Loudon Wainwright III is a true oneoff. His songs can be heart-warming, hilarious, intensely personal, life-affirming, and sometimes just indefinably ingenious – sometimes all at the same time. Loudon Wainwright songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, Rufus Wainwright and Mose Allison, among others.

IBERIAN COLOURS

IBERIAN COLOURS is a journey inspired by the relationship between Spanish composers and Iberia’s traditional music. Traditional music in Spain has long been an important source of inspiration for many Spanish composers: Falla, Mompou, Granados, Albéniz, and Toldrà, to name a few. More intensely since the end of the 19th-century—and especially through the 20th as a consequence of Musical Nationalism—Spanish composers have been inspired by the lyrics, melodies, rhythms and harmonies of traditional music. The guitar, as the predominant instrument of Spanish folk heritage, was one of their main sources of inspiration. Maria Camahort, guitar and arrangements, Violeta García, voice and violin and Laura Ruhí-Vidal, soprano present a captivating programme with music from different regions of Spain and Spanish speaking cultures.

Friday 28 October, 20.00, Sage Two, £24.19 Tony Joe White reigns supreme as one of the true masters of get-down funky bluesy swamp rock music.

TONY JOE WHITE

Tony Joe White grew up on a cotton farm in northwest Louisiana, the wellspring that has nourished his mysterious, magical songs for more than 50 years. From his first club gigs 50 years ago and since his debut album Black and White in 1969, which featured his Top Ten pop hit Polk Salad Annie, his childhood memories have taken shape in his songs. Among the many artists who have recorded his songs are Dusty Springfield, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, George Jones, Hank Williams Jr. and Elvis Presley.

Saturday 29 October NRFH 17.00, £10.75

MARISA ANDERSON AND LAURA CANNELL This very special double bill brings together two solo performers who each find wondrous ways to evoke ghosts through music. Itinerant US blues-folk guitarist Marisa Anderson pairs up with singular UK fiddle and recorder composer Laura Cannell, each casting spells through strings, wind, melody and a certain spectral beauty borne of the places and histories they have absorbed on their own personal-musical journeys. Marisa Anderson's playing is fluid and masterful, featuring compositions and improvisations that reimagine the landscape of American music. Her deeply original work applies elements of minimalism, electronic music, drone and 20th century classical music to compositions based on blues, jazz, gospel and country music. Based in rural East Anglia, Laura Cannell’s work encompasses both wild animal calls and long forgotten liturgical fragments, which drawn through Laura’s music seem to originate from the same, ahistorical place. With a background in traditional folk, early and experimental music, she creates a solitary minimalist chamber music, where one player makes all the harmonies. “Her sound has strength in restless variety…Anderson’s playing is heartfelt and utterly American- free from grandstanding and steeped in respect for the old tradition.” WIRE “One of the most exciting instrumentalists around” The Guardian Sunday 30 October, 19.45, NRFH, £16.13

CHRIS WOODS GROOVE ORCHESTRA

Chris Woods, guitar & loops, Christian Ballistrari, synth, Chris Jones, double bass A UK based instrumental phenomenon – guitarist Chris Woods, recording as ‘Chris Woods Groove’ and ‘The Chris Woods Groove Orchestra’, blends ear bending dropped tuned grooves with endearing stories to create his performances. There is an eerie feel to his music; a dark jazz texture driven by explosive guitar percussion. A guitarist, composer, performer, producer, and an educator, touring across the globe appearing at festivals including Glastonbury Festival, Guitar Summit at Kings Place, the Mikulášsky Jazz Festival (Slovakia) and others, performing in art houses, theatres and music shows such as the NAMM in LA. His mind-bending guitar approach is exceptional, a concert by an amazing young artist not to be missed!
