Dim sum restaurants Top places for little pieces of the heart. Chuen Kee Seafood Restaurant 87 Man Nin Street, Sai Kung, 2791 6742. A favourite among the waterfront Chinese seafood restaurants, Chuen Kee comes highly recommended for its dim sum. The outdoor tables are a bit squished together, but you’ll forget about that once the har gow arrives. If the promenade hubbub seems a bit much, rise above it with a table on the upstairs balcony, where you can view the action in Sai Kung harbour in relative peace. Hung Kee Seafood Restaurant G/F, Shop 6, 4-10, Siu Yat Building, Hoi Pong Square, Sai Kung, 2792 1348. On the seafront promenade, Hung Kee has great views. It’s the biggest dim sum restaurant in town, with more than 100 dishes. It cuts prices from Monday to Saturday with dim sum about $2-$3 cheaper than elsewhere. A popular spot with tourists. Dim Sum available from 6.30am2.30pm.

Tung Kee Seafood Restaurant G/F, Shop 11-15 Siu Yat House, Hoi Pong Square, Sai Kung, 2792 7453. Tung Kee has two locations in Sai Kung, but the most popular is the waterfront venue, near the new pier. As well as the seafront tables, it has a large indoor restaurant, where it serves dim sum from as early as 5am. Join the early risers, or saunter down for a dish of cheung fan as late as 3pm. Dim sum is $9-$13 a dish. Wing Woo Seafood Restaurant G/F, 14A Po Tung Road, Sai Kung, 2792 2412. Don’t be fooled by the Po Tung Road address, Wing Woo is in the old town, opposite Cindy’s Florist. If you’re looking for old-school ambience, this is the spot. Loud and busy on weekday lunchtimes, the dim sum is in large steamers in a cart by the entrance: pick up the lids and take a bit of what you fancy. We recommend the shao mei, particularly juicy and delicious.

Ming Yuen Restaurant G/F, 77-85 Man Nin Street, Sai Kung, 2792 2228. Open from 6.30am, this no-nonsense, downto-earth restaurant buzzes all day. It has the customary “roast meat” corner and a small cooking area to prepare simple dim sum dishes, as well as an outdoor space for busy days and Chinese celebrations. A steady stream of customers is testament to its popularity and the quality of the dishes, which start at $11 a dish. Beach Resort Sha Ha Beach, Tai Mong Tsai Road, Sai Kung. A hotspot for weekend dim sum, the Beach Resort has a row of tables under white pagodas overlooking Inner Port Shelter. There’s a good range, with extra dishes at weekends: don’t miss the Shanghai dumplings. It’s a familyfriendly spot, where you can watch the kids on the beach. Service can be slow at busy times, but with a view like that, who cares? What’s the best bar in Sai Kung? Vote on Sai Kung Awards, detail on P.23

Temple Trek Jackie Peers pays her respects to Tin Hau, the Heavenly Queen of Joss House Bay.

Not only is this a fantastic walk, but if you do it on May 6, you’ll witness the wonderful spectacle of the Tin Hau festival at Joss House Bay, home to the oldest Tin Hau Temple in Hong Kong. I managed to catch similar celebrations for the god Hung Shing at the end of March at the temple on Kau Sai Chau (the golf course island) purely by chance. But what an amazing scene! Boats galore, all decorated to the nines, with drums, lion dancing, smiling faces and extravagant fa pau paper wreath tributes. This one should be even bigger. The walk starts at the free car park at the turn off to Sheung Sze Wan on Clearwater Bay Road, where there’s a noticeboard describing the route. Climb up for 10 minutes, and you’ll join the ridge line walk over High Junk Peak. (An excellent complementary walk for a big day out.) Turn left, and follow the walking trail (not the mountain bike one) for about 90 minutes. It’s a nice workout and good cardio going over the last hill. There’s not much shade, and don’t forget to take water for the dogs. (How well I remember doing this walk as a Sai Kung newcomer on an unsuitably hot day - even our friend’s feisty pup, Bella, had to be carried for a good hour!)

22 | WWW.SAIKUNG.COM

The view from the top looking back presents an astonishing contrast in landscapes and cultures, with the lovely beaches and forests of the Clearwater Bay Country Park to the right and the Tseung Kwan O industrial estate and LOHAS Park spires to the left. How often do the residents of LOHAS Park get to the forest, one wonders - and vice versa. The vegetation is pretty amazing, too. There are still a few bright red azaleas out, and the distinctive Cravaeta religiosa tree, sometimes called the spider tree because of the spectacular length of its flower stamens, is coming into bloom. The first time we did this walk, we dropped down to the seafood restaurants of Po Toi O, and our spirits were quickly restored by a long, relaxing lunch on a rickety pier overlooking the bay. But on May 6, it will be your duty as a Start coastal dweller to drop down to the Joss House Bay Tin Hau temple and pay your respects to the Heavenly Queen. It’s sure to be busy. This is Hong Kong’s End oldest surviving temple, and one of the few Tin Hau temples which is still where it should be – on the water’s edge. Difficulty: Don’t forget to bring Length: 3 km, 1.5 hours your camera! Jackie is a director of Walk Hong Kong, a unique company that reveals the urban and rural delights of Hong Kong to visitors. beauty

hey, good-looking

Take the lift Adele Rosi is converted to the machine age, with a non-invasive face- and body-lift. You get to a certain age when even the most miraculous miracle cream won’t cut the mustard. But a non-invasive face- and body-lift machine? What’s not to get excited about? Sai Kung spa Allure is the proud owner of a cutting-edge piece of computerised beauty kit, developed by French company LPG. The sophisticated Lift M6 machine claims to remedy all sorts of cosmetic problems associated with ageing by stimulating cellular activity via the skin’s surface. It can help improve wrinkles, sagging contours and a dull complexion by reactivating the production of collagen, which gives youthful skin that dewy glow. It is good for slimming and shaping as it boosts the function of beta receptors in skin cells. In peak condition, these turn fat into fatty acids which are expelled through the lymphatic system: ageing beta receptors don’t bother and simply let the fat sit on your hips, bum and thighs. The Lift M6 can also perform breast treatments to firm a slack décolletage, aid with jetlag recovery and works wonders on beer bellies. I had to give it a go. After a mini facial, the therapist applied what looked vaguely like an electric razor, attached by hoses to the main terminal, across every inch of my face, around my eyes and down my neck. Accompanied by a soft whirring sound, the small heads in the Lift M6 made pulsating movements of varying frequencies to drain my skin of toxins, activate collagen growth and lift and firm it. The pulsations were painless, relaxing and gentle, even around the eyes. Call it smoke and mirrors, but it worked. The first side of my face to be “lifted” felt noticeably firmer, and the lines from my nose to mouth seemed less pronounced. My skin looked brighter. According to Allure’s director Jessica Lam, 45 minutes of the Lift M6 offers the same benefits to your circulation as three hours of exercise. But the most bizarre thing about the body-lift was the all-inone white nylon body stocking I had to wear. (It is for hygiene reasons and increases the machine’s suction, which gives better results.) The treatment was similar to the facial except with larger-sized equipment, using rollers and suction to contour, shape, firm and tone the body through deep-tissue massage. The therapist concentrated on problem areas before giving me a fantastic manual massage. Amazingly, my body felt firmer, shapelier and less puffy, and after the treatment my jeans were slightly looser. While I haven’t been mistaken for a teenager, favourable comments have been made on my “fresh face” and one acquaintance asked if I had had a shot of Botox. The Lift M6 gets my vote – particularly the facial treatment - and, yes, I am going back for more. Allure, Shop 67, 22-40 Fuk Man Road, Sai Kung, 2792 2123. Lift M6 Facial: $500 for 45-minute trial treatment; $980 for 90 minutes; M6 Body Treatment: $450 for 45-minute trial; $900 for 90 minutes.

pets

lil furries

Teachers’ pets Dr Carmel Taylor weighs the pros and cons of classroom animals. One reason I am loathe to disclose my profession to my child’s new teachers is that I am often invited to give the dreaded class talk. I am expected to entertain the children with tales of veterinary heroics, ably assisted by armfuls of irresistibly cute small furries. In reality, I am left dodging questions such as, “How do you look in a dragon’s mouth without getting burned?” Another reason not to mention my occupation is that I invariably end up having to offer professional advice on school pets who develop terminal conditions. There is nothing more stressful than 30 preschoolers trooping through the hospital armed with artistic tributes imploring you to “Make Oreo better, please”. Class pets are a controversial subject, frowned on by many animaladvocacy groups. But in Hong Kong, where the most animal contact some kids have are such science projects as “worms in a microwave”, it can only be a good thing. It teaches children compassion and responsibility. However, careful consideration of suitability, space required and time commitments are needed to ensure a successful class pet Lizards are interesting, but not cuddly, and some require live prey. Terrapins need special habitats, and can transmit salmonella. Fish are safe and don’t require much space but have a high mortality rate. Rabbits need space for exercise, and have a tendency to chew things. Social animals, they are best kept in pairs, although same-sex pairs may fight and mixed pairs often end up “doing the wild thing”, which might need some explaining, so best to have them neutered. Hamsters are nocturnal, and grumpy enough to impale a finger if roused from slumber. Their cute appearance disguises their pugilistic nature - put two males in a cage overnight and there may only be one left in the morning. And before you ask, it is extremely difficult to be certain whether they are boys or girls. A teacher friend took Bob, a plump hamster, home for the holidays. After rescuing him from the cat and her son’s attempt to use him as a test pilot for his helicopter, she woke to find Bob had multiplied. Guinea pigs are a good choice – they rarely bite, are awake during the day, will tolerate overzealous handling and can be relatively happy as a single pet. If you add a companion, watch out if one becomes unusually fat. They may have been indulging in more than blueberries... Dr Carmel Taylor, MVB MRCVS DipAiCVD www.cutaneous.com.hk
