Freedom to Explore Different Media One of the key things that distinguishes SAIC from other art and design schools is our belief that meaning and making are inseparable. That means you begin with an idea and choose the media that best helps you realize your vision. Portfolio Preparation — A Head Start Not only will you receive portfolio feedback from your instructors and fellow students, you have the opportunity to meet with our undergraduate degree program admission counselors to receive one-onone advice about constructing a portfolio that best represents you. They look at thousands of portfolios and can provide you with expert advice! Students entering their senior year who successfully complete the program receive the following: • Portfolio requirement for SAIC undergraduate admission waived • Fee waiver for SAIC’s application via the Common Application • Priority consideration for merit scholarship

Rigorous Classroom Experience
Faculty
Like our undergraduate degree programs, you will be working in the studio all day – allowing you to really experience what it is like to be a practicing artist or designer. Classes meet from 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. And of course, there is time for lunch and breaks!
SAIC is known for its faculty, and many of our ECP Summer Institute instructors also teach in the undergraduate degree program. Our instructors are teaching artists, designers, writers, and scholars, who are passionate about art making and will challenge you to think, question, and discover.
Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., you will be engaged in exciting workshops designed to help you gain new skills and explore your ideas.

JUST A SAMPLE VISIT saic.edu/ecpsi for a full listing 3D Animation Students approach 3D animation through experimental artistic processes, moving beyond commercial animation and video game design into 4D explorations. They navigate Maya software and use basic modeling, lighting, texturing, rendering, and audio editing to create animations that manipulate light and shadow, form, rhythm, color, proportion, and volume.
Alternative Comics and Graphic Novels Students produce portfolio-quality projects concentrating on narrative structure, content, text and image. The course introduces a variety of illustrative approaches, such as writing, storyboarding, penciling, inking/coloring, and prepress preparations with a diverse exploration of materials including pencil, pen, ink, and collage.
Architecture This exciting course allows students to create proposals driven by their own interests in spaces, buildings, sculptures and even future monuments – imagine it, build it! Students will be immersed in the skills necessary to architecture – 2D sketching and technical drawing, 3D physical modeling, and developing 2D portfolioquality design boards. Expect to learn about the impact other disciplines have on contemporary architecture, and gain inspiration by exploring the works of artists, architects, and writers such as Andy Goldsworthy, Santiago Calatrava, Peter Eisenman, and Anthony Vidler.
Art and Street Culture What are the differences and similarities between fine art, graffiti art, and street art? Working in SAIC’s studios and public spaces, students have the opportunity to create their own individual portfolio-quality works in addition to a collaborative mural located in downtown Chicago.

Through drawing, modeling, and rapid prototyping, students learn how design decisions are made and create projects using hand drafting techniques, 3D modeling software (Rhino), laser cutting, 3D printing, and the Adobe Creative Suite. Presentations from visiting designers and field trips to the Art Institute of Chicago’s design wing and SAIC’s technology resource centers supplement the studio experience.
OF OUR COURSES… Digital Photography Students study manual camera techniques, lighting, digital workflow and output, and create high quality prints using Adobe Bridge, Photoshop software, Canon inkjet printers, and high-resolution laser printers. Coursework includes visits to the Art Institute of Chicago’s world-renowned photographic print study room.
Drawing: Urban Landscape From using the landscape itself as a medium to abstraction in space to inventing new landscapes through collage, students build skills in form, shape, line, perspective, and composition while exploring Chicago and interpreting the environment in unique ways. With a shared emphasis on traditional and non-traditional drawing techniques, students may experiment with a variety of wet and dry materials, which may include charcoal, pastels, ink, collage, and water-based paints. The course covers the history of landscape drawing in addition to how contemporary artists approach and depict the urban environment.
Experimental Drawing While building on technical abilities, students experiment with media (black and white, color, wet and dry), scale, arrangement, and presentation/installation and consider aesthetic design decisions, materials selection, and conceptual concerns during the creative process. Field trips to the Art Institute of Chicago, artist presentations, and discussions focusing on the work of significant historic and contemporary artists supplement the studio experience.
Fashion/Body/Garment: At the Edge Do fashion and contemporary art meet at the cutting edge of our culture? Experiment with presentation and process, work individually and collaboratively, engage in research, build a collection, and explore our Art Institute of Chicago, Fashion Resource Center and other resources available in Chicago. You have the opportunity to share your work with the public through installations, performances, or social media. Elevate your work — rethink the medium!
Figure Painting Working from direct observation of the nude model, students build oil painting skills with an emphasis on both traditional and nontraditional painting processes and materials including water-based
paint, collage, and mixed media, investigating personal ideas and concepts while developing a series of portfolio-quality paintings. Field trips to the Art Institute of Chicago and artist presentations supplement the studio experience.
Material Manipulation Alter, enrich and manipulate existing materials and objects using soft-sculpture building, stitching, cutting, dyeing, wrapping, printing, stenciling, paper manipulation, and layering in combination with waxes, adhesives, and collage. Projects range from fabric sculptures to embellished clothing to altered objects to layered reliefs and beyond. Trips to the Art Institute of Chicago, thrift stores, and local galleries/studios, artist presentations, and group critiques enhance the studio experience.
Video: Artist as Storyteller Using hand-held cameras, audio and lighting equipment, and video editing software (Adobe Premiere, After Effects), students use video to tell a story, looking to contemporary artists who use the medium in unique and innovative ways. Developing technical skills and using their own distinctive innovations, students shoot, edit, perform in, and produce collaborative and/or individual short videos. Trips to the Art Institute of Chicago and access to SAIC’s Video Data Bank supplement studio coursework.
Visual Communication Design Students explore the elements and principles of graphic design to create portfolio-quality works exploring symbols, logos, typography, layout, image and text integration, and sequential design. Using software like Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop and working with high quality digital printers, students also learn how to look at and evaluate products, graphics, architecture, and more.
Writer’s Studio In this intensive, interdisciplinary writing course, students improve their writing skills while pushing their creative limits. Designed for those who want to investigate writing through experimentation with style, format, and media, students explore the possibilities of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and hybrid practices. Through traditional and unconventional forms of writing, students develop their own voice and vision, express ideas in new ways, and give their writing a new creative edge. Past work from this course has included text-as-image, drawings, performance art, and sculptural projects.

ON-CAMPUS HOUSING On-campus housing is available at SAIC’s recently renovated Jones Hall, conveniently located a few blocks from the academic facilities. Living on campus is not required but strongly recommended for easy access to classrooms and studios, engaging with other students, and partaking in residence life activities. Jones Hall features: • Double and triple occupancy apartment-style rooms • Private baths • Kitchenettes with full-size refrigerators, cook-top, and microwave • Wireless internet • Private closets and ample storage space • 24-hour controlled access security • In-hall Residence Director • Summer Residence Advisor on each floor • In-building laundry What you should provide: • Linens, towels, pillows, blankets, and alarm clocks. If you are taking consecutive sessions, we don’t require you to move out of the residence hall. Thought you should know!
SAIC MEAL PLAN AND DINING SERVICES The SAIC meal plan, required for all residence hall students, provides approximately 10 meals per week. The meal plan is a declining balance that gives you the ability to choose a full meal or grab a quick bite. Dining facilities are located in both the LeRoy Neiman Center and the Columbus Drive building. You can cook in your rooms, as long as you bring your own cooking supplies (including pots), and trips are planned by residence hall staff to take you to area grocery shops and places to eat.

SAIC’s Museum It was faculty at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago who founded the Art Institute of Chicago’s museum as a teaching resource for its students. Today, the Art Institute of Chicago is the world’s third largest collection of art in the world, and an integral part of the education of every SAIC student. As an ECPSI student, you have free access to the museum’s collections — nearly 300,000 pieces of art in the permanent collection. Google images, step aside! At the museum, you’ll see: • The incredible color variations in a Van Gogh portrait • Picasso’s works on paper that are too light sensitive to be on display for the public • Rembrandt paintings and drawings • Site specific sculpture • Fiber art designed and executed by Lenore Tawney • Diane Arbus’ famous Identical Twins, Roselle, New Jersey

THE RULES AND REGS Registration Opens

To be considered for merit scholarship, you must have completed your registration and the following:

1. C reate a SlideRoom account at saicscholarships.slideroom.com. 2. Load six to 10 images of your best artwork in the ECP SI portfolio category. 3. C heck the “Applying for a merit scholarship” box on Registration Form-1. Artwork may be in any medium, regardless of class choice. Creative writing merit scholarship submissions may be imported in SlideRoom as PDFs. There is no separate merit scholarship application form. Artwork is only required for merit scholarship consideration, NOT admission into the program.
Applying for Need-Based Financial Aid In order to apply for financial aid, you must be a US resident and submit the following: 1) All of your registration materials including $100 nonrefundable tuition deposit 2) Financial documentation must include a copy of Form 1040 from the family’s most recent tax return (the first two pages). If you are unable to submit these documents, please contact us at cs@saic.edu.

Cancellations and Changes Continuing Studies reserves the right to cancel or alter the fees, schedule, or staffing of courses when circumstances warrant. If a cancellation or change is necessary, students will be notified prior to the first class, and students enrolled in cancelled courses will have the option of taking another class or receiving a full refund.

Residence Hall Supervision Curfew is strictly enforced: 10:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Students must be in the building and signed in each night for curfew. Students violating curfew are subject to disciplinary action that may lead to dismissal from the program.

ARTICard All ECPSI students receive an ARTICard, SAIC’s official ID card, which is to be carried at all times and must be shown to access all campus buildings. The ARTICard gives students free admission to the Art Institute and discounts at the Art Institute Museum Shop and nearby art supply stores. The ARTICard also functions as a debit card and can be used to purchase art supplies and pay for food in SAIC cafeterias and vending machines.
