sage gateshead EVENTS DIARY SEPTEMBER - November 2015
Kacey Musgraves Monday 9 November
Folkworks presents Eliza Carthy’s Legendary Nights What is Folkworks? Folkworks is one of the founding organisations of Sage Gateshead. It provides great opportunities enjoy and participate in traditional music, song and dance. As part of Folkworks, we run our adult, youth and junior summer schools which have inspired thousands of musicians. Some, such as Nancy Kerr, Robert Harbron and Rachel and Becky Unthank, have gone on to make professional careers in music. ‘ Legendary Nights’ are a series of events, run by Folkworks Artistic Associate and celebrated musician Eliza Carthy, that combine folk music, spoken word, comedy, dancing and more. Here Eliza explains the idea behind the nights and also her plans for the future. I’ve seen so many great evenings around the country, and I had the idea to bring these together to stage in Gateshead. When you tour the country as much as I do, you have the opportunity to visit those places and see the way they do things, to understand the many different ideas of what constitutes a Legendary Night. Over the years in folk clubs, pubs, festivals and theatres, I have seen floor singers, DJs, raffles, performance poets, dancing, comedy, art and music. I have seen a grown man perform Albert and the Lion in Chaucerian English wearing a cushion on his head. The things I have seen! I hoped, with this occasional series, I could bring a little of that to Gateshead.
Up in Edinburgh, I first discovered the Soundhouse Organisation through word-ofmouth, and had the chance to see The Bevvy Sisters and Roberta Pia (Some Chick Called Bob) there in Douglas Robertson’s house for myself. I have known The Bevvy Sisters’ Heather Macleod for a very long time, having helped over the years with the harmony singing on my albums. She is a great singer/songwriter in her own right as well as member of celebrated The Loveboat Big Band, La Boum! and many other Edinburgh music outfits. The Soundhouse Organisation has rightly gained a reputation for seriously enjoyable, underground affairs and so I had to include them in our Legendary Night in March earlier this year. Keep an eye out in Scotland for further adventures as they move to larger venues. Sheffield’s Bright Phoebus Folk Club couldn’t be missed out. With their distinct poster art, all-star house band (comprising Martin Simpson, members of Bellowhead and occasionally Richard Hawley of Longpigs and Pulp fame) and unforgettable raffle prizes courtesy of Fay Hield, they had to come too, which is why we were so pleased to welcome them to Gateshead Old Town Hall in January last year. Finally for this year, on 19 September at Gateshead Old Town Hall again, we are showcasing the incredible atmosphere and eclectic booking policy of the famous La Rosa Hotel in Whitby, my home town. La Rosa and I started the Famous Flower folk club together a few years ago and the basement gigs have continued with everything from Victorian lantern shows to opportunities to see headline acts, such as Bella Hardy in the rarefied surroundings of David Owen’s distinctive decor and instantly recognisable pop/vintage art. For this show we are expecting a selection of David’s work plus a chance to sing lustily in the cafe bar, and a fabulous headline act in the shape of Lucy Ward. There may be a few more surprises too. We can’t wait to see you there, Eliza Carthy. Folkworks Artistic Associate
