Saint Bernard School has held a place of distinction in eastern Connecticut since its inception in 1956. As we enter our 62nd year, the support of our Bishop, the alumni, and our Saint Bernard community has never been stronger. The renovated facility offers our students a modern, safe, and exciting environment which is conducive to academic, social and spiritual development. At Saint Bernard School our faculty takes great pride in knowing each student well. To know a student’s interests, strengths, weaknesses and learning style is so critical to the student’s academic success. It is the formation of the individual’s character and intellect that is central to our mission. As a Catholic school, we continue to uphold the teachings of Jesus Christ as fundamental to all we do. While many of our students are neither Catholic nor Christian, the lessons from Jesus Christ’s teachings are universal in their message of altruism, kindness, and peace. In the generous spirit of Pope Francis, we invite all families who desire a Catholic school education for their sons and daughters to consider Saint Bernard School.

Saint Bernard School celebrated the graduation of 59 students on Friday, May 25, at the Cathedral of St. Patrick in Norwich. The ceremony included a lively speech from senior Henry Cox, of Pawcatuck, who was chosen by a faculty panel to give the Orator’s Address. “I speak for most everyone’s experience as a student here when I say that Saint Bernard is home. This is that one-of-a-kind special place that will make you feel welcome … and proud to be yourself,” he said. The Most Rev. Michael R. 2018 SAINTS GALA The Clairvaux Medal was presented to alumni Fred Smith ’64 and Sean Kaylor ’86, and the Ray H. and Pauline Sullivan Foundation, which has been a prominent financial supporter of Saint Bernard School.

• Fred Smith, who lives in New London, celebrated 50 years of teaching English at Saint Bernard last school year. He is also

a 1964 St. Bernard High School graduate. Over the years, he has served on many committees including chair of the English Department and president of the Saint Bernard Education Association. Smith was inducted into the St. Bernard High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010 for his former work as a girls’ basketball and softball coach at the school. He was recognized as The Day’s Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year in 1983 and The Bulletin’s Softball Coach of the Year in 2001.

• Sean Kaylor, a 1986 SBHS graduate, resides in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and is currently the Vice President for Enrollment, Marketing

and Communication at Marist College in Poughkeepsie. He has served on the SBS Board of Directors since 2015 and initiated the partnership between SBS and Marist College. Because of his leadership, SBS has received countless hours of technical support from Marist, a new school website managed by college personnel, donated computers, and the ability to create online Marist courses in which SBS high school students can enroll. Additionally, Kaylor initiated the Saint Bernard Golf Outing which has raised over $20,000 to date for Saints Athletics and Tuition Assistance. He regularly communicates professional development opportunities to SBS staff and works closely with the School Counseling Office to create a pathway for students who wish to attend Marist.

• The Ray H. and Pauline Sullivan Foundation has continued to be a major financial donor to Saint Bernard School. The

relationship began in March 1965, when Mr. Sullivan contributed $100,000 to the St. Bernard Boys’ High School to construct the chapel in memory of his late wife, Pauline. In 1972, the Ray H. and Pauline Sullivan Foundation was established by Mr. Sullivan who set up a $3 million trust for the Norwich Diocese for educational, religious and charitable work. Today, the trust holds close to $16 million. To date, the foundation has distributed over $3 million to Saint Bernard School for scholarships and operational expenses. They have also provided an additional $250,000 in college scholarships to Saint Bernard School students.

Theodore James Ryken Award The 2017 Ryken Award was presented to Saint Bernard School Headmaster Don Macrino following a prayer service on Dec. 1. Br. Lawrence Harvey CFX, chairman of the SBS Board of Directors, presented the award to Mr. Macrino. “As an educator for over 40 years, this person has shown that same level of dedication to education and to forming young people as he has shown to his own family and parish life,” Br. Harvey said. The award is given annually to an adult member of the school community on the feast of St. Francis Xavier at each of the 13 Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools. The honor is named for Theodore James Ryken, founder of the Xaverian Brothers, and is presented to someone who lives their life according to the values of the Xaverian Brothers. Mr. Macrino has maintained a lifelong commitment to the Catholic faith, and was honored by Bishop Cote in 2013 for his service to the Catholic Church and the Diocese of Norwich. He received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, Papal honor of the Venerable Cross - the highest honor the Catholic Church can bestow upon a member of the laity. In 1973, he began his career as an English teacher at New London High School. Since that time, he has served as dean of students at New London High School, principal of Clark Lane Middle School, and principal of Waterford High School.
