M i s s i o n S tat e m e n t St. Anselm’s Abbey School seeks to promote the spiritual, personal and intellectual development of young men with demonstrated academic achievement. Our school, serving grades six through twelve, with its roots in the values of the Christian gospel and Catholic tradition, strives to create a community built on respect for truth, love of learning, regard for human dignity and tolerance. We pursue this goal by leading our students through a challenging and balanced program of study in the arts, sciences and theology that gives them a solid preparation for the demands of college. By living and promoting the Benedictine spirit, we strive within our school to create an atmosphere of peace, a sense of service to community and a willingness within our students to work toward a balance in mind, body and spirit.

President’s Message For my inner growth, it is best when I remember to say “thank you” to every living thing that graces my eyes or whose sound fills my ears.

Linda Hogan, Chickasaw Dear Parents, Alumni and Friends of St. Anselm’s Abbey School, This year has been very busy and one of happy transition. Our first lay Headmaster, Mr. Louis Silvano, has taken up the reigns of the School directing students, faculty and parents through the rigors of academic life and our maze of activities.

Meanwhile, as President, I have been focusing my time on public relations, alumni affairs, fundraising, maintaining the School’s Benedictine charism and working with our Board of Trustees and the directors of our new Donor Trust.

Mr. Silvano has done a superb job learning the ins and outs of St. Anselm’s Abbey School, from college placements and curriculum mapping to supervising student academic progress and attending Parents Association meetings. Later in this Report, you can read about the success of the Class of 2009, with 39 students the largest graduating class in the School’s history, and follow some of our many activities.

One particularly significant event of the past year was our celebration in April of 900 Years of Saint Anselm of Canterbury. The festivities began with our first-ever All-Alumni Reunion Weekend on April 17–19. The alumni celebrated with a cocktail reception on Friday evening, a pig roast and picnic on Saturday afternoon, Vespers and a dinner for 270 alumni and guests on Saturday evening and a Mass on Sunday morning. On Monday, Prior Simon officiated at a Mass for the entire School community, followed that afternoon by an engaging lecture given by Dr. Michael Gorman, ’83, Professor of Philosophy at Catholic University. And finally on Tuesday, April 21, the actual Feast of Saint Anselm, Archbishop Donald Wuerl was the principal celebrant and homilist at a Mass of Thanksgiving for 290 guests of the Abbey, followed by a reception and formal dinner in our athletic complex. We will continue our yearlong celebration of Saint Anselm until April 21, 2010.

Perhaps a fitting end for this highly successful year is to be able to report that the School has been able to operate “in the black” for an eighteenth consecutive year, thanks in large part to all our benefactors, donors, alumni and friends. Even in a challenging economy, the School was able to make its final payment for the latest addition to the Academic Building while increasing scholarship financial aid.

This year’s Fall Scholarship Gala, which honored me for 40 years of teaching in the School, grossed nearly $230,000 for current-year financial aid. (Incidentally, as President, I still teach Earth Science, Native American Studies and Physical Anthropology.) The Annual Fund also raised over $230,000 in all categories. And this spring, the School was able to secure another $200,000 in pledges for named scholarships to help Upper School students over the next four years. Obviously, the School is deeply indebted to the many foundations and individual donors who are listed in this publication, and on behalf of the whole community, I offer our sincerest gratitude.

I want to personally thank Mr. G. Thomas Borger for his tireless work over the past two years as the first Chairman of our Board of Trustees. His term as Chairman ended in June, and Mr. William Fennell, ’66, will succeed him to that post. I am grateful to all our Board members for their many hours of service to the School, and I especially want to thank Mrs. Olive Lewis, Dr. Caryl Ersenkal and Dr. Daniel McMahon, whose terms are up this June, for jobs well done.

I also wish to thank Fr. Simon, all the monks and the entire faculty for their dedication and hard work during the past year. And of course, I want to thank my staff in the President’s Office: Mr. Lawrence Hamm, ’68, Director of Alumni Affairs; Mr. James Leathers, ’04, Director of Communications; and Ms. Michelle Kannan, Development Associate; as well as our Business Office personnel, Mrs. Ieva Young and Mr. Mark Commins, for their never-ending work.

The School is also indebted to Mr. John Corrigan, ’83, President of the Alumni Association, and to all of our alumni for their continued support. At the annual Alumni Golf Outing on June 1, the Alumni Association presented the School with a check for $40,000 for financial aid. I am also pleased to report that this summer I held regional meetings with alumni in Portland, Seattle, San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Las Vegas and Chicago.

So, on and on the miracle of St. Anselm’s Abbey School continues in what has truly been another impressive year. Please enjoy the rest of this Annual Report. Thank you again for your support, enthusiasm, prayers and gifts.

Letter from the Headmaster Dear Friends, As I reflect upon my first year as Headmaster, I feel fortunate to be here, and I have learned much about the culture of the School and its Benedictine charism. I am deeply grateful to Fr. Peter Weigand for his guidance and support. We have developed a collaborative working relationship, and I believe we have made a smooth transition to the new model of a Headmaster and President working side-by-side.

More than 500 parents, faculty, students and alumni attended this year’s Fall Scholarship Gala to celebrate Fr. Peter’s 40 years of dedicated service to the School and to thank him for his steadfast leadership as Headmaster over the last 17 years. It was a special gathering that brought together people from the past and the present who shared wonderful memories of Fr. Peter. Among the many tributes to Fr. Peter were two speeches given by Abbot Aidan and John Corrigan, ’83, President of the Alumni Association.

On September 22, thanks to the work of our Director of Alumni Affairs, Mr. Lawrence Hamm, ’68, we invited eight impressive alumni to give Career Day presentations to students in Forms V and VI. They are all highly successful in their respective fields, including law, international business, psychology, systems engineering, science, architecture, medicine and corporate finance. Our alumni remain the most persuasive testament to the School’s mission.

The traditions of House Day were upheld on September 29, and the St. Anselm’s Abbey School spirit was palpable.

I was so impressed by the student leadership of our four Houses. Each new student was called to the stage to receive his house shirt with enthusiastic applause. The day’s activities included an It’s Academic quiz game, a variety of athletic events, a talent show and a relay race. It was a great day that confirmed for me what a special niche St. Anselm’s has among independent schools. Our House system helps boys find a sense of belonging, and it builds community throughout the School.

On Wednesday, November 26, the entire School gathered in the Devine Theater for our Thanksgiving service. This was followed by a traditional Thanksgiving dinner in the Commons. Students sat at tables in mixed age groups according to their respective Houses. I am grateful to our parent volunteers who helped serve the meal and to all of the parents who provided the delicious pies! We concluded our annual Thanksgiving food drive by donating more than 500 pounds of food to the Little Sisters of the Poor.

During this year the Board of Trustees and various subcommittees have been developing a new Strategic Plan for the School. A document about the Strategic Plan will be published later this fall and will be used primarily in marketing, development and admissions. Below are the essential goals of this process, as identified by our Board and Strategic Planning Committee: • • • • • • • • •

Maintain Catholic/Benedictine mission Increase endowment, financial aid, reserves and alternative sources of revenue Consider alternative configurations (high school only/middle school only/co-ed) Maintain and increase enrollment Maintain high academic standards Maintain affordable tuition Consider providing support services for students with learning disabilities Establish a task force on faculty recruitment/retention/reward strategies Establish a task force on marketing

As we begin a new school year, I wish to recognize two dedicated administrators who have recently stepped down.

After almost fifty years working in Catholic education, Sr. Patricia Scanlon, RJM, decided to retire at the end of the 2008-2009 school year. We are deeply grateful for her 13 years of service to St. Anselm’s directing our College Guidance program. Sr. Pat is leaving after another year of outstanding college acceptances. We wish her every success as she pursues new directions in her ministry. Another veteran administrator, Athletic Director Mr. Mark Dean, also decided to step down from this role. I thank Mark for his commitment and dedicated service as Athletic Director over the last three years, and I am pleased that he will continue as a coach and teacher in the coming year.

Concluding a highly successful school year, we had a memorable graduation on May 31 to honor the 39 graduates of the Class of 2009. There was standing room only in the Devine Theater as families, friends, faculty and the monastic community gathered for the celebration. These graduates will attend an impressive array of colleges and universities, a list of which appears later in this Annual Report.

Now that I have experienced the cycle of the entire school year and we prepare for the next, I appreciate more fully the words of Saint Benedict that greet those entering our Academic Building: Rursus Incipiemus Nunc et Semper We begin again, now and forever.

Commencement Address Dr. Joseph Zorc, Class of 1984 Dear Prior Simon, Fr. Peter, Fr. Michael, Abbot Aidan, other monks, Mr. Silvano, graduates, family members and friends: First, please let me thank Fr. Peter for inviting me to speak to you today. It has become a tradition for a member of the 25th or 50th Anniversary Class to participate in the graduation ceremony, and it is an honor for me to do so. Second, I’ll ask for your patience, as speaking from a lectern with no other visual aids as crutches is not my usual operating procedure. As a member of the medical school faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, most of my talks are filled with graphs, figures and statistics. If I lose my audience’s attention, I can always resort to some horrific images from the pathology lab or resuscitation room to gain it back. But the ideas that are appropriate for this occasion are less sensational, and I’ve needed to change my approach. On a positive note, you may know that my clinical specialty is emergency medicine in a children’s hospital. Sometime during the past 10 years of practice, my attention span dwindled to that of a threeyear-old, so my remarks will likely be brief. your years at St. Anselm’s and put them in perspective.

In preparation for this talk today, I have done the same, along with the help of my classmates, with the benefit of a little time and distance. Three strong themes or values emerge when I consider my time here at the Abbey. I was reassured when the same themes were expressed by Fr. Michael, another graduate, when he gave the homily at the All-Alumni Reunion Weekend this spring, a Mass that also commemorated the 900th feast day of Saint Anselm. These themes have remained as a core part of all my experiences since my time here, and I’ll offer them for your consideration.

As the first order of business, I would like to congratulate the Class of 2009. This is your day, and you have earned it. I will also be the first to welcome you into the select club of St. Anselm’s alumni. Only you, and a thousand or so of us others, can fully appreciate the experience of spending one’s formative years journeying up a hill to a Benedictine monastery in Washington, D.C., at the turn of the 21st century. Now you will move on and explore new directions, and we all wish you the best.

Commencement speakers often give advice, but that can be a perilous endeavor. At my graduation in 1984, it might have been helpful to advise investing in Microsoft, which went public shortly later and then split shares nine times, or cellular phones; my father, an early adopter, had one the size of a suitcase that seemed pretty impractical at the time. None of us in that audience could foresee how things around us would play out in the future. For example, that our old gym locker room would metamorphose into this beautiful theater. Or that Fr. Peter’s duck pond, an ingenious production facility for vile manual labor, might foreshadow Guantanamo Bay as a detention center. Any advice given today will have a limited lifespan as you determine the trajectory of your own future. However, as you look forward, now is a good time to reflect on

The first two themes are Faith and Reason. They belong together, as that is how they exist here at St. Anselm’s. Ora et labora, Pax in Sapientia; these paired phrases displayed around the campus denote the balance between the spiritual and the physical, between religion and science. Although our current culture and media like to pit them against each other, in fact they are intertwined and inseparable. The more that science learns, the more mysteries we uncover; just look at the end of any scientific paper and you’ll find the words “more research is needed.” And faith is not strongest when it is blind, but rather when it has been strengthened by reason and endured despite the natural human tendencies to doubt and question.

2009 Vespers of Graduation

One of my strong classroom memories was of a day in our senior-year Ethics class taught by a professor at Catholic University, a nationally known ethics scholar.

The topic was the ethics of contraception, and one of my classmates debated with our professor on the topic until he had steam coming out of his ears. At the time, we students may have viewed this stalemate as a minor classroom victory. Looking back, his patience was remarkable; few academics would tolerate such a debate with a group of teenagers. But he knew what he was doing, as over time, discussions such as that one molded our ability to think through ethical issues for ourselves as college students and adults. We tend to think of our current time as one of a crisis in faith, but these issues are not new. Saint Anselm, as Archbishop of Canterbury in the 11th century, struggled to prove the existence of God, grappled with growing secular powers, and confronted ethical conflicts in the Church, including issues of practical morality such as celibacy in the clergy.

As for the outcome of our classroom debate, subsequent events suggest that our ethics professor may have won the argument over the long run. Not surprisingly, my classmate who debated him that day became a lawyer and is now the district attorney for a county in Virginia, which you may want to keep in mind if you are driving above the speed limit south of the District. He is a devout Catholic and is currently leading an effort to found a new parochial high school in his county. As for the ethics of contraception, we haven’t debated that recently, but he does have seven children.

an additional core value of this School makes it more unique in our modern world, and that value is humility.

When I speak of humility, I’m not speaking of humility learned through defeats on the athletic field, although that inevitably is part of the sports experience in a school with a few dozen students per class. I’m not speaking of humility from high standards in the classroom, although that also is inevitable when a school selects students for academic excellence; where, as Garrison Keillor might put it, “all the children are above average.” As an aside, some graduates, when they move back to a more normal academic distribution, are tempted to ride the crest of that Bell curve, which may not always require as much effort as it did here. I would encourage you to push yourselves to your own limits.

The humility of which I am speaking is gained from day-to-day interaction with the monks, living examples of dedication to Christian ideals. Many talk about these ideals, but few “walk the walk” as do they, day in and day out, back and forth from the monastery in their black habits, usually deep in thought with eyes towards the ground, the origin of the word humility.

Dust to dust, ashes to ashes…the humility we witness in the monks is one that looks both backward and forward. It looks back and recalls where we came from, the sacrifices made by those who came before us. On that note, today would be a good day to look out in the audience to thank family members and others who have enabled you to be here today, likely involving substantial personal and financial sacrifice. In my case that includes my parents, wife and four children, and other family members. The humility exemplified here at the Abbey is also one that looks forward to the future in recognition that our time here is limited and others will follow to uphold the traditions we hold dear. That realization is the very impetus for this School as well as centuries of Benedictine preservation of human knowledge. I would encourage you to live that form of humility by including some kind of teaching or mentorship in your future careers. Many of us find that those experiences are among the most rewarding in our professional lives. Humility should not be mistaken for passivity or inactivity. Your future daily routine may not involve rising early in the morning for prayers, rigorous academic discussion, followed by riding a tractor or beekeeping. However, no matter what your career, you may find that some of the most effective individuals do so without fanfare, but with dedication, focus, and willingness to take on hard work. That lesson is hard to miss here at the Abbey and pushes all of us to be better students, colleagues, husbands, fathers, followers and leaders.

In closing, I’ll thank you for the opportunity to come and share this day with you. St. Anselm’s is the kind of place where one feels at home even after 25 years. I’ll encourage you to continue to keep in touch with this community and your classmates, and use other alumni as a resource as you move forward in your lives. We’ll look forward to your accomplishments, the latest yield, 900 years after Saint Anselm, from roots of faith, reason and humility.

As for reason, all of you have your own anecdotes about the rigorous academic program that St. Anselm’s provides. At times you may have questioned the relevance of the broad range of subjects you have studied: math, science, history, multiple languages. You will find that the academic discipline and work ethic you have learned here will serve you well in college and beyond. Memories and experiences from here will reappear unexpectedly at later times in life. For myself, in times of academic and other stress, I sometimes hear one of the more famous quotations from Virgil’s Aeneid, which we read in Fr. (later Abbot) Aidan’s Latin class, one of the highlights of all my years as a student. For those who missed it, reading Catullus with Abbot Aidan was to First Form Latin as T.S. Eliot is to Go Dog Go. In that quotation, Aeneas tells his band of men who are shipwrecked having endured some tough circumstances, “Forsan et haec olim meminisse juvabit.”

Loosely translated, the closest colloquial phrase in our modern culture is “Someday you’ll look back at this and laugh.” I mistranslated it, using the other meaning for juvabit, but it still makes more sense to me that way…

“Perhaps someday it will help to look back at these things.” Someday when you look back at the things you’ve learned here, you’ll find that they helped to build a deep and lasting foundation for all the learning that came afterward.

Developing abilities in faith and reason are certainly core parts of being a student at St. Anselm’s, but they are not the full story. Many Catholic and other religious schools focus on these areas with excellent results. But 8

Michael, Dr. Caruso, Dr. Zorc, monks of St. Anselm’s Abbey, faculty, friends, family, and most of all, my fellow members of the Class of 2009, it is my privilege and pleasure to be speaking to you today as we celebrate these past years and as we look to the future with hope and anticipation.

It has been an amazing seven years here at the Abbey, though I must admit when I entered these doors I thought I was going to St. Albans. It was not until third period when Ms. Leahy said “St. Anselm’s” that I asked myself, “What the heck is that?” Who ever would have thought that going to the wrong school would have been the best mistake of my life?

In all seriousness, St. Anselm’s has taught each of us so many lessons fundamental to success in life. We have learned the values of hard work and teamwork, trust and love, faith and prayer, and most of all perseverance and the many ideals that help define an “Abbey Boy.”

All of these memories. Everything from the mannequin security guard to Corey the security guard; from strict AP tests to running through the library on Surf’s Up day; and from listening to discussions of literary masterpieces to listening to Mr. McCarthy’s famous prison stories. These memories—along with the values this sacred place has taught us—have shaped our lives forever. We are truly going to miss St. Anselm’s, and we will never forget what we have learned from this place.

This fall, we will all be heading down different paths, but we will always have a common bond: a St. Anselm’s education, experience and community. We are all so thankful for attending this School and have gratitude for everything that we have learned and accomplished, and for everything that we have received from this special place. St. Anselm’s Abbey School has taught us how to live a life of Ora et Labora (Work and Prayer) through Pax in Sapientia (Peace in Wisdom) while maintaining an overwhelming feeling of community.

Consider first the hard work and teamwork both inside and outside of the classroom. One need only look at Physics, Humanities and most recently, the AP classes to see our class working hard, but together.

These elements are also evident outside of the classroom in displays of support and school spirit in everything from It’s Academic to the theatre, and most significantly, athletic competitions—especially against our inferior arch-rivals, WIS. Teamwork creates a sense of trust and love represented strongly in the St. Anselm’s community.

This school has been a “home away from home” for the Class of 2009. The monks are our wise elders; the faculty and staff, our loving parents; and the students from Form A through Form VI, our brothers. This large, loving family is what makes St. Anselm’s so special to us all. Nowhere else can you hug your teachers or grow so close to a group of rambunctious teens. We grew even closer through Kairos, just one of all the memories we have made.

So first, I would like to thank all of the parents for sending their sons to this School. Parents, this is one of the best decisions you have ever made. Second, I would like to thank the faculty for all of the love and support over the years, both inside the classroom and outside it, especially remembering those who are not with us today: Mr. Murphy, Fr. Dan and Coach Norris.

Faculty, we all have the utmost respect for you. And last, but definitely not least, I want to thank my fellow members of the Class of 2009. I love you all. These have been the best years of my life thanks to you. We have grown from friends to brothers. And though this celebration seems a bit final, this is not the end, my brothers. This is simply a new beginning, the turning of the page to a new chapter in our lives. To quote Saint Benedict:

From memories of the Big Yellow Bus, and of Fr. Dan stopping the bus mid-trip to confront the “friendly” neighborhood kids who threw rocks at us, to memories of racing to get a spot in line on the new small buses.

Memories of Mr. Morse’s English class: from discussing the themes pertinent to Death of a Salesman, to discussing the themes pertinent to the television show Lost. From memories of Ms. Pelosi’s witty remarks, to memories of the students’ impressions of Ms. Pelosi’s witty remarks. From memories of dodging Mr. Achilles’s flying chalk, to memories of trying to decipher Mr. Lippe’s vocabulary. From memories of the grueling three-minute walk from the school to the gym, to memories of cross country and track practices. These are but a few of the memories, the moments that will stay with us all of our lives.

Rursus incipiemus nunc et semper.

Always we begin again.

Michael, Dr. Zorc, monks, faculty, family, friends and most of all, fellow graduates, I want to start by saying that I am an Abbey Boy, and I am proud of it. For seven years I have attended St. Anselm’s Abbey School, and I am proud of what our class has accomplished. Going to St. Anselm’s has changed all of us in profound ways.

Looking back, I remember first coming to St. Anselm’s.

Probably like most kids in this room who came in sixth grade, I was not looking forward to my days at St. Anselm’s. Happy with my group of friends, I felt set; I even had a girlfriend! I am a little sad to say that I did indeed peak socially in fifth grade, but that is beside the point. It did not take me long to realize, however, that St. Anselm’s was one of the most, how should I say this, unusual places I had ever been. Where else could you find a teacher like Dr. Wood, who is feared by every student years before even taking his class, and whose Egg Drop competition is complete with ritual song and dance? Where else could you find a teacher like Ms. Pelosi, whose eagerness to make jokes at her students’ expense can only be surpassed by her eagerness to force sophomores to fully comprehend the Latin language?

Where else could you find a person like Fr. Edmund, whose simple handshakes made a world of difference in our lives? And where else could you find a person like Fr. Peter, whose stories about Cacton and Cactonian exercises confuse faculty and students alike?

today. Especially after Kairos, these Abbey Boys have become my family, but just like a real family is never perfect, seeing the same group of guys every day can be difficult. However, it is certainly comforting. When many of us did poorly on a Calculus exam, a classmate sent out an email to all of us saying, “Don’t worry, friends, we’re Abbey Boys, we’ll get through this.” This brotherhood is paramount to daily life at St. Anselm’s, whether we realize it or not.

While the monastic presence and this close-knit community have influenced my character, St. Anselm’s is special because I have learned to make my own decisions and be responsible for them. An Abbey Boy learns to take in the love of his brothers and the advice of his elders, and he is uniquely prepared to carve his own path. Abbey Boys do not always conform to what others might like.

They strive to be independent; they are called to lead responsibly, committed to bettering the community they are a part of. This is what we all have done, whether or not we have realized it.

Fr. Peter, along with the other monks, is one of the defining characteristics of St. Anselm’s. I think we take for granted how fundamental the monastic presence is on this campus. How often does one get the opportunity to interact with monks on a daily basis? These monks inspire each and every one of us, leading through their examples of brotherhood, deep responsibility and obedience. The monks who dedicate their lives to St. Anselm’s are our teachers, counselors and friends. They demand from the students a dedicated academic life, just as they themselves practice a dedicated religious life. Abbey Boys respond to this challenge surprisingly well. They learn from each other, lead through community service and attempt to influence the people around them for the better.

Today our training in this school is complete, and we have to move on to a life that some people call the real world— but one’s definition of “real” is relative. I have certainly felt that the last seven years have been very real. A speech cannot be complete without a good quote, I suppose, and I am going to call upon my favorite artist, Sam Beam, to sum things up for me. He says that “there are things that drift away, like our endless numbered days.” In some ways he is right—life seems long in the thought, but awfully short while we are living it. I guess that what I am trying to say with this quote is this: please do not let the last seven years “drift away.” As we go out into the world, let us not waste the opportunities afforded to us.

Our little choices can make a huge difference on those around us. We have all grown more independent, but this means nothing without some purpose. Independence is fruitless when used for selfish gain, but when used for the betterment of others, as is the way of a true Abbey Boy, independence is the hallmark of a leader. St. Anselm’s is a community that will never leave any of us in spirit. We must never allow ourselves to lose the values that we have learned on this monastic ground. Please keep in touch, and thank you for staying at this wonderful School with me all these years. I love you all. Thank you, everyone, for making this wonderful experience possible.

Obviously, in sixth grade I had little awareness of this monastic presence. Likewise, I had little awareness of the community that would so shape my life and keep me coming back year after year. Life at St. Anselm’s is like a vibrant brotherhood where no brother is left behind, and everyone is striving to do his best. Fr. Castro once told me that he loved St. Anselm’s because “it is a place where two different worlds clash and blend: the world of spiritual work and solitude, and that of rambunctious teenage life.” He was spot-on in his assessment. Despite the differences in their lifestyles, monks, teachers and students come together in unexpected ways and work as a community, a small, close-knit community. We have shared our lives, stories, experiences and thoughts with each other, and it would be hard to feel closer to this graduating class than I do 10

Michael Carey, Class of 2005 be given a challenge after just completing another, I urge you not to be distracted but to remain focused on your goals. No matter what you think now, there is no safety net in high school, especially at St. Anselm’s, like there is in college. You won’t have the ability to drop classes in the middle of the semester only to add brand-new ones the next day, and there won’t be any type of freshmen forgiveness. With the proper amount of preparation and concentration, I am supremely confident that each one of you will be granted admission to the college of your choice. And don’t worry; you will be happy to know that in college there are plenty of beautiful blonde-haired distractions to deal with.

Now that I have spoken to you about your studies, I would like to offer you my second piece of advice. St. Anselm’s is an incredibly unique school because of both the size and character of its community. These traits help to foster friendships between students that are stronger than any other relationship. You may not recognize it now, but one day you will realize that there is something sacred in this brotherhood of men. However, just like with your academic pursuits, this is not a time to be satisfied. Continue to learn more about your classmates, because I can assure you that each one of them is an interesting individual. Build your community based on honesty, loyalty and respect, and you will be rewarded with more lifelong friendships than any man could ever ask for.

Thank you, Prior Simon, Fr. Peter, Mr. Silvano, monks, faculty, friends and family. Congratulations to the Middle School Class of 2009. Let me first say that it was an honor to speak at my own Middle School transition ceremony, and likewise it is an honor to be given the opportunity to speak in front of you this evening. You should all be very proud of your accomplishments thus far. It is my firm belief that there are no courses of study as rigorous as that provided by St. Anselm’s. I feel as though I am at a perfect position in my own life to speak to you today.

If I were any older, you may consider me to be just another adult talking like he has all of the answers. If I were any younger, you would probably shrug me off as having hardly any more life experience than you do personally. However, at the absolutely beautiful age of 21 and having just two weeks past graduated from the University of Maryland, I can safely say to you that I neither have all the answers nor a lack of experience.

So I come to you tonight not to lecture, but instead to provide you with some knowledge that I wish I had received when I sat in your position.

Finally, let me advise you on one last topic: your legacy.

This is something that I’m sure very few of you have thought about at this point in your academic career. In reality, I don’t expect you to think about it until the waning moments of your high school days. But at a certain point, you will look back at your time here at St. Anselm’s and ponder, “How am I remembered?”

During the next four years, you will develop a very close relationship with the faculty here and, more than your fellow classmates, they will remember your accomplishments and your missteps equally. This is not to say that only a perfect record at St. Anselm’s will make you happy in the years to come. Quite the contrary, a little bit of harmless mischief can provide a much-needed break from the stress of academic life at St. Anselm’s. Your mentors will recognize when your actions go beyond the realm of playful and become malicious. My advice to you is to conduct yourselves as good-natured gentlemen, and you will be welcomed with open arms back to this School.

As I said earlier, all of you ought to be very happy with your success, but gentlemen, now is not the time to be satisfied. Now more than ever, continued progress in high school has never been more important. Each and every year, colleges have had to deal with record numbers of qualified applicants with roughly the same amount of open spots each semester. As a current employee of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the University of Maryland, I have gained a first-hand look into the college admissions process. Each semester, I have seen my colleagues make difficult decision after difficult decision as to whom should be offered a spot at Maryland. So, gentlemen, as much as you don’t want to

Gentlemen, I have tried not to overstep my bounds as a recent college graduate in speaking to you here tonight.

Having been in your exact shoes not too many years ago, I can safely say that there are better days ahead. I hope that you take the advice that I have given you here tonight and use it in the next four years. Maybe one day, you will return to St. Anselm’s and feel just as much at home as I do tonight. Mr. Silvano, Fr. Peter, Fr. Michael, all of our Middle School faculty and staff, our priests, and of course, my fellow Form II students and their families, I am very honored to be standing here this evening and would like to thank all of you for this privilege.

We are all here tonight to celebrate the transition of the students in our eighth grade class from middle school to high school. It’s exciting to think that we will be in high school next year! As high schoolers, I’m sure we will gather lots of memorable stories and experiences.

Until I came to St. Anselm’s in sixth grade, I attended Our Lady of Victory School in my neighborhood. I really loved that school and couldn’t imagine life anywhere else. But within a matter of days of arriving at the Abbey—walking through the campus, meeting new people—I realized that it was a great fit.

I could tell that I had, once again, found a school that I don’t want to leave.

But tonight is a great opportunity to think about our past years together. It’s only been a short time, but think about what has changed! Look at your sixth grade class picture and you’ll see what I mean. Look at Andrew Fois. He must have grown three feet! All of us are getting taller, faster, stronger, more mature and maybe even a little bit wiser. There are other things that we’ve excelled at…like texting very fast, downloading music and shredding at Guitar Hero. I know each of our parents is especially proud of these great skills!

I also want to thank my family: my mom, my dad and my two little brothers, Vincent and George, who have always supported and encouraged me. Mom, Dad, thank you for guiding me to St. Anselm’s and giving me this great opportunity.

This evening, we should also remember in our prayers all of those whose families have had to deal with difficult circumstances or illnesses. And we should work especially hard to reach out to our classmates and let them know that we are a family and that we can lean on each other.

These past three years here have been a great experience for all of us. From sixth grade with Cameron debating with Fr. Gabriel, to seventh grade, waking up every morning to another Cactonian adventure with Fr. Peter, and especially this past year of eighth grade, watching all my classmates try to keep up with Mr. Corrigan’s quick pace, Ms. Brinley’s memorizations and Mr. Mann’s chemical equations. This may not sound like fun to you guys—but to Abbey Boys, it’s a blast!

So, I hope everyone realizes how lucky we are! We have this campus, which is like a refuge for learning and playing. We have faculty and staff that really care about us and teach us new things, and teach us how to learn.

We have each other—and probably the beginnings of lifelong friendships. We have families that help us every day. And we have our new Headmaster, Mr. Silvano, and President, Fr. Peter, who we know will work hard to protect all of the greatness of St. Anselm’s and even find some ways to make it better.

We’ve pumped iron with Mr. Madey, we’ve read Shakespeare with Ms. Dunne and we’ve talked sports with Corey. We’ve toured Borneo with Mr. Harwood, we’ve jammed with Maestro, sung with Mr. Lodico and have been introduced to “real” music by Dr. Downey.

And thanks to Mr. Lippe and our Middle School parents, we’ve had some great times at Middle School Fridays, school dances and barbeques. I also need to personally thank Mr. Dean for helping me with my baseball swing for the past three years!

I found this quote by Winston Churchill that I really liked and wanted to share: “Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”

Thankfully, tonight is not a night of goodbyes. It’s a night where we all just say thanks and look ahead. Have a great summer, and we’ll all be back together again in a few months to start the next chapter in our St. Anselm’s story. Thank you, and good night.

So, thank you to all of our teachers and faculty for making the school day feel just a little bit shorter.

Chairman’s Report Dear Constituents of St. Anselm’s Abbey School: This past school year was one of special significance in the history of St. Anselm’s Abbey School. We successfully completed our first year with a lay Headmaster, Louis Silvano. This accomplishes the goal of transitioning to lay leadership that began two years ago with the incorporation of the School and the creation of a Board of Trustees to manage and administer the School.

The Board of Trustees recognizes the outstanding service on behalf of the School of the outgoing Trustees whose three-year terms expired this June: Dr. Caryl Ersenkal; Mrs. Olive Lewis; and Dr. Daniel McMahon.

As Principal of DeMatha Catholic High School, Dr. McMahon was able to give us his perspective on the various challenges facing local private schools and also chaired the Search Committee that selected Louis Silvano as our Headmaster.

The Board of Trustees, our President, Fr. Peter Weigand and Mr. Silvano combined their efforts to diligently protect and preserve the financial viability of the School in the difficult economic environment of the past twelve months. The School concluded the year with a modest positive cash flow, which is attributable to attention to controlling costs and adhering to the approved budget.

Special appreciation goes to Trustee Richard Willett, who chairs our Budget and Finance Committee, and to the school’s Business Office staff, who formulated a realistic financial plan for the coming year that achieves our goal of providing the most cost-effective academic high-achievement program of any private school in the metropolitan area.

The Board of Trustees also welcomes three new Trustees: Mr. Stephen Kinnaird, ’80, a partner at Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker; Mr. Christopher Davitt, President of Ruppert Nurseries, Inc.; and Mr. Marco Clark, Principal of Bishop McNamara High School.

These gentlemen are significant additions to our Board.

Finally, I want to express my appreciation to all the Board Members, the Benedictine community, especially Fr. Peter and Prior Simon, the School staff, and the parents and alumni who made the past two years such a memorable experience for me. I thank you for your candor, your patience and your support as together we continue to move St. Anselm’s Abbey School into the future.

Since my term expired on July 1, the Board of Trustees for the upcoming school year will have a new Chair, Mr. William Fennell, ’66. We are very fortunate that Bill has agreed to serve in this capacity, and we look forward to the Board’s 2009–2010 goals of the completion of a Strategic Plan and improvements to the School’s development infrastructure with the longterm goal of significantly increasing the endowment and scholarship funding.
