FEATURED COURSES CONTEMPORARY LEBANESE ART Thursdays, 6:00–9:00 p.m., February 7–April 11
Ever wandered through an art museum and been intrigued by the Islamic Art section? Why is there so much blue? Does Islam have a prohibition on representing human figures? What are artists in the Arab world up to today? How does contemporary art in the Arab world engage with themes of war, religion, political freedom and sexuality? Through the lens of a contemporary art hub, Beirut, we will explore these questions. Because of Lebanon’s location on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean, Lebanon’s fate seems to be always inextricably tied to the developments in the countries surrounding it. This, however, also makes it a rich place for culture. In the past few decades, Beirut has become one of the most important and exciting cities for Arab art today. We will consider works by Lebanese artists both in Lebanon and in the diaspora. Connections will be made to objects in the Art Institute of Chicago’s collections and students will be encouraged to incorporate elements of what they learn into their own artwork.
Instructor: Laurel Harig Originally from New York, Laurel Harig teaches Arabic and Middle East-related cultural classes for adult students at several institutions in the Chicago area. She has a MA in Islamic Studies/ Anthropology and Sociology of Religion from the Divinity School at the University of Chicago and a BA in Cross-Cultural Relations/ Arabic from Bard College. She has also studied Arabic literature at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and anthropology at the American University of Beirut,

EXPANDED PRINT Wednesdays, 6:00–9:00 p.m., February 6–April 10 This course introduces students to printmaking as a versatile tool for the interdisciplinary artist. Students will explore processes in monotype, relief, image transfer and basic screen printing, developing techniques for DIY printmaking that do not require access to a dedicated print studio. Experimental approaches to materials and installation will be supported and encouraged, with projects framed by discussions of the creative and critical potential of print within the broader field of contemporary art and visual culture. The class is suitable for artists of all disciplines, both with and without prior printmaking experience.
Instructor: Frances Lightbound Frances Lightbound works between print, sculpture and installation to examine divisions of space and systems of authority within built environments. Her work has been exhibited in venues in the US and UK, with upcoming exhibitions including Hyde Park Art Center and 6018|North (Chicago) and Blue Star Contemporary (San Antonio). Lightbound has completed residencies at Ox-Bow School of Art, Chicago Artists’ Coalition and the Studio Pavilion, Glasgow, UK, and in 2017 was named a Visual Arts Fellow by the Luminarts Cultural Foundation. She completed her MFA in Printmedia at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a BA (Hons) at Glasgow School of Art, UK.
PAINTING FOR DESIGNERS Thursdays, 6:00–9:00 p.m., February 6–April 10 This is a painting course with designers and Graphic and Interior Design Certificate students in mind. The goal will be to sidestep the pressures of traditional realistic representation in favor of employing visual perception tactics, psychology and strategy in addressing self-expressive goals, context, and audience. Students will study the formal elements of painting – color, shape, composition, illusion of depth, materiality, and dynamism—as methods that both evoke the expectations and history surrounding painting, and to craft and modulate viewer relationships. Students will work in water-based paint, mixed media and spatial design, and class exercises will be aesthetic puzzles to be solved with critical analysis and group discussions. Painting experience is not needed.
