Headmaster’s Corner Saint Bernard School opened to its 61st school year in August. It holds a firm place in the educational community of eastern Connecticut and continues as one of thirteen distinguished Xavarian Brothers sponsored schools in the United States. In this time of significant school choice, Saint Bernard School maintains a six decade commitment to academic excellence, positive spiritual development, and a wholesome environment in which adolescents find a positive path to adulthood. Given the dedication of our alumni and their generous support, the school has undergone significant physical improvements. Interior renovations, wireless technology, a theater quality auditorium sound system and an integrated school security system are among the projects completed to date, with more to come. As a Catholic School we continue to uphold the teachings of Jesus Christ as fundamental to all we do. While many of our students are neither Catholic nor Christian, the lessons from Christ’s teachings are universal in their message of altruism, kindness and peace. In the generous spirit of Pope Francis we are reaching out to all families who desire a Catholic school education and are doing all we can to make that possible.

Ceremony

Saint Bernard School welcomed its newest alumni - the Class of 2017 – during the school’s 59th Commencement on May 26. Sixty-one seniors received their diplomas from The Most Rev. Michael R. Cote, Bishop of Norwich, at the Cathedral of St. Patrick in Norwich. Senior Julia Plunkett, chosen by a faculty panel, gave the Orator’s Address. She said to her classmates, Saint Bernard School stands for support, family, diversity and humility. She thanked her peers and faculty for shaping her into a better student and person. “We may be different, but we care about each other. We are like family because we are all Saints,” she said. “Becoming a Saint was one of the best decisions I’ve made, and I am glad I did it.”

We ended the third year of The Hendricks Challenge on June 30, exceeding our goal by raising $200,133. When combined with the match from the Diocese of Norwich and the Hendricks Charitable Foundation, our total raised for renovations during the 2016-17 fiscal year is $600,133. Thank you to all the alumni, parents, grandparents, family and friends for their generosity and support! And a special thanks to the Diocese and the Hendricks Charitable Foundation for their matching gifts! Our chemistry lab was completely renovated with new work stations, storage, student desks, an exhaust hood, safety equipment, new ventilation, and ceiling and floor tiles. Senior lockers have been replaced. All first-floor hallways have been updated with carpet tiles, new ceiling and lighting. The main lobby was spruced up with a fresh coat of paint, new ceiling, and lighting. A security vestibule has been installed and all the doors and glass have been replaced. A stone flooring treatment has been done and seating areas will be added for the enjoyment of students and guests. Our auditorium has also received some upgrades: New carpet was donated by Mohegan Sun and installed by Roy Archambault of Route 85 Flooring; Stations of the Cross were donated by the Chapel at Mt. St. John School and have been procured by Bishop Cote and the sound system and lighting in the auditorium have been upgraded. Additionally, all student restrooms have been renovated and a new electronic sign has been installed at the entrance along Route 32 so that families, visitors and passers-by can stay updated on events and student achievements at Saint Bernard School. 13

View the available games and seasons, and make purchases through Charter Oak Scanning at https://charteroakscanning.com/st-bernard-football/

Buy Saints Football Games on DVD “I purchased the films and found the quality beautifully done and the content was excellent. It was very nostalgic and humbling, as I noticed the eye in the sky does not lie! The tapes I viewed were my senior year and it was a wonderful treat to see games that haven’t been viewed for 50 years. My classmates very much appreciated the time and effort that the school and Glory Days have put into this project - it is a great idea.” – James Murphy, ‘66 32

Montego Bay

Saints on a

Mission

Jamaica

Written by Mia Londregan ‘18 On June 3, 12 members of the SBS community traveled to Montego Bay, Jamaica, for a week on a mission trip through the Mustard Seed Communities organization. They stayed on a compound that is home to over 30 residents ages 7-30, who have mental or physical disabilities ranging from blindness to Down syndrome and Cerebral palsy. Most were confined to a wheelchair, and fewer could speak. During the stay, students and chaperones worked alongside nurses, directly with the residents, helping to feed, teach, and entertain them. The missionaries also painted one of the houses and created a mural. They were able to participate in the community’s prayer services and see many aspects of how this “family” lives. The missionaries were constantly reminded that whatever they were doing for the residents they were doing to Jesus himself.

40

The trip meant having the opportunity to connect with people who I never would have connected with and creating bonds that I will never forget, Mia said. “I know that everyone who went on the trip, myself included, misses it a great deal and I think that says a lot about the time we spent there.”

Mr. James Leone, who organized the trip for Saint Bernard, said another highlight was getting to meet the Most Rev. Burchell McPherson, Bishop of the Diocese of Montego Bay, on the Feast of Pentecost at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral. In addition to Mia, eight other students went on the mission trip: Angela Abraham ‘18, Brooke Paradis ‘18, Sarah Forrester ‘18, Emily Smith ‘18, Kaens Etienne ‘18, Alicia Crespo ‘18, Robbie Justice ’19, and alumna Mia Shallcross ’16. Parents, Donna Paradis and Denice Feeley, chaperoned the trip alongside Mr. Leone. Photos submitted by Denice Feeley
