people. Sounds Good to Me Wednesday, 3.30-5pm A group for adults with learning disabilities who have a love of singing. This is a chance to sing for fun in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Find Your Voice Wednesday, 7-8.30pm Discover the voice you never knew you had. This is a group singing lesson which focuses on developing good technique from the start, singing simple harmonies and explaining sheet music in an informal, supportive and fun way. Caedmon Choir Tuesday, 8-9.30pm An independent community choir whose repertoire includes traditional and contemporary songs including songs from other countries and cultures, in a wide range of styles. Blue Jazz Voices Monday, 7-9pm The group works on improvisation, repertoire, vocal technique and performance working specifically with jazz and blues repertoire to develop a practical approach to solo singing and performance. Sage Gateshead Chamber Choir Monday, 7-9pm This forty-strong choir rehearses and performs a broad and exciting repertoire in the building and around the region. It is an active, lively choir and spontaneous singing opportunities are a regular feature. You will need to be able to read music and hold a line in harmony. Project: Singing Wednesday, 7-9pm This choir is for choral singers who are looking for a challenge. This a cappella ensemble focuses on a particular theme or composer from the classical tradition each term. This is a voice tested choir but does not require sight singing. To join please contact adultprogramme@ sagegateshead.com Mood Indigo Singers NEW Thursday, 7.30-9.30pm Sage Gateshead’s latest choral group, Mood Indigo Singers, is searching for experienced singers and music readers. This choir, for voice tested singers, will learn and perform sophisticated arrangements of great jazz, pop and gospel music. This chamber choir will start small, so new singers need to be confident of holding a harmony line in a small section.
LARGE SCALE SINGING Join In and Sing: Rock and Pop Sunday 20 September 2015, Sage Gateshead, 10am-4.45pm Join choir leader Sharon Durant and learn a range of pop and rock songs from past to present as well as elements of musical theatre. This will be followed by the chance to sing with a live band on Sage One stage. Songs will be taught by ear within a relaxed atmosphere and vocal techniques will be learnt throughout the day. Although no-one is required to sing on their own, there may be opportunities for small group singing if participants are interested. No prior singing experience required. Sing Together: Brahms Requiem rehearsals Every Wednesday from 23 September 2015, Gateshead Old Town Hall, 7.15-9.15pm No auditions, no prior singing experience required and you don’t need to be able to read music. BANDS Basic Band 8.15-9.30pm This group is perfect for people who have little or no experience of playing in a group with other musicians. You’ll learn new repertoire as well as how bands work and learn together. This band is suitable for people in the absolute beginner classes as well as those with a little more confidence. Harmony Band 8.15-9.30pm Harmony Band is for anyone who would like to be in a band and explore harmony singing. The group will use instrumentation as well as vocals to create harmony filled arrangements of folk songs. The group is for beginner or intermediate level instrumentalists who would like a new challenge.
Percussion NEW 8.15-9.30pm Explore all aspects of percussion within traditional music, including but not limited to Bodhrán, Cajon, and hand percussion. Band with Song 7-8.15pm Whether you’re new to folk or confident in the genre, if you like singing with instruments then this is the group for you. Previously this class has featured songs by artists such as Show of Hands, Bellowhead and Kate Rusby. You can sing, play or do both. Intermediate Band 7-8.15pm For people who feel reasonably confident on their instrument and are ready for a step up into a performing band. The Intermediate Band produces more complex arrangements and studies more challenging repertoire than the Basic Band. Folk Rock Band NEW 7-8.15pm Play music from your favourite folk rock bands and become your own! This band will have access to a drum kit and amplifiers.
Carnival Band by Ear NEW 7-8.15pm An intermediate band with a twist. No notation will be given out for this ensemble; not during or after the classes. The aim of the ensemble is to develop aural and ‘learning by ear’ skills whilst arranging music in a band setting. The music will be lively and energetic. The tutor will ensure that everyone is catered for and has a part to play in the arrangements and it’s advised to bring a small recording device so you can practice at home.
Advanced Band 7-8.15pm Fast tunes, emotive and evocative arrangements, and lots of fun. Some learning is done aurally and some with notation. The group will be divided into two bands in the first week of term. Advanced Ceilidh band 7-8.15pm The advanced ceilidh band is for anyone who likes to play for dance. The aim is to get enough sets together, at the right speed, and to be good enough to play for dance. Whether you’re a choral or melody player you’ll have a great time exploring what makes a great ceilidh band, how to provide lift and groove and to work for each dance specifically.
Beginner Clog Dancing 7-8.15pm For those who have an understanding of the basics and are ready for the next step with repertoire picked specifically to increase technical ability.
DANCE Traditional dance is a great way to increase fitness levels and have fun along the way. Absolute beginner Irish Step Dance NEW 7-8.15pm This class will look at light shoe step dance, including the beginner’s reel and the light jig, in a fun and easygoing manner. Please wear practical lightweight shoes for this class.
Intermediate and Advanced Clog Dancing 8.15-9.30pm Classes specifically designed to increase your repertoire whilst pushing your technical ability meaning that you are confident in performance.
VOCAL Folk Choir 7-8.15pm Folk Choir is your chance to sing folk and traditional music in 3 and 4 part harmony. The group will be given word sheets but no notation and will aim to be off copy completely for performances. You need no previous knowledge of folk music to join this group, just a passion for good songs and singing.

Music Theory with Paul Edis Saturday 19 Sept 2015, 9 Jan & 23 Apr 2016 Sage Gateshead 10am-12noon These three sessions will cover the essentials of music theory, including how to read music and how what is written down relates to what we hear, how chords and harmony work, understanding rhythms and time signatures and much more! Each session will include elements of performance and composition in a hands-on approach to music theory. Attendance at all three isn’t essential, although it is encouraged. Join the Dots - Music Reading for Singers with Simon Fidler Saturday 3 Oct 2015, 13 Feb & 28 May 2016 Sage Gateshead 10am-2pm If you love singing, but wish you could read music, then come and discover how to find your way around notation, led by conductor Simon Fidler. The course is suitable for absolute beginners, or for those who want to consolidate basic skills learnt at previous sessions. The course will start with pulse and rhythm then move on to reading notes from the page. Cost: £15 (£12 concession) Scratch Wind Band with Laura Reavley Saturday 31 Oct 2015 Gateshead Old Town Hall, 10am-3pm A day to celebrate wind bands! Bring your instrument with you no matter your ability level or experience. Fingerstyle, Open Tuning and Percussive Guitar with Ben Church Sunday 22 November 2015, Sage Gateshead, 11am-3pm Come and explore the ever-growing contemporary technique of percussive guitar and its relationship to open tunings and fingerstyle. Join Celtic Connections’ Danny Kyle award-winner Ben Church in combining basic finger patterns with right hand tapping. You’ll also explore the guitar as a drum and look at the flexibility and limitations of open tunings. Some existing knowledge of finger style, an ability to think outside the box and an acoustic steel-string guitar are essential. Cost: £30 (£25 concession)
Sing & Strum with Dave wood Saturday 20 February 2016, Sage Gateshead, 10.30am-1pm A workshop aimed at intermediate level strummers who struggle to strum and sing at the same time. The workshop will look at strumming patterns of varying complexity and set them to well known and less well known songs to improve technique. Practice strumming and singing and work on piecing these together as the workshop progresses. Suitable for any strummed instrument playing chords. This workshop will take you through the many applications of the CAGED System, a method for mastering the fretboard on guitar. We will be learning new chord voicings, inversions, scales, arpeggios and modes in every key using the open major chords we learn at the start of our journey. Cost: £30 (£25 concession)

Book for all three terms and save 10% Full price per year £180 (Concession price per year £114) Double-up Deal Enrol onto one class and get any other class at the concessionary rate (termly classes only). Handling fee £1.50 per ticket (up to 10 charges per transaction) which applies to all bookings. Fee is waived for walk-up cash sales and tickets costing £5 or less. When making a term booking, the fee is £2.50 per transaction. Fees will be retained in the event of an exchange or refund. Try and Buy We’d love you to try our classes, but if it isn’t right for you, we will give you a full refund as long as you inform us of your decision within the first two weeks of term. If you haven’t paid for your class by the third week of term, your place on the course will be reviewed.
