Vaisakhi campaigns to support Guru Nanak Diversity Village

About Guru Nanak Diversity Village

We are building Guru Nanak Diversity Village – a 3-storey, 125 bed, residential care facility that will provide culturally sensitive Long-Term Complex Care to seniors with a South Asian background in a sustained and purposeful manner, within the context of person-centred care. This facility will have diverse staff to ensure that residents are fully understood when speaking their mother tongue; the food is familiar to them; their religions can be practiced in an environment that is appropriate, and they are in a place that feels like home and in an environment where family and friends feel welcome. Culturally-sensitive health care is proven to be a successful and beneficial approach, especially when it comes to caring for our seniors in a society and community that has become increasingly multicultural. With the strong

support of that community, this much-needed project will become a reality in the very near future. It will be a multi-storey concrete building, built to hospital standards on two and a half acres of land, designed in the style of a Village made up of “Houses”. Out of $82.5 million, BC Government through BC housing is financing 77.5 million. The rest of the 5 million is being raised from the community.

FRUITICANA is an active member of the local community, committed to being a goodwill partner, whether it is through philanthropic initiatives, sponsoring community events, or running amazing contests, Fruiticana aims to be more than just a neighbourhood supermarket. Tony Singh, Founder of FRUITICANA pledged $513,000 towards the Guru Nanak Diversity Village. Their philosophy is centered around strengthening communities where their associates and customers live every day. To reach the pledged goal, every FRUITICANA lower mainland store is running an in-store fundraising campaign during the month of April. Customers can be a part of this campaign by donating as little as $2 anytime they shop at one of the 17 Fruiticana stores across BC. “I always help the community, I never forget the community who supported me for the last 25 years, and that’s why we’re still here. We give it back to the community every year, every month, every day. We will be running our in-store 2022 fundraising campaign of collecting donations for GURU NANAK DIVERSITY VILLAGE starting April 1st, 2022. April is an auspicious month of Vaisakhi, and I am confident with your support and from our customers, we will attain our goal of collecting donations for this very important project for our seniors,” says Tony Singh, Founder Fruiticana.

“We’re grateful to partners like FRUITICANA and their commitment and support for this important community project. On behalf of PICS Society, I want to thank and commend Tony Singh from Fruiticana for his very generous donation of $513,000 for the Guru Nanak Diversity Village. The continuous support of our work by organizations like Fruiticana, combined with the collective generosity of Fruiticana employees and customers across the Lower Mainland, will allow our teams to continue to provide the best care for our seniors, says Satbir Cheema, CEO & President, PICS Society. This is an exciting month for PICS Society and our seniors. To celebrate Sikh Heritage Month, students at LA Matheson Secondary are continuing with their Vaisakhi Fundraiser. It began with a target of $ 700, but LA Matheson Secondary collected ten times higher the amount for ‘Guru Nanak Diversity Village’ (GNDV). Last year, a core group of grade 8-12 students raised $8,000 for the GNDV project. They went above and beyond their goal.

They have pledged to raise $13,000 over a period of four years.

Rav knew exactly why her brother Michael held on for his last few days:

To become an organ donor and save five lives. Michael Singh Mann, affectionately called Mikey by his family, was the youngest of four siblings. Remembered as a kind, humble, and loving human being, the Mann family was forever changed when Michael and his wife headed to Whistler to celebrate their second wedding anniversary. A car accident left Michael in critical condition. He had no pulse for 25 minutes before paramedics arrived and airlifted him to Vancouver General Hospital. Michael’s older sister, Rav Mann Johal, rushed into his room to see him, where she was shocked to see so many tubes and machines working to try and keep him alive. “My brother, who was a gym maniac and a tall, young, extremely handsome strong man, was just laying there,” she recalls. It was difficult to comprehend.

Remembering Michael 11 years older than Michael, Rav says she felt more like a mom than a sister to him. “I was there for every milestone and every celebration,” she notes. “I would rush home from school during lunch to give him a bath and feed him so he could nap. I wouldn’t miss out on anything.” She describes Michael as humble, kind, loving, family-oriented and respectful, and he had the gift of lighting up any room.

“He always had the best smile and the best energy,” Rav says. “He had a natural talent to make anyone feel welcomed, loved and cared for. He was the funniest guy ever. He could have anyone laughing out loud to the point where their stomachs hurt.” She considered him “the glue” that held their family together. “Family meant everything to him. He was 26 years old – one month away from 27 – when he passed away,” Rav says.

Five lives saved By the day after the accident, Michael had suffered irreparable brain damage from severe swelling. Doctors explained to the family that Michael would not survive.

During those difficult days, a doctor approached the family to talk about the possibility of organ donation. Michael had not yet registered as an organ donor and his family was asked if they thought organ donation might be something Michael would want. “He was the most giving person with the biggest heart. My baby brother would go out of his way to help anyone at any time,” Rav said. “He was the most selfless person I have ever known.” After discussing the options, the Mann family knew that the reason Michael retained a pulse for those final days after the accident was so he could donate his organs. Michael would ultimately save five lives – donating his kidneys, liver, heart, and lungs.

Honouring Michael’s gifts of life Since Michael’s passing, his parents attended a Donor Medal Ceremony to honour their son and connect with other grieving families. Rav also decided to get involved with BC Transplant to help raise awareness. “Organ donation means to pass life on and give a second chance to those that need one,” she explains. “I want to honour what my brother was able to do. I would like others to get inspired by his story and not be afraid to sign up.” She urges everyone to have a conversation with their family members to decide what loved ones would ultimately want. “The pain we feel every day is indescribable, and we would never want another family to go through that,” Rav says. “I always imagine the recipient -- knowing that pieces of my brother are still here keeps us going.”

Take two minutes and save a life. Register as an organ donor, then talk to your family about your decision. taketwominutes.ca

Child Abuse – Taking an in- depth look at the community’s role regarding abuse. By Amarjit Sahota & Nimi Chauhan Q: Can you share some statistical information about the prevalence of child abuse? A: Child abuse is a serious issue facing society. It is difficult to gauge the extent or scope of the problem given that the data changes over time and is only based upon the number of reported cases. We know from experience that many victims never tell anyone about their abuse and thus any statistics noted likely underestimate the prevalence of child maltreatment. To provide a sense of the seriousness of this phenomenon, research indicates that: • 33% of Canadians report some experience of child maltreatment before the age of 15 • 1 in 3 girls will be sexually abused before they reach adulthood – for boys it is 1 in 6 • Children with disabilities are four times as likely to experience violence as their peers

Q: If an individual is concerned about the welfare of a child, what might be some indicators of possible abuse? A: A critical first step in determining if a child maybe at risk of harm is understanding the various indicators or symptoms of maltreatment. It is important to note however that a single factor taken in isolation does not necessarily mean that child abuse is occurring, only that the situation merits a closer look.

The following list is not exhaustive and fuller information can be found in The BC Handbook of Action on Child Abuse and Neglect. Possible Signs of Physical Abuse: • Unexplained injuries such as burns, bites, bruises, broken bones, or black eyes • Child appears anxious; depressed, withdrawn, or aggressive • Seems frightened of his or her parents or reluctant to return home • There is a marked change in behaviours such as eating or sleeping Possible Signs of Neglect: • Is frequently late or absent from school • Appears consistently unkempt and/or has severe body odour • Says that there is no one at home to provide care Possible Signs of Sexual Abuse: • Sudden changes in behaviour such as loss of appetite, refusal to attend school or runs away • Displays unusual (age inappropriate) sexual knowledge or behaviour • Reports having nightmares or is bedwetting • Experiences bleeding, bruising, or swelling in their private parts •Becomes pregnant or contracts a sexually transmitted disease, particularly if under 14 years of age Possible Signs of Emotional Abuse: • Inconsistent behaviour characterized by extremes (overly compliant versus demanding,

passive versus aggressive) • May show signs of depression or suicidal thoughts • Inability to form emotional connections with others

Q: If someone is concerned about a child’s safety, how do they make a report to the authorities? A:Making a report is easy as there is one centralised number to call, which is 1-800-663-9122 and staff are on duty 24/7. If a child or youth is in immediate danger, the call should be made to the Police emergency number (911).

More detailed information about the child protection process can be found in a document from the provincial government entitled “Responding to Child welfare Concerns: Your Role in Knowing When to and What to Report.”

Q: So, what happens after a report is made? A: Typically, child protection staff will assess the information contained in the report to determine next steps. This will also include a review of the family history (if the family had come to the attention of MCFD/DAA in the past) to assist in determining the most appropriate response. Once this is complete, the possible outcomes are as follows: • No response necessary (no further action will be taken) • A referral to a community agency • An offer of support services or • Initiation of a child protection response which is a more formal process where the child(ren) and their parents or guardians can expect to be interviewed by Social Workers. Collateral checks may also be made with community professionals such as school counsellors and/ or physicians who may have useful information about the family to inform the assessment underway.

Amarjit Sahota was born in India and raised in England from an early age. Amarjit has a Bachelors Degree in Social Work, and has worked in various positions from front line to senior leadership. In his most recent role, he was the Director of Practice for the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) until January 2020 when he was appointed as Vice President of Sophie’s Place Child and Youth Advocacy Centre. Over the years, he was instrumental in shaping the Ministry’s approach to intimate partner violence both at a local and provincial level. He was also the Ministry lead in the creation of Sophie’s Place which was the first Centre of its kind in British Columbia and was short listed as a finalist for the Premier’s Award in 2017.

Nimi Chauhan is a mediator and a community activist. She has been working in the field of domestic violence, sexual assault, and suicide for the last 20 years. Nimi is currently employed by the provincial government of British Columbia, and she is also a writer. She has served various positions with community agencies and has served on numerous boards varying from community policing, national parole board, addictions and recovery, youth gang violence as well as political bodies. She is also the founder of Sahara Services.

GIVING BACK TO HUMANITY Q: What inspired you to get into the health industry and become a Mind & Body Coach? A: I remember something my Dad said when I was very young. He said “the purpose of one’s life is to find a way to give back to humanity.” I liked that. That was a cause I could get behind. I was an environmental consultant for the early part of my professional career, yet I found myself feeling extremely unfulfilled in that industry. I remember looking around my office and dreaded the thought of spending most of my life climbing the corporate ladder. So, I asked myself what was I good at and how could I give back to humanity? I realized I had a gift to share (fitness) and I couldn’t squander it sitting in a desk for the rest of my life. I was an athlete growing up and I loved to play sports. I especially loved sprinting. As I got older, and the challenges of life began to present themselves, I began to see how exercising put me in a state of mind that gave me clarity and helped me resolve most of my problems. As a child, I faced bullying, racism and there were moments where I felt very alone. Exercise helped me process my emotions and became a form of therapy for me. I saw the profound effects this had on my life and I wanted to share this ability to handle life problems with others.

Q: Who were your role models (personal and professional) growing up? Are they different in adulthood?

and it made me emotional at the end. If people like Freddy Mercury or Walt Disney never followed their dreams, a lot of the great things we have today wouldn’t even exist.

A: For my personal role model, it’s my Dad because he gave me my entrepreneurial spirit. I remember him saying things like “A person will never get rich working for someone else”. He taught me how to work hard and work with my hands by putting me and my siblings to work on our blueberry farm. I know how to use power tools, drive tractors and build things thanks to him. My Dad is also an extremely giving and generous man. He always found a way to give back, even if he didn’t have much. I practice giving back in big and small ways because of him and it’s a big part of why I do what I do.

Q: What was the turning point in your life when you decided to take control of your health? A: I would have to say it was when I got sick and tired of feeling pathetic and sorry for myself. In my early adult life, I was living a life that I wasn’t happy with. I was in a career that I disliked, I wasn’t sure of my direction in life and I was spending my free time doing things to distract myself from this reality. I wasn’t taking care of my body and I was eating food that was fast, easy and cheap.

practice pull ups. Once I got into the habit of moving again, I began wanting to eat better as well. I liked the feeling of feeling strong so as soon as I could afford it, I got a gym membership. I never wanted to feel like that again and now I help others who are in similar situations to where I was. I feel great honour when people come to me for help because I know reaching out for help isn’t always easy.

Q: How do you achieve balance in your life?

A: I’ve learned that taking rest is just as important as working hard. So instead of waking up and rushing into my work day, I take time for myself in the morning by following a self care routine that gets me grounded, centered, and in the right state In my professional life, Arnold When I was at my lowest point, of mind. On the weekends I will get out into nature. Nature is my reset button. These days we are highly stimulated by phones, emails, social media, worrying about our future, keeping a social life and much more. When I get into nature, it reminds me that life can be simple, it brings me into the present moment and reminds me not to rush. There’s nothing quite like staring up at a mountain or out at the ocean that humbles me and puts all my worries and doubts into perspective. It reminds me that we are here for a fraction of time, and to enjoy the journey while we can. Q: Tell us about your ideal cheat meal. How often do you allow yourself to indulge? A: Because I have celiac disease (which means I can’t eat any gluten), a good gluten free pepperoni Pizza always hits the spot...or nachos! I’ll have one of these once a week. For dessert, Lemonde Gluten Free Bakery in Vancouver has a phenomenal cinnamon danish that I’ll treat myself to every week or two. program–both online and in-person. What is the process involved for clients to get started on your programs? A: My online programs work extremely well for those who are busy, understand the value of time and who need a little extra accountability and motivation to help them reach their goals. The process starts with a consultation to determine your goals, skill level and to see if my online program would be a good fit. There are 3 parts to my programs: Exercise, Nutrition and Mindfulness.

Exercise: The beauty of my online program is that I can help people who don’t live in the same city as me. Thanks to the rapid evolution of technology, I am able to deliver their programs through an app that has their custom workouts, along with video tutorials, available to them at any time. I can also see whether or not they have completed their workouts and message them which provides accountability and motivation. It’s feels like I’m right there with them in the gym! Nutrition: I educate my clients on how to eat in order to hit their goals. My goal is to change the relationship people have with food. I want my clients to enjoy eating by making informed decisions rather than being unsure if they’re eating the right or wrong thing. There is a lot of confusion around nutrition these days. I don’t believe in fad diets and I explain how

different foods work in your body and how to read nutrition labels. These are life long skills that my clients will have for the rest of their lives.

I want to continue to use my platform to inspire and motivate others through more speaking opportunities. There are many issues I feel strongly about (like those I mentioned earlier) and the more we bring light to these issues, the more we can heal from them and create a happier and more harmonious future for everyone. A big future goal of mine is to build a safe house in India and Canada for those affected by sexual abuse and domestic violence. It builds character because you are repeatedly doing something that is hard. As a result, you gain confidence in your abilities and shatter self limiting beliefs. This confidence spills over into other areas of our life. The sexy body is just a positive by-product, haha! My goal is to impact as many lives as possible.

Building a Reputable Brand and Family Legacy

Two weeks after landing in Toronto from his home country of India, 19-year-old Ashwani Kanda took up a job as a lab technician at a local optical lab in 1980. After noticing his penchant for hard work and attention to detail, the lab’s owner encouraged Ashwani to further his education and study to become an optician. After completing the three-anda-half-year course, Ashwani became a Licensed Optician in 1984 and eventually opened the first location of Kanda Optical in Etobicoke. This location brings back many fond memories for community members who became regular clientele over the last few decades. Now with 16 locations currently thriving within the

country, it’s easy to see that Kanda Optical has become a brand that is popular among customers and franchisees alike.

journey in the optical industry, he often used his own hands to make products such as bi-focal lenses and fit them into frames manually.

When asked to reflect on the reasons for its success, Ashwani says that over the course of many years, most individuals took notice of how well the original store was being managed and consequently wanted to become associated with the name and brand.

Similarly, in order to thrive in the business, he had to become well-versed in all areas of the industry.

He adds that because the technology was still in its infancy when he started his www.kandaoptical.com

The knowledge that he slowly gained through exposure to different facets of an optical store allowed him to become versatile and known for his ability to analyze, find and sell high-quality products.

“Now the equipment is so easy to use as we have all these computerized systems where you press buttons, and the machines are easy to operate. But when I started, we didn’t have all of this. We needed to do everything by hand, and we needed to make sure that we learned how to do everything right….and that’s why by the

time I opened my own store, I knew how to do everything, including the backend of fabricating glasses and the sales aspect of our job,” says Ashwani.

This “hands-on” approach has been ingrained in his two sons Sandeep and Akash, who spent a lot of time observing and learning from their father during their younger years.

wanted to do what I was doing. Sometimes parents establish [a company] that is really good, but the kids have no interest… It’s great to have a family business because you have people who are there for you unconditionally, whether it is day or night. Also, we all have a mutual interest and want to make sure that the business is doing well.”

Their interest in the field inspired them to become opticians just like their father, who says that he is extremely fortunate that his sons have always taken a keen interest in the family business. “I was lucky that my kids

One look at their Instagram page - which is mostly handled by Sandeep and Akash - is enough to convey the fact that they have been able to “checkmark” both of these boxes by offering some of the Some of the ways that Ashwani most prestigious brands from and his family ensure the around the world at Kanda continued success of the Optical. www.kandaoptical.com

Besides doing very customized work that includes putting diamonds on frames, the optical store also carries a lot of well-known and exclusive brands including Cartier, Chanel, Chrome Hearts, and Dita. Interestingly enough, Ashwani says that more than fifty percent of the specialty frames that his team sells come under the category of non-prescription because a large number of customers like to wear glasses to make a fashion statement. Talking about the typical process that an individual will go through when they enter a Kanda Optical store, Ashwani explains that the process will vary depending on the customer’s specific need. “If a customer has a prescription, then our frame stylist will start showing them frames based on their prescription, face shape, budget, and colour preference. Once they choose a frame, our dispensers will take over and dispense the lens according to the individual’s requirements. If an individual walks into the store and does not have a prescription, we do pre-testing, and a doctor will do an eye exam. Once they make a prescription, a frame specialist will assist the individual as they look for www.kandaoptical.com

frames,” explains Ashwani. When asked about some of the changes that he has seen over his many years in the business, Ashwani says that society, in general, has become increasingly aware of the importance of taking care of their eyes. “I used to hear people talk about their grandparents and say for example, that they were 95 years old and never needed to wear glasses. The truth is that they never needed to see as sharply as we do now. Now, most people believe that they have to have the best quality of life, and that’s why they [make sure that] they can see clearly.” Due to the fact that most of them are now getting eye exams done at school, even children are more conscious and aware of the importance of eye health. Despite this increase in knowledge, parents should take the responsibility to get children’s eyes examined at least once a year. Similarly, adults should also go for check-ups at least once a year. According to Ashwani, getting regular checkups is important in order to track changes in one’s general eye health and prescription.

Yearly Senior’s Event Understandably, eye health is particularly important for seniors and as a well-known figure in the optical industry, Ashwani understands and believes in this sentiment very strongly because of his parents. ` Elaborating on this particular topic, Ashwani explains that his parents advised him to always remember that the income level of an individual lessens significantly after they retire. Consequently, many seniors may not be able to afford the essential items that they need in order to maintain their health, including glasses.

particular event] has given us a lot of blessings. Automatically every year around December, I start to get calls from seniors asking about the event. And over the years, I have seen the same seniors coming again and again. This is something that I feel very proud about,” explains Ashwani. Ask him about the future and Ashwani reveals that his team currently has “more than five locations in the pipeline.” While one location will be situated in the city of Brampton, another one will be opening up in Mississauga.

Understandably, with a flourishing business, and “We started a senior’s event multiple responsibilities, taking that has been going on for care of his health is extremely more than 20 years now. dedicated and available seven days a week,” Ashwani always takes a break whenever he is feeling overworked or distressed. While he believes in the importance of having hobbies and taking vacations, he also enjoys socializing with his friends and colleagues. He reiterates that he is able to take breaks due to an extremely proficient team which includes his sons as well as his elder brother Harsh, who has played a big role in helping make Kanda Optical what it is today. “I feel blessed to have a very strong team consisting of sales, optometry and lab technicians that allow me to delegate work accordingly. This then allows me to

manage our company from a whole perspective versus micro managing each and every store or employee. My schedule is always changing as one day you’ll catch me at my lab assisting my staff with edging lenses, and then a couple hours later you may find me at one of my retail stores for a private sales appointment. I could not be more thrilled to get up start my day as I experience something new daily.” “I would also like to give special thanks to my Business Development Manager Goldy Dogra for being a valuable member of my team for the past 20 years.” When asked what he thinks the future has in store for his company, he states that the sky is the limit. “Our team is

always evolving and new opportunities get presented to us on a daily basis. Speaking humbly, we are honoured to be preferred vendors for all the amazing brands that we carry. Brands that hold very tight exclusivity within the industry trust our company to represent them to the fullest. We have specialists on our team that go through regular training pertaining to market updates and new technologies that we bring to our customers. Let it be as simple as engraving a name on a client’s lenses, or to adding diamonds or gemstones on any frames, we proudly offer all services. We can’t wait to show everyone what we have in store for the future! Written by: Saira Hayre Photo Credits: EI Photography

Q. Tell us about your background and what inspired you to get into the Insurance industry? A: My background is in Electrical Engineering from India and when I came to Canada with my wife many years ago, I worked many different jobs. When I came across an opportunity in the Insurance industry, I pursued it further and today, I’m proud to say that I’m a Branch Manager of my own Punjab Insurance location. I’m approaching my 10-year anniversary in this industry and I have really enjoyed this journey of running my own business. My team and I have met amazing clients along the way!

we are naturally accustomed to all being together under one roof. Life Insurance is also very popular as people are interested in taking the necessary steps to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Q. What is the biggest myth or misconception around obtaining insurance? A: I would say there are still some people out there who don’t necessarily see the value in getting Health Insurance or Life Insurance during early stages of life. Some may even view it as a waste of money because they are convinced nothing will go wrong that will require them to rely on insurance. From my Q. What is the most popular service experience over the years, I always tell my clients to view obtaining you provide and why? insurance as a 2nd pillar and A: Super Visa Insurance and Life Insurance are always in high demand. something to fall back on in case something goes wrong. It’s always For Super Visa Insurance, there are any people in Canada who miss their better to be safe than sorry. parents/grandparents back home so they are anxious to start the process Q. When it comes to Health insurance and Life insurance, do you and reunite with them. I take great find the community is more pride in assisting them with this. proactive in obtaining it? Or are I help bring families together and they still more reactive and only this is such an important part of the South Asian culture as many of us live start looking into it after something in multi-generational households, so significant happens in their lives?  (587) 707-7000

A: It’s actually 50:50 – I find the younger generation tends to be more proactive which is very interesting because it definitely makes a lot of sense to get these types of insurance coverage when you’re young and healthy. The premiums will cost much less and it’s easier to pay off over a set period of time - then you will be covered for life! I have seen some of my younger clients pay off their Life Insurance policies within 20 years so now they are very thankful because they have peace of mind. For others, they still tend to take it lightly however I did notice more people started looking into getting insurance when the COVID-19 pandemic started 2 years ago. It may have been the fear of the unknown that encouraged them to start taking precautions and look into getting insurance coverage right away. Q. Walk us through the process of how a potential client can connect with you to discuss next steps to secure Super Visa Insurance for their family members? A: Well, for the longest time we’ve been dealing with our clients mainly over the phone or Zoom/ Google meetings due to COVID-19. However, now that restrictions have been lifted, we are back to in-person meetings as an option. Once the client reaches out to me, we set-up a proper meeting so I can ask them some preliminary questions to get started. This helps me get a better idea of what their family members needs are. Then I give them the information on different policies available from 8-10 different companies so we can do a comparison and I can give them my recommendation on which is best suited for them. If all goes smoothly, we can get this process done quickly within 1 day.

Q. There has been a lot of concern around the welfare of international students as they navigate a new life in Canada. Why is it important for international students to obtain insurance? A: It’s important to note that international students can get up to 2 million dollars of insurance coverage while studying in Canada. Sometimes students will just go with $688 insurance coverage for the year but unfortunately that can be all used up in just one claim. For example, in case they have a dental emergency, we all know this can get very expensive so it’s better to plan ahead and secure the proper insurance coverage from the start. Also, the online claim process is so easy-to-use and the students can get reimbursed right away via cheque or email transfer. Some medical professionals even offer direct billing which is also very helpful and makes the process much easier for the students who already have so much on their plate with studies, working part-time jobs, etc. This is one less thing for them to stress about, so it’s totally worth it! Q. What is your 5-year plan in this industry? A: I currently have a team of 4 and we serve clients across Canada. We have plans to further expand so we are actively looking for more people who’d like to join our team as insurance brokers or advisors. I truly enjoy this industry because it allows me to fulfill my passion of helping people and their families in various aspects. Whether it’s bringing them back together and/or protecting them in case a life-changing event occurs, I will continue on this path as my network grows and I can bring more people on board to assist me with providing our clients with highest level customer service.  (587) 707-7000

However, without proper travel insurance, a dream holiday could lead to financial ruin or even worse.

• Some go overseas without ever having considered obtaining travel insurance, but the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade strongly advises that all Canadians take out travel insurance before going overseas, and with good reason. If things can go wrong, they probably will. And when they do, the last thing you want is enormous financial and emotional stress. Simply stated, travellers who do not have travel insurance can be personally liable for medical claims incurred overseas and these costs can financially ruin them! TRAVEL INSURANCE • There have even been instances where Canadian families have been forced to rely on their superannuation funds or in some cases sell their homes in order to raise the money to bring their loved ones home - all because they failed to purchase travel insurance. • Despite these risks, many people still travel without travel insurance. • If you are planning to travel overseas, it is sensible to take an overseas travel medical insurance policy. The expenditures of medical treatment overseas can be very high. It is mandatory to buy an Overseas Travel Insurance if you want to attain visa while you are scheduled to travel to a few countries in the world. These countries insist on travel insurance cover before issuing a travel visa. Even if it is not mandatory to buy a travel insurance plan to other countries it would be a wise decision to protect you from unseen tragedies.
