FEATURED COURSES MODEL MAKING Instructor: Emily Hoogesteger Audience: The ideal student will have project concepts and ideas that they have worked on in other classes or independently that they would like to extend by exploring new methods of representing their work. Description: Develop, build, and photograph a model for your design portfolio. Students will work in the studio to find creative ways of representing their work as they experiment with scale and develop prototypes, working with a variety of materials, including cardboard, foam core, found materials, and more. Throughout the class, discussions will focus on craft and examine the question: “In the digital age, why make a model?” Students will look at the work of Buckminster Fuller, Arvind Gupta, Le Corbusier, Moshe Safdie, and James Turrell, among others, for inspiration. Note: This short format course is offered at a reduced tuition rate—$292.50, $263.50 for AIC members, and $219.50 for SAIC alumni.
FRAME LOOM WEAVING STUDIO: MULTI-LEVEL Instructor: Katie Vota Audience: Ideal students include weavers, textile artists, sculptors, and fashion designers, as well as those curious about everyday objects. Description: This course is designed for intermediate and advanced students with a knowledge of basic weaving techniques who now wish to focus on different weave structures, delve deep into the construction of fabric, and apply these skills to their artistic practice. Students will examine how textile histories can reinforce meaning, experiment with patterns including plain weave and twill, and tapestry techniques like image making and color blocking. Students can bring their own hand loom or build one under the guidance of the instructor on the first day of class. Note: Beginning students may also take this
BLOCK PRINTING WITHOUT A PRESS Instructor: Molly Colleen O’Connell Audience: The ideal student has a DIY mentality and is ready to learn how to carve linoleum blocks by hand and with a laser cutter.
course, provided they complete beginner projects at home in order to keep up with the curriculum.
“ Superb instructor. Knowledgeable, patient, personable, and encouraging.”
Description: Block Printing Without A Press is for students who are interested in learning how to make prints with linoleum blocks, but do not have access to a printmaking studio. This approach to block printing allows students to broaden their practice and remove their dependency on a studio space. This kind of adaptability will help students to be flexible in the spaces where they create work. Students
“ The instructor’s attention and expertise meant that the class, which covered a lot of ground, made sense, and students could [easily] follow.” —Student, The Repeated Image, taught by R. Barnes
will learn how to hand cut and print with linoleum blocks, as well as how to carve blocks with a laser cutter. Class discussions will focus on how the linocut process reinterprets students’ original images and whether it changes the idea behind the image. This process will allow students to experiment with their existing drawings, photographs, or designs.
