Dear Ed

I have just finished watching the LIV Golf Adelaide event and I have to say it was riveting and loads of fun to watch. The field had 13 Major winners in it and play was enthusiastically cheered on by packed galleries whilst even a lack of local success did not dull the festival atmosphere at The Grange Golf Club.

Some purists may have been turned off by the walk-on songs being played while players took their swings and then it raining beer on the par-three party hole, but I am sure that this was exactly what Greg Norman had dreamed of.

I can only see more and more golf fans becoming attracted to these types of events.

Dear Sheryl

Yes, LIV Golf certainly came alive in Adelaide.

LIV offers an alternative; it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it does have a market. The constant squabbling between the tours needs to stop and egos need to be put aside, the sooner they work out a way to accommodate the LIV Golfers into the World Rankings the better in my opinion.

Strength to all the tours, strength to golf!

Part 5 - Putters… Choosing the right putter! (5/6)

Improve your golf game

For many golfers, half the game of golf is fun and the other half is putting!

We can spend hours hitting balls trying to find the best suitable driver or irons for our game, but when it comes to putters the majority of players go for the best look or feel on the market.

Performance Tip brought to you by Michelle Steyn –BSI Golf Coach

As we putt almost twice as much as we hit a full shot during a round, choosing the correct putter for you is absolutely crucial.

Thus, it begs the question, how do you know which putter is best suited for your game?

First of all, putting is very personal, however the length of the shaft, size of the grip, as well as the weight and loft of the club, plays a

significant role

The length of height. When posture, with and your eyes putter will not

Unfortunately the time and effort people put into finding the right putter is dissapointing, especially as this is the club that is used most in the game, and also the area which makes or breaks a good score. I would recommend every golfer to get fitted for their flat stick.

59 FOR JARVIS EQUALS SUNSHINE TOUR RECORD

Casey Jarvis shot a 59 to equal the lowest tournament round in Sunshine Tour history in the third round of the Stella Artois Players Championship played at Dainfern Country Club in April.

Jarvis tapped in for par on 18 for his 59 on the Saturday to equal the 59 shot by Peter Karmis in the 2009 Lombard Insurance Classic on the Royal Swazi Spa Golf Course in eSwatini.

“I definitely didn’t wake up this morning thinking about a 59. I haven’t been playing well leading up to this round but everything just went for me today. You get out there and the putts just start dropping,” said Jarvis.

The putts started dropping for him as early as the second hole where he made his first birdie of the day. It started a run of seven consecutive birdies for a front nine of 29. Then Jarvis added two birdies and two eagles on the back nine for a 30.

“I hit some good quality shots and rolled in a lot of good putts. The putt on seven was quite long and when that went in I knew it was going to be something quite special,” said Jarvis.

“The eagle on the 17th was really big. I stood on the 18th tee with 59 in my mind. I hit a bad drive but got it done. It’s so tough to do.”

PRESTIGIOUS ADDRESS IN

Mont Choisy Golf & Beach Estate is the premier location in the north for a once-in-a-lifestyle real estate investment.

Set well back from the road, at the end of the impressive Allée des Flamboyants, the 223-hectare Mont Choisy Golf & Beach Estate in the north of Mauritius unfolds in all its historic glory. The former family-owned sugar estate is the location for sought-after luxury apartments, penthouses and villas and a Peter Matkovich-designed golf course, the only 18-hole facility in the area.

In December 2022, the club hosted the golfing elite as they competed for top honours at the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, a DP World and Sunshine Tour event. An estimated 300 million viewers worldwide watched Frenchman Antoine Rozner accept the prized trophy after a flying start with an eagle on the par-five seventh and birdies on the eighth and ninth holes. He described his play of the front nine holes, “the harder nine,” as one of his best.

The course held up says Tagg.

The par-72, 6 200m championship course has a Links-like feel and a 300m double-ended driving range. The team led by greenkeeper Rory Taylor meticulously maintains the wide, player-friendly fairways and pristine greens, complete with well-placed bunkers and water hazards on six holes. Clever undulations, tall, springy grass along the fairways, and punishing rough all add to the challenge, as do the frequent strong winds. Distinctive black volcanic rocks also mark the course. “Generous fairways and large greens give the greenkeepers ample room to arrange the course in a pleasing manner. The par threes are popular,” says Tagg.

Residency by investment

Mont Choisy Golf & Beach Estate is approved for foreign investment. Buyers who purchase one of these superluxury homes for $375,000 or more qualify themselves, their parents, and their children under 24 for permanent residency. “It’s one of the simplest residency-by-investment programmes available. There are no visitation requirements or language tests. You can own the property and have permanent residency without having to do anything else,” says Richard Haller, director at Pam Golding Properties (Mauritius).

That status enables those who want to work on the island without applying for a separate permit.

In early 2022, the Mauritius government approved an additional joint ownership option. If you buy one property for $1,125m, for example, there are three residency components to that property. That means three partners can invest $375,000 each to qualify for permanent residency for themselves and their family members as detailed above.

“Clients are buying for several reasons. which is really a rand hedge. The Mauritian dollars or euros, which is interesting for portfolio. Some clients are looking to choosing to spend part of their time in a secure investment in US dollars. Lifestyle, important motivators,” says Haller. New lifestyle hub

There is a lot of common land with plenty of facilities wrapped around it, including the golf, which is standalone from the estate, so homeowners are not landed with the levies, tennis and padel courts, a gym, equestrian facilities and a 52-acre nature reserve all on-site. A newly designed lagoon and eco pool area will subdivide phases 3, 4 and 5 and the villas, and provide more facilities for homeowners’ use.

The location is superb, with the vibrant seaside village of Grand Baie on one side and Mont Choisy Beach on the other. Indigenous vegetation enhances the area’s natural beauty and picturesque trails are provided for fitness enthusiasts who love being in nature and training outdoors, just a few winding lanes away from where they live and a short walk to the beach.

The forthcoming opening of Mont Choisy Boulevard will add even more amenities, including retail options, a park, a cycling area, and a pedestrian walkway currently in the design phase. The Mont Choisy shopping centre is a boutique mall incorporating Italian delicatessens, a great wine store, and an organic fruit and vegetable grocer that has been well received. “Residents stand to benefit significantly from this new lifestyle hub and can easily access many of the retail facilities by golf cart,” says Tagg.

The private medical clinic being constructed on the estate is nearing completion, and the retirement development has already been finished.

Rule 16.3 allows relief for a ball embedded anywhere in the “general area” (that is, the area previously known as “through the green”), except when embedded in sand.

But a Committee may adopt a Local Rule restricting relief to a ball embedded in those parts of the general area cut to fairway height or less.

In taking relief, the player drops the original ball or a substituted ball within one club-length of (but not nearer the hole than) the spot right behind where the ball was embedded.

GENERAL MANAGER

1. How long have you been in the hotel industry and what made you choose this career ?

I joined Southern Sun in 1990 on their In-service management training program. While holidaying in the Drakensberg on family vacations, I used to assist the resort as part of their entertainment team, this is where the hospitality bug bit and 33 years later I’m still locked into this rewarding vocation.

2. Who has been your biggest mentor ?

My two biggest mentors were Richard Weilers and John De Canah.

3. Describe a typical workday for you at Sabi River Sun?

Sabi River Sun is a multi-faceted resort with numerous paradigms to consider daily. With 104 6-sleeper timeshare chalets, 60 bedroom hotel, 18 hole golf course as

well as 3 tennis courts, 5 swimming pools, a squash court, a lawn bowels green and volley ball court, you need to spread your time across a number of areas during the day and don’t forget the onsite hippos.

4. Has the hospitality industry grown in your opinion over the last 3 years ? Unfortunately the COVID 19 pandemic was disastrous for the hospitality industry, however there has been steady recovery and with the return of the international travelers, we should start seeing growth in the near future.

5. The game on the golf course must cause some headaches every now and then, how do you manage this at Sabi River Sun?

We do not have any game as such roaming our course, however we are working

on humane methods to control the geese population that does not include extermination.

6. In your opinion, what factors contribute to excellent customer service ?

First and foremost, you have to have a service orientated personality. This coupled with the willingness to serve, attention to details and constantly focusing on delivering to customers needs and expectations will tick the majority of the boxes. Whilst friendliness and an unforced smile will get you far, it’s the delivery that counts.

7. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life ?

The career of a hotelier means being available on property when you are needed. This certainly includes evenings and weekends and holidays as these are often your busiest times. however you lean to balance your work, personal and family time.

8. What do you enjoy doing in your free time ?

I am an avid nature enthusiast and due to my proximity to the Kruger Park, I tend to spend as much free time there as possible.

9. Do you still get time to play a round of golf ?

Whilst it may seem expectant that if you live on a golf course you get to play a lot of golf, this is not always the case. Your first and foremost duty is to the resort operations and guests. I do attempt to play with members and guests in most of the club golf days and sneak in the odd Sunday afternoon game every now and then.

LIV GOLFERS EARNS INVITE TO PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Days after Talor Gooch received an invite to the PGA Championship, Anirban Lahiri will also be at the Major

As the golfing calendar makes it way towards the men’s second Major of the year, we are seeing the field being finalised for the PGA Championship. However, surrounding Major participation, it has been LIV’s Talor Gooch who has caught the headlines, with the American claiming that he is no longer in the field for the US Open.

The news came after Gooch said that the USGA had changed their qualification criteria – despite him previously thinking he’d made it into the US Open. However, just a day later it was revealed that he had secured an invite to the PGA Championship, which takes place a month prior, with Gooch not the only

player from the LIV Golf League to actually secure an invitation. Anirban Lahiri has also secured a spot in the field at the PGA Championship.

Speaking at LIV Golf Singapore, Lahiri stated that: “Regarding the PGA Championship, I am delighted they decided to give me a spot. This validates my very tough decision to go to the International Series Vietnam when all that was going on back home.”

He went on to add: “I am thankful to the PGA of America that their decision was not swayed by other things going on in the world of golf. This is going to be special for me. My last Major was the PGA Championship last year. There can’t be a bigger reward in golf than playing in Majors.”

So, how did Lahiri secure his invite you may ask? Well, despite the fact that LIV is still without Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points, Lahiri managed a runner-up finish in the recent International Series event in Vietnam. The top 100 in the world rankings will qualify for the PGA Championship and, because he had managed to vault back to 95th in the world with that performance, he claimed an invite.

Regarding Gooch, who became the first player to win back-to-back LIV Golf events after success in Adelaide and Singapore, he also secured an invite due to his standing in the OWGR, which is currently World No.60.

The American’s focus will now be on a decent performance at Oakhill CC to book a spot in the US Open, with his most likely route being to ensure he is still in the world’s top 60 two weeks before the tournament.

GOLFRSA RISING STAR NEWMAN SHINES IN SCOTLAND

After a winning start to the 2023 local season, talented North West junior Bryan Newman tested the waters in the prestigious Scottish Boys’ Open Championship in April and came incredibly close to a breaking through on the international stage.

Teeing off in the 144-strong field featuring top juniors from 13 countries at Lundin Golf Club, the 15-year-old Pecanwood golfer was seven strokes off the pace after an opening two-over-par 74.

Subsequent rounds of 69 and 68 rocketed Newman up the leaderboard and he fired a superb 66 that featured seven birdies in the final round to close out a runner-up finish on seven-under 277, finishing just one shot behind Irish winner Seán Keeling.

South Africa’s No 2-ranked Under-17 golfer called the experience incredible after being presented with Scottish Boys Under-16 Trophy: “I truly enjoyed my time here in Scotland, learning to play true links golf,” he said.

“It was not the easiest of conditions; we had rain and wind and I learned how to hit shots, and to manage my game really well. I was proud to show South Africa in a good light against the European golfers and being in contention was awesome.”

In January, Newman reeled in his fourth GolfRSA National title with a wire-to-wire victory in the Nomads National Order of Merit Coastal at Selborne, continuing a trend that started with breakout six-stroke victory in the 2021 Joburg Under-15 Junior Open at Eagle Canyon.

He also led from start to finish in his seven-stroke triumph in the 2022 Nomads Gowrie Farm SA Under-15 Challenge and defended his Joburg Under-15 Junior Open at the end of last year in wire-to-wire style, this time with a runaway nine-stroke victory at Kyalami CC.

We caught up with Bryan following his impressive performance in Scotland and

chatted to the grade 10 Steyn City School learner about goals, idols and a few of his favourite things,.

LEWIN REIGNS SUPREME IN NOMADS SA U-19 MATCH PLAY

his runner-up finish in the Nomads South African Junior Invitational at Rondebosch GC in March.

Making his debut in this event, the 17-year-old Western Province junior was among the leaders in the 72-hole stroke play qualifier after firing rounds of 65 and 66, but he backpedalled with a 79 in the third. He rallied with solid closing 70 to finish seventh overall to secure his spot in the top 32 that advanced to the match play.

He had a tough fight on his hands against his first two opponents, Pecanwood’s Bryan Newman in round one and Serengeti’s Jonathan Wilsenach in round two, but once he got his nose in front, Lewin beat both players 1-up to advance.

After routing Limpopo’s Amicus de Beer 3 & 2 to make the top four, he downed Pecanwood’s last hope, Luc Gavagnin, 2-up to reach the 36-hole against Gauteng North’s Barnard.

Steenberg’s Pearce Lewin claimed his a maiden GolfRSA national junior title after triumphing over Charl Barnard in a strong showing in the Nomads SA Boys Under-19 Match Play Championship at Pecanwood G&CE

“All credit to Charl, because he played really well and barely missed a putt;” a delighted Lewin said after making it five wins out of five with a 3 & 2 win in the 36-hole final.

“Really happy with this win. “I’ve worked really hard on my mental game with Theo Bezuidenhout from BVP Sport Psychology and with my coaches Etienne Olivier and Terence Boardman at EOGA Academy over the last year. It’s nice to be rewarded for all the hours I put into my game.”

Lewin was among the favourites at the start of the week after

The final match was tightly contested over the first 18 holes. “Every time Charl made a birdie, I responded with one, and vice versa. We were all square after 18 and I knew I would need to stay patient if I wanted to win,” Lewin said.

“I didn’t take any unnecessary risks; I opted for 3-woods off the tee on some holes instead of driver to make sure I put myself in a good position and I hit my irons really well. I had a couple of putts in both rounds that burnt the edge, but overall the putter behaved well.

“We both played really well and shot a couple under par in both rounds. He was a tough opponent, and it was a great contest. I am really happy that I got it done, and now I just want to continue to play these big events and see where it will take me.”

HISTORIC NOMADS SA BOYS VICTORY RECORD-BREAKER BENNETT

players as he reeled in 10 birdies for a flawless opening round of 10-under-par.

Daniel Bennett shattered three South African golfing records as he marched to a wire-to-wire 21-stroke victory in the 2023 Nomads SA Boys Under 19 Stroke Play Championship at Pecanwood G&CE

Thirty-six years since Mark McNulty won the Royal Swazi Sun Classic with a 72-hole tournament record of 29-under-par, Bennett penned his name in the history books as the new record holder with a 34-under-par 254 victory.

Moreover, the GolfRSA National Squad member’s victory over Milnerton’s Matthew Lotz was a new winning margin record, one better than the 20-stroke record set by reigning Amateur champion Aldrich Potgieter at Royal Cape Golf Club just 12 months ago.

“It’s something special for me to win this way,” said the beaming champion. “As soon as I teed off on the first day, I never looked back. There are some great names on this trophy, like Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman, Dylan Frittelli, Thriston Lawrence and Jayden Schaper. I’m thrilled that I get to add my name to the list. If I can continue playing some good golf, hopefully I can reach the levels they have reached in the game.”

Bennett came into the week on the back of his Cobra | Puma Northern Amateur Match Play victory and immediately fired a shot across the bows of all the

The 17-year-old Silver Lakes golfer was even more clinical in his second trip around the Jack Nicklaus signature course. He fired nine birdies and eagled the par-five 10th for a 36-hole total of 21-under-par 128, beating the previous record set by Hennie Otto in the 2010 Vodacom Championship at Pretoria CC by three shots.

Bennett dropped his first – and only shot – of the tournament in the third round, but immediately expunged the solitary bogey at the par-four fourth

VICTORY FOR

with a birdie on the fifth and racked up four more and he was the man to catch as a round of 68 gave him a 13-stroke lead on 25-under.

With Albert Kruger’s record 30-under-par 258 in the 2002 Eastern Gauteng Open at ERPM GC in his sights, the Gauteng North junior was relentless, and it took him only 10 holes to match the magic number.

He fired three birdies on the trot from the first and racked up further gains on the fifth, seventh and 10th holes. Further birdies on 12, 15 and 16, for a final round 63, saw him put an exclamation mark behind a feat unmatched in South African golfing history.

The new record may have been set in an amateur event, but Bennett was delighted to learn that he matched the PGA Tour record of Cameron Smith, who outduelled Jon Rahm to win the 2022 PGA Tournament of Champions on 34-under 258 at the par-73 Plantation Course at Hawaii.

“Wow, Cameron is such big name and to know that I matched his record, it pretty amazing,” said an elated Bennett. “It feels really cool to match someone of that calibre.”

Even before the match play victory at CC Johannesburg, Bennett had shown signs of a player whose form was trending in the right direction with a seventh place finish in the African Amateur Stroke Play at Leopard Creek, a top 10 in the SA Stroke Play Championship and a quarter-final spot in the SA Amateur | Championship.

“I think my game has been heading in the right direction,” he added. “I changed my grip just before I went to the Northern Amateur and this week, just before the tournament teed off, I changed my putter. I am really happy with the changes I made because I can now see the results. I’ve been working really hard with my coach Nico van Rensburg at Silver Lakes; just grinding and working hard every week.

KIERAN VINCENT JOINS BROTHER SCOTT AS WINNER

Zimbabwean Kieran Vincent made it a unique brotherly double on the Asian Tour in April when he claimed the International Series Vietnam at KN Golf Links – just 10 months after his brother Scott won the International Series England.

The Zimbabwean, in just his second year as a professional, holed a decisive 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to beat Anirban Lahiri from India and Australian Kevin Yuan by one stroke.

Vincent shot a 6-under 66, for a four-round

aggregate of 19 under, while Lahiri carded a 64 and Yuan, who missed a similar length birdie putt on the last to force a sudden-death playoff, a 68.

“It is surreal right now,” said the 25-year-old Vincent, who won US$360,000. “I think there are so many people I have to thank at this stage that have put so much time and effort into me that they deserve it more than myself.

“I feel like I am a lead singer in a band of

people that have done so much for me. I am very appreciative. I don’t think it is going to sink in for a while.”

About his final putt, he said: “That is the game of golf, you win some, you lose some, some go in, some don’t, and I am just very thankful it went in at the right time, when I needed it, and so I was just lucky enough to keep giving myself opportunities. Yeah I could not have dreamed it any better.

Vincent moved into second place on the Asian Tour Order of Merit (OOM) and third on the International Series OOM, giving him a chance to emulate his brother Scott, who won last year’s

John Collier Survey

DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR GOLF CLUB’S CARBON FOOTPRINT IS?

The sixteenth John Collier Annual Survey on Environmental Compliance and Good Governance for South Africa has been published. For those of you who ‘missed’ it, you can catch up and by visiting the following address https://johncolliergolf.com/jcs-survey-16/

The 16th John Collier Survey discusses the importance of environmental sustainability in sport and emphasises how carbon foot printing can be a useful tool for objectively assessing the environmental impact of a golf club. Here are four ways in which carbon foot printing can be justified, as an objective measure for good governance and environmental compliance:

Transparency: Carbon foot printing can promote transparency and accountability in golf clubs by providing a clear and objective measure of their environmental impact. This can help to identify areas where improvements can be made, and can also help to hold golf clubs accountable for their actions.

Compliance: Carbon foot printing can be used to ensure that golf clubs are complying with environmental regulations and standards. By measuring and reporting their carbon footprint, golf clubs can demonstrate that they are taking steps to reduce their environmental impact and meet their obligations under environmental laws.

Efficiency: Carbon foot printing can help golf clubs identify opportunities to reduce their environmental impact and increase their efficiency. By measuring their carbon footprint, golf clubs can identify areas where they can reduce emissions, save money, and improve their overall environmental performance.

Reputation: Carbon foot printing can also be used as a tool to enhance a golf club’s reputation and promote their commitment to sustainability. By measuring and reporting their carbon footprint, golf clubs can demonstrate their commitment to environmental responsibility and differentiate themselves from competitors, who are not taking similar steps.

By applying carbon foot printing methodology to golf courses, we are now able to objectively measure a golf course’s environmental impact, thereby promoting transparency and accountability, identifying opportunities for improvement, and enhancing their reputation.

If your club has an interest in calculating its carbon footprint and would like to start on a journey to carbon neutrality, why not contact the John Collier Survey through our website, or by email on ajcollier@telkomsa.net

•PÁDRAIG HARRINGTON AIMS TO GROW GOLF IN IRELAND WITH MARLAY PUTTING GREEN

Pádraig Harrington is hoping a new venue which he designed will help pave the way to make golf more accessible to a wider audience in Ireland.

The Marlay Putting Green in Dublin looks to introduce the sport to new golfers and offer an enjoyable space for people of all ages and backgrounds to gather and have fun.

It was funded by the Padraig Harrington Charitable Foundation along with grants from The R&A and Golf Ireland, supported by Sport Ireland’s special projects scheme.

Speaking at the official opening last month,

three-time Major Champion Harrington said: “It has been amazing to see this project come to fruition and I am so pleased the people of Dublin will be able experience golf in a fun and family focused setting.

“My aim for this project has always been to create an affordable and accessible facility which is designed for all ages and golf abilities at no cost. I’ve always wanted to give back to the community and find a way to introduce the game of golf to all generations.”

The putting green opened to the public for the first time in April and is completely free.

AHLERS WRAPS UP SEASON WITH TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP WIN

Jaco Ahlers left the best for last, in all respects. In the final tournament of the Sunshine Tour season, Ahlers chipped in from the bunker for birdie on the last to claim a four-shot victory in the Tour Championship at Serengeti Estates at the end of April.

Ahlers closed with a 71 and a total of 17 under par to claim his 11th victory on the Sunshine Tour. “I didn’t expect that finish. I was actually just trying to keep it together there at the end. But what a way to finish. I couldn’t have asked for more,” said Ahlers after he was drenched in six bottles of champagne by a group of Serengeti fans with whom he has a special relationship. “This one was always special. I have a big tie with Serengeti and the people here. My sponsor lives here and I have a lot of support here. This is like a second home for me. It’s a special win this one.”

Casey Jarvis finished second on 13 under par after closing with a 70. Luca Filippi, Ryan van Velzen and Pieter Moolman shared third on eight under par.

Ahlers went into the final round five strokes clear of Jarvis. After the par-three

fifth hole, Ahlers was seven shots ahead of Jarvis as he threatened to surpass the record six-stroke victory by Tristen Strydom last year. But Jarvis then made three consecutive birdies from the sixth to cut Ahlers’s lead down to three.

But Ahlers remained composed, and when Jarvis bogeyed the 11th and 14th holes, Ahlers birdied the 14th to give himself a six-shot lead with four to play. He bogeyed 17 and then made the incredible birdie on 18.

With this being the season-ending tournament, Ockie Strydom claimed the overall Luno Order of Merit title thereby securing himself a place in two of the four Majors – the 151st Open Championship at Royal Liverpool and, via the Federation Ranking on the Official World Golf Ranking, the US PGA Championship at Oak Hill – as well as in the Nedbank Golf Challenge. He also wins R500 000 in Bitcoin.

Casey Jarvis walked off with the Rookie of the Season award for a remarkable first season on the Sunshine Tour in which he challenged for a maiden victory on several occasions, shot only the second 59 in Sunshine Tour history, and finished seventh on the final Luno Order of Merit.

GOOCH BECOMES FIRST BACK-TO-BACK LIV WINNER

Talor Gooch birdied the first playoff hole to defeat Sergio Garcia and become the young tour’s first back-to-back winner at the LIV Golf Singapore event at Sentosa GC last month.

Gooch and Spain’s Garcia both shot 4-under-par 67 in the final round and weathered a one-hour storm delay to finish at 17 under through 54 holes. Both birdied the par-5 18th to set up the playoff, also at No 18.

Gooch, who won the previous week’s LIV title at Adelaide, Australia, took an aggressive line and nearly put his tee shot in the water before finding the green on his second shot and

two-putting for birdie.

After his second shot landed in a greenside bunker, Garcia found the rough on his difficult third shot and then was unable to hole out the birdie chip to extend the match.

“It’s one of those days that I’ll remember,” Gooch said. “I grew up watching Sergio. He’s one of the greatest golfers of this generation. To go and battle with him and come out on top is something I’ll never forget.”

Brooks Koepka also shot a 67 on Sunday to continued on page 57...

finish in solo third at 16 under. Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent (67) placed fourth at 15 under, with Chile’s Mito Pereira (66) another shot back in fifth place.

Gooch, 31, joined Koepka as the circuit’s only two-time winners. With his $4 million payday on Sunday, Gooch has now earned $19.6 million in 13 LIV starts.

Gooch also lifted the team trophy as his RangeGoats GC earned their first team title at 37 under, beating Garcia’s Fireballs GC by three strokes.

“We’ve been talking about being up there on the podium,” Gooch said. “I’ve been telling

them how much I’m going to spray ‘em in the face with champagne for a long time now. We knew it was coming and it was only a matter of time.”

The RangeGoats became the seventh different team to win an LIV Golf event, and the fifth in as many events this season. Gooch’s teammates were captain Bubba Watson, Harold Varner III and Thomas Pieters of Belgium.

“Thank you for stepping up and wanting to be part of the Goats,” Watson said as he stood with his teammates. “This is an honor and a privilege to be here and be alongside these guys. It’s special. They wanted to be on the team. They wanted to be on my team.”

HOW TONY FINAU FOUND PUTTING SALVATION FROM BRUCE LEE

11-foot birdie putt at the first hole, drained a long par save at the eighth, and cruised with a 5-under 66 to win by three over Rahm, with whom he plays often at Scottsdale’s Silverleaf Club in Arizona.

Every time he didn’t play well he faulted the weakest part of his game, his putting, and reached for wholesale changes. The left-hand low grip. The claw. A new putter head. But going into last season, he had an epiphany: What if all those changes were backfiring? And so, at the outset of 2022, he resolved to try something really new: staying the course.

“Don’t change your putter grip this year and see what happens,” said Finau, whose three-shot victory over Jon Rahm at the Mexico Open at Vidanta last month was his fourth win in less than a year. “Anytime I was in a putting rut, I seemed to switch grips or switch putting heads. It was a quick fix … I’d have a great week or two and then I’d be back in the same mess if not even a deeper hole with my putting further down the stretch.

“I decided that I was going to commit to putting conventionally for a full season, no matter how I was putting, just figure it out.”

It’s worked. Finau began the last round with a two-shot lead over world No. 1 Rahm, made an

Finau went from 16th to 11th in the world, and joined Rahm, Max Homa and Scottie Scheffler as multiple PGA Tour winners this season. The key, Finau said, has been his work on the greens, where he is cruising at 25th in Strokes Gained: Putting this season. He was 85th last season, up from 91st a few years ago, and way up from his career low, 134th in 2017.

Finau said his commitment to one style has helped him settle down, even if he’s still tempted to switch things up when the putts aren’t falling. As he headed down to Mexico last week, he admitted he was tempted to try something different, but resisted the urge. Good thing.

Asked if there was a lesson there, Finau nodded in the affirmative.

“No question, I think it’s a great lesson to be learned,” he said. “It’s a lot better to be great at one thing than tinker around with 10,000 different techniques and trying to figure it out.

“I think Bruce Lee has a saying about something like that,” he continued. “He’s more scared of the guy who practices one punch 10,000 times than someone who practices 10,000 things one time. I’d say I agree with that.”

DEBUT SUNSHINE TOUR WIN FOR VAN VELZEN IN LIMPOPO CHAMPIONSHIP

Ryan van Velzen claimed his maiden victory on the Sunshine Tour in a dramatic final round of the Limpopo Championship at the Euphoria Golf and Lifestyle Estate last month.

At the end of a difficult week of weather delays which forced the tournament to be reduced to 54 holes, the 21-year-old Van Velzen signed for a final round of 68 to win by a single stroke on 12 under par. Jaco Prinsloo, Luca Filippi and Daniel van Tonder shared second place on 11 under par. Former South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) member Franklin Manchest achieved an impressive top 10 finish on seven under par.

A thrilling Sunday began with the suspended second round being completed on Sunday morning. Prinsloo posted a 67 – including four consecutive birdies on the back nine – to claim a two-stroke lead on 11 under par, with Neil Schietekat his nearest challenger on nine under par. Van Velzen was in a share of third place on eight under par.

In the third and final round, Prinsloo appeared to be well in control and headed for victory as he birdied the 16th for a one-stroke lead over Van Velzen with only the par-five 18th to come. Van Velzen had already made it into the

clubhouse on 12 under.

But Prinsloo double bogeyed the 18th after hitting his approach deep into the left rough, with Van Velzen watching as he celebrated his first victory on the Sunshine Tour.

“It’s incredible. It’s awesome,” said an emotional Van Velzen. “This changes everything for me. I’m now into every single Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour co-sanctioned tournament next season.”

Van Velzen’s putter was the key for him this week. “I’ve been working really hard and I holed some good putts. I also stayed really calm during all the weather disruptions.

My caddie Luke was such a big help for me. He kept me in a good space and we just had a good time out there. I’d set myself a target for 15 under overall. I didn’t get there, but I played unbelievable golf this whole week and had so much fun out there.”

WILLIAMS CLAIMS VUSI NGUBENI WIN IN DRAMATIC FASHION AT MODDERFONTEIN

It took three playoff holes for Robin Williams to see off veteran Teboho Sefatsa and win the Altron Vusi Ngubeni Tournament at Modderfontein Golf Club.

Both players were tied at eight-under after regulation, thanks to Williams’ final round 69, while Sefatsa’s even par fourth round earned him a spot in that sudden-death playoff. On the first hole, Williams pulled his hybrid to the left of the fairway, with Sefatsa’s 3-wood off the tee also found the semi-rough on the left of the fairway.

Both players found the green with their respective second shots with Sefatsa leaving his birdie-putt short and settling for par while Williams responded with a par of his own. The same scenario unfolded in the second playoff hole as Williams’ tee shot once again landed the left of the 18th fairway, with his second shot leaving him with a 30-footer for birdie. Once more, both players made pars to force a third playoff hole.

The third hole of the play-off was even more

dramatic as both players had tough lies on the left of the fairway and after finding the greens in some spectacular fashion, Sefatsa missed his par-putt while Williams boxed his to earn his playing privileges for a full Sunshine Tour season.

“I would have loved to birdie the first hole but I’ll take this win as it is,” said a visibly tired but elated Williams. “I’m just glad to get through the week. I thought I played solidly in the first round, but the second and third I kind of struggled, so I told myself that today I’m just going to go out there and enjoy it because that’s when I play my best golf”.

“Any Q-school is always a tough and stressful week because everybody is trying to get their cards for the next season but not everyone gets to get it, so I want to also congratulate the other guys who got their cards because they all deserve it. I hope we can

push through and give a good account of ourselves on Tour.”

Williams opened the week with a round of 67 which he backed up with back-to-back rounds of 72 on Wednesday and Thursday before producing a final round of 69 which earned him a spot in the playoff. Having won a Blue Label Development Tour title in November last year, Williams was always keen to add to that and his triumph at Modderfontein Golf Club rubber-stamped that ambition.

Although he will be a rookie in the 2023/2024 season, the 22-year-old Peterborough Milton Golf Club player has already had a few starts on the Sunshine Tour this season, and will look forward to the next season with some excitement.

“This win means a lot to me because I have only had one full card on a Tour and that was on a smaller Tour in the United Kingdom. So, to get my full card here and be able to plan my season properly; without depending on invites, is really cool. It takes a lot of pressure off my shoulders and will allow me to play

with some freedom,” Williams added.

After a long absence from professional competition, Sefatsa will be proud of his week’s work and the 2011 BMG Classic winner will be keen to get going in the 2023/2024 season of the Sunshine Tour.

The top 12 players and ties from the Altron Vusi Ngubeni Tournament earn their Sunshine Tour cards for the following season while the remaining players in the top 30 will get Altron Big Easy Tour cards.

The Altron Vusi Ngubeni Tournament is open to Transformation Players, who are male and over the age of 18 at the commencement of the tournament. Transformation players are defined as Blacks, Coloureds, Indians, and Chinese who arrived in South Africa before 1994.

Players who earned their Sunshine Tour cards:

Robin Williams, Teboho Sefatsa, Siyanda Mwandla, Alpheus Kelapile, Jastice Mashego, Karabo Mokoena, Tristin Gallant, Omar Sandys, Kayle Wykes, Lindani Ndwandwe, Toto Thimba Jnr, Makhetha Mazibuko and Keelan Africa.

A WEEK BIGGER THAN GOLF

Sometimes, even on the Sunshine Tour, it’s about far more than golf. Sometimes it’s far bigger than birdies and bogeys, great shots or missed putts. The week of the Jonsson Workwear Open was one such week in golf, and the story of one woman’s journey in overcoming unimaginable adversity.

As Germany’s Nick Bachem stood on the 18th green at The Club at Steyn City celebrating his breakthrough victory in this Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour co-sanctioned tournament, next to him stood Jes Foord. She was holding a cheque for R233 000 that had been raised during the tournament through the Birdies for Purpose campaign. It was the culmination of every birdie made by the professionals competing in the event and which had been donated by Jonsson Workwear

to The Jes Foord Foundation which works to empower rape survivors through awareness, education and support.

It’s Jes’s own story that suddenly puts anything that ever happens inside the ropes at a golf tournament into stark perspective. A story of adversity, resilience and hope.

“I started The Jes Foord Foundation in 2008 after I was gang raped. I wanted to start an organisation that could be there for people who had been abused or raped and just to be that person who is there for somebody in a time when they really have no one,” said Foord.

“We have grown over the last 15 years and have lots of different projects we work with as well as free counselling, educational talks and awareness programmes. Any work we do with The Jonsson Foundation is incredible. They are always there to help us.”

Nick Jonsson, CEO of Jonsson Workwear, was delighted to be able to present Foord with this cheque. “We’ve been involved with Jes for probably 15 years now. She’s an incredible woman who does amazing work and we’ve supported her in so many different programmes, so it was an obvious choice to support her important work through this tournament.”

At the end of a remarkable tournament, the slight blonde woman who stood alongside Bachem on the

18th green on Sunday represented another powerful moment of triumph over adversity and the role sport plays in supporting this ongoing triumph in the work being done to help others.

Outside the ropes, even professional golfers fight their own individual battles. Their ability to play this game so well does not make them immune to the hardships of life and the challenges that come their way. And that’s when the support of a company that cares about community and a Tour that shares this vision can make a difference.

And a week in golf when one woman can remind us all how to keep moving forward.

“You’ve got to take it one day at a time,” said Foord of her own journey. “I always use the example of buying a bag of apples and if one is off you don’t give up on the whole bag. This support is a perfect

SUNSHINE TOUR TEES OF NEW SEASON IN AFRICA

The Sunshine Tour teed off its 2023-24 season in Africa with the FBC Zimbabwe Open at the Royal Harare Golf Club.

The Tour’s new schedule started with its African Swing in Zimbabwe and Zambia, and then also includes increased purses for the longstanding Vodacom Origins of Golf and SunBet Challenge series of tournaments.

SuperSport is once again the official broadcaster of the entire season.

The new season began at Royal Harare Golf Club, and then travels to Zambia for the Zanaco Masters at Lusaka Golf Club.

The four-tournament Vodacom Origins of Golf Series, which first teed off in 2004, will feature increased prize money of R1.5 million and then R2 million for the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final.

The four-tournament SunBet Challenge Series will also feature increased prize money of R1.25 million per event.

The Tour has announced its new schedule up to the Gary and Vivienne Player Invitational in November, and will announce its main DP World Tour

co-sanctioned summer tournaments at a later stage.

“We are confident we have put together another robust schedule that reflects the significant growth of the Sunshine Tour over the past few years,” said Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour.

“We have moved from a tournament schedule of 24 events before the COVID-19 pandemic to a schedule that is now 32 tournaments strong and with double the prize money. This new schedule gives our members maximum playing opportunities across the spectrum of our local and international events. Our Strategic Alliance with the DP World Tour remains as strong as ever and provides the global pathway for South African professionals to play their way from the Sunshine Tour onto the European Challenge Tour and then ultimately the DP World Tour and beyond.

“There is no doubt that we work in challenging economic times and I’d like to thank our sponsors and partners for their continued faith in the Sunshine Tour as a product that offers unrivalled value through our broadcast partnership with SuperSport and then our international broadcast footprint in our co-sanctioned events.”

Whatever happened

Doing this series on the greats of golf from the past has been a rewarding experience. Gaining an insight into what these champions are currently involved with, now that their heydays on the golf course are behind them has proved to be very interesting and when considering who we should contact for this edition, a name popped up that we had not heard for some time. A name that was on everybody’s lips back in the day as she paved the way for South African female golfers. That name was none other than Sally Little.

Sally Little is a South African sporting icon, a golf superstar from the 70’s to the 90’s. She enjoyed a successful 28-year career as a professional golfer competing on the world stage where she won 15 LPGA titles, including two majors, the 1980 LPGA Championship and the 1988 Du Maurier Classic.

“Initially I was not so keen on golf because there were no young girls playing golf at the time and it was considered an old man’s sport”

SA Golf Trader chatted to Sally and asked her to take us back and tell us how it all began. “I was born in Sea Point, Cape town and came from a family who loved golf. My dad was a very fine golfer at Metropolitan Golf Club and my mom played at least a few times a week. I was introduced to sports from a very young age, and I participated in tennis, netball and swimming. I really aspired to be a top swimmer. Initially I was not so keen on golf because there were no young girls playing golf at the time and it was considered an old man’s sport, although I did caddy for my dad for pocket money.

“I started in an environment where golf was played for fun, I fell in love with the sport and wanted to improve to be the best. By the time I was 14, I was competing against the under 16 boys. There were not many other aspiring girls and golf was mainly dominated by men. By 1970 I had achieved everything that I possibly could as a South African amateur golfer.

“At the age of 19, I shared the desire to turn professional with my parents and the only place to grow during those times was America. So, I went across to the States and started off as an amateur. I entered a competition in Baltimore, Maryland, where I teed it up with the LPGA professionals. I finished 3rd in that

“I had the internal drive to be a champion so when I didn’t produce the results I expected, it was difficult for me. I was and still am extremely competitive. I am fortunate to be able to impart what I have learnt, and I embody the values that I was taught while learning to play the game of golf”.

What is Sally Little up to these days? “I decided to come back to South Africa, and I am living in my beautiful hometown of Cape Town. We began the Little Golf Trust 10 years ago and my time is spent working with young girls from different backgrounds where I share with them my life’s journey, how important education is and of course, I teach them the game of golf. Golf is a sport that offers massive opportunities on many different levels.

“The game of golf will always be my first love - it fills my soul. I am fortunate to be an honorary member at most golf clubs in South Africa. I don’t play as often as I would like to because the Trust keeps me rather busy but when I do play – it’s pure joy “.

& Golf course superintendent

Skukuza Golf Club

1. When did you realise that turf management was the industry you want to take further?

I started with Skukuza Golf Course 7 years ago by just helping and learning from all the people around me over this time as I didn’t have a background in greenkeeping.

My dad did the maintenance of Skukuza cricket field as a hobby, I picked up some tips from him building and preparing cricket pitches, and I took that part of it over to the golf course. I was always trying to make cricket my career after school, but that only went as far as 4 years of first-class cricket in the UK.

2. What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent?

The most satisfying thing is to hear the positive feedback and comments of the golfers that haven’t been here for a long time and their positive feedback on how it has improved and how nice the course is playing.

your biggest challenges maintaining the course with so many “outside influences”?

With all the animals on the course during the day and night it does present its challenges, elephants breaking branches pushing over trees, hippo, buffalo, giraffe, kudu, warthog and the list goes on that graze on and off the course and damage it with hoof marks.

If all the animals, we see on a weekly basis had to be on the course at the same time they could consume up to 5.5 tons of vegetation per day and with this in mind the course is in fantastic condition even with all these challenges.

We need to take all the flags in every night due to the hyenas that eat them, a problem you don’t have anywhere else in the world. Here we lock things away due to animal damage not due to theft.

4. With Skukuza GC being unfenced how do you ensure the safety of those playing the course?

We have never had an incident on the course while golfers were playing, reason for this is that people forget that animals are also scared of humans, and they have either heard, seen or smelled you long before you have seen them. Animals will rather stay away from us. With the movement in the staff village and the traffic on the course and machinery cutting there is more than enough disturbance for them. Yet saying that we do let the golfers sign an indemnity form before they tee off.

5. What animal causes you the biggest headache?

I love all the animals, but warthogs are probably the ones that damage the course the most as they dig everything up. Elephants also do some serious damage to the trees.

3. You are at Skukuza GC a unique golf course in the middle of the Kruger National Park, what are

6. Skukuza GC has undergone a lot of changes recently, what were the most significant ones?

8. What are the differences in grasses (fairway, rough, greens) at Skukuza GC to other parts of the country?

We have Cynodon on our golf course and Royal Blue on the greens that were redone at the end of 2022. This is a grass that does well in our climate where we get temperatures in the high 40’s most of the summer.

9. How big a difference does climate and location play in golf course maintenance?

It plays an important role. We are lucky that we don’t get frost or very cold conditions at Skukuza, winter days are in the mid 20’s which allows for some growth. Our greens, tee boxes and fairways are green for 12 months but our rough doesn’t have any irrigation so that goes yellow in winter.

10. Do you think it should be mandatory for each golf courses to close one day per week for maintenance?

In an ideal world it would be nice but unfortunately, we can’t afford it as we as situated in a National Park, so we work around this and make sure we get our cutting done early in the morning and all our spraying done when we have quiet days.

11. How important is it for golfers to repair their divots and pitch marks immediately vs only a couple of days or week later?

It makes a huge difference, the divots on the fairways and tee boxes can recover immediately if treated properly with the sand holders on the carts. Same thing with pitch and hoof marks on the greens.

We redid all our greens which was much needed. They were completely reshaped, and new irrigation was put it as well. We gave the entire clubhouse facility a facelift with a new bar and deck overlooking the 9th par 3 finishing hole over the dam.

7. Can anyone become a member of Skukuza GC? Membership is now open to everyone that would like to be part of this unique golf course. Please feel free to contact the Popshop, the staff there will assist you in getting the right forms and information proshop@skukuza-golf.co.za.

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments.

Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Well placed bunkers and undulating fairways mean that those seeking to card a low round need to think their way around the course whilst those looking to simply have fun will enjoy themselves too.

Umkomaas is a great choice for those wanting to get the whole family out into the fresh air. We offer exceptional family membership packages and the opportunity to learn to play via our KidzGolf programme

Living up to our reputation as the Friendliest Club, Umkomaas offers a warm welcome to visitors both on and off the course. Competitions are held weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays and visitors are always welcome.

We look forward to welcoming you soon!

BARKER BREAKS THROUGH WITH SUNSHINE TOUR VICTORY

When it comes to a Players Championship, there could not have been a more popular winner of the Stella Artois Players Championship amongst all his peers than Kyle Barker.

The man with the biggest smile on the Sunshine Tour had even more reason to do so as Barker claimed his maiden victory on the circuit at Dainfern Country Club last month.

A week of incredible scoring saw Barker sign off with a 61 to win on 30 under par. He finished six shots clear of second-placed Peter Karmis, who closed with a 64, and Casey Jarvis, who signed for a final round of 68.

Karmis and Jarvis sharing second place alongside each other was another special moment as they also share the lowest round in Sunshine Tour history of 59. Karmis shot his 59 in 2009 and Jarvis equaled that this week in the third round of this tournament.

But the biggest smile and applause belonged to the ever-popular Barker.

“Thank you so much guys. Honestly, this feels like a dream right now. To all the supporters out there and everyone that came, it was just amazing. Thank you so much,” said Barker.

Barker was three shots off the overnight lead and

then stormed through the field with the kind of free-flowing golf he’s known for, making six birdies on the front nine and then five on the second nine.

“My mindset was key out there today. I played carefree golf. I didn’t mind if I made a mistake, and if I did I bounced back immediately. My mindset was just so strong and my short game was also very good out there. The greens were superb. I’m just so proud of myself for doing this.”

In a week of memorable moments, Barker said his six iron into the par-five 18th green would stand out as his favourite.

“I’ve never felt my hands shake so much in my life but I’m just glad it came out of the middle of the clubface and finished in the middle of the green, and the two-putt to win was awesome. I’m just so thankful to my family and my fiancé, Savannah, for their support.”

And one of the most popular players on the Sunshine Tour paid tribute to his fellow players as well.

“I also want to thank my best pals – my travel buddies. There have been a lot of ups and downs this year, but I really want to thank them. It’s been amazing and I look forward to our future memories to come.”

Like anything a lot of planning goes into a successful overseeding whether it be a green, tee or pitch.

Checklist:

Seed – choose the variety that best suites your climate and agronomic stresses.

Equipment – service and prepare all necessary equipment.

Small tools – rakes, spades, tape measures, irrigation flags, seeders, fertilizer spreader

Staff – plan meals as you will be working some long hours.

Team briefing – ensure each person understands their tasks clearly and have team leaders.

Sprigs – offer these to a neighbour if you can’t use them yourself.

Verticut at – 6mm

Mow done to 6mm.

Feed birds wild bird seed one day prior to seeding

Pre-seeding:

Apply Primo Maxx to hold back the existing turf & give your seed a change to establish itself.

Low down as low as you can go (tee/stadium – down to 8mm is good)

Final prep. & seeding day:

Check loadshedding schedule to plan watering after seeding!

Final verticut

Ghandi clean up x 2

Seed E/W x 2

Fertilize x 2 directions.

Spray – 2 litres/ha Ryder

10 litres/ha Qualibra

10 litres/ha Talking Turf Star

1 kg/ha Heritage (to prevent damping off)

5 litres/ha Daconil WS (to prevent algae)

Allow to dry on the leaf for 15-30 mins before watering in for 20 mins.

Check your baby at 8am, 10am, 12h00, 14h00 & 15h30 until the seed is established.

There is a very fine balance between too much & too little water.

First cut 8-14 days after seeding (removing 1/3 of the leaf blade)

Apply Primo Maxx at 100ml/ha after the 3rd cut to encourage rooting & tillering.

Mow 3 times per week & enjoy watching your incredible playing surface establishing.

The nutrition programme is critical to your success. Always check your soil results before your nutrition programme.

DP WORLD TOUR STATEMENT ON MEMBER RESIGNATIONS

The DP World Tour confirms it has received membership resignations from Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, Richard Bland and Lee Westwood who were sanctioned for serious breaches of the Tour’s Conflicting Tournament Regulation committed last June.

The DP World Tour would like to take this opportunity to thank the four players for the contribution they have made to the Tour and in particular to Sergio, Ian and Lee for the significant part they have played in Europe’s success in the Ryder Cup over many years.

Their resignations, however, along with the sanctions imposed upon them, are a consequence of their own choices.

As we have consistently maintained throughout the past year, the Tour has a responsibility to its entire membership to administer the member regulations which each player signs up to.

These regulations are in place to protect the collective interests of all DP World Tour members.

The independent panel appointed by Sport Resolutions recognised this, determining that our Conflicting Tournament Regulation and its application in the circumstances did not go beyond what was necessary and proportionate to the Tour’s continued operation as a professional golf tour and that we have a legitimate interest in protecting the rights of our full membership by enforcing it.

FIRST-EVER LIV GOLF ADELAIDE EVENT CEMENTS ITSELF IN THE LANDSCAPE OF AUSTRALIA’S MAJOR SPORTING EVENTS

The inaugural LIV Golf Adelaide tournament made its highly anticipated and overwhelmingly successful debut last month, welcoming capacity crowds to The Grange Golf Club while setting ground-breaking records on and off the course.

Held April 21-23, LIV Golf’s first event in Australia marked the introduction of the league’s innovative format in the Southern Hemisphere, with many players on LIV’s star-studded roster playing on Australian soil for the first time, bringing elite golf to a previously starved market of over 25 million people.

With an official attendance of 77,076, LIV Golf Adelaide firmly cemented its newly carved-out

position in Australia’s landscape of major international sporting events.
