PETER SELLARS’ LAGRIME Honour your friendships But should you fall Face your shame and remorse And emerge stronger See and hear choral masterpiece ‘Lagrime di San Pietro’ (The Tears of St Peter) performed like never before…

Ground-breaking American director Peter Sellars has created a new, iconic production of a Renaissance masterpiece, Orlando di Lasso’s Lagrime de San Pietro (The Tears of St Peter). A visceral, enthralling performance - deploying the stellar singers of the LA Master Chorale to such dramatic, contemporary effect that you forget you are listening to music written more than 400 years ago. Beautifully designed and lit, this staging makes the most of the universal story of friendship, betrayal, and grief, packing a raw emotional punch. Written in the weeks before his death, the composer knew Lagrime would be his last work, and channelled all of his pain and remorse into a towering work of beauty. His final statement. Director Peter Sellars was so inspired by the power of the music that he decided to create a choral performance unlike any other. Twenty-one singers from Los Angeles Master Chorale - professional choir-in-residence at LA’s Walt Disney Concert Hall – bring all their technical excellence to a new vision of artistic daring, singing the entire, intricate 75-minute piece from memory, unaccompanied and thrillingly staged for our times. If you pick only one piece of contemporary performance to try this year, make it this one! Los Angeles Master Chorale perform Orlando di Lasso’s Lagrime di San Pietro (The Tears of St Peter) at Sage Gateshead on Saturday 25th May. Tickets start at £16.50 and buses are running specially from Hexham and Alnwick.

What’s On?

Kamasi Washington When Kamasi Washington released his 2015 tour de force LP The Epic, it instantly set him on a path as a generation’s torchbearer for progressive, improvisational music that would open the door for young audiences to experience music unlike anything they had heard before.

The 172-minute odyssey, which won numerous awards, including the inaugural American Music Prize and the Gilles Peterson Worldwide album of the year, was littered with elements of hip-hop, classical and R&B music, all major influences on the young saxophonist and bandleader, who exceeds any notions of what “jazz” music is. Kamasi followed that work with collaborations with other influential artists such as Kendrick Lamar, John Legend, Run the Jewels, Ibeyi and created Harmony of Difference, a standalone multimedia installation during the prestigious 2017 Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. The fulfilment of Kamasi’s destiny began when, aged 13, he picked up his musician father’s horn and proceeded to play the Wayne Shorter composition Sleeping Dancer

Sleep On despite never touching a saxophone or knowing how to play.

and later joined the orchestra of Gerald Wilson, one of his biggest heroes.

He was lead tenor saxophone chair in the top jazz ensemble at the Grammy Award-recognised Academy of Music and Performing Arts at Alexander Hamilton High School, and as a senior, started his first band, Young Jazz Giants, with pianist Cameron Graves, and siblings Thundercat and Ronald Bruner, Jr.

In June 2018, Washington released Heaven and Earth to wide praise. The album garnered ‘best of’ awards from Pitchfork, NPR, Variety, GQ, MOJO, and Complex among others.

Kamasi received a full scholarship to the University of California at Los Angeles. He recorded his first album with Young Jazz Giants during the summer following his freshman year. The quartet’s self-titled debut was dripping with maturity well beyond the players’ collective age. Following his sophomore year, he toured with West Coast hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg

Box office: 0191 443 4661

Kamasi’s 2019 is off to a great start with a BRIT Award nomination for Best International Male Artist and the Sundance Film Festival premiere of AS TOLD TO G/D THYSELF, a film inspired by Heaven and Earth, under his belt already. His mass appeal continues to grow, drawing vibrant, multiethnic and multi-generational crowds with tour stops at the world’s most prominent festivals such as Coachella, Glastonbury, Fuji Rock and Bonnaroo. Sam Sweeney The Unfinished Violin A veteran of the mighty Bellowhead, artistic director of the National Folk Youth Ensemble and founder member of the acclaimed instrumental trio Leveret, Sam Sweeney is a superb instrumentalist at the forefront of the revival in English traditional music. Inspired by his violin, carved but never finished by Richard Howard in 1915, Sam has created a live show and album of instrumental music inspired by the Great War. An expansion and development of his acclaimed live show Made in The Great War, The Unfinished Violin centres on a fiddle the 19-year-old Sam came across in violin maker Roger Claridge’s shop in Oxford, made but not assembled by one Richard S Howard of Harehills, Leeds, in 1915. Claridge had come by it at auction, in pieces, in an old manila envelope, put it together and put it on sale. It’s the instrument Sam

has used for numerous albums and countless gigs. In time he set about digging into its history, and uncovered the fateful tale of Richard Howard, a music hall performer called up in 1916 to the Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment to fight and lose his life in the Battle of Messines on 7th June 1917. Last summer, Sam visited the battlefield. “They had arranged a Richard Howard walk, and we visited loads of important sites connected with the Battle of Messines. There were about 100 people with us and we ended up at his grave. His granddaughter read a poem, I played the fiddle, and a bugle player played The Last Post.” The tune he played, from Howard’s regiment, was the beautifully mournful The Wellesley, which is also one of the outstanding 16 tracks on his debut solo album The Unfinished Violin, released in 2018.

Box office: 0191 443 4661

The Wellesley, with its swelling melodies and stately rhythm was the march Richard Howard himself would have heard as a recruit to the Duke of Wellington’s regiment. “Playing that over Richard Howard’s grave was incredibly emotional,” says Sam. “We were all just stood there, sobbing. He was unknown, no one knew anything about him, no one would ever have visited his grave, ever, and all of a sudden, there I was, playing his fiddle to him. And there’s going to be a march every year to his grave, and people are laying flowers there. It’s amazing.” Sam will perform The Unfinished Violin on Saturday 4 May at Sage Gateshead alongside Anglo Concertina player Rob Harbron, guitarist Jack Rutter and double bassist Ben Nicholls. At 6.45pm there will also be an informal pre-concert talk, free to ticket holders, where Sam will chat about the story behind the album, how he put it together and made the tunes come alive.

FOLK ON THE TYNE RETURNS FOR 2019

Folk on the Tyne, the annual festival which brings some of the best folk acts from around the world to the south bank of the Tyne, returns to Sage Gateshead on Saturday 27 July. The legendary singer-songwriter, political activist, orator, entertainer and rabble-rouser Billy Bragg will headline this year’s festival. Billy Bragg has been a fearless recording artist, tireless live performer and peerless political campaigner for over 35 years. The intervening decades have been marked by a number one hit single, having a street named after him, appearing onstage at Wembley Stadium, curating Leftfield at Glastonbury, sharing spotted dick with a Cabinet minister in the House of Commons cafeteria, being mentioned in Bob Dylan’s memoir and writing two non-fiction books. Among the former Saturday Boy’s albums are his punk-charged debut Life’s a Riot and pop classic Don’t Try This at Home.

Amy Leach, Folkworks Producer at Sage Gateshead said: “We are pleased to welcome Billy Bragg, an artist that uses the full power of folk music and song writing to tell vital and relevant stories, to headline Folk on the Tyne. We know that the audience will be excited to hear his music and what he has to say. “We have lots of other exciting acts to announce in the coming weeks, and we’re looking forward to hosting another fantastic festival that celebrates the breadth and depth of our fantastic folk scene.” Tickets for Billy Bragg are on sale now. Festival pre-sale access from Thursday 17 April, general sale from Friday 18 April, all available from www.sagegateshead.com

Folk on the Tyne is an experience for folk fans of all ages, bringing together established and new artists, both traditional and contemporary in style. The festival has previously welcomed The Young ‘Uns, The Unthanks, and The Wilsons, as well as a host of workshops and performances.

SUMMER SCHOOLS ARE BACK Folk musicians of all ages and abilities from across the region can sign up to Sage Gateshead’s popular Folkworks Summer Schools, which take place in Durham from 29 July to 3 August 2019.

The three summer schools cater for junior (9-13 year-olds), youth (14-20 year-olds) and adult (over 18) and bring together folk music enthusiasts and world renowned traditional musicians to play, sing and dance. This year’s tutors include Daoirí Farrell, Fay Hield, Ruth Ball, Lucy Farrell, Ian Stephenson, Katriona Gilmore, Jamie Roberts, Karen Tweed, Simon Thoumire, Lauren MacColl and Ilana Cravitz, with many more stars of the folk world still to be announced. Folkworks Summer Schools have been one of the longest-running and most popular folk music summer schools in the UK since they were established in 1989. The schools are fun and sociable with lots of sessions, sing-a-rounds, and dances. They boast world class tuition and an impressive alumnus. Many of the current tutors are musicians who themselves came to Summer School as participants

28

- and who now have established careers as performing and teaching musicians. Ian Stephenson, Director of the Youth Summer School, first attended Folkworks Summer Schools in 1998. He is now a successful musician known for his guitar and melodeon playing in folk bands such as Kan and Baltic Crossing, and he has been a regular tutor at the Summer Schools. “The schools are a great place for people to find kindred spirits and to have a brilliant sociable week with lots of likeminded people. You’re surrounded by incredible musicians and you all learn from each other... As a young musician my creativity was seriously accelerated and helped me shape my musical identity, ultimately leading me to a career in music. Going to the summer schools was one of the best choices I ever made.”

The schools are open to all and we are keen to encourage applicants from the widest range of backgrounds, ensuring that everybody has the chance to study with us. Financial support is available through grants and bursaries for those wishing to join the school who may not otherwise have the financial means. Keep social through music in Gateshead

Together with Age UK (Gateshead) and Gateshead Older People’s Assembly, we’re really excited to be able to launch a new project this spring, working with people over the age of 50 who want to find a way of keeping socially active and enjoy music.

The project, Well Tuned Gateshead, is being funded by a grant of £96,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund and aims to reduce loneliness and isolation in three wards of Gateshead, all of which have been identified as in the top seven per cent ‘at risk of loneliness’ wards in England by the Age UK Loneliness Heat Map 2018. Phil Davids, our Programme Leader, is thrilled by what the funding means for those in the North East region: “We hope to be able to work with around 90 people in six new community music groups on our doorstep in Deckham, Chopwell and Felling.

“We’re going to run taster sessions at the start of the project which will be followed by regular music sessions, offering the chance for people to learn an instrument or sing in a choir and to just try something fun and different. “We’ve already seen the positivity that can come from programmes like this, such as our existing Silver Programme, and so we’re delighted to have received funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, which will hopefully help to make a positive change to the lives of those in our community.”

Box office: 0191 443 4661

The first year of the project is free to participants. The second year, participants will be asked to make a small donation to help to continue the project beyond its initial time. Each community group will receive musical instruments as well as training, mentoring and resources to give older people the skills and confidence to continue to run the music groups themselves once the project has ended. Details of music sessions and events will be posted on our website soon.

Young musicians take to the stage Sage Gateshead’s CoMusica presents a day of free performances and activities by and for young people from across the region on Sunday 23 June.

More than 200 young people, including emerging musicians from CoMusica and partners such as Gem Arts, Jack Drum Arts, Generator and New Writing North, will take to the stage throughout the day, featuring urban to pop music, singers, songwriters, bands and much more. CoMusica works with children and young people up to the age of 25 who are experiencing challenging circumstances. In 2018, over 700 young people participated in DJing, singing, song writing, bands, rapping, beatboxing and spray painting as well as worked towards qualifications.

This is a celebration event for the young people involved with CoMusica, as well as being a fun day out for the whole family, with workshops for young people who want to join in.

“CoMusica is giving me the knowledge to pursue my career and hobby in music and staff here have also given me the knowledge to move further in life.”

Throughout the day, there will be a series of workshops for young people who want to join in. There will be a chance for young people interested in freestyle rapping to come and have a go in our Cypher Workshop plus there’s a Jam Workshop for those looking to try out a new instrument.

“I’ve been coming here since I was 15 years old. I’ve had some serious personal issues and the staff here have taken the time to talk to me about these problems and guide me through them. CoMusica is more about just the music to me, it’s about the hidden beauty of things.”
