Sai Kung Cub Scouts farewell to retiring Akela and Grizzly Caps off and a deep bow to Sai Kung Cub Scout leaders Clare “Akela” Fisher and Ellen “Grizzly” Hobson, who are retiring after six years leading Sai Kung’s scout group. To mark their departure a traditional “Wolf Howl’’ was held at twilight by the flagpole overlooking Hebe Haven. A new leadership team continues the work: including Kathy Brewin, Gill Prior, Linsey Irvine and Catalina Abel, Shermon Joy, Ged Finlay, Aaron Goach, Sean Prior, Winnie Chan and Delian Gaskill. Sai Kung’s 299th East Kowloon scouting group was established way back on 1st November 1979. The group provides weekly outdoor adventuring and hall activities for youth members aged from seven to seventeen years old: 20 Beavers, 28 Cub Scouts and 40 Scouts. It is based at the Pak Sha Wan scout centre. The volunteer-run scout group has flourished over the years, leading activities ranging from camps, climbing trips, beach clean up’s, trail hike support and other community service as well as international expeditions to far flung places such as Nepal and the Lake District. “Nothing beats toasting smores over an open fire in Sai Kung’s great outdoors!” said outgoing group scout leader, Ellen “Grizzly” Hobson. “Scouting embraces outdoor activities, physical pursuits, endurance, confidence, kindness, and

an all-important service to the community.” For membership enquiries, contact Winnie Chan at 299membership@gmail.com

$2.5m Yim Tin Tse conservation project goes God’s House ahead What was life like on Yim Tin Tse island? The Rural Conservation Funds is giving $2,600,000 to Chinese U researchers to find out. The money will be spent on amassing records, maps and materials provided by the villagers and locals with researchers hoping to build up a clear picture of what life was like on the tiny island. The

grant is another victory for village head, Colin Chan, who has been working since 1998 to turn his birthplace from an abandoned island into a “living museum”. The project starts Jan 1 2022. Wanna take a look yourself? Catch a ferry to Yim Tin Tsai from Sai Kung waterfront. It’s HK$60 return.

Or failing that, you can now buy Cruising Hong Kong, the definitive coffee table book by Sai Kung’s very own Guy Nowell. The lavishly-illustrated book is packed with practical information on destinations, regulations, anchorages, history, geology and much, much more. It is the first guide book to the watery delights of the Hong Kong coastline since Richard Hownam-Meek’s ‘Afloat in Hong Kong’, published more than 40 years ago. “We sold out of the first edition,” said Guy, who runs Asia Yacht Press with Suzy Rayment. “We were still being asked for copies, so we thought we’d better go back to the printer!” The second edition includes more maps and more photographs. Cruising Hong Kong is presently available direct from the publishers (Asia Yacht Press +852 9680 7063, guy.nowell@asiayachtpress.com) and at RHKYC Shelter Cove, the RHKYC Ship Shop (Kellett Island), and Club Marina Cove. Doctor in the House Dr Genevieve Touzel, has taken over Sai Kung Animal hospital. Why did you do it Dr Gen? I love Sai Kung, and the opportunity to take over Sai Kung Animal Hospital, with its great reputation and team, was too good to miss.

Dawson set up his business, Sai Kung Handyman. I was nervous that the family would not love Sai Kung as much as I did but my fears were unfounded. We haven’t looked back.

What is your mission as a vet? To provide the very best care to beloved animals and their humans.

What makes you happy in Sai Kung? I love the community. In five years, I have made some great friends.

Why include humans? Dealing with an acute trauma or a chronic illness of pets can be very stressful. Part of my job role is to help ‘the humans’ too.

How did you become a vet? Aged seven, I was excited beyond words to own a mongrel pup. I loved him so much. I would sleep with him curled up in his basket, nuzzle him endlessly, I even ran away from home with him one day. Growing up, I would try to save every injured animal I could find, I was a regular attendee at various welfare events and protests and used to collect animals on long drives that were injured by the roadside. There was always roadkill in Australia and I was intent on checking the pouches of marsupials for any surviving orphans. I started volunteering at RSPCA in Australia at 12 years old and loved it. I only ever wanted to be a vet.

You ran the Sai Kung branch of SPCA for five years. How was that? Sai Kung is the pet capital of Hong Kong. Working at Sai Kung SPCA – in the bustling hub of Sai Kung – was wonderful and hectic and a great introduction to Hong Kong vet life. You have a strong following among Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay residents. Why? People come to me because they trust my advice. After 21 years of practice, I’m a competent and skilled surgeon and proficient in medicine and acupuncture. And I always say it like it is. I am an honest person. What can residents expect when they visit Sai Kung Animal hospital? Friendly faces, a team of animal lovers and perhaps a treat or two if they are lucky. Usually, we can fit your pet in for an urgent appointment the same day. We have an in-house laboratory, Xray and ultrasound facilities. We can diagnose and treat without delay.

Do you have any advice for young people who want to become a vet? Gain as much experience with animals as possible. I scrubbed outdoor cages every Sunday in the Australian Summer heat as a teenager. I volunteered at animal shelters, farms, private kennels and vet clinics on school holidays.

What else should wannabe vets know? Vet work is not always glamorous. We deal with faeces, maggots, blood and some pretty gruesome injuries. We work long hours. The first years After five years running Sai Kung’s SPCA, are tough and it is difficult to ‘switchDr Genevieve Touzel, has taken over Sai Kung Animal hospital. off’. Social media can be brutal, especially towards less experienced How did you wind up in Sai Kung? vets. Mental health problems are a huge issue in the industry. Senior inspector Ron Yung reports the latest and greatest It’s A Steal An attempted burglary took place at 5pm on September 4 at a house in Tui Min Hoi Village. After the perpetrator realised he had been spotted by residents, he ran off without entering the home. He was subsequently apprehended by the police and was found to be homeless, in possession of Viagra tablets and in search of food. He has since been charged.

Heat Sensitive A 48-year-old man was taken ill with heatstroke on September 11 while hiking with a friend on Jin Island. As he was unable to walk, his friend contacted the police and he was airlifted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. He subsequently made a full recovery.

Love Story A 20-year-old man was chatting with someone via an online dating app and agreed to meet her on August 28. After arriving at the Hang Hau MTR rendezvous spot, the man received a WhatsApp message, saying that he would have to pay HK$5,000 before the meeting. He duly bought HK$5,000 worth of online iTunes vouchers and sent them to his “date”. Unfortunately, she never showed up.

Too Good To Be True When an avid gamer aged 49 saw an advert for the hard-to-find PlayStation 5, he thought Christmas had come early. He contacted the advertiser who told him to pay an HK$800 deposit, which he did via AliPay. The PS5 and its seller never materialised. The case is still under investigation..

Job Related Beware scammers preying on the unemployed. A cold call claiming there was a job vacancy delivering mobile phones in Sau Mau Ping hit its mark. The man who got the call happened to be looking for work. He registered his interest and was told to pay HK$4,000 to secure the job, which he did via FPS. The job advertiser was subsequently uncontactable. The case is still under investigation.

Bank boss hiker found dead Rescue workers found the body of 59-yearold Shou Fugang, CEO of China Bank of Communications Insurance Company, at

Mount Hallowes in Sai Kung Country Park after he had been missing for five days. Hundreds of people had joined the search but efforts were complicated by torrential rain and hail stones. Chief inspector Kong Sze-wan said it was possible Shou accidentally fell down a slope and became separated from his phone. “There were scratches on his body and his legs were fractured,” Kong said. “But we found no suspicious wounds.”

What’s happening at sea Borrowed goods On August 27 a couple were riding on a jet ski near Tai Tau Chau fish farm when the jet ski collided with a fishing vessel. When police were called to the scene they discovered the couple had borrowed the jet ski without permission from the owner. Lightning causes tragedy A man kayaking around Green Egg Island was tragically struck by lightning on the afternoon of September 16. He had been kayaking with his wife when the bad weather hit and unfortunately was pronounced dead at the scene. Another jet ski incident On the afternoon of September 15, an male on an unlicensed jet ski collided with a pleasure boat. Marine police arrived at the scene and the driver was taken to Tseung Kwan O hospital in a conscious state.

Supermarket staff spotted a man stealing a bag of rice at 10pm on August 26. They raised the alarm and the shoplifter threw the rice to the floor and ran off. Although the police arrived on the scene, the man was long gone and a lack of CCTV meant he could not be identified or caught.

RIP Two men, both 25, were out hiking from Pak Lap to Pak Fu Shan on September 11 when they found a man lying unconscious beside the mountain path. The victim, aged 46, was airlifted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital where he subsequently passed away in the Intensive Care Unit. He had no underlying conditions but his death is not being treated as suspicious.

five minutes with

Vickie Hu Meet the owner of Ensemble Co-Creating Space, Sai Kung’s favourite venue for creatives comfortable setting. Children learn skills that last a lifetime. They make unique objects – things that speak to who the student is. The ultimate “wealth” is the priceless experience you have. You cannot buy this from a store. In our hi-tech world why does craft matter? In the hi-tech era craft becomes high tech too. Crafting is much easier. There are so many new tools that help the process and save time. You go online and download sewing patterns, embroidery patterns (we plug a USB into my embroidery machine), “guided cooking” invented by Thermomix makes cooking easy and fun. With all these tools and machines we spend less time on tedious work and more on creativity. You can see your “hand made” project finished in less time. We need to embrace hi-tech and go with the trend. Grandma would be amazed.

What gave you the idea to start a cocreating space? Sai Kung needed one. Before, local residents had to trek to Hong Kong or Kowloon for creative classes. Now they can come to Ensemble Co-creating Space. It’s easy, fun and there is a nice sense of community.. How did you come to find such a great space in the heart of Sai Kung? It was meant to be. I had a vision of a place with views of the ocean. Three months later I happened to pass by the shop. It was perfect. Can you share the names of some of your popular activities? So many: For adults, our sourdough class, Qipao making class and our free cooking demo with Thermomix is popular. Our consultation session with Dr Jiwoon, a Sai Kung based naturopathic doctor is often booked out. For kids, our sewing and cooking classes are very popular. Where do you find your teachers? I’m always on the lookout for people with a passion to teach and share. Often a teacher might reach out to me because they have a passion and a skill, and they want to share. Other times I find the teacher.

How do you spot a teacher? I met one of my sewing teachers at a flower arrangement workshop. She is a retired fashion designer and professional pattern maker. She never thought about teaching before. But, I helped her create a “make a dress in one day” workshop. Her classes are a big hit. And she loves this new dimension to her life. What makes a good teacher? A good teacher inspires. They make a complicated process simple. They understand each student is unique, and moves at their own speed. There is no good or bad… just improvement How do you help first time teachers? We give new teachers the tools to get started. We help them find students and structure their classes. How has the Pandemic changed your business? Summer used to be a quiet time for Sai Kung as many expat returned to their countries for long holidays. Now summer is busy, and we have many summer camps going on here. What’s in it for the students? Ensemble Coworking Space is a relaxed and

What do you love about Sai Kung? Most of the people called Sai Kung is Hong Kong’s back garden… people love Sai Kung for its scenery; its mountains, the sea and the fresh air. I love Sai Kung because of its people - it’s a place where west meets the east, where the big corporate CEO lives in a village where the locals live. People who live in Sai Kung have a more “relaxed” lifestyle, and things are less “formal” here and you know who your neighbors are, their kids name, helper’s name and dog’s name. Not often I see people come to my studio with high heels or expensive handbags. How can people get in touch with you? We have a physical location. Our studio is at the waterfront inside the Organic Warehouse shop, 112 Man Nin Street. It opens daily 9:30-7:30. We can also be reached by email: ensemble.saikung@gmail.com

Situated in Sai Kung town center, at the waterfront, Ensemble Co-Creating Space provides a place for rental and for likeminded creative souls to share their passion for crafting, cooking, sewing and caring for the earth. For more information visit: ensemblecocreatingspace.com

restaurant review

WM Hotel Restaurant Reviewed Peter Wood dons his Hedda Hopper disguise to check out brunch at the new WM Hotel. Earlier in August, the opening of the rather swanky WH Hotel caused a ripple of excitement in the Sai Kung community. I snuck down there for Saturday brunch with three friends to check out that F&B ocean view exposure. First impressions were good. The hotel snakes organically along the Sai Kung shoreline – a shining example of how contemporary design can blend into our landscape. I had chatted earlier in the month to designer Henry Chau of Aedas. He said; “The overall building form is actually driven by the scenic view of the Sai Kung seaview.” The three interconnected V-shaped hotel blocks also greatly increase the number of sea-facing hotel rooms. Apparently they are mostly booked out until January. So, well done Henry. The WM certainly looks great. The lobby allows one to breathe in the nearby sea air. The rooftop infinity pool surely must be the best in Hong Kong as it hugs the building. Windows pop with seamless views of the sea and the Sai Kung hills. You can see why it’s already a hit with city folk. Sadly, the only restaurant open was

18 | SAI KUNG

situated in the basement with a bland view of an empty rotunda. The beige décor, beige menu and beige roast lamb was also uninspiring. Perhaps it will be better after they get their liquor license. An art installation of wine bottles (for what other purpose did it pose?) teased us throughout our alcohol free meal. The service was haphazard. But perhaps that is just because the team is new. Our 2 vegetarians had to explain that

prosciutto and shrimp were not vegetarian. Overall the ambience is very hotel breakfast and doesn’t deliver on the funky promise of the building. What the WM needs is an executive chef to make the restaurant a “go to” venue. Contemporary all day dim sum, such as Lung King Heen at the Four Seasons, or Dim Sum Library in Pacific Place spring to mind.

dining news

Dining News Singaling gets its liquor licence back Sing, Sai Kung’s most popular restaurateur*, said he got his liquor licence back Tuesday (31/8). Singaling, which he runs with partner Wai-ling, is now fully back in business. This is good news for imbibers in town because Singaling offers the best drinks deal Monday through Thursday – two for the price of one. Sing says “Come on down”. The liquor licence was lost temporarily because of a bureaucratic mix up. *Readers of Sai Kung Magazine voted Sing the town’s most popular restaurateur several times. It’s because Sing makes an effort to remember everyone’s name and treats all of us as friends and you know he’s genuine. Po Tung Rd, Sai Kung. singalings.com

Sustainable Microgreens Tiny acres is a joint venture between 2 Sai Kung families growing Microgreens sustainably. The initial idea behind the business was hatched during the Covid lockdown to teach our children where food came from, and what was required to grow vegetables. With space at a premium in Hong Kong we had to think small, and came across Microgreens. As the name suggests they are small, but boy do they pack a bunch! Microgreens are packed with up to 40 times more nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants than their mature plant, not that we tell our kids. Our crops are grown in a climate controlled environment, free of pesticides and chemicals. They are a fun and exciting way to spruce up salads, sandwiches and soups, or you can even add them to smoothies.

Meet the Leung family in Tseung Kwan O

Hades second birthday party

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Ming and Rebacca have always loved the city for its dynamic energy. A few years ago, they decided to settle down and start a family in the city they grew up in. Named after a dear family friend, Hades was born in 2019 and is two years old. He is currently attending playgroups during the weekends, where he would interact with other children his age. Above all, Ming and Rebacca want Hades to have a happy and fulfilling childhood. They have begun to search for a school that is suitable for their firstborn. “We would like him to find a school where he could make a lot of friends and learn happily – a school that supports students to explore the world and inspire them to be the best version of themselves,” says Ming. Currently working as a Legal Executive Manager, Ming describes himself as a typical man in Hong Kong who enjoys playing tennis and spending time with his family on weekends. Meanwhile, Rebacca was a restaurant owner who enjoyed being a boss and making her own decisions. After Hades came into the couple’s life, however, she gained a new Family fun at Stage Right! Theatre

family perspective. “Anyone could be a boss but only one person in the world can be Hades’s mum,” she says. She decided that she didn’t want to miss any milestones in Hades’ life. So, she gave up being a businesswoman and became a full-time mum. “As a husband and father, I truly appreciate her sacrifices for the family. I don’t think I could do it myself,” comments Ming, whose admiration for his wife radiates. As parents, the couple only hopes for the best for their child. “We want our son to be healthy, happy and grow into a kind, loving

and responsible person who would give back to society,” says Ming. “We do not want to put too much pressure on Hades. We would like him to have a happy childhood and we will try our best to support him in exploring all the options until he finds his passion.” When asked what he thinks Hong Kong will look like when Hades is 22 years old, Ming says: “I don’t really know what Hong Kong will look like when Hades is 22 years old. I don’t really know what Hong Kong will look like when Hades is five years old. As human beings, there’s not much we can control. For me, I will just do my best every day and treasure what I have.”

Sai Kung resident Polly McGovern has launched Fore Women, a local initiative to introduce more women to golf, one clinic at a time. “I took up golf four years ago when my children started lessons and soon realised that there was a big gap in the market,” says Polly, who now has an impressive handicap of 24. “ I couldn’t find any other women to play golf with! Women and girls are hugely underrepresented in Hong Kong and the potential for growth is enormous.” Fore Women currently has over 70 members. It costs HK$1,000 a year to join and

has weekly and monthly meets in different courses and practice venues around Hong Kong. “We welcome novice and seasoned players into an accessible and approachable arena. We had 70 players sign up in one week and there are so many more women out there who want to play golf. Most just don’t know how to do it in Hong Kong.” Fore Women is a signatory to the R&A Women in Golf Charter, a global movement to foster a more inclusive culture within golf around the world and enable more women and girls to play the sport. Through on-course play, tournaments and structured clinics, Fore Women is providing a social, fun and welcoming

environment in which to learn and develop. Polly, a video director and media professional, is well known for her work championing the rights of Hong Kong refugees. “We’re on a mission to change the way women perceive golf in Hong Kong. We want to grow the game through passion,” says Polly. For more information about FORE WOMEN Golf Society, please go to: fore-forewomenregistration.golfgenius.com

Set them free

The Buddhists who release Sai Kung’s seafood. Among the thousands of visitors who come to Sai Kung for the seafood, one group stands apart. Most Tuesdays for the past 18 years, Ms Tam and her friends have bought fish and crustacea from the waterfront restaurants not to eat, but to set them free.

Why do you free the fish? Ms T: “Life release” is a Buddhist tradition to save animals that are destined to be killed. It’s the gift of life. Many people believe it provides health benefits; releasing a fish into the sea provides the liberator with a sense of peace and joy because they can sense the creature’s happiness. How do you practice this in Sai Kung? Ms T: We have a regular boatman who gets sea creatures from a wholesaler and places them in tanks on board his boat. Wethen go out to sea to find suitable areas where the creatures can be released. This is important because different fish and crustaceans require different habitats. There is no point giving a creature its freedom if it is going to die because it has been released into a hostile environment.Until last year we worried commercial fishing trawlers would catch creatures we released but now there is a ban on trawling in Hong Kong waters. What kind of creatures do you release? Ms T: It depends on the season and what creatures are available, but we release many kinds of fish, crabs, squid, starfish and sea cucumber.

32 | SAI KUNG

How much does it cost? Ms T: As a group we pool our resources – we practice life release often and seafood is expensive – we spend about $1000 to $2,000 on each occasion.

Ask a vet

Dr Pauline Taylor answers your questions on fleas and flea prevention What are some signs I should look for if my pet has fleas? If your dog appears restless and seems to be shaking its head and scratching a lot especially using their hind legs to scratch along their abdomen, fleas should be considered. They are blood sucking parasites that carry and pass on diseases and irritate in the process. One adult flea can produce around 2000 eggs that can, in the right environmental conditions, hatch to produce flea larva. These eggs or larva hide in waiting for a warm blooded host e.g. your dog to come along and within a short time of this hatch to produce a hungry flea.

Are there certain locations or seasons where my pet is more prone to picking them up? Flea eggs tend to lie dormant in darker areas, in your home under sofas or tables where there isn’t a lot of movement or traffic. Outdoors where your pet lies a lot, and when the environmental conditions are right for the eggs to hatch. Many different species of flea exist but in general dog fleas prefer dogs and cat fleas prefer cats. They prefer animal hosts but will resort to biting people when animals are unavailable. In Hong Kong we should expect fleas most months of the year.

What are some of the ways I can prevent my pet from getting fleas? Prevention is important and involves measures in/on your dog and its environment. You must attempt to break the life cycle of the flea and different anti flea products attack this at different places. This can be achieved by 1. Regular in-home cleaning especially under tables and chairs and on carpets. In-home infestation pest control companies can be employed to spray your home using pet friendly products. 2. Treating your pet. Many anti flea products exist nowadays and it’s a good idea to discuss which one is best for your pet with its vet. Flea shampoos, washes, spotton type on products to the skin and even yummy treats now exist laced with flea killing

parasiticides. They usually need to be given monthly all year round.

What are some of the negative side effects of having fleas? Many dogs are allergic to flea bites, which can cause intense scratching, red and flaky skin, scabs, hot spots, and hair loss. Fleas can also transport tapeworms and cause anaemia. They really are not pleasant but as they have been around for thousands of years fleas do know how to survive the odds. Good luck keeping them at bay!

Peter Wood talks Sai Kung

PANDEMIC PANTO

sai kung Honestly, sometimes I think we Hongkongers are living in a Covid pantomime. “Oh yes, they will!” yells the Beta variant from the stage. “Oh no they won’t!” prompts the Delta variant from the wings. These travel bubbles open and close faster than a…well, you get the idea. I keep pinching myself. After the grinding lockdowns of the last 18 months, things seemed, for a fleeting moment, to be on the up. Everyone I know is double-jabbed, they’re all desperate to travel. Like so many of us immigrants (I hate the word “expat”— thanks Nicole) this pandemic has prevented me from visiting my family for nearly 2 years. My mum is 84, so for her it’s tick tock. Now I recently heard that prominent microbiologist Yuen Kwok-yung said Hong Kong should maintain its zero-Covid strategy for the time being, while suggesting herd immunity is no longer achievable with the emergence of the Delta variant. I never know what to believe these days. I mean, we’ve been told that herd immunity could be achieved if 70 percent of a population were vaccinated with BioNTech jabs which have an efficacy rate of 95 percent. But the researchers now say the threshold had increased to 97.4 percent. RTHK worked out that taking into account the use of Sinovac jabs which have a lower efficacy rate, the vaccination rate needed for herd immunity would be an—err—unachievable 142.9 percent. Grrr… Whilst I’m on the topic of herd immunity and Sinovac, my family, most of whom live in Zimbabwe, a country that’ll remain in the red zone for some time yet, have all been double vaxxed with Sinovac or Sinopharm. It was the only choice (other than Ivermectin which is not FDA approved, but will keep them worm free for years to come) and the impoverished country jumped at the opportunity. Sinovac hasn’t gone down too well in many places. In the Philippines, President Duterte actually apologised for being vaccinated with the unapproved Sinopharm. And the SinoVac efficacy has sparked riots in Thailand, Indonesia and Peru, whilst countries like Chile, Bahrain, Mongolia, and the Seychelles are finding out that the Chinese vaccine is a lame duck against the Delta variant. Of course, Sinovac was never meant to prevent contagion – and true to form, my mum, my brother, his wife, my nephew, his wife, my cousin, her husband and my brother-in-law all went down with Covid. And we aren’t exactly a feely-touchy family. Oh, there were plenty more, including an entire wedding party for a distant cousin, but I’m restricted to 600 words. Thankfully, everyone survived, but all agreed that this was no flu, leaving them absolutely shattered. My point is, despite the lower efficacy of Sinovac, it kept them out of hospital and alive. Most deaths in Zimbabwe (and there have been many) are those who haven’t had the jab. Food for thought? I wonder if infecting an entire population will

ironically reach that illusive herd immunity? In recent studies, an Israeli health centre found that doublejabbed, previously uninfected people are 13 times as likely to get Covid compared with the naturally immune. This statement sounds pretty dangerous but it does beg the question over vaccinating children; perhaps it is better to simply allow them to be infected on the grounds they’re highly unlikely to come to serious harm but are more likely to gain lasting immunity from the disease that way. To quote one anti-vaxxer brainchild: “But the vaccine doesn’t even guarantee you won’t get sick, it really only stops you from dying.” Not dying sounds pretty damn spectacular, to me. Anyway, since were are on the topic of pestilence and plague: do you think Covid has brought us closer together? I’m way too old, or remotely interested to make use of dating apps *ahem* but I’m reliably informed that the dating app industry has proliferated during our confinement. If statistics are to be believed, virtual dates—a modern take on safe sex— have increased by 30% in the UK in the earlier part the year. As one British lonely heart so eloquently put it; “This year has brought us closer together, there is no time-wasting as well. We had a lot of fun and are having a lot of fun still. There is no bullshit – maybe that is just the way it worked out with us but there does not seem to be the normal dating bullshit, which is nice.” You go girl!
