returning to music after a while or you believe that you can’t sing or play a note. These groups are designed to help you to conquer your fears as well as develop basic skills and technique so that you can quickly take your music-making to the next level. There are no auditions and no prior skills or experience needed.

YOU HAVE A BASIC UNDERSTANDING and are keen to improve your technique and repertoire. These classes work as a direct progression from our Absolute Beginner classes and are for people who can already play a little.

YOU’VE BEEN MAKING MUSIC FOR A WHILE or you’re confident in your own ability

but haven’t sung in a choir or played in a group before. If you’d like to try a new genre or something a little more challenging, this is the place for you to develop and improve your skills. No auditions, some experience and loads of enthusiasm required.

looking to perfect your skills and use your knowledge and experience to its full potential. Sessions are likely to be genre-specific with performance as a key element of the group’s aims and you may be required to audition. An open mind, commitment and a willingness to enjoy are essential.

Rock Bands SILVER ROCK BAND Thursdays, 2.30-4pm Playing classic rock from the 50s, 60s and 70s. This ever popular band just keeps getting bigger. Come along to explore your inner rockstar! ROOTS ROCK Thursdays, 4-5.30pm A rock band line-up covering the folk and country side of rock - Neil Young, The Byrds, Hank Williams, Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention and many more.

SOLID ROCK Fridays, 11am-12.30pm A large band focusing on more modern rock classics from the 90s and 00s. CLASSIC ROCK Wednesdays, 1-2.30pm Ever wanted to join a rock or pop band? This session will give you the opportunity to do just that. Open to ability levels from beginner upwards, this brand new band will cover a wide range of rock and pop classics and help develop skills and techniques for vocalists and instrumentalists.

stringed instruments SILVER BEGINNER BLUEGRASS Tuesdays, 10.30-11.30am For mandolin, banjo and ukulele. This group is for absolute beginners. Learn the basic skills needed to play in a roots/folk band. SILVER BEGINNER GUITAR Fridays, 1-2.30pm This absolute beginner class will help you get to grips with the basics on your way to joining a band. SILVER IMPROVER GUITAR SKILLS Thursdays, 10.30am-12pm Improve your guitar skills in this intermediate group that plays a wide variety of tunes. SILVER BANJO GROUP Tuesdays,12-1.30pm Develop your existing skills and gain experience of playing with others.

SILVER FOLK BAND Tuesdays, 3.30-5pm For instrumentalists and singers with an interest in folk music. Learn folk tunes and songs with the opportunity to bring your own suggestions and work on new arrangements. No prior band experience necessary. SILVER MANDOLIN ORCHESTRA Thursdays, 10.30am-12pm Improve and develop your mandolin skills and technique in this friendly group.

SILVER SKIFFLE BAND Fridays, 3.30-5pm Traditional skiffle band featuring guitar, mandolin, washboard, singing and tea-chest bass. This band plays 20s-30s blues plus American and English folk songs by artists such as Leadbelly and Lonnie Donegan. PICK ‘N’ MIX Thursdays, 1-2.30pm For those wanting to learn advanced guitar techniques including fingerpicking, soloing and slide playing.

SING ‘N’ STRUM Thursdays, 12.30-2pm For those interested in singing and playing the guitar. This performance group is for more experienced guitar players.

SILVER BLUEGRASS BAND Tuesdays, 1.45-3.15pm For singers and instrumentalists keen to learn Appalachian and American roots music. Guitars, ukuleles, banjos and mandolins all welcome.

stringed instruments Ukulele SILVER BEGINNER UKULELE Thursdays, 10.30-11.30am An introduction for absolute beginners. Simple chord charts and well known songs are used to develop skills within a small group, giving players the confidence to progress to intermediate classes and larger groups.

SILVER IMPROVER UKULELE Thursdays, 12.30-1.45pm The next step once you have learnt the basics. Develop skills and gain confidence within a group setting. SILVER UKULELE BAND Thursdays, 2-3.30pm A friendly, fun and relaxed group with a varied repertoire. Soprano, tenor and baritone ukulele players all welcome.

SILVER UKULELE EXTRA Thursdays, 3.45-4.45pm Gain confidence and master new chords and repertoire used in the Silver Ukulele Band. This group is for those who have moved from the improvers group and are new to the band’s repertoire.


PERCUSSION SILVER CHIMES Mondays, 2-4pm A group using bellplates (a modern alternative to hand bells) to play harmonised arrangements of folk, classical and popular music. The ability to read music is helpful but not essential. People with different levels of musical experience can enjoy playing bellplates, working together and sharing ideas. Regular attendance expected. Peer led. SILVER SAMBANISTAS Wednesdays, 11am-12.30pm This energetic Samba band plays traditional and original pieces. Using traditional Brazilian drums and hand percussion, this group will get you into the carnival spirit. All levels of ability welcome. AFRICAN PERCUSSION Wednesdays, 1-2.30pm Explore African rhythms using traditional instruments including djembes and bells.

ADVANCED PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE Wednesdays, 3-4.30pm This exciting ensemble plays complex and intricate pieces for competent percussionists.

Steel Pans SILVER PAN BANDS We currently have seven Silver Pan Bands taking place on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays (please check individual listings on pages 14 and 15 for times and ability levels). You can join any group but as some have been going longer than others you may need time to catch up with old repertoire - as well as learning new tunes. SILVER ROCK SINGERS Mondays, 1.30-3pm This singing group looks at harmony arrangements of classic and contemporary rock songs. QUICKSILVER Fridays, 2-3.30pm Vocal performance group singing arrangements of classic pop songs, accompanied by a small band. SILVER SOUL Fridays, 3.30-5pm A choir singing popular soul repertoire from both sides of the Atlantic.

SILVERSMITHS Wednesdays, 11am-12.30pm This blues, jazz and gospel group covers a wide repertoire. No previous experience is necessary - just passion and enthusiasm. SILVER DIVAS Wednesdays, 1-2.30pm Everything from popular songs to Broadway classics with an emphasis on energy, enthusiasm and fun. Accompanied by piano. No experience necessary. SHADES OF SILVER Fridays, 11am-12.30pm Sing a mixed repertoire, including popular classical, pop, show tunes and more. Accompanied by piano. OPERA D’ARGENTO Wednesdays, 3-4.30pm The chance to work on pieces from operas and operettas from around the world. These fun and lively workshops are suitable for anyone who can follow a part.

SILVER BREVES Mondays, 11am-12.30pm A classical music singing group for those who would like to attempt more complicated and challenging sacred and secular work. Accompanied by piano. SILVER MADRIGALS Tuesdays, 11am-12.30pm Madrigals were written around the time of Queen Elizabeth I to be sung for fun in mixed voice parts. This unaccompanied small singing group is both fun and challenging; a subtle communication is developed among the singers to establish tempo and dynamics. This is not an auditioned group, but you would need to be experienced in part singing and able to follow written music.

Silver Singers Welcoming and sociable groups singing a wide-ranging mix of repertoire to suit any level. This is a good starting point if you’re not sure which singing style is for you. No experience necessary.

SILVER CHORUS Mondays, 1.30-3pm An auditioned choir with a mixed repertoire of show tunes, pop, folk, classical, world and gospel. There’ll be full 4-part singing with some solo work within choral arrangements. A mix of accompanied and a capella.

WIND INSTRUMENTS SILVER BEGINNER RECORDER Fridays, 2.30-4pm Get to grips with the recorder in this introductory group. Open to all abilities whether you can read music or not. Peer led. SILVER IMPROVER RECORDER Fridays,10.30am-12.30pm For players who are ready to move on from the beginner group. Peer led. SILVER RECORDER ENSEMBLE Thursdays, 3-4.30pm Learn a wide variety of repertoire from medieval dance music to The Beatles. Peer led.

SILVER RECORDER CONSORT Thursdays, 3-5pm An informal group of competent players who play mainly 5-8 part music written for early instruments. Music is provided and occasionally ordered from publishers, with members paying for their own copies. Peer led. SILVER WIND BAND Tuesdays, 11am-12.30pm Do you play a brass or woodwind instrument or have you played in the past? Join this ensemble and brush up on your skills. Some familiarity with the instrument required but no previous ensemble experience necessary. SILVER SAX Mondays, 3.30-4.45pm A new group aimed at those wishing to develop skills and gain experience of playing with others. Improve and develop your skills alongside an experienced tutor whilst covering a broad repertoire. Some experience of the saxophone is required.

Music Theory MUSIC THEORY Level 1 Tuesdays, 11am-12.30pm From 23 September 2014 An introduction to some of the basic elements of music theory to give you a good grounding whatever instrument you play. Covering such areas as naming notes on the stave, constructing major/ chromatic scales, understanding major/ chromatic intervals and creating basic diatonic triads. Basic rhythm reading will also be introduced. MUSIC THEORY Level 2 Tuesdays, 1-2.30pm From 13 January 2015 Following Music Theory Level 1 to consider diatonic 7th chords, analysing basic chord sequences, changing the key of a song, navigation chord charts and expanding upon rhythm reading. You will need to have completed the Music Theory Level 1 sessions before commencing the Music Theory Level 2 sessions.

Prices and Booking

If you’re enrolling for the first time or if you would like to update your details, please complete the form on page 17. Most groups are priced at £45 per term (£22.50 per half term). See page 14-15 for the prices of each group. Silver Singers (Stanley and Easington) pay per session at the venue. Once you’ve enrolled, you will need to retain your ticket and bring it along to your first session. Multibuy Discount If you book onto more than one session you will receive a discount of £5 (full term) or £2.50 (half term) for each subsequent session booked. For example: Full Term Half Term 1 session a week £45 £22.50 2 sessions a week £85 £42.50 3 sessions a week £125 £62.50 Discounted rates are only available on sessions which cost £45 per term or £22.50 per half term. Try and Buy / Refunds If you enrol for one of our activities and decide that it isn’t right for you, we will offer you a full refund as long as you let us know within your first three weeks of attending. No additional booking fees apply to Silver Programme workshop bookings. Ukuleles are available to borrow for the beginner ukulele sessions. For all other sessions please bring your own instruments.

Venues Sage Gateshead St Mary’s Square, Gateshead Quays, Gateshead, NE8 1RT Located on Gateshead Quays between the Tyne and Gateshead Millennium Bridges. The yellow Quaylink buses run every 10 minutes during the day and stop at Sage Gateshead. The Quaylink Service 1 (Q1) starts from both Newcastle Central Station and Gateshead Interchange. Approximately 10mins walk from Gateshead Interchange. Sage Gateshead has its own car park with lift access situated directly behind the building. There are a number of priority spaces for blue badge holders near the building entrances as well as in our car park by the lifts.

Gateshead Old Town Hall West Street, Gateshead, NE8 1HE Just a few minutes walk from Gateshead Interchange and Metro Station. Turn left out of the Metro or bus station and walk down West Street, the hall is on the right hand side with a car park opposite. There are parking spaces in the car parks at the front and the side of Gateshead Old Town Hall with Blue Badge parking spaces in both. There is also ample parking in the nearby Trinity Square car park. St Columba’s United Reformed Church 30 Northumberland Square, North Shields, NE30 1PW Many bus services stop at Northumberland Square. North Shields Metro Station is a short walk away. There are many metered parking spaces nearby and there is a multi-storey car park at the Beacon Centre.

St Hilda’s Church Market Place, South Shields, NE33 1BH Bus services from Sunderland, Cleadon, Whitburn, Jarrow, Gateshead and Newcastle all terminate at Market Place. From South Shields Metro Station turn left into King Street and follow the signs. There are a few parking spaces within the gates of the church and there are car parks in Wallis Street and Ferry Street.
