welcome Courses, Classes and Workshops If you’re looking to get involved in music making at any level: beginner, experienced, or advanced – whether learning an instrument, joining a band, or taking part in a singing group, there’s something for everyone here. Sing, Play and Dance sessions for babies and young children with their families; a Saturday School for young musicians; and Adult and Silver programmes where you can learn with our inspiring musicians in a relaxed, friendly and supportive group of like-minded people. Enrol now, meet other budding musicians and begin your musical journey, whatever your chosen instrument or style! Our very welcoming and relaxed venue offers the perfect place for you to meet with fellow participants for coffee and cake before or after your class making your regular visit to us not just about music learning but much more than that. Often you’ll find there are music performances taking place in the cafe, sometimes even by peers from other groups and if you still haven’t had enough music then you could continue your time with us by attending a concert in Sage One or Sage Two – there’s bound to be something you’ll enjoy.

Jazz Attack

A non-auditioned ensemble for those aged 11–16. Jazz Attack is the place for young musicians to experience spontaneous music making and to be creative, learn new ideas and approaches to improvisation, develop the ability to play by ear, and gain invaluable ensemble skills. £75 per term

Folkworks Saturdays

Saturdays 2 – 3.30pm

A non-auditioned ensemble for those aged 10–16. This is a fun, folk ensemble for young musicians at all levels and experience of folk and traditional music who want to develop their ability to play by ear and read music amongst other musical skills. £75 per term

PARTNERSHIP CLASS Swing Bridge Singers

Fridays 5 - 6.30pm

A non-auditioned a cappella choir for 13–18 year olds. Presented by Swing Bridge Singers This young choir sings in gorgeous close harmony under the direction of Andrew Scott. Fast tunes, emotive and evocative arrangements, and lots of fun. Some learning is done aurally and some with notation.

Whether you’re a choral or melody player you’ll have a great time exploring what makes a great ceilidh band, how to provide lift and groove and to work for each dance specifically.

The Northumbrian Ensemble You’ll work as an ensemble looking at melody, style and ensemble playing, leading to you being confident to join in sessions but also to fit into playing in folk bands.

Explore all aspects of percussion within traditional music including, but not limited to, Bodhran, Cajon and hand percussion.

You’ll work to improve your understanding of style across a number of different areas and will aim to be confident to play in sessions and performances.

Pass It On – The Tradition In Your Hands (Heritage Lottery Fund award) As part of Pass It On – The Tradition in Your Hands (a 12-month project exploring our folk heritage) Alistair Anderson and others will give specialist lectures on our Folkworks Tuesday programme. Each class will receive one session on the subject of regional heritage using archives and historic collections, brought to life through performance and learning.

Magenta Singers

The Magenta Singers are a group for people of any age who are living with acquired aphasia, run in association with the NETA Aphasia Support Centre. This supportive group sing accompanied repertoire from a wide range of musical genres with the aim of developing skills and working towards performances. No experience necessary. Payable weekly, in advance or on the door. £4.50 per session.

Sounds Good to Me

Wednesday 3.30 - 5pm

A group for adults with learning disabilities who have a love of singing. Carers and support workers are welcome at no extra cost. There are occasional performance and recording opportunities. Payable weekly, in advance or on the door. £3.50 per session.

Music Therapy 1:1 Music therapy is a specialist use of music to help people. For some it has physical benefits, for others emotional or social ones. Our qualified Music Therapists are experienced in helping people with a range of challenges including autism, dementia, mental health problems, stroke, brain injury, depression and lifethreatening or terminal illness. Steel Pan group for beginners.

We have seven Steel Pan Bands within the Silver Programme and each group plays its own set of popular repertoire. You can progress from the Silver beginners group or from another steel pan group. Each group learns a different repertoire so you may need to catch up with old repertoire as well as learning new tunes. The chance to sing songs from operas, operettas, opera choruses and arias with occasional classical and sacred pieces and traditional folk songs. Suitable for anyone who can follow a part.
