ith all the hype surrounding golf equipment technology it seems very difficult to keep up with the Joneses! One bad shot and the driver is tossed and iron shafts are changed! Which reminds me of a time when I played a practise round with Ernie Els and after questioning him on my latest driver and whether the shaft was too stiff, he told me in no uncertain terms to “just bliksem the ball” and stop worrying about the shaft. Whether you are in search of golf ’s holy grail or resigned yourself to the fact that golf is not a game of “perfect”, I am sure that within the pages of this edition you will come across a product or service that will either help your game or just make your golfing experience that much more enjoyable. And yes “just bliksem it”

Part 1 of 3 in our new series on how the golf course superintendents get the courses ready for tournament play. Brought to you by Sue de Zwart who was golf course superintendent at Leopard Creek Country Club from 1997 to 2005. Sue has worked at four U.S. Masters and two U.S. Opens.
Planning is Imperative for a successful event: Hosting a tournament is an absolute privilege for any golf course superintendent. It is a fantastic opportunity to strive for perfection & produce the highest quality playing surface for some of the best players in the world.
6 Months Prior to the Event: 1. 3. Bunkers – work through all your bunkers ensuring your edging is as close to the original design as possible, sand levels are 100 – 150 mm throughout the base of the bunker. Once you have worked through all the bunkers you should look at the bunkers hole by hole & ensure that the colour is uniform for TV coverage. If you need to cap the bunkers this should be done by 3 months prior to the event. 4. Mowing patterns – these should be adjusted by 3 months prior to the event at the latest. Remember most TV cameras will point green to tee so you need to look at each hole from green to tee when setting up the mowing patterns. It is good to involve your golf director to assist you with the landing areas for the pros to ensure you are narrowing the fairways in the correct areas. Email photos of any areas of concern to the tournament director. Walkways should be mowed prior to letting the rough grow up. The easiest way to mark these is to mow them yourself the first time.

5. Set your goals on your cutting heights: An intermediate cut is typically 25 mm high & this is often used to mow one line around the fairways & often around bunkers to include them in the short cut, remember to use this cut to your advantage to highlight the fairway. The rough cut could be anywhere between 50 & 100 mm depending on your climate, grass type, irrigation & whether you are using plant growth regulators like Primo Maxx or not. It is good to grow the rough up slowly at least a month prior to the event to ensure good coverage. Remember this dense canopy will be exceptionally humid so watch for disease particularly in summer. This is the one time I would suggest a preventative fungicide in the rough. One can also boost the rough with biological control in the months leading up to an event. March/April 2011

Sport & Protection from the Sun In our last edition we looked at sunscreen, here we look at protecting your eyes from the harsh rays of the sun. Alice Victor CANSA
Protect your Eyes from the Sun
S
kin cancer often occurs on the eyelid or adjacent area of the eye. It occurs most often on the lower eyelid, but may be found anywhere on the eyelid margins, corners of the eye, eyebrow skin or adjacent areas of the face. Ultraviolet Rays are rays that reach the earth from the sun that are too high in frequency for the human eye to see. The only way to protect your eyes is to stay in the shade or by using sunglasses with good quality lenses: UV400 or higher. Technical information: The reason Ultraviolet rays are not visible is that the human eye can only see between 400 Nanometers and around 800 Nanometers. Nanometers (Nm) are the unit of measurement for light rays. The different rays are interpreted by our eyes as different colours. Blue, for example is a high frequency light wave (400-450Nm) and Red is a very low frequency light wave (around 750Nm). Once again we are dealing with the different types of UV rays: • UVC - Between 0 - 250 Nm - these rays are very harmful, but fortunately it is almost entirely blocked out by the earths atmosphere. • UVB - between 250-360 Nm - This is the one to worry about the most! They are the most harmful rays and are responsible for most damage done to human eyes. 8
These ultraviolet rays pass right through the earth's atmosphere and bore directly into the deep internal workings of the human eye. • UVA - between 260 - 400 Nm - less harmful than UVB, but also needs to be considered for eye protection. These rays can only be blocked out by lenses that block out all light to 400 Nanometers (called UV 400 lenses). Warnings During the summer months it would not only be advisable to wear UV 400 sunglasses, but also to take note of the size and shape of the lenses in your sunglasses. The lens must not be too small as you will need as much protection as possible, therefore, obtain sunglasses that have lenses that cover the entire eye area and if possible sunglasses that wrap around on the sides. These wrap-sunglasses are definitely advisable for skiing and boating where UV reflects off the surface of the snow and water and penetrates the eye from the side area. Remember, that all UV radiation that reaches the earth's surface can reflect from glass, grass, snow, cement, water, etc. and therefore can also cause damage to the eyes, even though you are not positioned in direct sunlight. Eyes and UV radiation Just as the skin can get sunburnt by overexposure to UV radiation, so can the eye. The most delicate

areas are the cornea and the retina - the sensitive seeing part of the eye. The symptom in this instance is red, swollen and sore eyes. This irritation can also cause a swelling of the conjunctiva. Sunburn of the eyes can lead to conjunctivitis or lesions of the retina, resulting sometimes in temporary or permanent vision deterioration. Generally sore eyes improve in 48 hours as the burnt surface of the eye regenerates. Do not look directly into the sun. This can result in damage to the accurately discriminating part of the eye, and accurate vision can be lost. Cataracts are attributed to overexposure to UV radiation. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world. Proteins in the eye's lens unravel, tangle and accumulate pigments that cloud the lens and eventually lead to blindness. Even though cataracts appear to different degrees in most individuals as they age, sun exposure, in particular exposure to UVB, appears to be a major risk for cataract development. Eyelids Skin cancer often occurs on the eyelid or adjacent area of the eye. It occurs most often on the lower eyelid, but may be found anywhere on the eyelid margins, corners of the eye, eyebrow skin or adjacent areas of the face. Usually it appears as painless elevations or nodules. The eyelashes may be distorted or missing. There may be ulcerations of the involved area, along with bleeding, crusting, and/or distortion of the normal skin structure. Such occurrences need to be evaluated and may require a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis of skin cancer. • Remember, that not all variations of growths on the skin is skin cancer. • But, a medical practitioner/doctor/dermatologist should be consulted to evaluate the growth or suspicious area. • Early detection can save lives, therefore it is advisable to get professional advise in the early stages of any change on the skin, eyes or body. Treatment • A biopsy of the area is essential to ascertain the condition of the growth. Thereafter the doctor will recommend what needs to be done and/or refer you to the specialist in this field. A plasticor reconstructive surgeon, who specializes in diseases and conditions affecting the eyelids, treats most eyelid-related cancers. March/April 2011

WINNING LETTER Dear Ed, It is with a slight disillusionment toward the “Beautiful Game” that I write this letter. Since the demise of former number 1 golfer Tiger Woods the game has become quite boring. I feel that the treatment this man has received, not only from his fans, but also from his opponents has been pretty lame. Pro-golfers and fans quickly forget that he single handily elevated the level of pro-golf from a sport of semi-fit and laid-back golfers to a sport where mostly golfing athletes will excel, and has forced a change where if you want to win at the highest
level you have to drop your 500gr burger and opt for a good workout at the local gym. As much as I have loved to hate this sporting icon, I have grown to love him. He has put the game of golf at its highest level, not forgetting that players and tournaments are now getting huge sponsorship and prize money thanks to him. I think he should now chill out go find some babes or get a girlie magazine and get back to his winning ways. Thanks Tiger Nuno
Dear Nuno I have always known the term “the beautiful game” as a synonym for soccer. I suppose that you could call golf the beautiful game however most people I know use terms such as frustrating and difficult. It is for these reasons that I would rather say “the rewarding game” for when you do get it right it is hugely rewarding. Yes Tiger has done a lot for golf and has at times been harshly treated but to say that he single handily transformed the game and that the game has become boring since his woes began would be untrue. Gary Player pioneered the idea that golfers should be fit; his training regimes were and still to this day remain legendary and young stars such as Ryo Ishikawa, Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy, Matteo Manassero and Martin Kaymer offer flair and excitement seldom seen in any sporting code. It will be great to see Tiger return but the game is always bigger than the individual and that is what makes it beautiful. Enjoy your prize and thanks for the letter. Regards
Congratulations to Nuno - you have won a PGA voucher worth R500! March/April 2011

W
ell after spending some time visiting the area and chatting to the locals it seems that the answer is simple. The area with its moderate climate (rated 2nd best in the world) and fascinating history (Bartolomeu Dias and his crew were the first Europeans to land on South African soil and as local archaeological deposits have revealed Mossel Bay’s human history can be traced back more than 164,000 years) is the ideal place to not only play golf but to live and enjoy life in general. This is a genuine, home grown, South African Coastal town. There is a “No Hurries, No Worries” frame of mind that is present, however the standard of the golf courses, restaurants, accommodation and service in general is excellent. 18

In my opinion they have got the balance right here and after chatting to Lee-Anne this seems to be further reinforced as she comes across as determined and professional yet down to earth, a young lady who is just as happy fishing or learning to surf as playing against the best woman golfers in the world. Ideally situated half an hour from George and ninety minutes from Knysna there is no shortage of superb golf courses in the area. It is only a matter of time before more champions start emerging from Mossel Bay (see page 22).

ou could be forgiven for asking what they feed ‘em in Mossel Bay. Not content with giving us 2010 British Open winner Louis Oosthuizen, 2010 European champion Lee-Anne Pace, and 2009 Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open winner Bertus Smit, Mossel Bay Golf Club this week announced the arrival of two very young champions: 9-year old Martin Vorster, and 8-year old Jordan Duminy. “They played the SA Kids Golf US Qualifier at Bronkhorstspruit on the 22nd and 23rd of January, and Martin won the 9-year old’s division by 11 shots, while Jordan came second in the 8-year olds,” said Mossel Bay Golf Club CEO, Bertu Nel. Both boys will now represent South Africa and the Mossel Bay Golf Club in the European Kids Championship in Scotland in June, and in the World Champs in the USA in August. Mr. Nel said that the boys posted exceptional performances. “Martin played 18 holes on the Saturday and 18 on the Sunday, and carded 75 and 77, while Jordan, whose division only plays 9 holes, scored 38 and 40.”
“I believe that this achievement will motivate Martin to play and practice golf even more. He has an incredible love and talent for golf and I believe that playing in Scotland and America will give him a huge boost.”Jordan’s father, Hilton Duminy, said, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mossel Bay Golf Club for their leniency and kindness towards junior golfers and thanks for going the extra mile allowing them to participate in most of the club events. “It will be highly appreciated if Mossel Bay Golf Club could assist to make this dream for these kids to participate in these international events a reality.” Mr. Nel said that the Louis Oosthuizen Junior Golfing Academy has already pledged R 5,000 each towards the boy’s trips.
The boys play regularly in the Mossel Bay Golf Club’s development programme, and receive training from Craig Lewthwaite, who teaches at the Club’s Junior Academy. “They haven’t qualified for the Louis Oosthuizen Junior Academy yet, but basically they receive the same coaching.” Mr. Nel said that the club will now help the boys’ families raise the funds they’ll need for their trips. “I’d appreciate any help or sponsorship we can get,” said Martin’s father, Waldo Vorster.
“Proud Mossel Bay exists to honour any local citizen who’s excelled in his or her chosen field - but we never thought we’d be honouring boys of such a young age. “Proud Mossel Bay is really proud of Martin and Jordan.”
22
“We’re appealing to members, and local businesses to come forward and help,” he said. Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm said that the Proud Mossel Bay campaign saluted Martin Vorster and Jordan Duminy.

Stay in Mossel Bay when you play the Garden Route There’s a very good reason why Mossel Bay Tourism uses the slogan ‘Mossel Bay. Do stuff ’ - and it’s this: the town offers an unequalled number of things to do...Which might surprise first-time visitors. “Look beyond the holiday houses and there’s much more to the town than you might have thought,” said Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm, who believes that Mossel Bay is the ideal base from which to explore the Garden Route and Klein Karoo. She said that it’s possible to play at least ten superb courses whilst staying in Mossel Bay. “We’re half an hour from George, and 90 minutes from Knysna - so you can choose from our local courses (Mossel Bay and Pinnacle Point), or Fancourt (which has 3 courses), George, Kingswood, Oubaai, Knysna, Pezula, or Simola. “And, if you’ll excuse the pun, getting there’s a beautiful drive - no matter where you go in the Garden Route.” Off the course, she said, Mossel Bay’s numerous attractions and activities are gathering ever more attention. “One travel magazine recently ran a cover article which called us ‘The Adventure Capital of the Garden Route.’ 24
“Adrenalin activities like shark cage diving and sky diving, mountain biking, horse riding, kayaking, 4x4 routes, sand boarding, angling, sailing, and surfing have really taken off in Mossel Bay in the last few years, but there’s plenty to do for everyone - and this should make it even more attractive for golfers, because it makes it a pleasure to bring nonplaying members of the family on your golfing break-aways,” said Ms. Holm. Mossel Bay is uniquely positioned relative to the Outeniqua Mountains and the ocean currents that pass the southern coast of South Africa - which has resulted in a mild, dryish climate, with more than 320 days of sunshine per annum. “Naturally, with the sea, the beaches, and the mountains on our doorsteps, this means that many of the attractions in Mossel Bay are focused on the outdoors - but, perhaps more importantly for golfers, it means that you can expect good playing conditions throughout the year. “Add all of this to the fact that Mossel Bay’s the one place on the coast where there’s waterfront accommodation for everyone - no matter what your budget may be - and it becomes more and more attractive as a golfing destination,” said Ms. Holm.

o trip to Mossel Bay would be complete without sampling some wonderful wild oysters. After a round at Mossel Bay Golf Club my advice would be to head down to the harbour to the Sea Gypsey restaurant where you can enjoy a plate of oysters whilst gazing across the bay. Wild oysters are excellent sources of several minerals, including iron, zinc and selenium, which are often low in the modern diet. They are also an excellent source of Vitamin B12. Hein Eksteen who dives for wild oysters in Mossel Bay gave us this interesting information: The wild oyster’s biological name is (striostrea margaritacea). These oysters are different in taste because they grow where nature has planted them. After working with these animals for more than 20 years I know that it is their habitat which plays a role in triggering the taste buds of the connoisseur. The habitat starts on the shore till sea depths of about 20 meters. The oysters decide whether they are male or female and then they sporn. The microscopic spat then travels along the coast, where not to long thereafter it finds a crevice, cave, gully, pothole or rock formation where it attaches itself. They grow into a size of about 120 grams in less than 2 years but we frequently harvest some of them over 1kg. The biggest ever harvested was 2.318 kg, in Vlees Bay. An oyster over 1kg takes about 8 years to grow. The oyster gets protected by nature from overharvesting by means of sand covering the reefs where they grow layers of up to 12 meters and then they still grow under that sand. Redbait also grows on the reefs and the oyster grows

beneath it. When the cycle is finished the redbait disintegrates and “wallah” there they sit again ready to be picked. The habitat creates the taste of the oyster because it feeds on microscopic plankton. This makes the oyster 100% organic. Sea temperatures (in Mossel Bay it’s about in 14 degrees in winter and 22 degrees in summer) effects the taste of the oyster. Rough seas is also a big factor, then we can’t get in to harvest. We as pickers are also restricted by government and can only enter with wet gear and boots. No hookah or compressed air is allowed. After the oyster has been harvested the company keeps them in tubs with seawater that gets pumped from the ocean. This water runs through the oyster until it gets ordered. They then get packed in poly boxes with their lids facing upwards. They can easily live another 7 days in the box without seawater but then they must not be exposed to sunlight or wind. Mossel Bay’s wild oysters are best enjoyed with one or two drops of Tabasco, fresh lemon, course sea salt and ground pepper. Sauvignon Blanc can also be served, well chilled.

Proud Mossel Bay Salutes Louis Oosthuizen and Lee-Anne Pace “I don’t think many people realise how much Lee-Anne – who achieved her position after winning the Ladies European Tour’s Henderson Money List (the old Order of Merit) in Dubai last year – has done for Mossel Bay and the Mossel Bay Golf Club,” said the Club’s CEO, Bertu Nel. “Between her and Louis Oosthuizen, we owe them a huge debt of gratitude. “I couldn’t even begin to tell you how many articles and broadcasts have mentioned Mossel Bay over the last year because they’ve featured Louis and Lee-Anne.” Ms. Pace’s five tournament victories in the five months from June to October 2010 set her on course for her title – but her entire career has been no less remarkable. “She began by caddying for her dad (Francois) and playing with some of the boys at Wellington, where we used to live,” said her mother, Sandra.
March/April 2011
“But within about three or four months one of the local coaches noticed her, and in another three months she was playing for Boland. “That was in her matric year, and in the following year she gained her junior and then her Springbok colours.” The Pace family moved to Mossel Bay in 2001, although Lee-Anne was then working – and playing golf – in Durban. “She decided on her own to apply for an athletic scholarship to the University of Murray State, in Kentucky, and she started studying in 2003,” said Continued on page 31 Ms. Pace, Sr.

There she won seven intercollegiate events and the University’s Player of the Year award before transferring to the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma, on a full athletic scholarship in 2004. She graduated with a BA in Science (with a major in psychology and a minor in coaching), and won the Western Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year award in 2005. Lee-Anne Pace has represented South Africa at the World Amateur Championship in Puerto Rico, at the Commonwealth Games in New Zealand, at the World Amateur Championship in Malaysia, at the Belgian International Championship, and at the British, Wales and Ireland Games. She was named Player of the Year by both Complete Golfer and Golf Digest in 2009. “Everyone asks where she gets her perseverance from,” said her mother. “I think it’s from that last year of her studies when she was also playing on the Futures Tour. “She very often had to sit with her books on the plane and work while she was travelling.” Mr. Nel said that the Mossel Bay Golf Club had seen a definite increase in demand in the period since Ms. Pace’s European Tour win.
March/April 2011
“Our figures are up on last year, and in this economy, that says everything,” he said. He noted that while most of the additional demand came from South Africans, the course had hosted a significant increase in foreign players over the last week: “And they all ask about Lee-Anne and Louis. They all want to see their photos on the wall. “Some Swedish players were even lucky enough to recognise Louis on the first tee during a practice round earlier this year, and to have their pictures taken with him.” Mr. Nel said that the club would be publishing personalised Lee-Anne Pace and Louis Oosthuizen score cards later this year, “And we think they’ll become real collector’s items.” Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm congratulated Ms. Pace, and thanked her for the work she’d done to market the town. “We realise that she doesn’t get to spend a lot of time here, but the fact that she comes from Mossel Bay, and calls it home, has done amazing things for the town. “No estimate could really do justice to the value of the marketing she does simply by being an ambassador for Mossel Bay,” she said.

World Rankings - deep stuff! I don’t pretend to be either fan or fundi of the Official World Golf Rankings. Except for a brief period when it was almost cool, I hated maths at school. o I have no major quibble discussing shortcomings of the system, and even dissing it when it seems to do bizarre things. Heck, I’m even prepared to be parochial in my criticism of it if I think one of the Sunshine Tour players is being hard done by. But it is what we have, and, despite the shortcomings, by and large it presents a pretty accurate reflection of what’s what – and who’s who – in golf in any given week.
The story quotes Aaron Oberholser – he was ranked as high as 25th in 2007, but was last seen at 682nd in 2009, admittedly as a result of injury – and he makes points that are initially pretty uncontroversial. But then comes the section that made my blood boil: “You know how deep your own Tour is, especially the guys who play on both sides of the pond. The European Tour is nowhere as deep (as the PGA Tour). The top 15 are just as good as our top 15, that’s proven every other year at the Ryder Cup. But in my opinion the European Tour gets weaker substantially after that.”
Even when Tiger held on to the top spot by the skin of his teeth during a year of inactivity and poor performances (on the golf course too), it made sense to see him rewarded for his extraordinar- It beggars belief that – even hidden behind “in my opinion” – ily lengthy dominance. And when Lee Westwood got to someone is so damn cocksure of number one without so much as a himself in that regard, with so very handshake with a major trophy in little reason. I took a little look at 2010, it still made sense, especially number 16 on each list (and exafter I saw him playing at the Ned- cluded South Africans bank Golf Challenge. It was number one golf, no question. But I get a little exercised when someone takes on the system in pursuit of some agenda which seeks to privilege one tour over another – and you probably know exactly what I mean. and Australians who might mess up an otherwise acceptable statistical exercise) and thought that Scotland’s Martin Laird and American Sean O’Hair stacked up pretty evenly. I looked deeper too: Soren Kjeldsen and Brandt Snedeker are also pretty much of a muchness at 30th spot. And, to finally get to my point: I, unlike Oberholser, am prepared to concede that the match is pretty even further down the rankings. Perhaps more importantly, I’m not prepared to suggest – on the strength of lack of knowledge – that one tour is much stronger than the other. But Europe is looking awfully strong right now! by Mike Green

AN INSIGHT INTO GOLF TRAVEL Brought to us by KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice this report is based on a global survey among golf tour operators, performed during the summer of 2010.
Introduction Following the first edition of the Golf Travel Insights report in 2008, the world has experienced a major economic downturn, and, similarly to other industries, golf tourism has also been hit hard. This second edition is prepared with the aim to find out about recent trends in golf tourism, how customer needs and preferences have changed and what is expected in the years to come. Over 120 golf tour operators from 41 countries have participated in the survey. About half of the responses were received from European golf tour operators, 18% from Asia and 22% from those located in the Americas, with the remainder being Africa-based or from Australia and New Zealand. For the purposes of this study a golf trip is defined as a leisure trip taken within a country or crossborder, which includes at least one overnight stay and when the traveler’s main motivation is to play golf. Peter Walton, chief executive of the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO), provides an overview of the recent trends in the global golf tourism industry. IAGTO, the global trade organisation of the golf tourism industry has 1450 member companies in 81 countries including 350 golf tour operators in 50 countries. 40

Recent trends in golf tourism Mainly due to the economic recession of the past 18 months, 38% of the surveyed golf tour operators have experienced a fall in demand (up from 10% in the summer of 2008). While 8% of them found demand to be stable, 54% still noticed an increase in the number of golf tourists (albeit down from 73% in 2008). Although the average length of stay remained more or less the same, several operators noted that golfers travel less frequently, i.e. those who used to go on 2-3 golf trips a year now only go on one. More than 40% of the survey participants also noted a decrease in the average expenditure during a golf holiday. While golfers have become more cost conscious, this finding can also be explained by the discounted rates and packages available on the market. In certain key markets, currency exchange rates have significantly influenced demand patterns. For example, the devaluation of British pound to the euro has resulted in a drop of outbound tourism while local operators experienced a pickup in demand for domestic golf travel packages. According to IAGTO, a significant proportion of regular golfers, usually somewhere between 25-30%, frequently take vacations where they play golf. This is fairly constant from one country to another and has changed little over the past decade or so. Therefore the strength of an outbound market at any given moment is heavily dependent on the participation levels, the country’s economy and currency exchange rates. The major European markets of the UK, Sweden and Germany remain very strong, but the fastest growing markets include Switzerland, Austria, Denmark and the Czech Republic, where golf populations are relatively small, but growth rates are high. Maximising market mix is an essential task for all destinations and resorts in order to provide buffers against variations in the performances of individual markets. Approximately 70% of golfers like to find new places to play golf on vacation. This is great news for emerging destinations but a challenge for those more established. New courses in established destinations solve this problem as golfers can return to their favourite locations but also enjoy new golf experiences. After a very wet, cold and prolonged winter, golfers are going to be looking for guaranteed sunshine in 2010/11. Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Dubai, Abu Dhabi together with localised regions like Murcia and the Canary Islands will all be competing strongly with the established short haul destinations of AndalucĂa, the Algarve and Belek. Ireland, Scotland and France should all perform much better in 2011 whilst Italy, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and even Sweden will be vying to attract golfers away from the more traditional summer golf destinations. Today’s typical golf tourist Based on our survey findings, the average golf tourist typically spends 3-4 days or a week on a shorthaul, and 7, 10 or 14 days on a long haul golf holiday. In regard to playing activities, a golf tourist generally plays 4-6 rounds of golf on 3-5 different courses on a oneweek golf holiday. While the price of a 7-day golf package (including flights, accommodation and golf ) can be as low as EUR 400-500, luxury trips can cost as much as EUR 5,000. According to our survey participants, the greater proportion of golf tourists chose golf packages in the range of EUR 1,000-1,500. Regarding additional expenditures, a typical golf tourist spends EUR 150-200 a day on average. Tour operators were requested to weigh on a 5-point scale the importance of various factors for a golf tourist when choosing a golf destination. While golf tourists care most about the quality of the golf courses at a destination, they are becoming more price-sensitive. Accessibility remains a key factor, and particularly the availability of direct flights to a golf destination plays an important role.

Expected future trends for golf travel While 80% of all surveyed tour operators expect a clear upswing following the economic crisis, onefifth of them foresee stagnation or a gradual decrease (depending on the region in which they operate). Spain and Portugal are still expected to dominate the golf travel market, whereas traditional golf destinations in the UK & Ireland and in the US are also foreseen to be among the hot spots in the upcoming years. According to many, Turkey is one of the fastest emerging destinations offering great value for money. Numerous survey participants expect impressive growth for golf tourism in Southeast Asia (i.e. Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia).
Conclusion Whether as a primary motivation for a holiday or simply as a secondary activity, golf attracts millions of holidaymakers worldwide. Golf tourism is an important revenue generator not only for golf facilities, but for all the associated service providers in a destination. Golf tourists are generally big spenders and are looking for quality services, while expecting great value for money. In today’s competitive environment, it is crucial to understand the needs and behaviors of golf tourists to develop a successful golf destination. Our survey shows that an ideal destination would offer a minimum of 4-5 quality, easily accessed golf courses clustered at a location, at reasonable prices, and providing high quality accommodation facilities. While Spain and Portugal remain the most popular destinations, followed by traditional golf markets of the UK, Ireland and the US, emerging destinations in the South-east Mediterranean and Southeast Asia can become a success story if they follow a conscious and well planned development strategy.

GOLFING DESTINATIONS - GAUTENG
NEWS CLIP
Europe tweaks qualifying format for Ryder Cup Europe is changing its Ryder Cup qualifying process to strengthen its team through the world ranking and reducing the captain's picks to two players. The change announced last month means the top five players to make the 2012 team will come from the European Points list, which is money earned in the 12 months before the matches. The next five players would come from the World Points list, which is world ranking points accumulated during the same time. Previously, the top four came from world ranking and the next five from European Tour money. Had this change been in place last year, Padraig Harrington and Justin Rose would have earned spots on the team, while Peter Hanson and Miguel Angel Jimenez would not have qualified. 52

aansienlike hoeveelhede besproeiings water verlore raak deur verdamping.
Danie Kok Baanopsigter: Prince’s Grant Coastal Golf Estate
March/April 2011

Local boy Harvey grinds his way to SA Stroke Play win Almost from the time he first hit shots as a three-year-old with father George on the fairways at Mount Edgecombe, Jared Harvey has been a grinder.

no frills, no entourage guy, Harvey believed that good old fashioned hard work and an unflappable self belief would finally take him to the winner’s circle.
pretty golf. But at the end it things finally went my way, so I guess there is something to say for hard work.”
Harvey’s workmanlike route around the No 1 course was indeed littered with birdies and bogeys So it came as no surprise to the 22-year-old when from start to finish. he messed up a chance to win the South African One behind at the start of the round, Harvey Amateur Stroke Play outright and had to grind it caught up to Law at the fourth but two poor pitch out in overtime against Scotland’s David Law to shots led to back-to-back bogeys at the fifth and roll in the winning putt and lift the trophy last sixth. To shots back, Law bogeyed the seventh and month. Harvey holed a bunker shot to close the gap to one. “My card looked like a colouring book,” joked “I finally got my nose in front when I birdied the Harvey. “Six birdies, five bogeys, definitely not 14th and he dropped at the 15th,” said Harvey, who made a solid par at the 16th to stay ahead but nearly lost the advantage again at 17. “I drove the greenside bunker and Dave pulled off an incredible shot from the fairway bunker,” he said. “He had eight feet for birdie, so I knew I had to up and down. I had to keep the lead going down 18, because that hole has been my Achilles Heel all week.” Job done, Harvey held a one-shot lead at 15 under par, but he wasted the chance to win it outright when his nerves got in the way. After a reasonable drive up the right, his approach finished just short of the green and he skimmed his approach putt straight through the green, 30ft past the pin. A two-putt bogey left the door wide open for Law, forced the play-off with a tidy par for a round of 72. “No doubt about it, the pressure got to me,” Harvey admitted, smiling. “Not once this week had I played the 18th well. I think it was in the back of my mind and I was telling myself I can’t play the hole. 64

“In the play-off, I suddenly just relaxed about the whole thing. I was going to go with driver, because the wind was so fierce, but when Dave hit it into the trees on the left, I realised he was in a tough spot and I just needed to par.” Harvey got to the green in two while Law, under pressure to go for the green, put his approach into the water guarding the front of the green. His fourth shot flew the green, his putt ran through the green and when his ball finally dropped, he had seven shots on his card. “I felt sorry for him because he has been a solid competitor all week and to go out that way, must have been hard to imagine,” said Harvey, who rolled his first putt to within an inch of the cup and tidied up for par, and the title, under thunderous applause from the large home crowd. And there was an ironic footnote to his victory. “I guess the term “like father, like son” is really appropriate now,” said the 22-year-old. George Harvey won the same title twice. He beat Andries Oosthuizen in a play-off in 1973 and followed the same route against Peter Todt, to clinch the title in 1976. “This is an unbelievably special moment for me, to follow in my father’s footsteps like this,” he said. “I'm proud of the way I hung in there, especially with the wind up. I was pretty anxious and nervous and I had a lot of emotions going. To finally get the job done is a great feeling. “I'm kind of lost for words. It's still pretty unbelievable.” Ryan Dreyer carded a final round 71 to finish two shots behind the duelling leaders, while France’s Clement Sordet snuck into fourth on 11-under-par 277 with his final round 71. Sustainable golf
S
ustainability is arguably one of the most important factors for developers to consider when creating golf developments and communities of the future. As Jonathan Smith of the Golf Environment Organization says “in its simplest form, sustainable golf development is golf development that can endure. It is determined by golf ’s own ability to continually multiply net gains to shareholders, stakeholders and the environment, and is directly influenced by wider social, economic and environmental processes.” But what do golf developments need to do to maximize ecosystem value, minimize waste and optimize benefits to people and business? Some experts share their opinions: Annika Sorenstam:"I am very passionate about course design and look forward to growing that area of our business. Already, I have been fortunate to work alongside a highly experienced team. As we approach a new design or redesign we look to capture the natural character of the site and landscape. It's very important to preserve the environment, spirit, and traditions of the game. “A major focus for us is water, which is such a valuable resource. We want our golf courses to help clean the water and minimize its consumption by recycling and reusing the water as much as possible. “I believe that golf courses are great natural environments for people and wildlife. Lodewijk Klootwijk - Director, European Golf Course Owners Association: "The sustainable development and management of golf courses is essential for both the image of golf and practically the role of golf in society. For the growth, and therefore the future of golf, this is one of golf ’s most important initiatives. March/April 2011

out of the deep rough! Often a slightly errant drive can end up nestled in thick rough. This sometimes makes it impossible to reach the green in regulation. A common mistake that most amateurs make is that they try to lift the ball out of the nestled lie with too long a golf club. In the picture above you can see that I have driven the ball into the rough with still some distance to the green, 195 metres to be exact. This would normally be a 5 iron distance for me from the fairway, but this longer club would create too shallow an entry into the ball. In thicker rough this will cause you to make contact with too much grass before striking the ball.
76
www.sagolftrader.co.za
March/April 2011
TUITION & INSTRUCTION
Firstly pick a club with more loft and a sharper leading edge such as a 7 iron. A good strike will lead to more distance as the grass between the ball and club will reduce spin and make the ball travel farther thus ending up the same distance as a five iron. Next step in ensuring you get a steeper entry into the ball is to grip the club shorter. Seen in this picture above I have gripped the club about 1 – 2 inches shorter than normal. This will force you to make a steeper descending blow.
In the pictures left you can see a normal stance and a stance where I have moved the ball position way back in line with my right foot (right handed golfers). Having the ball position way back in the stance will also aide the steeper angle of attack. This will help in contacting the ball first. Now when taking the club back you want to create as steep of an arc as you can and to do this you hinge your wrists as early as you can on your backswing. This will again allow you to create a steeper angle through the impact zone. And the final step in your escape from the rough is probably the most important. You must get onto your left side after impact and by that I mean a total transfer of weight through the golf ball. Many amateurs do the opposite and keep their weight on the right side and try lift the ball up with there hands. This will lead to poor strike and may still leave you imprisoned in the rough. The ball should come out lower than normal due to the steepness of entry, so play for that and don t be too greedy. Follow these steps to ensure that you get back in play and by doing so avoiding the big numbers that destroy scorecards. But the best solution would always be to avoid this part of the course to begin with! Good luck with this tip, and if you feel you need more help is mastering this area of the game, please consult with your local PGA Professional.

E

Meeste mense wat betrokke is by gholf is heel ernstig. Hoekom moet ek vra?

Nee – Nee! begin julle self weer geniet as julle iets fantasties doen, wees bly, wys dit. BODY ALIGNMENT! Stephan Erasmus – Elite Coach Tuks Golf Academy
This is the second in a series of six tips brought to you by Tuks Golf Academy. In the previous edition we dealt with the grip, here we focus on alignment. Future editions will focus on stance, ball position, posture and in-swing basics. In this month’s tip we will be covering another very important fundamental...BODY ALIGNMENT! Body alignment is so important because if you are not aligned to your target, it will be nearly impossible to hit the ball to your target!
82
www.sagolftrader.co.za
March/April 2011
KIDS STUFF
The most common fault with body alignment is that the upper body- your arms and shoulders, and your lower bodyyour feet and knees do not align in the same direction but crisscross. More often than not, this occurs when the feet and knees align to the right of the target and the arms and shoulders align left of the target.
The way to fix this is by getting your upper body- arms and shoulders, as well as your lower body- feet and knees and aligned parallel to your Ball-Target Line. You Ball-Target Line is the imaginary line created between your golf ball and your target.
As you can see, when you align your body parallel to your BallTarget Line you create imaginary lines that look like a Railway Track!
Good luck working on your Body Alignment this month! We’ll be back with another tip in the next issue!

He's a liar ! Sid and Barney head out for a quick round of gol f. Since they are short on time, they dec ide to play only 9 holes. Sid says to Barney, "Let's say we make the time worth the while, at least for one of us, and spot $5 on the lowest score for the day ." Barney agrees and they enjoy a gre at game. After the 8th hol e, Barney is ahead by 1 stroke, but cuts his ball into the rough on the 9th. "Help me find my ball; you look over there," he says to Sid. After 5 minutes, neither has had any luck, and sin ce a lost ball carries a four-point penalty , Barney pulls a ball from his pocket and tosses it to the ground . "I've found my ball!" he announces triumphantly.
