Headmaster’s Corner This will be my second year at Saint Bernard School. Upon accepting the position of Headmaster last year, I spoke of my perception from afar of this institution. I can tell you that my admiration has only grown since I have witnessed, firsthand, the community of students, families, and staff. There is no mystery to what makes a great school. Students must be challenged academically, they must feel safe, and they must know that they belong. Staff must be fully committed; they must ensure that no student falls between the cracks and that every student experiences success. It is our promise at Saint Bernard School that we will guide each student through a successful secondary school experience. We will prepare them well for the next stage of life. And we mustn’t forget that all of this occurs within a community built upon the spiritual values of humility, trust, zeal, compassion, and simplicity. This school year will begin with many improvements to the facility. The entire technology infrastructure has been redesigned and provides a state of the art platform which will give our students access to all the technology necessary to acquire 21st Century skills. Additionally, the two main lavatories adjacent to the front lobby have been completely renovated. Much of the school’s interior has been repainted. We are excited to introduce our Global Studies pilot program beginning with this year’s freshman class. As the world becomes a smaller place, it is important that our students gain a more global perspective, which will serve them well in whatever path the future holds for them. Our global program will focus on broadening our student perspective of geopolitical issues, cultural differences, economic challenges, etc. Saint Bernard School and Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York have entered into a partnership that will provide Saint Bernard School with access to countless opportunities from the realm of higher education: There will be free access to Marist’s incredible library; together we have developed and will offer on-line courses; Saint Bernard students will have direct access to the Marist Office of Admissions; and Marist has redesigned and will manage the Saint Bernard web page. This names just some of the benefits!
Robert Roach Athletic Director
In all, this promises to be a year of great growth and promise for Saint Bernard School. The blessings of the Hendricks Challenge, increased alumni involvement, Diocesan support from Bishop Michael Cote, and the unending dedication of our staff and families insure a bright future for our school.

57th Commencement Ceremony
On Friday, May 29, 2015, 73 students received their diplomas at the 57th Commencement Ceremony held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Norwich. The class orator was senior Alexandra Santiago and the keynote speaker was Dr. Brian McKeon, `84. “I knew from day one that I wanted to be a doctor. I wanted to help people,” said Dr. McKeon, who is the chief medical officer and team physician for the Boston Celtics. “You may be a late bloomer like

me, but this education you got here is amazing. This school prepared me for academic success.” During her graduation speech, Alexandra said she and her fellow members of the Class of 2015 found Saint Bernard to be a supportive and familylike environment. “By attending Saint Bernard we have become a part of a place that will accept us as family forever,” she said.
Closing the ceremony was the Most Rev. Michael R. Cote, bishop of Norwich, who urged students to draw on the religious education they received at Saint Bernard to continue growing in their faith. “I hope Saint Bernard has taught you the value of faith and I encourage you, don’t neglect your faith,” he said. “A good life is answering God’s call.”

Theodore James Ryken Award The 2014 Theodore James Ryken Award was presented to veteran teacher John Ayres on Dec. 3, 2014. Mr. Ayres, who teaches French and AP European history, has taught at Saint Bernard School for 33 years. Headmaster Don Macrino, who presented Mr. Ayres with the award, called him “a man who tries to follow God’s will in the common, ordinary, unspectacular flow of everyday life and by doing so has had a profound impact upon the lives or his students and colleagues.” The Ryken Award, named for the founder of the Xaverian Brothers, is given annually on the feast of St. Francis Xavier at each of the 13 Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools. The recipient is chosen by a committee made up of the administration and past Ryken Award winners. Mr. Ayres has received numerous acknowledgements at Saint Bernard over the years. He has served on New England Association of Schools visiting committees and was co-chair during Saint Bernard’s most recent accreditation. He is coordinator for World Language and Art on the Academic Leadership Council and has been an invaluable asset to the school’s campus ministers. Mr. Ayres has been instrumental in the success of the Saint Bernard Drama Program, serving as its director for many years. And he still provides almost daily technical support for school assemblies, Mass, and public gatherings.
Mrs. Dillman Retires Mrs. Mary Dillman, former assistant headmaster of Saint Bernard School and former principal of the middle school, was honored by friends and colleagues on September 26, 2014, at a dinner at Modesto’s Restaurant in recognition for her years of service to the school prior to her retirement on July 1, 2014. Mrs. Dillman came to St. Bernard to begin her tenure as middle school principal in November, 2000, at the request of Dr. Howard Bennett. In that time she successfully administered the middle school as a separate institution. With Headmaster William McKenna, Mrs. Dillman guided the middle school to complete incorporation with the high school under the XBSS model. Prior to coming to Saint Bernard, Mrs. Dillman ran a highly successful Pre-K program in Mansfield, CT for over twenty years. She began teaching at St. Mary-St. Joseph School in Willimantic in 1993. Many of her former students, and their parents, from her Pre-K program followed her to her new teaching position. In 2000, Mrs. Dillman left SMSJ for Saint Bernard and was again followed to the Academy by students who remained to attend the high school. Because her presence contributed to the enrollment of those schools, she was fondly referred to as “Mastercard Gold.” Mrs. Dillman spent her last year at Saint Bernard teaching Language Arts, which she truly enjoyed. Always considering herself a facilitator, her ability to work with students, faculty, and parents will be greatly missed. She will now be putting her grace, wit, style and creative talents to work in her garden, volunteer work, and time with her grandchildren. We wish her God’s blessings on many happy years of retirement.
Montville Education Grant Saint Bernard Partners with Marist College for Technology Upgrades The 2015-2016 school year will be filled with incredible advances for Saint Bernard School. We’ve partnered with Marist College, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in a collaborative effort to upgrade the entire technology infrastructure. The relationship between Saint Bernard and Marist was formed thanks to alumnus and Board of Trustees member Sean Kaylor, ‘86, Vice President for Enrollment Management at Marist. He and Bill Thirsk, the college’s Vice President of Information Technology/CIO, have been instrumental in establishing the partnership and coordinating efforts for the upgrades. The Saint Bernard School Board of Directors unanimously voted to support this initiative. This is the first project funded by the Hendricks Challenge, a multi-year, $3 million advancement plan earmarked for building improvements that began in June 2014.

Saint Bernard School was awarded a $5,000 grant for computer science integration from the Montville Education Foundation Inc. A ceremonial check was presented on Dec. 10, 2014 to Headmaster Don Macrino, Dana Williams, Saint Bernard’s Director of Advancement, and Ann Marie Jakubielski, Technology Coordinator, by Donald Dykes (chairman of MEF’s Grant Committee), along with other representatives from the MEF Board of Directors. The funds will be used to bring a Lego Mindstorm Robots program to SB students, along with other upgrades to the school’s computer science curriculum. Saint Bernard plans to launch a computer science program in January, beginning with an afterschool club which will focus on a variety of computer science aspects, including hardware and software, coding and robotics. 11
The Hendricks Challenge exceeds goal!
Alumna Maureen Donohue Hendricks ‘72 has challenged alumni, parents and friends to raise $1 million - $200,000 per year in each of the next five years – for the improvements. In turn, The John and Maureen Hendricks Charitable Foundation will match all donations up to that amount, and the Diocese of Norwich will also match all donations up to $200,000 per year. At the kick-off event, the Most Rev. Michael R. Cote, bishop of Norwich, presented school officials with a check for the first Diocesan installment of $200,000. “I am offering this challenge gift because I believe in Saint Bernard. It gave me a great academic start in life and I would like future generations to reap the same benefits that I did, going forward,” Mrs. Hendricks says. “I hope that others will feel as strongly as I do about this school and will give as much as they can to keep this great school going.” The first year of The Hendricks Challenge was a huge success! Saint Bernard School exceeded the fundraising goal of $200,000. Along with matching donations from the diocese and The Hendricks Charitable Foundation, we now have $600,000 to start phase one of building upgrades and renovations.

Youth March for Life Saint Bernard students participated in the Youth Rally and Mass for Life in Washington, D.C. on January 22, 2015. The trip was sponsored by the Diocese of Norwich. The Youth Rally and Mass for Life occurs in conjunction with the annual National March for Life held on (or near) the anniversary of the 1973 Roe v. Wade court decision making abortion legal in the United States. This year observes the 42nd anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision. The Rally strives to encourage youth participating in the national March for Life in their witness as disciples of Christ and promoters of the Gospel of Life.
Grandparent’s Mass and Luncheon Saint Bernard School celebrated grandparents on April 9, 2015, with a Grandparents Mass and Luncheon, which was attended by about 200 people. The event, which has grown from a small dessert reception into a major event, is an annual tradition currently in its seventh year at Saint Bernard. The occasion aims to connect the generations and celebrate grandparents and the special meaning they hold in our lives.
Student accounts of the trip The March for Life is an annual stand against the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize abortion as a result of the Roe v Wade case. Each year, the trip is offered through the Norwich Diocese and always attracts many students from Saint Bernard School. I am proud of this; it is fantastic to see how we unite as a community to stand together among some 150,000 others in protest. I believe the trip is so popular because it allows us to see that we are not alone in taking a stand and that our generation does have a voice that is being heard.
During his homily, the Most Rev. Michael R. Cote, bishop of Norwich, called grandparents “great people of faith.” “They’ve lived it through their lives, through their marriages, through their fidelity, through their sacrifices,” he said. “They have taught us a great lesson.”
Before heading to the capitol for the March, we attended a Mass held at the D.C Armory. The Mass is amazing in both number and participation. There were thousands of teens together praying for the safety and success of the March. A large portion of the Mass was sung and it was a lot of fun to sing along with everyone. I have attended the March for Life trip all four of my high school years and I enjoyed it each time. I hope the trip continues to grow in popularity as well as the March itself. – Shannon Foley, Class of 2015
I was extremely excited to travel to Washington D.C. for the annual March for Life trip. Being that it was my first time attending, I honestly had no idea what to expect. When we arrived at the Youth Rally and Mass, I was awed to see the masses of people that had traveled from many other states. The music, the readings, and the speakers made the overall experience of the Mass and Rally a great one. When we arrived at the actual march, I expected to see around the same number of people that had attended the Mass participating in the march as well. Instead, I saw a never ending sea of people, thousands and thousands of people. The amount of people who had attended the march was significantly greater than the number of people that also attended the Mass and Rally, which was great on its own. It was amazing to be able to participate with so many people for a great cause. Overall, I had a wonderful experience on this trip and I cannot wait to attend again next year! – Mia Shallcross, Class of 2016

Frankie Valli Drummer visit
Piano studio with other alum
Students in concert band learned what it takes to succeed in the music business during a Nov. 3, 2014 visit from alumnus Craig Pilo ‘90, a professional drummer who has toured the world with numerous artists, including Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.
Saint Bernard alumnus and professional pianist, John Carta ‘06, led a piano masterclass for SB music students on Oct. 29, 2014.
The American rock and pop band performed at Mohegan Sun Arena Sunday night, and Mr. Pilo extended his local stay to visit his family in Mystic and speak to the students here at his alma mater today. Following his discussion with the concert band, Mr. Pilo also led a master class with the band’s percussion section, and showed them advanced drumming techniques.
He spoke to the group about his career as a musician, performed, and listened to several students perform pieces they have been working on.
Mr. Pilo spoke to students about the importance of attending college, staying away from drugs and alcohol, and seizing the opportunities available to them at Saint Bernard. To the handful of students who showed interest in pursuing music careers, Mr. Pilo said the music business is a difficult place, but the goal is attainable. “If you practice and you work hard, you can do this,” he said. “The time to get serious about things is now.”
Saints Musicians Perform at Disney World Saints Perform at National Choir Festival
Saints musicians from Concert Band and Concert Choir participated in the Disney Performing Arts Program in Orlando, Fla., over Winter Break during the week of Feb. 16, 2015. The students spent one day working with specialized Disney musicians on what goes into making the music for a Disney film, and even recorded in studio along to selected classic Disney films. The groups also performed a concert on the Waterside Stage in Downtown Disney for a large crowd. The concert was simultaneously live-streamed on the internet.
On April 25, 2015, the Saints Choir performed at the Church of St. Malachy’s during the New York Regional National Catholic High School Choral Festival. The festival was sponsored by the American Federation Pueir Cantores, which is the national student choral organization of the Catholic Church.

Wreaths Across America is an organization whose mission- Remember, Honor, Teach- is carried out in part by coordinating wreath laying ceremonies on a specified Saturday in December at Arlington, as well as veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond. Their week-long “Veterans Parade” between Maine and Virginia spreads their message about the importance of remembering fallen heroes, honoring those who serve and teaching our children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms.

Rachel received four awards for her drawing and illustrations: a Gold Key award for her work titled “Tupelo Trees” and three honorable mentions for “Boxes,” “Looking Up,” and “Face of Orange.” An awards ceremony was held Jan. 25 at the Lincoln Theater at the University of Hartford.
The convoy consists of 150,000 wreaths which make approximately 12 visits to schools, veterans’ homes, monuments and communities along the east coast on their way to Arlington. The wreaths’ journey has become a tradition in itself, allowing locals along the route to share in the emotional and educational experience as the convoy passes through their hometown.
