cept Con [The Concept]
The shift in thinking inside the box, yet out of it. The shift in how I see, feel and perceive the world around me. The shift in who I was and who I now aim to be. The shift in being able to use the power of design to change perceptions. The shift that makes today better than yesterday. The shift in how I see the future. My portfolio is an outcome of these various shifts of life that has made me a much better designer and a human.

[Objective]
Through typographic explorations and experiments, express the given words. Create two visually appealing and unique posters. The first word was “Frantic” and the second was the title of a song, “Locked Away”. [Approach]
Since the project was about experimenting, I tried out various methods other than computer explorations to emote the feeling of fear through typography. I used various tools and media such as inks, projector and household materials, to create strong layouts.

[Objective]
Observe and document your life, emotions and experiences for three months and extract things that are unique to you and your personality. Through typographic experiments, design a journal that takes the reader through your experiences. [Approach]
After several weeks of documenting my daily life, I came across some weird obsessions that I possess. As I tracked my behaviors on different days of the week, I found out that I was addicted to buying cosmetics and beauty products that I did not need. Since the cycle of buying, regretting and buying again was an ongoing process, I connected pages of the entire book together with a single hand-drawn line.

[Objective]
Design a series of three book covers that are visually unique and appealing. Use various principles of design to redesign the book covers with a different approach, yet maintaining the essence of what the books stand for. [Approach]
Since I selected books written by an Indian author about an Indian God, I decided to use the ‘Devnagari’ script to create an authentic and traditional feel. Since my target audience were based in America, I used Roman letters as my primary element and incorporated the Indian letters to create three fun and dynamiclooking book covers.

[Objective]
Design an app based on an idea that is personal and unique to you. The concept can be imaginative but the functioning of the app must be based on logic and must be designed to be as good as a real application for the target audience. [Approach]
After brainstorming several ideas, I decided to go forward with a concept that ties me back to my roots, which is to my home country—India. Coming from a place with high spiritual beliefs, I have always wondered what it would be like if our prayers got answered. Thus, the “Mini Shrine” app is a fun way to get advice and stay connected to the divine entities.

[Objective]
Select an existing Annual Report that is not well designed and redesign a new version of the report which focuses on refined typography, well-designed information graphics, charts and a good selection of images. [Approach]
I selected the NASA Annual Report FY 2018. I wanted to explore unconventional ways of treating the headlines, images, and information graphics. I also decided to stick to the two main colors of NASA that are red and blue, to retain the identity. This also made the report a two-color print job, which will reduce production costs.

Get out of your house and search for a potential sign that has several messaging intentions. Develop a design campaign that involves a narrative, series and a digital component to promote the brand that the sign is related to. [Approach]
The sign that I selected was a communication that promoted an upcoming sale of MAC Cosmetic products. I wanted to create a “bold yet elegant look to the entire design campaign. The idea was to show off the products in a more creative and visually appealing way. The theme of combing photography with illustrations worked well throughout the campaign.

Select a book of your choice that includes headlines, subheadlines, body content, images and image captions. Redesign the book by applying the various principles of design and refine the typography. [Approach]
I selected the book named “Seashells for this project as the original design was unsatisfactory. The goal for redesigning the layouts was to create the calm, refreshing, serene feeling that one experiences at the beach. This relates to the author of the book, Budd Titlow, who writes what he feels about the various types of seashells.

[Objective]
Redesign promotional materials for an already existing design conference. The typography must be the hero element in all of the collaterals. [Approach]
I chose "DesignYatra", which is India's biggest international Design Conference. The theme for 2018 was "Contrary Thinking", dedicated to design rebels that challenge the norms of design. On the contrary to the saying opposites attract and likes repel, I came up with the idea of "Opposite Rebel". Thus, I developed a theme that was bold, colorful and vibrant that reflected the nature of the Indian culture.

[Objective]
Design a type specimen for a typeface of your own choice. The specimen must be a unique idea that grabs the attention of graphic designers. [Approach]
The typeface that I selected is called "Advent Pro". The goal for this project was to make the type specimen informative as well as useful for the designers. Thus, I designed a diary for typography lovers and named it "Diary of a Typoholic". It contains organizers, budget and project planners, working space and basic typography information. The diary is also a two-color print job to reduce production costs.
