adoption

In the market for a new best friend? We are big supporters of adopting not shopping. Hong Kong has a range of charities which help to rehome abandoned animals, Nicole Slater reports.

SPCA The SPCA is probably the best place to start if you’re thinking about adopting. The society rehomes around 1,000 cats, 700 dogs and 300 hamsters each year, as well as other animals such as chinchillas, rabbits, birds and reptiles. Four SPCA centres across Hong Kong provide adoption services, they are based in Wan Chai, Mong Kok, Ho Man Tin and Sai Kung. Expect at least one interview and you will be asked to prove you can provide a suitable home for your prospective pet. There is also a fee, currently

expect to pay $200 to $1,500 depending on the animal, plus an additional membership fee of $170. Consider fostering an animal if you’re not sure you’re ready to adopt. spca.org.hk

Kirsten’s Zoo Kirsten’s Zoo is a non-profit animal adoption organisation. Its services are primarily catered towards cats and dogs but the charity also occasionally rehomes rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and other exotics. Adoption events are held regularly on Hong Kong Island.

Can’t own a pet? Volunteer instead Many animal-lovers simply don’t have the space or time to care for a pet full-time. Not to worry, there are plenty of Hong Kong charities who offer volunteer opportunities based on your schedule. Options include, dog walking with Hong Kong Dog Rescue or Sai Kung Stray Friends.

SPCA

A cat adoption package which includes microchipping, a desex operation, two vaccinations; worming and a full health check costs $1,500. The equivalent package for dogs costs $2,500 and adoption packages for smaller animals are available on request. kirstenszoo.com

Sai Kung Stray Friends Foundation

Kirsten's Zoo

Dog charity Sai Kung Stray Friends Foundation has had a long standing reputation in the local community. The current chairman Narelle Pamuk has been running the charity for more than 12 years with the help of Kennel Manager Kathy and a team of regular volunteers. The charity aims to rescue and desex dogs and give them a second chance at finding a forever home. Their facility provides a clean, safe and loving home to over 100 dogs. Schools, groups and companies are welcome to visit the facility for a hands-on experience. Visit the kennels and meet the beautiful dogs at, 151 Tai Lam Wu, New Territories, Sai Kung. adoption

Hong Kong Dog Rescue Based in Ap Lei Chau and Tai Po, Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR) has been finding homes for some of the city’s most loveable hounds since 2003. The charity was originally founded by Lamma resident Sally Andersen with the aim of saving abandoned dogs from the government’s animal management centres, which euthanise around 7,000 dogs each year. All dogs taken in by HKDR are health-checked and vaccinated. hongkongdogrescue.com

The Hong Kong Reptile & Amphibian Society The more unusual pets of Hong Kong tend to not get much of a look in. The Hong Kong Reptile & Amphibian Society is a local non-profit program dedicated to rehoming reptiles such as snakes and turtles as well as birds and fish. To find out more visit, hkras.org

Catherine’s Puppies A Sai Kung-based shelter founded by Sai Kung resident of ten years, Catherine Lumsden. Catherine has devoted her time to taking in and caring for abandoned puppies and dogs around the town before helping them to find a home when they are fit and healthy. Since starting in 2015, Catherine’s Puppies has helped to rehome over 800 dogs. The shelter also

Catherine's Puppies

provides food and helps to desex stray dogs. If you are interested in adopting or to arrange a visit, call 6799 7530. Facebook: Catherines Puppies

Hong Kong Cats After a spate of finding abandoned kittens in rubbish bins around Sai Kung town centre, Emily Allington officially started Hong Kong Cats in order to help rehome local cats. What started as a Facebook group in 2014 grew into a much larger organisation and Emily also joined SPCA's cat colony care programme which helps

to desex and vaccinate cats. Hong Kong Cats is now a well-known charity which places many cats and kittens in foster homes across Hong Kong. If you are interested in adopting a cat, or to find out more visit hongkongcats.org

Regulations • •

It is illegal to own an unlicensed dog that is more than five months old. Dogs must be vaccinated against rabies, microchipped and licensed. Most veterinary clinics as well as the SPCA offer these services. A dog license is valid for three years and can be renewed by re-vaccinating the dog against rabies. Any change in ownership or address should be reported to the (AFCD) within five days. Both dogs and cats should be vaccinated as recommended by a registered veterinary surgeon. You can be fined if your dog is found fouling in a public place. Use specific collection bins for dog waste. Dogs are allowed in all of Hong Kong’s country parks. Even large dogs are allowed to run freely off the lead within the confines of the country park. Dogs are not allowed on any gazetted beach (this basically means any beach with a lifeguard.)

on the move

Trans-paw-ting your pet Expats are citizens of the world, and so are their pets. Nicole Slater summarises all you need to know about importing and exporting your pet Dogs on a plane

credit: Vistajet

Mat Gallagher recently relocated from Hong Kong to the USA with his 11-yearold dachshund Jai Jai in tow. He opted to go it alone, without the help of a petrelocation agent, here’s his experience:

Importing

You must apply for a special permit from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD; afcd.gov.hk) in order to bring your animal to Hong Kong. The permit currently costs $432 for each cat or dog and slightly less for reptiles. It takes at least five working days for the government to issue the permit, and this must be used within six months. You may be asked to submit proof that your pet has recently received health checks, vaccinations and blood tests as part of the application. Be warned: if you fail to acquire a permit, your pet could face four months in government quarantine, or could even be sent back to your country of origin.

Exporting

Make a plan to export your pet way in advance of your leaving date, as you may find some countries require you to undertake lengthy procedures. A pet relocation agent can be costly but will often provide peace of mind that the sometimes very complicated process will run smoothly. There are many factors to consider, in particular choosing the right cargo crate for your animal. Also, bear in mind that some airlines have restrictions on which breeds they will transport. Some pet relocation agents which come recommended by expats include:

Pet Export Vet Hong Kong’s only IPATA-registered veterinary owned pet relocation company, founded by Dr

Gerry Pahl. Pet Export Vet organises your pet’s flight, FOR LESS takes care of all documentation, STRESS health checks and treatments needed to fly. What’s more, they come to you causing minimal disruption in the lead up to your move. petexportvet.com

Vistajet

Private jet operator Vistajet FOR has recently launched a new LUXUR Y pet travel programme which aims to make flying a luxury experience for both owner and pet. Pets can fly in-cabin with their owners and are offered a range of amenities including care kits, sleep mats and balanced menus. Vistajet also offer their clients travel advice as well as fear of flying courses for both two and four-legged flyers. vistajet.com

Kennel Van Dego

FOR Founded in 1981, Kennel Van Dego is one of the largest MORE boarding establishments SPACE in Hong Kong. They offer a range of services including pet boarding, training, importation and exportation. The kennels let you customize your dog's stay with added treatments and play time on offer to make sure your dog is never out of routine. They also offer a climate controlled cattery service for those feisty felines. No. 1-3 Shek Hang Village, Yan Yee Road, Sai Kung. kennelvandego.com

If you really want to test your sanity, try moving countries with a pet. When Googling solutions, the advice is a resounding chorus of specialist pet relocation agents. These companies promise a hassle-free solution for a significant fee, with prices ranging from $30,000 to $50,000. After some research, I was fairly confident I could arrange everything myself, and save a lot of money in the process. And I did. Having a small, and somewhat mature, dog, I was keen to keep him with me in the cabin. The website Bring Fido is a great resource for checking individual airline requirements. Only a certain number of pets are allowed on each flight, so bookings must be made over the phone to ensure there is space. The documents that are required to fly vary depending on your destination. Travelling to either the UK or Australia is more complex, while European destinations and North America is relatively easy. Paperwork, a health check and microchip are required. Once your ticket is booked and your documents are in order, the final challenge is the journey. Our journey took 20 hours and I’m happy to report that we both survived! When you land you must declare that you are bringing in a live animal into the country. With the paperwork in order, and customs cleared that’s it. We are enjoying our new home in Chicago, it’s a very dog-friendly city!

Did you know? Hong Kong public transport isn’t particularly animal-friendly. Animals aren’t allowed on franchised buses and only guide dogs are allowed on the MTR. Taxis will take pets for a charge of $5 for each animal.

check up time Pets Central veterinarian Dr Pauline Taylor advises those thinking about adoption: If you are considering getting a pet, you should ask yourself two basic questions: 1. Have you enough time for a pet in your day-to-day life? Pets need to be walked, they need exercise, playtime, bathtime, feeding, hair combing and so on. They need this for their entire lives. 2. Can you afford a pet? Expenses include food, regular vaccination and parasite prevention and other unforeseen medical bills. If you answered yes to both questions, I would advise you to go ahead and rescue a pet. There are many homeless animals waiting to be adopted. If you choose carefully to suit your family and lifestyle, not only will you help a pet find a loving home, you will also get a lifelong companion.

Pet First Aid tips from St. John Ambulance Association “First Aid educated owners can spot not only the difference between temporary and permanent disability but that between life and death.” - Hong Kong St. John Ambulance Association Aside from avoiding your pet getting into dangerous situations (not always easy!), the most effective way to prevent accidents and emergencies is to be aware of any behavioural changes or changes in their vital signs. As a pet owner, it’s important to make sure you have a thorough understanding of your furry friend’s basic anatomy and what their normal vital signs should be. The quicker you spot a change, the faster your loved one can receive care whether it’s immediate first aid or a quick trip to the vets, helping to prevent any lifethreatening conditions. The most common emergency scenarios among pets are urinary, reproductive, neonatal and cardiovascular emergencies. With the example of cardiovascular emergencies, if pets are unconscious, not breathing and pulseless, then they are in cardiopulmonary arrest. Every second counts so starting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is crucial before travelling to a vet. If ever in doubt of your pet’s health, seek help from a vet as soon as possible. stjohn.org.hk

It’s a dog’s life

pampered pooches

Dogs from all walks of life tell Nicole Slater why they love calling Hong Kong home THE LAP OF LUXURY

What's an average day for you?

Sugar is a 12-year-old Chinese Mutt owned by Goods of Desire founder, Douglas Young.

I sleep at the bottom of my master’s bed, around 6am I wake him up so he can take me out for our morning walk. Once Douglas has made his breakfast, we eat together in the kitchen before he goes off to work. I spend the day playing and walking with my helper or catching up on some sleep. I can’t wait for my master to get home from work and I always make sure I’m ready and waiting to greet him at the front door. We often watch TV together and then it’s bed!

What’s your favourite treat? I like a challenge so whatever Douglas throws I’ll fetch!

What are your quirky characteristics?

Sugar

I’m much more of a stay at home type of dog, outside is full of dirt and noise. Why would you want to go there? I especially hate when it rains, if there’s any chance I'll get my paws wet then it's a no go for me!

Who do you love most in the world?

How is your pet really feeling? Animal communication is a support system for pet owners who aren't confident they are doing the right thing. By using a photograph and your pets name, Helen Mahtani can communicate with your furry friend over a 45-minute meditation session. During the session she notes down any impressions she receives from the animal and emails them to the owners before setting up a time to meet. Message Helen on Instagram @animalwhisperer555 or call 96110701 for a reading.

My master is the best

Douglas, of course!

THE INSTA-FAMOUS Sum Sum is a 10-month-old Yorkshire Terrier owned by YouTube star, Jlou.

What's an average day for you?

around the house, Mummy always calls it a toy but I know it’s real! Mummy sometimes works from home, which means I get all the attention, apparently I'm distracting her but I know that I’m adorable.

I spend most of the day chasing my rat

What’s your favourite treat? Being on Instagram means I have to make sure I'm in the best possible shape, so baby carrots are my go-to snack.

Do you have any quirky characteristics?

Sum Sum

I love to play hide and seek with Daddy’s socks, and I must say I'm pretty good at it! I’ve recently changed my tactic from grabbing the socks and running to sneaking past and hiding under the sofa in wait.

Who do you love most in the world?

I'm not camera shy

I couldn’t possibly choose! But when Mummy and Daddy are home together, I get double the cuddles!

Pet Guide | 13

pampered pooches THE RESCUED PUPS Millie and Fudge are five-year-old mongrels owned by editor, Nicole Slater

What's an average day for you? We like to lounge around the house until early afternoon when we’ll get to take a trip out in the car and run around Pak Tam Chung Family Trail. Once we’re back Mummy and Daddy open the biscuit jar so we hang around at their feet waiting for something to drop even if it’s just a crumb!

What’s your favourite treat? Rice - everytime we hear the rice cooker steam we jump for joy!

Do you have any quirky characteristics? We’re always on the lookout for empty plates. The moment we hear them being scrapped we tilt our heads to the side, our owners think its cute and always give us leftovers.

Who’s the person you love most in the world? We're so grateful to be adopted, we love everyone who helped us!

Fudge

Millie

Rescued from Sai Kung Stray Friends

THE HARD WORKER Dau Miu is a five-month-old Shiba Inu owned by marketing executive Isamonia Chui

What's an average day for you? I wake up at 8am every day, to make sure I'm not late for work! I have a quick breakfast and play with my toys then it’s straight to the office. I get lots of attention there but I try hard not to be too distracting. After a long morning of hard work Mummy takes me out for lunch in her bag, I have to be quiet and on my best behaviour! After work I go home and see all my family, before heading to bed so I'm fresh for work the next day.

What’s your favourite treat? I love cheese! Who doesn’t?! I’m not allowed to have it all the time, but when I’m being extra good Mummy gives me some.

What are your quirky characteristics? I’ve worked out a little trick I can play against Mummy. Everytime I eat, I try my best not to go to the toilet until she puts me in my cage. That way I get to spend more time out of my cage playing while she cleans up! Sneaky sneaky.

u i M u Da Who do you love most in the world? My Mummy of course! But also all my coworkers at Hong Kong Living!

walkies Dragon’s Back Distance: 8.5 km Duration: 3 hours Woof friendly: This iconic Hong Kong hike is a must for all residents, visitors and dogs! The Dragon’s Back gets its unique and powerful name from its hilltop undulations, spanning between Wan Cham Shan and Shek O Peak; perfect for wearing your dog out. The hike offers spectacular views of the Shek O mansions, beautiful beaches and the glistening South China Sea and can be tackled anytime of day. With the finishing point at Tai Long Wan, better known as Big Wave Bay, you can cool off and relax before heading home. Don’t forget to pack your swimsuit!

Three Fathoms Cove Distance: 12.1km Duration: 4.5 hours Woof friendly: The hike begins at Pak Sha O Youth hostel, with historic sites along the way, including a restored Hakka village that feels lost in time. Starting off slowly the hike becomes a bit more challenging upon reaching a path to Sham Chung, with dirt trailing replacing the concrete paths and streams gushing down. Just be careful of the wild dogs. Once you reach Sham Chung you’ll be greeted with open grassland and a golf course, perfect for picnics. Cross the meadow and follow the concrete path towards the pier, where a ferry calls twice a day on its way to Ma Liu Shui or Wong Shek Pier. Dogs must have a muzzle on to ride the ferry.

walkies Twin Peaks and Violet Hill Distance: 4.8km Duration: 2-3 hours Woof friendly: If your furry friend likes a challenge then Twin Peaks and Violet Hill is the hike for you. This workout packs a serious punch and is known as the Terrible Twins for its seemingly neverending series of steps (over 1,000 actually). We strongly advise doing the hike this way round (from Parkview to Stanley). As when you’re halfway up the first peak, the visions of Stanley’s food, drink and gentle ocean breeze will keep you going. The first peak is much harder than the second, so make sure you pack enough water (and snacks!) for yourself and your furry best friend. You begin the hike with an ascent up Violet Hill - barely a warm up for what’s to come.

Tai Long Wan (Sai Wan Beach) Time: 40 minutes Woof friendly: Considered one of the most beautiful places in Hong Kong, this secluded spot requires a hike through Sai Kung East Country Park to reach its powdery sand and clear waters, where dogs are allowed to run around. Sai Wan is one of four beaches that make up Tai Long Wan Bay, and is a popular surfing and overnight camping spot. Alternatively you can take a boat ticket back to Sai Kung from one of the restaurants. Dogs can legally be off the lead in all country parks.
